For the life of me I can't figure out how people rate the food there to be good. One of the worst meals in recent memory. Started with calamari for an appetizer. It was tough and super salty. Ordered the mahi mahi. It came overcooked and tough with unflavored Uncle Bens rice. The server was unapologetic. My companion ordered the crab cakes. Very little crab, mostly filler and tasteless. If quaint shops and storefronts are your thing, Lititz....a town nine miles north of Lancaster in the heart of Amish country, is a place worth visiting. We decided to explore the area and just happened upon the annual Fire and Ice Festival, which is a combination of fun ice sculptures placed around the town sidewalks, and a chili cookoff, which is held at the Elementary school. After a long wait to get into the cookoff, we punted and decided to find a restaurant in town. At the main intersection, we found the General Sutter Inn. Built in 1764, this place will remind folks of the William Penn Inn, Joseph Ambler Inn, and other old historic dining establishments. Since we had the SUV (our big baby stroller) we decided to eat in the cafe section called Zum Anker, rather than annoying the higher paying guests in the main restaurant. After negotiating some steps (Lititz is NOT very handicapped accessible) we sat down to a decent meal. Since I was a bit nervous about the baby roaring into song at any moment, I was a bit annoyed by the laconic service. In fact I strolled the streets for ten minutes waiting for my food. A bird house store......how does that stay in business? Amazes me, but obviously they're doing something right. Anyway, I had the soup and sandwich special and Emily had the chicken salad. She loved her meal.....I was not overly impressed. But her's looked better....she chose wisely. If you're looking for edgy in Lititz....you're far afield. But if down home country with a touch of ubiquitous religion (The Ten Commandments are posted everywhere....even at the pharmacy), then stop on by get a taste of the old ways. Came with a friend to enjoy the patio area & the (FINALLY) spring weather. It is right in the heart of the cute town of Lititz, and I was happy to be there... at first. One of the first things I noticed was that they have mixed smoking/non-smoking on the patio. Gross. Nothing puts you off your appetite more than someone's cancer stick smoke blowing across your table (even though it was at the Adirondack chairs/circle, smoke was still obviously coming into the dining area). I understand they cannot control if someone is smoking, say, on the public sidewalk while walking past the restaurant- but to have a smoking area for patrons ON the patio is dumb and off-putting. Our service was nothing to write home about either. Our server, whose name we were never told, took our drink orders, then disappeared for a good ten minutes. Once we received our drinks, she ran off before we could place our order. We finally ordered our food (some appetizers to share), which after quite a wait was delivered by a server that was not our own. By this time we needed drink refills (water & soda), which this other server did not offer to grab for us. I had to practically flag our server down for our refills. Once we were finished, it again was a chore to get our check and pay. All the servers seemed frazzled, hectic, and busy. Perhaps it is time for General Sutter Inn to hire more servers, or at least some support staff (food runners, etc). Or the manager (or at least a gentleman that looked like the manager) could have stepped in to help instead of standing near the bar watching everyone like an overseer. Reasonable corkage fee, white linen service, friendly and knowledgeable staff, delicious food. They would have gotten a 5 star rating but due to the construction and renovation of this historic building they couldn't have separate thermostats in the lobby and dining room. What a treasure the patio is in beautiful downtown Lititz. We summer in Canada and always hurry home to dine on the patio at the Sutter. Delicious food at sensible prices and great service. Complete letdown. One star for the friendly bartender in the Bulls Head Pub, one star for the food and ambience. Zero stars for the service and everything else. Accidentally booked dinner here thinking it was Bull Heads Pub but when we got there and walked in, we were confused by no hostess in sight and tables stating to order our food and drinks at the bar. My husband went to the hostess stand of Sutter Inn and inquired and it turns out I had accidentally booked us at the Inn as the Pub doesnt take reservations. Oh well we figured we'd give the inn a try because it seemed like a nicer and quieter area to sit, eat and celebrate. We asked if we could be seated earlier (an hr) and were met with a visibly frazzled and not particularly friendly hostess telling us that that was not possible. No worries about that but be a bit more polite about it. My husband went to the bar to see if they had a cocktail list (yes, its a Pub I get it but still- a small cocktail list shouldnt be too much to ask for). No such luck- he was told they were "in transition" seasonally and wouldnt have a set cocktail list until Monday. Weird. Ive never heard of a place doing that before- usually they offer the older cocktail menu (winter, spring). I decided on a glass of rose (I wanted to get my inner basic on a bit)- again no such luck...they were out of rose- on a Saturday night in May. It happens so I shrugged it off and settled for something else but the whole no cocktail list no rose did strike me as odd. Anyway fast forward to us being seated by the less than friendly hostess and it took quite some time to even be approached by our server- we should have known then it was not going to get much better. A single filet was run to our table by a confused looking food runner at which point my mom decided to politely inquire about the appetizer (which hadnt yet come out). The food runner stated he would check on it and a few minutes later our server swooped in to take the filet that was in front of me and apologize for the error- stating it was not mine (even though I had ordered filet). Appetizer: fried pickles- probably some of the best damn fried pickles Ive ever had. The delivery of our food was strangely timed with noticeably odd gaps in between the appetizer and entrees. Meanwhile our server seemed to be rather attentive to the larger party table next to us- which I get it- more people, usually more tips but be a professional about it and dont make it so obvious. While our server was refilling our water, my mother inquired about the food and our server explained the kitchen was behind because of a private event and they were very busy. No real apology or prior warning or anything just like it was completely fine that we were sitting around wondering where our entrees were. Im sorry but I dont care if you have a 400 person circus going on in a different room, that doesnt mean other guests suffer for it. This reeks of poor training and management. The food itself was very good- I had a filet med rare and it was cooked perfectly. The asparagus and fried mashed potatos were delicious. My husband enjoyed his steak frites and my mom really enjoyed her burger. The kitchen was on point. Did I mention only I was given a steak knife and as an afterthought by the food runner? C'mon. Finally, our meals were cleared and we asked for the bill- needless to say it took a little bit more time than necessary to pay. I can count on one hand the number of times I have ever left a server less than 20%. I even cringed doing it but I left 15% this time around and honestly I was being fair. Not once did we see a manager even walk through the dining area. Will not return and will steer everyone clear of this place. Just abysmal service and lack of the basics. read more

I used to frequent here, the staff comes and goes a bit, but has been fun and at times absolutely awesome and gone out of their way to make occasion dinners fun. The last few times I wasn't as impressed by the food, it just wasn't as good as it used to be. But maybe they'll offer more new things soon, you never know. I went here with my girlfriend and her dad for dinner on a Friday night. It sits in the heart of Lititz so if you do go here, plan to take some extra time to walk around and explore. Lots of shops in a quaint town; definitely a place worth checking out! The staff was polite and we were were quickly seated in a the dining room which had a nice classy hotel feeling to it. I ordered the bison burger, my girlfriend got the pear salad and her dad ordered the Salmon. The bison burger is one of my favorite things to order and it was absolutely delicious. The pear salad was huge, and although it could have used a higher pear to spinach ratio, was very good. When the salmon was cooked medium well and wasn't too dry. It had a good salty flavor to it. All meals were very filling and at a reasonable price. This is a classy restaurant in a prime location of Lititz. I wouldn't hesitate to walk back in here next time I'm back in town. I stayed here just before Christmas in 2014 with my girlfriend. The management was very nice and very helpful with all of our questions. The rooms are very cute and it is all quite modern but also keeps the nice B&B theme. I proposed to my girlfriend that weekend and the staff was even better in making the weekend very memorable. Went here recently (10/2010) while in the area on business. Very nice dining room, food was good too. Had a salad that was excellent, a risotto that was very good, roasted chicken was good. We both ordered the special and the steak was too salty to eat, after letting the waitress know we were given a single steak each, after the rest of our food sat for 15 minutes as we waited. Following our meal we asked the waitress for another glass of wine, and were told there was another reservation for our table in 20 minutes so we would need to be quick. The waiter returned to tell me that the British pub foods were made off sight and the pasties hadn't been delivered yet. So, let's see here. We have a restaurant that doesn't prepare it's own food? Alarm bells should gone off followed by a hasty exit. Settled for a bland pork pie. Strike one!The scotch egg was over cooked. Strike two! Mrs. Robert S. ordered the turkey sandwich. One slice of turkey, no provolone cheese, one small pepper, & a gallon of chipotle ranch. Half an hour later she became quite ill for a couple of hours. My husband and I had our first visit to The General Sutter for dinner a week ago. We loved the ambiance of the restaurant as well as the food. The General Sutter sits in the beautiful town of Lititz. It has an attached patio for those who desire to sit outside along with a pub. The main dining room is not very large so if you intend to go on a Friday or Saturday night you should consider making reservations. To say the least it is definitely a quaint place to dine at, and have a romantic dinner. We started with an order of the peanut soup. Yes, peanut soup. Who knew it even existed. If it is on the menu it is worth trying for sure. It has a peanut butter flavor, as well though with a bit of a zip to it. My husband & I both loved it. We continued our meal with an order of the lettuce wrap ceviche. Freshness at its best! They make a phenomenal ceviche, and once again it is worth trying. My husband had the Ribeye Cap which came with a delicious mash potatoes and fresh vegetable. It was cooked perfectly and the taste was outstanding. I chose the Steak Frites. This was a flat iron steak with French fries. Unfortunately mine was slightly over cooked, but it had amazing flavors. The frites were delicious, but I wish I had chosen the filet or rib cap as my husband ordered. The house Merlot was excellent too. The staff was super friendly, and made me excited to make another trip there soon. Hands down the Sutter is worth visiting. You won't be disappointed! read more

We absolutely loved having our reception at the Sutter. The space is beautiful, especially when it is decorated for Christmas like it was for our wedding last month. Jeff, the event coordinator there, is an absolute pleasure to work with and was more than willing to accommodate our many random requests! He doesn't treat you like a dollar sign like some venues do, and all of our interactions with the Sutter felt warm and welcoming. Jeff really made the day a wonderful experience and was very attentive to us and our needs the day of. I would not hesitate to recommend the Sutter to ANYONE, regardless of the event type, but especially for couples looking for a ceremony or reception venue! A friend and I ate out on their patio last Friday and were really unhappy with the slow service. We arrived at 6:15 pm and it took three and a quarter hours to complete our meal! We had expected to have a quick dinner and then browse the shops, but by the time we paid our bill the shops were all closed. They obviously were not staffed to accommodate the crowd that they *should* have been expecting. My food was fine; my friend thought her nachos had been left under a heat lamp too long. We went for a wedding and stayed the night. The ceremony and reception were both beautiful and the staff was fantastic. Every employee I've spoken to has been very nice. There was a misunderstanding with the front desk staff when checking in, we were told to park on the street but our car ended up getting towed due to a parade. However, management was more than helpful and promptly reimbursed me for towing costs which was great. The food there is always awesome, the rooms could use a little work. One of our lamps didn't work and neither did the tv. There were also stains on the sheets and shower curtain. Overall, this is a good place whether you're just having dinner or visiting from out of town. I will be going back to the restaurant, for sure. Horrible service!!! Made reservations for 12:30 on a Saturday. Got there a few minutes early and heard them say quietly to each other that people were still sitting at our table. So we had to wait a few minutes to be seated, not the end of the world. Our sever came right away and was very nice, took our drink order, served our drinks and took our food order. So far so good. Then we waited. She never came back. We got our appetizers. Soup was barely warm and nachos were the same. The cheese on the nachos had no taste and you could tell it was under a heat light for a while. We waited for about twenty more minutes for our food and it too was barely warm. It was so obvious that it was under a heat lamp for a while. The whole time we were there, no one ever checked on us and asked us how we were doing or how our food was. About twenty more minutes after eating our food, a manager came, when we asked where our server is, he said "she's around". Very strange. We told him that the food was barley warm and they did not charge us for it. Very disappointed. Hope they recognize where they need to improve. read more

The fish and chips was outstanding (especially the double portion for $2 more), the fish was fresh delicious and perfectly prepared with very crisp beer batter and the fries were some of the best. My wife had the Bangers and mash which was also excellent. They had a great beer selection as well and the service (order at the bar) was quick and attentive. Took my parents for their anniversary dinner. Luckily, Tuesday is buy one dinner/get one free night. Even with a $25 dinner taken off the tab it was $100 for 3-people. However, the service was very good and the food was delish. My parents both got the twin filet medallions and said they were cooked perfectly. Choosing the venue for your wedding ceremony and reception is a big deal. We had never been to the General Sutter Inn, but found great reviews for it online and decided to visit for dinner one night to check things out before we booked a meeting with the site coordinator. After tasting the food and seeing the ballroom, we knew that it would be a great place for us. We thought it might be out of our budget, but after sitting down with Jeff Merk, the events coordinator, we realized we could have a unique, customized event for less than we expected. From our first meeting, Jeff was instrumental in helping things run smoothly for us. He was happy to answer all of our questions and meet with us several times to go over our plans. We had 90 out-of-town guests invited, so we rented the entire inn, and Jeff gave recommendations for other local inns as well. When the day finally came, everything was beyond our expectations. The ballroom was stunning, the food was amazing, the accommodations were comfortable, and Jeff and his team helped the event flow seamlessly from ceremony to reception. Multiple times throughout the night, Jeff made time to check in with us and make sure we had absolutely everything we needed. At the end of the night he assured us that our rowdy friends were welcome to continue to enjoy the inn upstairs - after all, our party were the only guests. He made us feel like we were at home, and we did. It's been a month since we said "I do", and we're still getting messages from guests lettings us know how good the food was and how much they enjoyed themselves. The Crispy Salmon was awesome, the twin beef tenderloins melted in your month, and we loved the Shrimp Tortillini. The mashed potatoes with shallot and crab was wonderful. I tried to get this recipe but no such luck. Prices ranged to reasonable to higher priced items and was worth it. Nice atmosphere. Need reservations. We had a wonderful weekend stay here in a room with a queen bed. Had stayed here before by myself years ago. The addition of an authentic British pub (Bulls Head) adjoining the Inn was a great idea--the pub was packed on Fri nite, so we sat in the bar area of the restaurant and were able to order off the pub menu there--food was great, service was great, and the wife and I were happy with everything (pub has 14 different beers on tap). The pub, BTW, in traditional Britishstyle, does not have table service--tables are first come-first served and self service.The Inn includes a continental breakfast in the morning (including Sunday)--the prices of a separate Sunday brunch starting at 11, tho, looked reasonable enough that we would have done that instead had we not departed earlier. This Inn has a lot of character due to its age (creaky floors, etc) --the hallway circuit breaker kicked once when we used an iron because several rooms were on the same 15A circuit, but that was no problem. Front desk staff couldn't have been nicer (April, particularly) One thing to consider is limited parking in the rear (6 spaces only) on the weekend--however, you can park at the school next door after school hours--street meters are 1 hour for a quarter. This town has a lot of uniqueness--the General Sutter Inn is the perfect place to stay and within walking distance of most places downtown. read more

We walked into the pub section but there was not enough seating for our party of 3 at one table. The bartender quickly offered to show us upstairs to the "formal sit-down" restaurant and up we went. The front desk attendant from the hotel greeted us warmly and ushered us into an old yet well-lit room that overlooked a lovely garden. The party at the next table received an order of fish and chips that was of Moby Dick proportions, and quickly prompted one in our party to try that dish. Another ordered the chicken cutlet sandwich while the third ordered a salad with grilled chicken. The food was prepared fresh and did take some time, but it was worth the wait. The fish plate, albeit a bit smaller, was none the less of epic proportion and cooked to perfection, accompanied with tartar sauce, ketchup and malt vinegar. He requested that the chips be crispy and they were crispy on the outside and soft inside....perfect. The sweet potato fries came out the same that accompanied the cutlet sandwich, much to the guests dismay, as she would have preferred hers less done. But honestly, they were delicious. The salad was nicely done, fresh and well-dressed, but they forgot to add the chicken. When they discovered their mistake, they were not only apologetic, but asked if I still wanted it. When I said yes (and I was glad I did-it was tender, juicy and tasty), they again apologized, said it was being prepared and of course they would not charge me for it.
