WOW! A local gem!! For some reason I've always had difficulty in achieving the look I want with sew-ins. Usually they're bulky, too tight and recently took too long. Thankfully I came across Studio 99! It is perfectly located near downtown Oakland, in a small clean salon. Went in last night after easy scheduling with the owner, Melissa, via IG. Melissa is very knowledgeable and talented at what she does. My hair is now almost a week out and has been relatively painless (fresh braids hurt no matter what) and the style looks great! I especially love how she set the "leave out" do I can style my hair differently. To top it off my real hair was trimmed and braided with support to take the pressure off my natural hair. A gem! I HAD MY HAIR N FOR ABOUT 4 HOURS AND HAD TO TAKE IT OUT!!!! 2 OF THOSE HOURS I WAS DRIVING. I LET THE LADY (OWNER) KNOW RIGHT AWAY ABOUT THE ISSUE. SHE TOLD ME TO GO W A RATTAIL COME AND RRY TO LOOSE. IT. UMMM HOW. I TRIED AND STILL NOTHING. I SHOWED HER PICTURES IF HOW MY SKIN WAS PULLING AND TURNING WHITE AND YOU CAN C THE FOLLICLES BEING PULLED. HAD TO TAKE IT OUT RIGHT AWAY. Sucks, because i gave her 250 and hair was over 400 . So I'm was out of 700 plus with gas, parking ticket and service. I have 4 kids and that could have def been given to them.. i only requested 125 back. She said ok then the games started. My time is more valuable than 125 so I just blocked her eventually and told her God bless and moved on w life. Life is too short! Chop it up as a loss and a lesson! She seems to be a nice person, however nice isn't going to fix the fact that I went there and my hair was way too tight. I don't live in the area, I'm 2hrs away so I couldn't go back to have it redone. I told her right away upon getting home that my hair was way too tight and I tried to modify it and cut parts that are tight out. Still did not work. I think she started rushing towards the end as another client showed up and did not realize how tight she was doing my hair. My hair was so tight I started throwing up. I called Er and spoke to a colleague there as I'm n the med field and she told me it's imperative to take it down if I don't get relief after trying to cut a few. I called her again she and she said she will redo it if I come back. Mind you my bday was the next day and my daughter's bday was the day after so I couldn't. I gave her a great tip bc she took me last min and seemed genuine at first so I was like u know what I'll just get half of what I paid back. She said to call her on face time to show her I took it down and so I did just as she asked. She didn't answer. I then texted her and she said oh I left my phone at shop. So I told her now bc I was using someone else's phone I no longer have access to ft but I can send pictures. I could have even showed her a picture of me and wrote a date on it. She didn't want that. I showed her a picture the night I took it down of my hair and the frontal completely lifted out. So fast forward she tells me no she's not going to do it and she needs a ft mind u I had already tried calling her at the exact time she told me to. I told her it's cool I'm not guna go back and fourth with you God bless and I left it alone. I do not need to lie about taking my hair down!!! It kind of had a wiggish look but I was happy that she was accommodating and agreed to do it. Now I 100% regret it. I got a parking ticket as she talked and showed me pictures the full first 1 and some mins before actually even doing my hair. So overall I wouldn't return. The service was ok but overall it's a No for me. Business is business and that's OK. Hope everything works out w how she handles hers! OVERALL THE ISSUE WAS MY HAIR WAS WAYYYY TO TIGHT. Update-this woman literally just stopped showing up for our appointments, at first she would be late. And I mean really late, hours. We once had an appointment, I drove there walked in the door and she was doing someone else's hair and told me sorry I can't do your hair today can you come next week? Then she simply made an appointment, I showed up and she never did. I left messages, the shop was locked up and I have never heard from her since. She's not cheap and she does great hair but she doesn't show up, and she completely disrespects her clients time and prior obligations then charges you like she is on time and professional. Also that place is filthy, the bathroom is not a place I would send my worst enemy and if I'm going to spend my money the least you can do is call and cancel or discount the price due to being 2+ hours late and telling me go home after I'm already there. I rarely give reviews on Yelp, this might be only my 3 rd one in all the years I've been a yelper But I had to let everyone know just how awesome my experience was with Melissa 1st off, I called on I think late Thursday afternoon asking for an appointment for a full weave. Being that close to the weekend, I wasn't expecting to be accommodated the same week, but she fit me in on that Saturday( yesterday). During the phone conversation, she was so pleasant and personable, I felt like I was talking to an old friend! When I arrived, she was ready for me, started on time, flawlessly slayed my weave ( which was hella flat, no lumps, bumps, or hella tight braids) cut and styled exactly as I'd asked for and the price was right! I've been going to Studio 99 for over a year now, so this review is much overdue but what can I say... I want this gem all to myself!! I found this salon through Yelp after some less than great experiences looking for stylists in San Francisco. I visited Melissa, who hooked me up with my first weave in 7+ years. I bought super high quality hair from her and she did a bangin sew-in that lasted me for 4 months. I saw her for another sew-in weave when I peeped Sharae working some magic on a crochet weave. I had never seen crochet before so I investigated... Y'all... Sharae stole me away and I've been getting braided by the crochet queen ever since! I've had multiple looks (different curl patterns, colors, Senegalese twists) and I LOVE the versatility of the style. I exercise a lot so it's also great to be able to do a full wash down to the scalp when I want. My hair grows fast, so I see Sharae about once every 6-8 weeks. I get so many compliments that I should really just start carrying around her business card! As a stylist, Sharae is very quick to respond to text, on time for appointments, and committed to customer satisfaction. Her work is of the highest quality, and her prices are fair. As a person, she's super nice, funny and a pleasure to be around. My appointments usually run around 3 hours, but the time flies in the salon-- Melissa and Sharae are so much fun. The location is very convenient to BART and plenty of parking around as well. I can't say enough great things about this salon. I called her several times during the day to let her know that I'd be in her "salon" around 5:30 pm or so. Then I realized she does not have a salon place, it is in her apartment. So I called her for one last time and still no answer. Talking about being unprofessional. I went in today to have it done. She was nothing short of sweet, caring, very knowledgeable, professional and made me feel like I'd known her for years. So I got a full sew in back in September the day before my appointment I called several times to confirm my appointment and no one answered I found another number on line for a braider in the shop and contacted her and she was RUDE and UNPROFESSIONAL finally that night Melissa called to confirm my appointment and was rude too. I really didn't want to go get my hair done there because of the way they acted but I was going out of town and it was too late to find someone else. When I arrived to the shop everything was fine good conversation and fast service. My hair was nice and that's what was important to me even though a few days my edges lumped up from being so tight it wasn't a huge deal to me. So I started calling end of this year to make an appointment for my bday mid January. No answer no call back for days finally she answered after about 7days...during this time Melissa is posting ads and pictures on Craigslist and Instagram so I couldn't figure out why she not returning calls. Anyway when she finally answered she told me to call her back in 15 minutes so I did... guess what NO ANSWER I called back several times and she did not answer. Finally after a few hours she texted me about an appointment the following day which is not what I requested. I think she needs to learn to conduct business better she brags about her posting ads but is not returning calls which defeats the purpose. I cannot believe I never finished my review! Where do I start? I originally found Melissa on craigslist after months of searchig, never finding anyone with what I considered to be reputable work in my area. Initially Melissa was a bit hard to get a hold of but after going to her I realized it was because this girl puts in work! She managed to fit me in a couple of days after talking to her and I'm so happy I did. Melissa is extremely personable and makes sure you're comfortable while you wait for your turn. If I was just rating the location and Personalities of the ladies, then it would be 5 stars no doubt! However I am basing this on my braids which were done by Char. They were too long, too tight (especially around my edges), she braided with the smallest sections ( which was why they were so damn heavy.....BECAUSE THERE WERE SO MANY DAMN BRAIDS IN MY HEAD!!!). When I tried to go to sleep that night it was a nightmare! No position was right, every which way I layed, it hurt and I felt a pulling. Long story short, I ended up taking the braids down, 12 days later. So I basically just GAVE her $100, not to mention the $26 I wasted on the hair! UGH read more

Melissa completely played me out of my $50 silk press service that she said she can provide ...... I asked for a silk press and she did not provide that even though on the phone she agreed with no problem prior. She only flat ironed my hair and used no products and did it in SUPER LARGE CHUNKS, extremely fast and said she was "done" in like 20 minutes!!!! Didn't even wrap my hair and leave it under the dryer(silk press) ...She was in such a rush to leave, she did a horrible half job. She blatantly ignored my roots....didn't even care to get my roots. I take so much pride in my skin, she BURNT the side of my face... how can you treat a customer who is spending her valuable money with you like this ??? Let alone, a human being. I shouldn't have to go home after paying a "stylist" and go over the mistakes that you purposely chose to miss because you were in a rush to go home so bad and didn't care about me as a customer at all. I absolutely love Melissa! If you've never had your weave done by a professional, then this is the spot, and I bet you'll never go back to kitchen beauticians and cheap jobs again. I've paid all types of prices for my weaves done by friends and family members. The usual rate on the street is $75 for partial and $100 for full, so what's a couple of more dollars for a PROFESSIONAL that will do it right! Trust me, I've lost a lot of my real hair, trying to pay the cheapest price out there. Also waisted HOURS of my life because someone needs to take a smoke break, tend to their kids, or have to run to the store because they don't have all the supplies at their house. You can simply make an appointment with Melissa and be out the door quickly and fabulous! Now, I've been getting weaves for awhile as a protective style, and I've never seen as much improvement in the growth of my natural hair since I've seen Melissa. I will continue to see her for weaves until my hair reaches a desired length, and then I will come in for a press. Yes, ladies they also do natural hair, and it looks AMAZING! Just try her out, you won't be disappointed. I've never had a problem booking an appointment, but let's be courteous, call a few days to a week in advance before your desired date & time. She does get business, and calls all day long. In response to those who have complained, I make sure I contact her at appropriate times and leave a message. Melissa's style is versatile. She can tackle whatever picture or idea of a style you want. She also sells good quality hair as a packaged deal with the sew in. I've never seen that anywhere by the way, especially at her price, so you're getting a bargain. The area is easily accessible. I must add, if you're driving, bring change for the parking meters. I am new to having hair extensions since just last November, so I've only been to Stephanie a couple of times. She always makes my hair look fantastic! I have long red and blonde extensions, and she blended them together very well. I get compliments all the time, and other than people I see every day that know my hair didn't get that long overnight, everyone thinks they are real and can't even tell it's a weave! Stephanie is also a great conversationalist, so it's always a positive experience that helps the time go by quickly. I highly recommend this salon, and if you can get an appointment with Stephanie, all the better! Beware of this business owner. I hired her to create a custom wig for me. She requested a deposit which I timely sent via CashApp. After sending the deposit, Melissa kept making excuses for why the wig was not ready for me to pick up. Multiple times she stopped communicating with me for weeks at a time. After numerous texts, she would finally respond with more excuses. I requested proof that the wig had been made. She sent me a photo from a random phone number not affiliated with her or her business. As of today, I have no proof that Melissa did anyting other than scam me out of my hard-earned money. A few weeks ago, Melissa offered to ship the wig to me. As of today, I am still waiting to hear from her. I reached out to Melissa because I had worked with her in the past. She did a great job with my first weave. Unfortunately, Melissa is not the same person I trusted years ago. Buyer beware, do not deal with this business owner unless it's face to face, and even then, do not give any money upfront. I'm not even sure Melissa is still in business. She refused to confirm her business address after multiple requests. Please don't make the same mistake I did.
