If you're looking for a cool place to eat in Downtown Gainesville I would recommend Liquid Ginger. We went on a weekday night and we were the only people in the restaurant. The atmosphere is really chill and they have a pretty big menu with a lot of different options. I got the Stir-Fry Udon Noodles with Chicken and it was very tasty! The noodles were very chewy and the portion size was huge, and it was only $11, which is a super good deal for the quantity and quality. The only negative I have to say was the service was very very slow. We were literally the only people in the restaurant and it took a really long time to get service, and the staff was just standing and talking. Other than that it was a great experience! read more

Starting off the service was sub par. All of our plates were left on the table for the entirety of our dinner. The table it's self was very dirty. Given the location, this place is usually packed, despite the fact that it also usually smells weird (not quite fishy and not entirely old dishwater, either way not a good sign) and I have given it multiple chances. The sushi is not necessarily bad but not what I want from raw fish. The udon lunch is tasty and a great price. My absolute favorite thing here is the ginger dressing (yes I liked it so much I asked and they do indeed sell it by the bottle!) One of my favorite places to get sushi around Gainesville. The rolls are very reasonably priced. The salmon roll I got was around $4.50 and I also got the pad thai which wAs $12 They do have pricier steak options but for the most part the menu is very conservative compared to other restaurants downtown which makes it popular with college aged students. I really enjoy the atmosphere and the prices are super reasonable. I would love to come back here and celebrate my birthday and this would definitely be a great place to celebrate graduations also! read more

Great location in the Sun Center. It can be a parking nightmare if you come here during busy downtown hours. But, if you get here for an early dinner, the parking is free at the Sun Center and there are actually spaces. I love the decor and interior, even the lobby area is great with plenty of seating. If you dine here on a Friday or Saturday night, they will look at you crazy if you do not have a reservation. We did not, and it was quite humorous the attitude we received, especially after trying the food. They have a large drink menu and a bartender, many customers were ordering drinks. I believe that there is a happy hour that we were there for, but our server never told us about it or the specials. As other reviews fail to mention, the meals here are like an over sized Bento box. So, instead of a Bento Box, it is plates arranged on a large wooden tray (see photo). There are also many appetizers to choose from for a separate fee. All entrees include your choice of soup (choices were miso or tofu spinach), your choice of salad dressing (choices were ginger or sesame), then a large dinging tray divided into separate plates, and then finished with your choice of ice cream flavor (red bean, green tea, chocolate mint). All of this comes included in the entree price. The large dining tray divided into separate plates contains; a rice ball, four veggies of Chef's choice (mine was dry-fried string beans, steamed broccoli, cold sesame noodles, and sweet chopped cucumber pickles), the the actual entree dish in the center. I had the Lime Tilapia, which was fried fish (katsu style) with a side of lime sauce to dip it in. Their version of Bang Bang Shrimp was the same shrimp used in Sweet and Sour style shrimp covered in sweet chili mayo. The Spicy Chicken in Bean Sauce was all white meat chicken covered in bean sauce from a jar with bell peppers. This restaurant has so much potential, but the entrees are low quality. It is like if you took a serving tray and put a bunch of pretty ceramic dishes on it, then filled those dishes with Chinese take-out items. All of the food just had that fresh-off-the-buffet taste, glistening in cornstarch sauce. The price must be tripled because of all of the dishes they have to clean and the high rent. Prices range from $15 to $33 for a large amount of food, but a buffet tastes the same and has a large amount of food as well. read more

Would give 0 stars if I could. Had a reservation for 8:15 PM and did not end up getting our entrée until 10:30 PM. We patiently waited for two hours and when we finally decided to say something, the manager seemed as though he couldn't care less and chalked it up to "our ticket being lost." They did give us 50% off of our meal but we took up a table for two hours and our waiter had to keep checking in on us, at that point it wasn't even worth half price and we got it to go. Don't go here if you're expecting good service. We were the only table there during prime dinner hours and when we arrived the host was less than welcoming. The servers and even the sushi chef were quite unfriendly and surly. Our server acted like he clearly didn't want to serve us, which was quite embarrassing considering the fact that we brought a potential job candidate there. When I asked the sushi chef if I could take a picture of the dish he was preparing, he first acted like he didn't understand what I was saying, then proceeded to swish me out the way with his hand, saying "move so service can get the food." First of all rude. And second, who was I permitting from serving food?? As I said, we were the ONLY table there for half of our meal. Furthermore, it took 20 minutes to get tea and a whole 58 minutes to recieve our entrees. There were only three other tables by this time. Three. So it should not have been this long. Pitiful. Now, even though the people were cold, the food was quite warm and delicious. If you do the Bento box which is only an extra five bucks, you get a tremendous amount of food. Soup, salad, and even ice cream (try the red bean...so good). Favorites were the vegetable dumplings, beef bulgogi and liquid ginger steak. Prices are decent and portions are huge. read more

For lunch, I'd give Liquid Ginger 4 stars, however for dinner, I'd give it 2. Liquid Ginger is one of my office's go-to places for lunch because of the quick service and the lunch special deals. Their lunch specials range from $8-11 and each meal comes with plenty of food. Lunch includes: soup, salad, rice, a spring roll, and orange slices. My favorite lunch item is their Pad Thai with beef and with all the food it comes with, I always have leftovers to take home. With this lunch special, I typically skip the soup, and choose the salad with either ginger dressing or the lime vinaigrette. The servers occasionally offer double salad since I don't order soup. Lunch at Liquid Ginger is definitely worth your money. Unfortunately, dinner at Liquid Ginger is another story. I wanted to get something different from what I typically order for lunch, and chose the beef flank clay pot. Although the portion was big, the dish was very bland. The broth barely had any flavor and the beef was really chewy. Service during dinner time was extremely slow and my party waited 20 minutes for our waiter to come back and take our order. Liquid Ginger is a fairly large restaurant with plenty of seating. They have a drink bar, sushi bar, booths, and tables. It can fill up, however we've never had to wait to be seated during lunch time. My boyfriend and I were recently road-tripping through Florida, and stopped in Gainesville at Liquid Ginger for lunch. Let me start by saying that we both have very large appetites- we eat a lot, and regularly get the 'wow, you're ordering a lot of food!' spiel when going to new places. We also have both worked in the service industry, so we have a first hand knowledge of what it is like to be a server. We were so hopeful about coming to Liquid Ginger, as we love Asian Fusion, but unfortunately, had a pretty terrible experience. Our server, named Alisa, was prompt at the start of the meal, but ended up ruining what otherwise might have been a nice meal. As I said, my boyfriend and I have large appetites. We ordered one appetizer and 3 lunch entrees between the two of us, and were told by the server, 'No, you shouldn't do that. It's too much food.' We were a little shocked and she continued, saying 'It will be a waste, you won't be able to finish it.' It wasn't just that she was telling us no, it was that her tone dripped with condescension. We were essentially shamed into dropping the appetizer and just getting the 3 entrees, and she said, 'okay, but that will still probably be too much.' Well, it wasn't. But she sure tried to make sure we knew how right she was, at each step along the way. The entrees come with a soup and salad, and even though we told her we only needed 2 soups and 2 salads, she dropped 3 soups and salads off with a smirk and told us 'well, you ordered three entrees, so I figured you wanted it' even though we told her we only needed two. When the entrees dropped, she didn't check back on us until the end, when we were already finished. She never checked on the food, never refilled our water, and we didn't see her until we were already done, at which point she said, 'see! You didn't need any extra food. It was too much!' It wasn't too much. So we ordered the appetizer we had wanted originally, waited a long time for it, and when it came, she dropped it on the table without making eye contact or saying a single word to us. I don't understand why she was so horribly rude to us. We were kind to her, patient, and as a server, it's usually better when someone orders more, because that means more money spent & a higher tip to you. So it is truly baffling to me why she was so condescending and rude to us. The two stars are for the food, which was good. The place was probably one of the worst sushi places I've gone to in the Gainesville area. My partner and I finished our errands in the area and were really hungry. We stopped in and got seated immediately. Our waitress immediately brought us water but never brought us silverware. We were going to add drink orders but we never got the chance to add those in. Everything was perfect no complaints we were actually blown away at how amazing everything was! My only complaint was the server, he was very rude and condescending, and we were not the only ones uncomfortable with him. We were seated outside and the two tables next to us were all complaining about how slow he was bringing things, would never come out to check on us, bring the check etc. However the 4th table on the patio had a different server and she was hustling doing a fantastic job so I guess it just depends on who you get. I've eaten at LG probably a dozen times, but have put off writing a review because I really want to give them a good rating. Ah well. . . First of all, I love being able to park in the Sun Center and walk to the restaurant. This is a huge plus in downtown Gainesville, and probably accounts for some of their business. But, as many other reviewers have noted, when you come for dinner, the service frankly sucks. If it had been once or twice, I'd think "oh, a bad night," or "a server problem." But no. Consistently it takes forever to have a server come by, forever-plus to get your drinks, and heaven help you if you aren't ready to order when they do come, because it will be an eternity before anyone comes back. Don't even ask me about how long it takes for food to arrive - I've waited as long as an hour, in an almost empty restaurant. This is a management problem, not a server issue. As to the food, it struggles to make "average." Particularly in Asian fusion food, I look for complex and significant flavors, which I have never found at LG. Case in point: I recently asked for my coconut curry to be Hot, Very Spicy I emphasized. What came out would barely make a Medium at another restaurant. When I asked the server, she said, "that's how we make it here." Ummm. Okay. As others have said, the portions are on the small side, which is probably okay if you're a senior citizen like me but what about a college student? Lunch tends to be a better bet, in large part because they're serving (duh) a lunch crowd and need to move people through more quickly. The prices, especially for their sushi specials are a real draw - you can have lunch of sushi and tea for about $16 exclusive of tip. So - lunch at LG anyone? read more
