When I reached out she asked me what I wanted to do and was able to give me pricing and a breakdown of everything from the beginning. While small, this still left a great impression Stylist Lulu was absolutely amazing and wonderful. I had ALOT of trauma with my hair. I expressed this to Lulu during my booking and she was extremely kind--especially with my almost cold feet. As she worked on my hair she walked me through each and every step. When it came to cutting she let me see and feel where she'd be cutting and didn't deviate from the plan. When the coloring began she patiently explained what she was doing, and checked in on how far up the color would go, etc. She was professional and experienced and had great command of her trade. With a serious case of "quarantine" hair, I was looking for a new stylist, closer to home. I had been going to salons in Napa and Berkeley up to this point. I began my search on Yelp and found Lacquer. Lulu had so many positive reviews I decided to reach out. We exchanged messages. I sent pics of me from when I liked my hair and moved forward with an appointment about a week down the road. I met her and immediately liked her. I was sure I wanted to go back to bangs but she could sense I wasn't as ready as my bravado suggested so she talked me into something a little different and I am so glad she did. I was trying to find a place with high ratings and good reviews since I hadn't had my haircut since a couple weeks before the first stay-in-place order. My then A-line cut had grown all the way out and I didn't touch it or change it since I had all new growth. I could have settled for a couple salons in Walnut Creek or Pleasanton, but luckily, I found this gem of a salon!! I had driven by this place for years not knowing it was a hair studio and thinking it was a beauty supply or cosmetology school lol Basically, I'm so glad I found this place on Yelp! It's less than 10min away from my house and it's super clean and absolutely COVID ready. They make you wash your hands as soon as you come in before doing anything. Yes, LOVE THIS PLACE; full stop. Lulu is the real deal. Not only she is amazing colorist, but she will impress you with her attention to fine details and make you feel at home. Spending three hours with her on a 3 hour intense color projects goes by so fast. My hair is curly and I have been told plenty of times what I can and can not do, but Lubna really makes the magic happen. She gave me a great cut and color and left me with the right products and tips to maintain my look. Not only do I love how it looks, I love how it makes me feel. She told me also does make-up, so I hired her for my photo shoot/ film recording and her makeup skills are on point! She can do everyting from the "natural" look to the glammed up crowd stunner look. Long overdue review! CONTEXT Almost three(3) years ago, I moved to San Leandro, knowing no one near the area, I had to find new spots to eat, watch movies, hiking spots and hairstylist! It took me about 6 months until I had decided to give San Leandro a chance. I started to browse and research for a hair salon that (1) reasonable price, (2) alluring portfolio and (3) most importantly personable. After reading a few reviews, I decided to reach out via Yelp. SERVICE Shortly after my DM via Yelp, I received a response and scheduled an appointment with Rosa. I told her what I wanted and on the day of my appointment, I showed her a few photos of what I wanted my cut to be. Her enthusiasm was great and she was very easy to talk to. My conversation with her (and continue til this day) felt very organic. I never felt like I was forced into a conversation or that she felt bored (if she was faking it - she's really good at it #justsaying). Sometimes my appointment would be aligned with one of Kim's appointments and I would hear and watch her interact with her's. Then Rosa would join in and ask questions on whatever the topic of discussion would be. The reason why I'm pointing this out is that I want to point out the dynamic of their professional relationship - it is super sisterly (if that is even a word). I have been at salons where you can sense there are female competitions amongst each other and here you do not feel that at all. Both stylists is wonderful people and you can easily feel you're at home when you're there - even with their clients. FINISHED PRODUCT My hair was long and I had decided to go asymmetrical cut short bob (not the first time). She did an excellent job and did it seamlessly. VERDICT I have recently moved back to the Peninsula and have continued to drive over the bridge to the East Bay (once a month) to get a trim/full cut and it is worth the drive. read more

I had an appointment with Lulu on March 17th. I went in with virgin hair and asked for a Balayage. I provided her a pic prior to my visit which I have attached. It had warm browns, caramel and blonde as you can see. I was told by her, that she loved it and that it could absolutely be done. The first thing I told LuLu was that I did not want a haircut. After being told to sit in the seat, she ran her fingers through my hair and said that she had to cut my hair because it was uneven. I told her I was ok with it being uneven because I liked it and I was letting my hair grow out. She said in order for her to dye and style my hair so that I can see the colors, she would have to trim the ends. She reassured me not to worry, that she was not going to take away from my length but just even the tips out. We proceeded because I wanted my hair colored. Moving forward... she ended up cutting my hair into a short bob that showed my entire neck! She said I had a beautiful neck and that I should show it. WTF... if I wanted to show my dam neck I would have told her to cut it short. First of all, I HATE bobs. But of coarse, she wouldn't have known that because a bob was never asked for period! At that point my hair was too short to be fix. My hair color was COMPLETELY different than the colors asked for. Lulu charged me $445.00 for an unexecuted hair color, a balayage that looked like a head full of highlights and a unwanted bob. I also attached pics of her final results. I told her I was unhappy, it was not what I wanted and if she could fix my hair before I left? She said her next available appt was on March 31st. She also said that she disagreed with me and that she saw all the colors I wanted and that it was a balayage, but that I can come back on the 31st and she could add a few low lights. She also told me that after I come back we could no longer have a client relationship and that she would give me a few referrals to other hair stylists. Really? After hearing that do you think Im going to feel comfortable going back to get my hair fixed? I asked for a refund and she said, as a small business, she does not do refunds but did refund me the $85 haircut which goes against her policy. Mind you I had to wait 7 days for my refund. What I should have done is not paid until I got what I wanted. Thats the lesson learned for me! I do not recommend Lulu at all for any of your hair services. I wish I would have read the reviews prior to setting up my appt with Lulu because she did the same to another client. I forgot to mention that I had to go do additional work to my hair just to make myself feel better after sitting with it for a week. read more

So many beautiful pictures and good reviews of Lacquer Studios, my heart was racing. I thought to myself, at last a hair salon for me to go to. With Covid and moving, I haven't had one in a very long time and I have begun to wear hats and ponytails in the effort to not deal with the effects of this. As you can probably tell by what I am saying, I was anxious to get a move on with getting a hold of them and hopefully booking an appointment. First however, I needed to find out the rates to do this. I contacted them via FB messenger (not sure if through Yelp or not). ....First contact was on October 17, 2021. Two days later they write me and ask what I am looking to get done at 10pm at night . A bit late but hey they were most likely busy so I will be understanding.. I write back an hour later letting them know that I need a haircut and a blow dry. Tick Tok, Tick Tok....no not that Tik ToK, the Tick Tock of a clock going round and round and time going by, over and over. Tick Tock....my clock stopped because they never got back to me. Not sure why that is? I am doing my best not to go into assumption mode, as it leads to now where good. It would have been nice to find out what they charge, and if they were good. I live just south of San Francisco and I make the trek all the way to San Leandro just to come to this salon. I don't trust anyone with my hair because I've had so many bad experiences with stylists who don't know how to handle curly hair. Thankfully I came across Lubna's Instagram page and decided to book an appointment with her at her salon. Lacquer Studios is a bit inconspicuous on the outside but inside it is a well decorated and clean salon. They even have a ring light in case you want to take selfie's of your new look. My hair is naturally dark brown and I wanted to add some color to brighten it up for my wedding. I was worried highlights would look stringy or bad on my hair. Lubna works with all hair types but specializes in curly hair (also helps that she has a beautiful head of curly hair herself). She used a technique that highlighted my natural curls and looks good even while it is growing out. I have been working with her for almost a year now and I am always pleased with her work. Im asian and had a very long hair and I wanted to try something very fun so i wanted a bowl cut dyed with a pastel pink color. And girllll I got EXACTLY what I wanted! Kim also helped a lot through the process, I could see the great teamwork, she checks in with us every now and then. Honestly, I would not achieve so much satisfaction without these two. I also appreciated so much about the fact that Lulu stayed and finished the whole process in one appointment. It took like at least six hours but I swear it was all worth it especially how screwed my hair was when I came in. 5 stars for Lulu. 4 stars for salon. I've seen Lulu twice for root touch-up and once for a cut. She is excellent at her craft and also honest, funny, and professional. She's willing to work with you with what you bring, in my case, massive amounts of hair, a mom schedule and needs, and an interest in trying something different (but not there yet). She has a loyal customer base and she adds to the camaraderie that is tangible in the salon culture. I'm deducting a star from a perfect review because the washing stations are terrible. The two times I've been there I've gotten my face soaked (which is not fun when it's water with dye). I've been to maybe 50 different salons in my life, in 7 countries, and that has never happened. They implied it was user error (aka I wasn't sitting correctly) but the truth is that it's just not a good chair for clients; maybe it's a good chair for stylists, and I get that this is important. read more

I was referred to Laquer Studios by a friend and was fortunate to get an appointment with Lulu. I have fine, overprocessed hair that I've been growing out, but Lulu was very knowledgeable about how to work with my hair type. She was very communicative and listened to my concerns and ideas before beginning the cut. She checked in with me along the way to get input on my desired length and shape of the cut. I really appreciated this as a first time client! Lulu was able to get rid of the overprocessed ends of my hair and gave me a cut that is flattering and makes my hair look and feel a million times better. Rosa or Bunny was OK for a simple mono color dye and bang trim. Good with bangs. My extensions fell out when I washed my hair which she said was "normal" it's not. Also blamed on my shampoo but I use Kevin Murphy so uh no it was not the shampoo. Also, my extension tabs were so obvious in the back and she didn't warn me (it was my first time having them) so I walked around like a fool with my hair parted in the back with tabs showing on a very important trip overseas. Not a good look. My keratin treatment turned my hair orange which she also didn't fix even though she was in direct light and could see the top of my head. She didn't do a strand test or anything to make sure that the hair dye wouldn't have a reaction and didn't offer to color correct. Oh, and she cut about 6 to 8 inches hastily off my hair before putting the extensions in so when I took them out...my beautiful hair was gone. Hair at the end is not healthy but when you have crazy long hair, dead hair is not going to be healthy at the ends. Period the end. Cutting off half a foot was rude and excessive and violating. I didn't feel like myself for months after- she robbed me from feeling comfortable in my own skin. I'm now, a year later, just starting to feel/look like myself again. Also, I know how much extensions retail for wholesale and her markup on them is highway robbery for some dinky salon in San Leandro. She was a mess and did a messy job. She may have been on pain meds? I know she's a drinker. I just don't think she put her A-game into my hair. It's taken me a year to leave this review but I've wanted to do it for a long time. I don't think it's good karma to leave bad reviews which is why I mostly use Yelp for good and positive feedback but I think it's bad karma to not care about your clients in a genuine way and not put your heart into what you're doing as your vocation. read more

IF YOU HAVE CURLY HAIR DO NOT GO HERE!!!! I repeat IF YOU HAVE CURLY HAIR DO NOT GO HERE!!!!! After seeing all the good reviews and pictures on the website I thought this would be a good place to get my hair cut - WRONG! I urge everyone to remember pictures posted are always the best work they've done - not the consistent work. I saw LULU and she chopped my hair off and tried to deny it as if I don't know the consistency and condition nor the length of my hair. After seeing the reveal I told her outright that she cut a lot of my hair off, I didn't like it and it looked choppy (I can see every layer she cut and none of them were blended). I tried to give her the benefit of the doubt by giving it some time for me to get use to but when my uncle said I looked like a fuzzy ball of cotton and my grandmother said that who ever did my hair really did me a disservice I knew it wasn't just me. My bestfriend said I looked like ice cube with the jerry curl, and my coworker said I reminded her of the head coach from sunset park. Not only did this impact my confidence but it also impacted my work. With my profession my hair must be up and out of my face (which I told her during the appointment and her response was "oh you can't wear it half up and half down" - which means she knew she cut too much) and also saying at the end of the appointment "your hair grows super fast anyways so it won't be a problem" (it took me 5 years to grow my hair, and I'm not a chia bet you can't just water my head and expect it to grow overnight). After restyling and trying to figure out how to not look like a child or a curly wig from the Halloween store I thought it'd be best to let her know and see what could be done other than cutting my hair shorter. I sent an email and her reply was that my hair hadn't been cut in years (which my last hair cut was in November of 2020), it was uneven (my hair was cut in long layers in April 2021 for my birthday) and that she didn't cut that much off (she cut off 12 inches from the longest layer and the shortest layer is about 16inches from starting length), and the specific cut creates volume (which I have finer hair so I can achieve volume easily and I don't see why so much needed to be cut in order to get some volume either) and if I wanted her to blend the layers so they weren't as harsh I would need to come in with my hair straightened prior so she can even the cut (which as a curly expert doing a curly cut I would assume she would know how to achieve this without the hair being straightened or if she needed the hair to be straight to achieve the best cut she would've asked me to do that before the first cut so this wouldn't be a problem now). Ok! Let's get to it! First off let me say Lubna (Lulu) is one of the sweetest people I have ever met. It all started out when I began following her on IG a few years back. Her clients would walk in with one look and leave with another whole different look. And I loved it! I struggled for the longest time to find a salon who had a private area as I wear a hijab. I've gone through several stylists but none could do it. But lo and behold came Lulu.... I scheduled my appointment right away! During my first visit it because known that our families knew each other and we both attended the same preschool together we haven't seen each other since we were little kids!!!!! What an awesome feeling. We clicked right away. So when I showed up for my second appointment we had so much to talk about. So once I arrived I was asked to wear my mask and wash my hands before being seated in a salon chair. And guess what!?! We had the entire salon all to ourselves. Every hijabi's dream! She first started off with the haircut in which she did it in the front half of the salon. And it was a beautiful cut that will make it easier to manage especially with thick hair. The color I wanted to achieve was nearly impossible as I have years of boxed dye in my hair. But Lulu had so much patience and took her time to try to get it as close as possible. It took over an hour of her coming and going with the bleach to achieve getting all the boxed dye out of my hair. I barely felt the time pass as we talked and talked and talked. She put in the toners and Oh My God! I fell in love with the color. It wasn't the color I expected but Lulu figured it out. It just goes to show how amazing she is. In the end she dried and styled it to perfection. I fell in love with her work. I already scheduled my next appointment in 8 weeks. I swear she is worth every penny! I needed someone to to interpret my "I want to stay a redhead, but, you know, 'more' red head. Not brighter. Richer. No blue undertones, but no orange either" gibberish. I met Lulu for consultation, We discussed ideas using pictures as a reference point. The day of the cut she was great at applying my feedback. I was apprehensive to cut my hair shorter, she noticed that i was not certain. Hence, she did not cut as short. She didn't use the electric shaver on my neck, yay! I found Kimberly through a friend who recommended her for an authentic 1930's finger waved styling. She did a stellar job, and the hairstyle totally made my outfit. The experience was fun too, with lots of amusing banter and two adorable dogs for comedic relief. Also, her salon is decorated in a style that really appeals to me.
