The staff they had at the convention were all super-cool people. They served great drinks. I haven't seen their drink menu, so I just said a few words about what I like, and they mixed up good stuff -- at reduced alcohol per my request. Perfect! Best of all, they had the acclaimed science fiction and fantasy author Mary Robinette Kowal as their special guest. (But she lives in North Carolina, so don't expect her as a regular in the Pittsburgh location.) Space Bar is obviously LGBT+ friendly, but it's an everyone bar. OK, maybe not everyone: it will be more fun if you're interested in science fiction and fantasy, and don't upset the vibe. I'll be sure to visit the in-person location next time I'm in Pittsburgh.

It came with BBQ chips, and when our bartender--the same guy from that morning--noticed how much I loved them, he brought me extra. Such a thoughtful touch. The rest of our drinks were equally inventive and well-crafted. I admittedly had some doubts about whether the creativity would translate into cocktails that actually tasted good, but they completely proved me wrong. There is a list of fun themed drinks served in quirky glasses that match the theme of the drink (a mummy, for example). I visited three times and tried a different drink each time. One thing is that they can (and often do) search your bag to make sure you don't steal the glassware. Sad that they need to so that, but I guess I understand why they need to check. What we weren't told when we were seated was that, because of the Pitt football event, the restaurant would later institute a one-in, one-out policy. By the time our final guest arrived, there was a line around the block, and the manager, Anna, refused to let her enter even though she was simply joining our existing table, not adding another party or taking up additional capacity. Anna told us that everyone needed to have their ID scanned. We had absolutely no issue with that and were happy to comply. The issue was that no one communicated when we were seated that a member of our party arriving later could potentially be prevented from joining us. What was most frustrating was Anna's response when we tried to explain the situation. She seemed completely disinterested in understanding what had happened or finding a reasonable solution, and appeared far more focused on managing the football event than addressing the experience of customers who were already seated inside. Had someone simply told us when we arrived, "Your entire party needs to be here before the event starts or they may not be allowed in," we would have made other arrangements and had our family dinner elsewhere. I understand needing crowd-control and ID policies during a major event. What I don't understand is seating a family for dinner without communicating those restrictions, then refusing to allow the final member of that already-seated party to join them and showing little interest in addressing the situation when it became a problem. A really disappointing way to handle what should have been a straightforward family dinner.
