So I went and got there two minutes after they opened and there was already a line. I ordered the Kung Pao Chicken combo. It was very spicy, but I ate ALL of it. The fried rice was great, and the crab puff, egg roll, and fried wonton were perfectly crispy. I also got to try their fried fish and jalapeño chicken wings. They're very tasty. I must say that these are some goooood wings. Good portion size, crispy, love the jalapeño flavor. Fried rice was tasty but a tad greasy. U wait in line on the sidewalk slowly approaching the window, which can be a little scary, this is a gathering area for gangs and drug dealing. Once ordered most people wait in their cars and check back periodically. They tell ya 25 min, but it was more like 45 min. This is not a part of town you want to stand around on the street waiting. In our 45 minute wait we saw 2 drug deals, several gang members, a patron with a red SUV that had bullet holes through the back hatch and sides of his car, he'd replaced the windows. We were there late afternoon. So I would say it's a big "NO!" after it gets dark. Honestly, this restaurant just needs to move its business to a safer area day or night for us to return. I have been going to Liyuen for 20 years! It is the closes Chinese food I found to New York's Chinese food. The amount of food they gave you was amazing and the taste so good. However, in 2020 the portion sizes started getting smaller, but the taste was still there so I could deal with that. The past year I noticed less meat in my Pork fried rice and the container that was a small is now a large. I went today 12/18/2015 and could not wait to eat the wonderful Pork Fried rice after three fork fulls of rice there was NO pork, started moving the rice around and found some but no where near what it use to be. Also, it took 45 minutes to get the food watched two groups of people come and go they said it was because I ordered chicken wings! I always order chicken wings and max time was 25 minutes. I am sad because I have to find another place. This was my go to spot! The cost and the smaller portion sizes is just not doing it! What we have is placing an order, standing on the corner of 7th avenue & pima, and getting some really good wings. There is plenty of street parking in this industrial part of town. You walk up, place an order, and they hand you a number. I didn't want fried rice with my order - just wings. I ordered six wings. I didn't realize each wing includes one drum, a flat, and the wing tip. Getting 6 wings here is like ordering more than 12 wings at BWW. These are soooooo good. I ordered the jalapeno wings. They were brined, spicy, crispy, and steaming hot. Like too hot to eat for several minutes. You could easily drive home and still have these be really hot. The jalapeno wings had a nice burn to them but genuinely had good jalapeno flavor. They weren't over the last top with seasoning and not sweet at all. This place is straight up in the hood, where you will be waiting quite a while for your food to be ready, so 25 min wait is really a 40 min wait. Lol, no joke. Well I have to give this place the coveted 5 star! We called in our order and thank god we did- it's a super long wait with tons of people picking up and placing orders! We had 5 adults got the Happy Family A a small Mongolian beef and 5 egg rolls! The only thing I wish is that we had ordered 10 egg rolls! It was a fantastic meal for a very reasonable price! It's in a rough industrial district of Phoenix and it's weird getting your food from security cage on the side of an old building but it works for me! This didn't bother me one iota, but others reading this review *might*. I was hoping for a dine in option; there isn't. One lone window is the service portal. My suggestion is to park nearby, keep the vehicle running with A/C, as they issue you a worn, laminated order number that they announce once your order is ready. I rolled up on a busy afternoon but it seems to be the case all the time at popular, yummy places. I ordered the Y1 Chicken pieces and shrimp fried rice (sorry no photos, I was HANGRY) That was some of the best fried chicken I've consumed. The shrimp to fried rice ratio was great. Not a local from Phoenix so really relied on Yelp to find a Chinese food place like the few that I know in DTLA. Liyuen was exactly what I was looking for and beyond. When I arrived to place my order personally there was a line of about 10 people waiting in 110° heat. When you see that, you know you got a good place. Yes, it's literally a hole in the wall in a not so great part of town. A place like this is all about the food, the value, and the generous portion so absolutely leave your bougie girlfriend behind she will not be pleased. I had to order party trays for our volleyball team and keep it within a tight budget while keeping everybody happy, mission accomplished from the pick up and payment. What was not obvious was how fantastic the food was when it was being served to everyone. Everyone made a comment that it was some of the best Chinese food they've had. We had the chicken lo mein, house special fried rice, Mongolian chicken, and beef and broccoli, and certainly orange chicken. Everything fantastic! The trays were so packed that there was so much food left over after feeding nearly 30 people that a few of our dads and myself took the remaining food and distributed the trays amongst the homeless nearby. I wouldn't go back their wait is 30+min the customer service is pretty bad and their order system is horrible. Food wise the orange chicken wasn't crunchy enough for me, the sweet and spicy wasn't good period & the jalapeno wings are good but nothing special. The rice and noodles were good though. Also make sure that you get a receipt because when they take your order they don't repeat it and it seems like they aren't paying attention. I placed a large pickup order and when I arrived I could see our food being packaged from the small pick up window. It was an insane value for our money! Two people can definately get their fill up from just sharing a Combo plate. We were able to feed several people and have leftovers. Must try's: Jalapeño Wings!! If you don't mind waiting outside to place your order and then running into your AC vehicle to wait for 20-30 minutes while frequently checking to see if your number is called, you will continue to be disappointed .
