Lobster rolls are one of my favorite foods, but I haven't quite found a place in the area that is as good as Lobster West's. This is an order at the counter style of restaurant and the food is then brought out to the table. We sat outside so we didn't get a look at the inside. I really appreciate the surplus of napkins and utensils at the tables, as the food can get messy! I had a "boss" lobster roll (with extra meat) with a cup of the lobster bisque. Simply delicious. Love that they don't fill the lobster meat with additional ingredients as fillers so that was nice. You weren't wasting any money paying for less lobster. Our to-go order was taken quickly out front (no entering the shop), and we received the food within 15 mins. You can sit in the patio to eat, but we decided to take our food back home. I tried the No R'easter Combo, which was a trio sample of all three rolls they offer - crab, shrimp, and lobster. All of the seafood was not only very generous but super fresh! Unsurprisingly, The cashier assured us that the seafood in flew in from the East Coast weekly. I would hardly call myself a lobster roll connoisseur, but their lobster rolls brought me right back to travelling to Boston! The buttered split-top buns are soft and pillowy, with just the right amount of toasting and a smear of mayo (not too much!). A mountain of briny lump crab meat, shrimp, or lobster perched atop the buns. So good! If I had rank them, I would say they are all closely tied, but the order would be crab, lobster, then shrimp. I really loved the shrimp, but crab and lobster were just stupid good. I also had a sip of the lobster bisque, which was too sweet for my taste. But, still pretty tasty with a handful of oyster crackers. I think also it's very fairly priced and the portion sizes made a really nice lunch. If I had ordered a single roll, I would definitely opt for the double meat option, but the single meat is pretty smaller otherwise. When you push the meat down into the bun with a fork because it comes out with it mostly stacked on top of the roll (making it challenging to eat), it helps to eat it adequately and you get the taste of the meat in each bite. I was highly disappointed with the fact this location doesn't have the fountain drinks anymore as the shirley temple was their best drink! But hey, if it didn't sell, it didn't sell, and that's business, which I can understand. Also, the sea salt chips I had were stale, but that's not really the fault of the business since it was from a third party and had a good expiration date. I love Lobster rolls, but I know that this regional delicacy is best when enjoyed in New England, so I set my expectations accordingly and never made the effort to try Lobster West. A long weekend including multiple, lengthy Zoom meetings with my colleagues in Boston, coupled with a lack of food during the stressful project created the perfect opportunity to stop in and give them a try. I ordered a Boss style lobster roll which means they are served with 50% more lobster. The cashier offered me an upgrade to two sides for an additional $3 so I selected coleslaw and potato chips. As my kids would say, that was a newb decision. The chips were little bags of packaged chips and the slaw went right in the trash when I smelled it. My expectations were correct, this lobster roll tastes nothing like the ones that I enjoyed in Boston. The meat did not have the same sweetness or texture but was still tasty. No pun intended, but to top it off it was over-seasoned with old bay sprinkles. It does not take Captain obvious to tell me that Lobster is going to be expensive, so the $30 price tag (with a tip) was no surprise. What I really want to know is what it would take to be fully satisfied and full by eating lobster rolls. Would 3 be enough? Maybe 4? I will most likely return to Lobster West, and when I do there will be no newb mistakes like ordering the sides, and I will ask them to refrain from the use of Old Bay. read more

07.16.2020 After a little shopping at the nearby surf shops we decided to grab something for lunch. So after many years we are FINALLY trying this place!!! Hubby got himself a Lobster Roll and I snuck in a bite. The bread was soft on the inside and crispy/crunchy on the outside. He appreciated the light shmear of mayo so it wasn't overwhelming the lobster flavor. He did wish there was more lobster meat in the bread because when he came down to the end of the bread (about a couple inches of bread) it was lonely without any. The crab cake was deceiving. I thought it was just an itty bitty cake the size (diameter) of the aioli container. But when I cut into it it was about an inch (or more?) thicker. The crab cake was fried but not too crispy/crunchy so that meant it was more crab than filling. I liked the mixed greens they served with it so it was almost like a small crab cake salad. I got the flight of soups -- one each of lobster bisque, crab soup and clam chowder. The lobster bisque was very flavorful and creamy. I liked it a lot! Little O said the clam chowder was good. This version is creamier than a local place in La Jolla we frequent when we're in the area. The clam chowder was very creamy and had some chunks of potatoes. A nice rich consistency with many clam pieces hiding in the thick chowder. The crab soup had some potatoes, corn and carrots with a bit of spice/zing to it. It was lighter than the bisque or the clam chowder. If you don't order online for pick up they have a table set up at the front of their entrance for ordering and payment. The cashier had a mask on and gloves. But I did have to ask the cashier if she could clean the pad after the customer before me used it. Saw this place Sunday afternoon In Encinitas and had to try the lobster roll ($14.95). If you do a check in through Yelp you get a free small soup. You can order the combo which is an additional $3 and you get two sides which is a good deal. Drinks are counted as a side so if you do the Yelp check in, the free soup is an additional side. I ordered a lobster roll with coleslaw, ice tea and free Maryland crab soup. My hubby ordered the lobster roll with beans, soda and free Clam chowder. The lobster was on a buttered roll. I think it would have taken it a notch up if the lobster was warm and not on the cold side. Still good though. Coleslaw was good. They let you have a sample in case you want to try it first. The clam chowder I felt was a little on the watery side. I usually prefer my clam chowder a little thicker in consistency, but it was flavorful. Maryland crab soup which is tomato-based with vegetable was alright. The beans were on the sweet side. The inside of the place had a little bit loud music and their AC high so we sat outside in their front patio and enjoyed the San Diego weather eating our yummy lobster rolls. read more
