Dropped in late afternoon after a Blue Bell visit and, despite being past prime hours, the team was warm and welcoming. Decent amount dining space, and a lot of country music décor on the walls. Brisket and pork steak were sold out, so we went with what was left--pork ribs and smoked turkey. The ribs had that deep, smoky bark with a bold salt-and-pepper crust, while the turkey was unexpectedly the standout: tender, juicy, and packed with flavor. Sides included silky braised cabbage (a sleeper hit) and Mexican street corn, which was decent but not a highlight. A solid BBQ stop in Brenham--worth seeking out! Will definitely be back for their brisket and pork steak.

Wow! Finally found great BBQ! I had the ribs and my wife had the pulled pork. Absolutely amazing. We both had the Mac n cheese. YES! Coleslaw and potato salad definitely accompanied everything. Went on a Saturday morning. Got there about 10:30am. They open at 11am. Line was already forming. Once the doors open the line moves at a good pace. Most everyone has their order ready. The staff is amazing and the decor inside is my type of style. Highly recommended and can't wait to get up there again

We pulled into Brenham with stomachs growling and fingers crossed that LJ's still had burnt ends. The sign didn't say SOLD OUT, so we jumped out of that truck like we were running from a vegan potluck. TL;DR: LJ's BBQ in Brenham delivered on brisket bark, burnt-end brilliance, and a cold elote curveball that worked. Mac and cheese got the daughter's stamp of approval, and I got my 31st Texas Monthly passport stamp. It was midday on a Saturday and the BBQ roadtrip was rolling hard. My daughter decided to join me for a father-daughter bonding session forged in smoke and meat. We pulled into LJ's around 1:45 PM, praying to the brisket gods, and were rewarded with the best news you can see on a Texas BBQ door: no sold out sign. I've been here before, and last time I left with tears in my eyes and a sausage-less soul. But not today. The line was gone, the staff was smiling, and the counter was still slinging burnt ends. We ordered a two-meat plate with burnt ends and moist brisket, plus sides of mac-n-cheese and elote. The burnt ends were barky, rich, sticky, and divine. If a cube of brisket and a candy bar had a lovechild, this would be it. The slice of moist brisket was textbook central Texas. Fat cap rendered just enough, deep pink smoke ring, bark that snapped back like a good comeback. Now listen, this BBQ dad has a strict no-fly zone when it comes to mac and cheese. I didn't even flinch in its direction. But my daughter? She dove in like it owed her money. One bite in and she gave it that look: eyes closed, slow nod, total reverence. She called it cheesy in all the right ways. I call it: not my business. Then came the elote. We both bit in and paused like someone had hit the mute button. Cold? Cold corn? We hadn't read the menu close enough. But then... we kept eating. It was creamy, cheesy, tangy, and hit different on a warm day. That cold elote snuck up on us and stuck the landing. The vibe in LJ's is old-school butcher paper, red-and-white checkered tables, and good tunes humming low. Before we left, we got the all-important stamp in the Top 50 passport and snapped a pic outside by the mural. I rocked my orange shirt like a man on a mission. And I am. Why did the burnt end break up with the sausage? Because it needed space to meat its true potential.

There's a reason why LJ's is listed in Texas Monthly's best new comers; the food is outstanding and it's a throwback to classic Texas BBQ joints. LJ is right there behind the counter asking what you want and cuts your protein. The rest of the staff were friendly asking about sides and drinks and settling the tab. Sausage was good and crisp but not one ounce of grease dripped. The ribs were tender and juicy with a light taste of seasoning that complements the Smokey flavor. Brisket was super tasty, flavorful bark and very tender. The only thing I didn't like is that two of my slices were too think, like a quarter-inch. It's a small dining area but there is outdoor seating and the ambiance feels like a small town joint selling good Texas 'Que.

Went here on a recommendation from a local we had work meeting with. Definitely worth a stop! It's most nostalgic for me when I walk into a BBQ joint that has the red and white plaid table cloths. I love that the line moved quickly and the staff was attentive. We had the chopped beef & sausage Big Dog sandwich, the brisket Mac n cheese and a side of coleslaw. I liked that they cut the brisket off the slab and chopped it fresh in front of you and did not sauce it. Don't sleep on the marinated onions and homemade pickles!!! I added some chopped beef from my sandwich into the boat with those with a touch of sauce and could literally could eat that all day. The sauce was good and peppery, not too runny and not too sweet. The brisket is the star here for sure. Great flavor, moist and good bark. The sausage has good flavor but for my personal preference, was ground to smooth inside. Mac n cheese was cheesy and they use white cheese. Would return if I'm in the area to try some other meats and sides and get more brisket

Wow. What a great meal! The brisket was perfectly cooked and seasoned. The pork ribs were great. I would have liked a touch of sweetness to them, but it was not at all necessary. Just my opinion. The pork steak was smoked just right. The jalapeño cheese sausage was incredible. Don't miss the Mac and cheese. Maybe my favorite of any BBQ place I have been, ever. You can tell that everything is made with love. Great job. We will be seeing you again soon.

Amazing BBQ! A bunch of "good ole boys" making great BBQ! If you are anywhere close it is worth the trip.

Both the Brisket and ribs had absolutely zero flavor. Zero smoke flavor. Zero salt. They really tasted steamed, more than anything. Meat was soft and juicy, but again zero flavor. Cabbage was good Beans were good Best part: pickled onions. I had to put them on everything just to get some flavor. Not really sure why this place is rated so high. Maybe because there is no strong bbq competition in brenham? Maybe an off day?

Such an easy stop off 290. And there were only a few folks ahead of us. Just enough time to decide on an order. We went with the 3 meat plate (moist brisket, ribs, peppered turkey) with 2 sides (mac n cheese and pinto beans). Ribs and brisket were both excellent- smoky and moist. We'd get these again and again. Turkey was disappointing since there wasn't a smoky flavor and wasn't very moist. It was also peppery, which I need to start asking about when I order turkey. That's on me. The mac n cheese had what I'd call white queso component. This isn't your kids' Kraft mac and cheese. Very creamy, slightly spicy and kinda addictive. Yum!

Hands down some of the best bbq I've ever had. The staff is incredible and super friendly. Tip: get there early! There will likely be a line out the door on the weekends. Order the brisket- the bark is so flavorful! I also had the mac and cheese, which was also incredible! Their house pickles are the bomb. They have just enough of the dill taste, but also have some of the natural flavors from the cucumbers coming through. It def complimented the bbq sauce and brisket well- not overpowering like your average pickle. I am also a bit of a pickled onion snob and these are APPROVED by me. Everyone raved about this place, so I figured I had to try it. It was just an "okay" experience for me. I got the brisket Mac and cheese. The brisket was dry, but had a deep black peppery flavor (I didn't mind it, but it can be overpowering for people who don't prefer a sting black pepper taste). The only thing that saved the brisket for me was the cheesiness of the Mac. I also tried the berry cobbler they had which was more like cake than the flaky, crispy crust I prefer on a cobbler. Despite my experience, this place must be doing something right ‍ They sale out quite frequently and always have a line out of the door. I always judge a bbq place by it's brisket, so if that isn't tender and juicy then I'm hesitant to return. Who knows maybe I'll come back just for a side of Mac and cheese and give something else a try. read more

Touring Texas Monthly recommended BBQ spots. "A girl's take on BBQ". Visited Saturday 03/23, 11:00 am. What I ordered: brisket, pork shoulder, collard greens, mac & cheese. My take: the brisket's end pieces were excellent in texture, and full of flavor from the delicious bark, however the flavor didn't carry throughout the brisket. The pork shoulder was too dry. The portions of both meats on my "two meat plate" were generous. The collard greens were perfectly tender and mildly spicy, and the meaty bacon is a wonderful addition. The mac & cheese has a tasty crust on top, and is creamy and cheesy throughout. The place: a nondescript building on the outside, blink and you might miss it. Inside the decor is cute, with an air of Texas pride, and the place feels homey. Pro Tip: At opening there were only a couple folks in line, and 20 minutes later the line was out the door. Grab yourself a free beer from a Brenham local brewery, because beer goes great with bbq! read more

We have driven by this restaurant for the past few years, and never paid any attention. My husband was looking up another bbq place in town, but we didn't want to wait in line. Boy am I glad we chose LJ's today. We won't be going anywhere else from now on! Hands down the best bbq around! I had the carnitas tacos, and my hubby got the burnt ends pork belly. We also ordered the mac n cheese and potatoe salad. They have what tastes like homemade icebox pickles, homemade pickled onions, and jalapeños out for you to garnish your meal with. The potatoe salad tastes like bacon grease and love combined! The pork was outstanding! The atmosphere was wonderful, and the staff were friendly. You have gained a lifelong customer in us! I'm only mad because we've been bringing our scag mower right across the street for years, and never stopped in ! Had I only known then it, I probably would have volunteered to take our mower in all the time, instead of the hubby doing it! Lol Try it! You'll like it! We did!! read more

The brisket is melt-in-your-mouth good! My favorite sides are the pinto beans (flavored perfectly) and the street corn (Absolutely Fantastic). The sausage is also wonderful with the jalapeño cheese as my favorite. The owners are always there working right alongside to provide the best dining experience. They move the line quickly, unlike other BBQ places. The locals want to keep this place for themselves but we know the word is out! read more

Great lunch all around. Tried the 3 meat plate with brisket, sausage and ribs. Ribs were hands down the favorite for us. Seasoned perfectly and falling off the bone. No bbq sauce needed at all which is rare for me. The brisket and ribs were heavily seasoned which we liked and thought delicious. Beans were good. Potato salad was ok but better with the housemade pickled onions and obviously hand made pickles you can get on the side. Mac and cheese was really good-both kids polished it all off and my oldest said it was the best mac and cheese he had ever had. Dont miss out on dessert-the banana pudding was fantastic. Even the kid and husband who dont like banana pudding thought it was great. read more

I follow these guys on Facebook and have been wanting to try it for a while now. I brought a friend along and we got brisket, Turkey, and the jalapeño sausage. Everything was amazing. The brisket is so tender it melts In Your mouth. The pinto beans had a lot of flavor and so did the potato salad. I'll definitely eat here again every time I'm in Brenham. The staff were fantastic as well! Great job guys! Keep it up! read more

We didn't get to sample every thing because they serve until they sell out. The brisket was tender moist seasoned great and the sauce was excellent. The sausage jalapeño cheese was of a texture I have never experienced, so good along with the sides available chicken fried rice, slaw and street corn(not cream corn). Can't imagine the beens and greens and Mac and cheese (not for me). The pickled onions were a weird pink but that was insignificant once you started chewing 'em. And the sliced jalapeños were tasty and not distracting hot. Even the iced tea was the best I've had lately, even the premium bottled brands. I just had a taste of the cobbler, couldn't eat another bite but did get a very large (single serving?) I'm sure to enjoy later. Listed off Main Street but only a few blocks off hwy 290. Traveling from Austin to relatives in Houston and Conroe will have to be scheduled to get to LJ's before they sell out. Service and ambiance were country small town friendly. read more

Ok. You have to go here. I'm from California and I decided I needed to get some BBQ. Try to go early because they run out. I showed up at 2 and they were out of everything except brisket and turkey. Also no collard greens or coleslaw. Nevertheless I got the brisket and turkey and coleslaw and beans. I've never had coleslaw as tasty as that and I'm honking of going back for a bucket of it before I leave ! Brisket was the best. Definitely hit them up. Super friendly. Thank you read more

First, I don't stand in line for BBQ no matter how popular the restaurant. I make it a point to visit in off hours if a place is really popular. LJs is popular because it's good. If you are dead set on something specific might want to get their early to make sure they haven't run out. Some of the best smoked Turkey in Texas. I love the burnt ends and Mac n Cheese. Portions are hearty and the attitude is friendly. I have been an unfortunate visitor that missed out on an item because I was late for lunch but that's ok. If they were out then I'm not getting leftovers like a lot of commercial BBQ joints. No frills, great taste and worth the visit. Just plan your trip accordingly and plan on buying extra for later. read more

When you see a line outside, you know it's going to be worth the wait. Brisket was top notch as was the jalapeno sausage. Turkey was really good and so was the pulled pork! Definitely Worth the trip. read more

Great family-owned BBQ. Potato salad had an unexpectedly spicy kick--which worked for us, but might be a surprise for a kiddo. Brisket, jalapeño sausage, and chicken were all very good, as was the mac and cheese. read more

Was in town for ODP SCT soccer training and hit up this spot due to local recommendations and being on TM top 50. And were we not disappointed!! Everything we had was great, from the sides to the meats. I loved the turkey, wife thought too peppery. She doesn't like much spice anyway, so take that for what it is. read more

Absolute best bbq I've ever eaten. After eating at some of the top ranked Bar B Que joints rated by Texas Monthly, LJ's tops them all. These guys have truly figured it out. Sorry to Truth, Panther City, Franklins, Stanley's, Terry Blacks and a couple more I'm probably missing. You all have good que, but LJ's in Brenham Tx hits the highest mark. From being greeted walking in, to the owners thanking us and wishing the best when walking out, there is absolutely nothing bad I could say about this place. LJ's is a must stop for anyone wanting great food! read more

This BBQ WAS ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!! Amazing staff and environment. The brisket is what really stole the show! Seasoned to perfection, amazing smoke ring, the bark was perfect, and the juiciness created a symphony of bbq flavor. I might go back again today! read more

The meat here is perfect! I never feel the need to add any extra sauces or seasoning. The coleslaw has a nice kick to it and the collard greens are buttery and the texture is perfect. The owners and staff are pretty amazing as well. Definitely worth the trip. read more

Very tasty BBQ (Brisket, Turkey, Pulled Pork). Meat was extremely tender. Mac n Cheese excellent. Large portions. Very pleasant dining experience. Note: The meat has a very tasty rub on it rather than a BBQ sauce. Very popular place but service was very friendly and fast (line was almost to the door but we were placing our order within 10 minutes of getting in line) read more

I should have taken a picture but the chopped brisket sandwich ain't nothing to play with huge sandwich with A LOT of meat well worth the money with a drink was only 12.99 meat was tender and juicy for sure cutting board is full of juice where you watch them cut up the meats bbq sauce bottle at the table was extra tangy but there's hot sauce as well if you want a little heat very nice small town bbq place read more

Fantastic BBQ. The dry rub rib is juicy and the meat falls right off the bone. The rub is perfect, no bbq sauce needed. The price is great too. I will definitely stop by again whenever on 290. read more

We decided to go for a drive today and ended up near Brenham around lunchtime. I saw this place had great ratings so we decided to stop and eat here. There was a line outside and normally I never want to wait in lines but the ratings were so good I figured it had to be great. The line went really fast. We even got a free sample while we were waiting in line of something my husband loved so much he ordered when we got inside. My brisket was the best brisket I have ever tasted. I also had potato salad which was amazing and their macaroni and cheese which was unbelievably good. My husband had pinto beans along with some burnt ends and Mac and cheese. Super friend staff! Hot damn did we hit the jackpot! Passing through from Houston back to Central TX around lunchtime we were looking for something tasty and local and man did Yelp steer us right. LJ's was ALMOST sold out when we showed up about 1:30pm and my travel companion and I were lucky enough to get the last of the brisket. We each got 2 meat plates and 2 sides. I had ribs and brisket she had pulled pork and brisket. Let me tell you...flavor, flavor FLAVOR! I have been to many TOP BBQ joints all over TX including many in the Top 50. This little joint...ranks right up there with them. The potato salad was just like one I make at home, a delicious loaded baked potato salad mmm and the pinto beans were just full of flavor, fantastic! Now when your sides are that good, you know they're doing things right. The brisket was tender, beautiful smoke ring and super tender with flavorful bark. The ribs were great as well, cut beautifully good flavor, nice flavor, slightly more tender than I like because it slid off the bone (I like a little bite to it) but many people like it super tender like that. This spot is right on Main St and that's where it belongs, put it at the top of your must stop lists whenever NEAR Brenham!! read more

One with chili and the other with bacon. Both of them were delicious and they came out of the kitchen onto out table within 10 minutes. We also had the breaded shrimp appetizer with Buffalo sauce and ranch sauce. Every thing was tasty and freshly prepared. The service was great, curious, and friendly. We also had a chance to speak with Pioneer, Mark Renn, the owner himself. He told us all about this picturesque historic building with a fantastic layout and decor. I ordered the Brisket Plate with Black -Eyed Peas and Coleslaw. When the young woman handed it to me, It had Pintos on it rather than Black-Eyed Peas. When I cited the error she indignantly snapped, "That's what you ordered!" Strike 2! (who argues with civil paying customers?) I said, " I'm not trying to be any trouble. I just want what I ordered." at which point the older woman told her to give me a side of Black-Eyed Peas, which at this point seemed completely academic. We found a table, found our way to the drinks and also to the Barbecue Sauce and various condiments. I really wish I could say that this was the best Barbecue that I ever put in my mouth but unfortunately, I have to say just the opposite. Strike 3! This is singularly the worst barbecue experience that I have ever had anywhere in Texas or elsewhere in the country. The Brisket was gray, dry, and there wasn't a smoke ring in sight. My first impression was yes this is a good thing. To place an order, you must approach a tent covered kiosk and type in your order with your phone number and they will text you when your order is ready that's the simple part...... the hard part is actually getting the order that you placed . A customer in front of me ordered several sandwiches only to find out that some of her items were not placed in her bag, and they actually recalled her order, and they had to simply reassemble the order altogether; that was rather depressing, but I thought, simply by ordering three items they could not mess up my order.....Not so fast. I simply ordered a rack of ribs, 1 pound of sliced turkey and a single individual order of collard greens.. when I got home, I realized that they did not include the collard greens. Wow technically 1/3 of my order was missing altogether. As for the quality of the food that I actually received, the ribs were quite large and flavorful although I thought the smoky flavor was a bit much but the turkey was absolutely fabulous. I could cut it with a fork. . They do include sauce and other condiments, but they're spicy sauce was way too spicy for any of us to consume, and their sweet sauce must've been made with an overabundance of molasses because we threw those sauce packets away. So the spicy sauce must've been prepared in the house because you had to dip it into a container while you waited for the food to be prepared but the sweet sauce was in a pre-packaged container and yet there was no indication of any ingredients, even though it was obviously Prepared by an off site vendor(probably H-E-B out of San Antonio) . I suggest having a bottle of "Head" sweet barbecue sauce, handy to enhance the meal. Although they did offer pickles and onions with the order, there was barely enough to simply cover two slices of bread. I spent over $60 for this meal, and to get such a lame amount of condiments is unacceptable. They at least should have asked me how many portions of pre-bagged, onions, and pickles That I would like to have included with my order. I will give them another try because I have yet to sample their brisket and other highly anticipated items on their menu ..........

This past weekend we hosted a family "throw down" BBQ at the ranch. Son brought in his BBQ from a "top of the mark" restaurant just outside Austin. Daughter brought her offering from a restaurant in Plano connected to one of the famous Lockhart places. And we presented our selection from LJ's. Our local LJ's brisket was declared over all winner with every vote. The sauce competition from LJ's only had one person, after a long and painful period of decision making, say his offering was "slightly" better. We'll be back and back and back for more! read more

Great BBQ brisket, pork, and sausage. They also have ribs on certain days. A little bit of food truck cuisine in downtown Brenham. Great taste, and very consistent, unlike some other small operations. They serve sandwiches and by the pound, but also have great tasting brisket tacos and other stuff. Menu varies by the day, which gives you a great reason to try something new. read more
