Really boring... the tempo was much too slow to dance to. It was mostly hip-hop, with a mellow beat. It had some synth mixed in, but that doesn't make it dance music.. I used to go to Necto often (mondays), but the atmosphere is disturbing there, so I tried here instead. But it's just not a dance club. It's a make-out-on-the-dance-floor club. Friday night, for reference. I was truly not impressed with DJ Kevin Michaels. There were multiple times where the beat should have hit or got heavy, and it didn't. read more

LIVE is life. While I was a student at the University of Michigan, I didn't discover LIVE until my senior year. Since I graduated, I've been back a handful of times with my most recent visit being for a friend's bachelor party. Since it was winter break, spots on South U were pretty empty so we gave LIVE a try on a Friday night. And I'm happy we did. LIVE is everything you want in a club. As you walk in, they have a coat check-in desk for like $2. Definitely worth it to not lug your coat around as you're breaking it down on the dance floor. The front of the bar has some seating and a long bar. Since this was a bachelor party, you know we were feeling it. Soon enough, a large group of dudes (me including) were twerking on the dance floor. It's hard not to when the music is always on point. Mostly hip-hop with some top 40 and EDM mixed in for good measure. And there's always nice scenery if you know what I mean. Overall, one of my favorite spots in Ann Arbor. read more

First and pretty sure last time going. Went for a Charli theme night. Worst DJ set I have ever been to. I was there for almost 2 hours and there were four Charlie songs played. Went expecting Charlie, instead got Justin Bieber songs from 15 years ago and a horrible dubstep version of Milkshake. Skipped songs, feedback, missed transitions, DJ talking over songs. Honestly, they could've just plugged someone's phone in on Spotify Shuffle for Charli Xcx and called it a day, that would've been perfect. So after the disaster that's Necto, me and my friend walked to Live and didn't wait in line too long (this was before 11 pm so that's why the line wasn't bad yet, keep reading). The club is WAY nicer than the first place and we were ready to finally have some fun. Problem is, this place is way too small for the amount of people that were in there. We literally couldn't even move and its not really enjoyable to "dance" when you have no space to even breathe. I couldn't believe how packed this place was!! We decided to go to a bar because my friend was getting claustrophobia from the craziness and as we left, the line was literally a mile long at midnight!! Clearly this club is poppin but please move to a bigger building so we can all enjoy it and have some space to breathe!! I would personally go back because overall it wasn't a bad club but it's just super busy on saturday nights so be prepared to get there early or not get in at all. read more

I was accused of throwing a drink, and then the club reviewed the video and found out that staff member had not told the truth. Before it gets super crowded, I really like LIVE for flailing on the dance floor. It's definitely an older group, but now that I am a graduate, I am one of the older people. The drinks aren't stellar, but the prices aren't ridiculous. A rum (Captain Morgan) and coke was $6 and a Long Island was $8.50. I like that the music is more electronic dance, rather than simply top 40. They played a ton of Drake, which is a major plus for me. read more

Don't come here if your Latino/Hispanic, the security and DJ hate Latinos. They will ignore you - music requests, complaints, anything. My friend and I were shoved and when we tried to hold our ground the security accused us of being aggressive. The person who shoved us then tried to kick us and the security guard still defended her, telling us to step back. Also the music is always the same it's like the DJ plays a Spotify playlist. There's a nice big bar, drinks are decently priced, but you have to pay a cover to get in, so that's not really a win-win I came here on a Friday night because people said it was the best night... what a disappointment. There is a spacious dance floor, too bad the music consisted of bad techno and house. It was basically the same beat song after song. If you like hip hop music, this is not the place to go. Went here for 90s night last night, but I've been a few times before, also. It's a fun club and the drinks are mostly reasonably priced. Last night I ran to the bathroom and when I came back, my friends had been invited to dance on stage.... Security wasn't letting more people up but someone else convinced them to, so that was fun. Free drinks up there too! I didn't really like how the 90s music was interspersed with so much non-90s stuff but oh well. Cover was $5 and they have a coat check for $2 if needed. So this Friday was my first time going to Live. I had heard mixed reviews about it, but I wanted to see for myself. So when we first got there there wasn't a line, which is unusual for live, I guess. I'd like to think that it's because U of M is still on break and most of the college kids are gone. With that being said they still charged a $5 cover fee even though most of the place was empty. I would say that was good for it being my first time, and because it was empty I got a pretty good feel of the vibe and the layout without being overwhelmed. When we came the Dance Floor was very spacious so it wasn't overwhelming to where I couldn't dance, like I had heard was sometimes the case. We had put our coats down on the nearest booth and went off to dance. The DJ was playing stuff from what I felt like was middle school. That I didn't like it all! I didn't pay a cover to sing to Justin Bieber, so I went to sit down where my coat was. The bouncer came over so aggressively and told me I couldn't sit there, and I told him that those were my coats. And he said, "well you gotta move" and he said it so aggressively that I had to take a moment to just look at him. Are you really taking an aggressive power grab at me right now? I told him he needed to hold on because I couldn't carry 4 jackets on my own. He looked like he was about to get even more aggressive, like angry! Like on the verge of grabbing or hitting me... That made me uneasy. I went and got my friends to get their coats, and I got mine and left. After seeing other reviews, I see this is a problem and ownership should address it before a patron gets hurts at the hands of staff and rightfully sues! read more

The staff here is completely off-putting. I've come here before, but on Saturday, October 23rd was one of the worst nights. The bouncers and security were outrageously rude. They will swear at you and put their hands on you to get you where they want you. I came here on October 23rd with my two girlfriends. One of the bouncers, named Montral, told one of my friends to get off the dance podium. When I asked him why, he told me that he didn't answer to me, and "never fu**ing will." as he pushed me out of the way. One of the managers, named Brian, was equally (if not more) rude to me when I approached him about not only Montral, but also a wet area where I had slipped and suggested that maybe he get staff to clean it up, telling me that Montral was only doing his job and "I want you out." whilst grabbing me by the arm and escorting me away from him as if I had offended him in some way. It would be one thing if my friends and I came in here, drank too much, and caused a scene. But the way we were treated was completely uncalled for and unjustified. I spoke to the main manager, Chris, about these incidents only with the empty promise of speaking to Brian and Montral regarding their unprofessionalism and offering up a "free drink" for the trouble. Unless being disrespected and treated like scum is your cup of tea, I suggest going elsewhere. read more

I'm a big fan of LIVE! I tend to come a bit earlier than peak, so that there is more room on the dance floor for me to actually dance (not just bounce in close proximity to other people). The crowd is a bit older than most of the party places in Ann Arbor, and I kind of enjoy that. It feels a bit more mature and fun to me. The drinks are a bit expensive, but just get a strong one and you'll be set. The layout of the club is super cool as well. read more

I've been here a handful of times - here's my 'need to know' rundown: - There's usually a cover ($5) - Lines after 10pm on weekends, prepare yourselves - Music is dance-style popular music - Different DJs different nights, some fun themes/special nights - Average to expensive priced drinks - Avarage bar selection - The main attraction is the dancefloor - there are places to sit/stand, but it's generally WAY too loud and/or crowded for that to really matter - Feels like: undergrad scene, for the grad/adult crowd My tip: If you stay out late, it's just a short walk to the Fleetwood Diner (24H) for some late-night eats! read more

This is as good as it gets for grad students or those trying to break out of the South U bar cycle. When it comes to options on Main St, I usually turn to Rush St to party. But LIVE trumps its Main St. siblings with a near-perfect layout, friendly service, and good music (which is sometimes hard to find in Ann Arbor nightlife). Ambiance is classy, but not conceded. Definitely my new favorite place in Ann Arbor. Update: went here last night. We reserved a VIP section with bottle service (which they confirmed via email) only to get there and find out they gave the VIP spot we reserved to another group who weren't even getting bottle service. Put a damper on everyone's night and much of our group left after finding out. They ended up getting us a regular booth after 20 minutes of waiting around but it wasn't what we asked for. This place is still awesome, but you can't do that to a party if we're about to drop at least a few hundred. read more

Entering the venue was great and the staff were nice about letting us in. Inside it was a little more chaotic but that's to be expected at a night club. What's damning is that some friends of mine (a couple) were ordering water (of all things) at the bar and got kicked out. The bartender had misinterpreted the guys actions as being aggressive and flagged him to a bouncer, which is alright. Its good that bartenders do these things. When the bouncer came to kick the guy out, the girl (whose 21st it was, no less) started explaining that everything was alright but was ignored. When the guy tried to stop and explain he found himself with his face on the floor. At that point I just made sure no one was too angry because then they'd have a justified reason to kick us out or worse; communication was not going to work. There's always room for error but this is where common sense could have prevailed. Fortunately no one was harmed. There are ~67,000 bars in the US and it's unfortunate that this had to be the one to make a mistake, but it's also one that didn't have to occur. read more

SETTING: A typical club venue. It's not big at all so you will get the lay of the land very quickly, but it's not small to the point that you feel boxed in. Two bars for getting drinks. A few booths, tables, and 2-3 VIP areas. Bathrooms are upstairs. EXPERIENCE: As with any club experience, its the people and the music who make it great. In general the crowd of 20-30 year-olds was pretty tame. I noticed it didn't get too packed until after 1am. Music was with a mix of trance, house, trap, with a tiny bit of hip-hop sneaked in. SERVICE: $5 cover. Bar service was actually pretty fast, and the bar staff was very nice and efficient. IMPRESSIONS: I'm not opposed to coming here. Music was okay and the crowd was kind of mellow. Unpretentious and 'boutique'-sized venue. Trendy, clean interior with nice ambient club lighting. We went on a saturday for a ladies night out and although it was empty when we got there (yes it was early, around 10:30), after a couple rounds of drinks it got filled up, but not unbearably so (I'm *so* past the days when I thought 'wall to wall' people was a fun thing). The crowd is young professional, not college, so not drink-dropping rowdy, and unfortunately there was a few lone stragglers that only went there to watch the dancers (they get blocked out of view once the crowd got going). I like what another reviewer (Matthew C.) said: "fun, stupid dancing." People are here to have a good time and dance; aren't too serious about themselves. All for it. I really liked the DJ, he played a mix of pop/radio music and hip-hop. BTW, I have to mention the bartenders were inventive. We didn't have exact drink orders, only saying "give me something fruity" or "coconutty" or "surprise us." I enjoyed every drink they made us (4 rounds?). However I never knew the price of anything, we all just took turns handing our credit cards for each round. They were probably giving us top shelf stuff, which is partly why the drinks were so gooooood. Great time with the gals, will be going back there again! read more

I'm being unfair, but my enjoyment of this place was severely curtailed by the fact that NO ONE WAS DANCING. It was a great dj, the bartender was friendly, the place was clean... I suppose I went on the wrong night, which was a Friday. Maybe Saturday is better? But the dance floor never filled up. I know that my review, merely being based on the night, is highly unfair, but this is yelp, so suck it. Overall it's a good place. This bar started off fun but completely ruined our night when the staff decided to take a power trip and belittle our birthday girl. The bouncer, Kevin, tried to turn our birthday girl away after letting the rest of us in. This place is NOT friendly to those of us of Asian heritage and I strongly recommend avoiding this bar unless you are a stereotypic blonde white girl. I visited LIVE on a Friday night with my girlfriend and a few friends from work, and had an enjoyable time. LIVE has a pretty upbeat dance scene on Friday nights, and gets packed the closer it gets to midnight. Be aware that there's a cover charge, so bring some cash (or use the ATM). We arrived a little earlier than the peak time to carve out some dancing room, and enjoyed listening to the DJ who played music people actually want to listen to. The crowd is a little young (a lot of college students), so the scene can get unexpectedly rowdy. The bar is well-stocked, though it can be tough to get a drink due to sheer demand. We had such a good time that we stuck-around until well-after midnight. Overall, I'd recommend visiting LIVE with friends on a Friday or Saturday night to dance. read more

Live has really made a comeback since the new ownership took over last year. The dance floor is back to being packed on friday and saturday night, good dj's spinning music i could get my grind on to. It is one of the few dance clubs in ann arbor you can still go to with out being hoarded masses of undergrads. Drink specials are not quite South U prices, but still very reasonable compared to most of the main st area. Overall the quality of the crowd has really picked up in the last year and it has re-established it's self as one of the go to spots in the city. read more

So I'm from Los Angeles and did not expect to be clubbing in Ann Arbor. I've seen a lot of bars but really no clubs. And a friend didn't have a good time at Nekto. Got dragged here after Bar Louie and Mash around midnight. Five dollar cover. Two dollar coat check. Good thing I had cash but they've got an ATM. Drinks at the bar but I'd already had enough so I don't know pricing. Good dance floor! Good DJ! Hip-hop and dance music all night. My group and I got our groove thang on! Left when club closed about 2:30 but definitely enjoyed it and will be back when I need to get my club fix. read more

The worst place you can possibly go to in Ann Arbor. The staff is insufferable, especially the guy that looks like a black version of the bad guys in the Matrix. I came yesterday and they said it was free before 11 as opposed to the usual $5 but today the people at the door changed it at 10:45 when there wasn't even a line. I asked to see a manager but a bouncer pretended to be one. Their drinks are all watered down, they don't use the real alcohol brands, you're better off drinking before you come here m. They also make their own sour mix which always tastes rotten. It sucks that this and Rush are the only dance options downtown Ann Arbor for 21 and up. read more
