This place has amazing food all around! We had their house Sake, Saigon Dumplings, Ginger salad, Pad Thai, and Liquid Ginger roll. Everything was perfect no complaints we were actually blown away at how amazing everything was! My only complaint was the server, he was very rude and condescending, and we were not the only ones uncomfortable with him. We were seated outside and the two tables next to us were all complaining about how slow he was bringing things, would never come out to check on us, bring the check etc. However the 4th table on the patio had a different server and she was hustling doing a fantastic job so I guess it just depends on who you get. I've eaten at LG probably a dozen times, but have put off writing a review because I really want to give them a good rating. Ah well. . . First of all, I love being able to park in the Sun Center and walk to the restaurant. This is a huge plus in downtown Gainesville, and probably accounts for some of their business. But, as many other reviewers have noted, when you come for dinner, the service frankly sucks. If it had been once or twice, I'd think "oh, a bad night," or "a server problem." But no. Consistently it takes forever to have a server come by, forever-plus to get your drinks, and heaven help you if you aren't ready to order when they do come, because it will be an eternity before anyone comes back. Don't even ask me about how long it takes for food to arrive - I've waited as long as an hour, in an almost empty restaurant. This is a management problem, not a server issue. As to the food, it struggles to make "average." Particularly in Asian fusion food, I look for complex and significant flavors, which I have never found at LG. Case in point: I recently asked for my coconut curry to be Hot, Very Spicy I emphasized. What came out would barely make a Medium at another restaurant. When I asked the server, she said, "that's how we make it here." Ummm. Okay. As others have said, the portions are on the small side, which is probably okay if you're a senior citizen like me but what about a college student? Lunch tends to be a better bet, in large part because they're serving (duh) a lunch crowd and need to move people through more quickly. This was a very disappointing experience... Came here with 4 friends for dinner on a Thursday and they were pretty empty inside. Our waiter was nice but seemed uneducated about the menu (didn't know what wine we were ordering). I shared the creamy shrimp bento box and chicken pad Thai bento box with a friend. The soup was good, salad was incredibly overdressed to the point that dressing was just dripping all over the place every time I took a bite. We watched our drinks sit up at the counter for 5-10 minutes before our server brought them to the table. The bento boxes were cool with the little sides but the meals were pretty unappealing. The creamy shrimp had soooo much breading and was so crispy that it was hard to even bite through and find the shrimp inside. The pad Thai didn't taste very authentic which would be ok but the flavors were still not very good. One of the girls in our group ordered 1 sushi roll instead of a bento box and even though it didn't seem like there were many other sushi orders it took an extra 5 minutes after the rest of us got our food. Liquid Ginger is located in the historic downtown area of Gainesville with areas to walk after if you're looking for nightlife. Parking was difficult even during the week. I had to park in a garage and walk, as there wasn't any nearby street parking. I didn't mind the walk though, as there were some beautiful historic buildings along my route. The price and quality of the food were both excellent. I'll rate them a 3 out of 5 stars on their selection of whiskey. I sat at the bar, and the service was excellent. The experience I had at the restaurant was not the best. The service is slow and not that great. The food isn't the best either, I ordered a beef flank clay pot but it's a little too salty. The description and picture of the food does not match at all, except the ingredients. The owner doesn't have that good of a attitude either. I came here with my family on Christmas Day after driving around Gainesville looking for a place that was open. Even though I have lived in Gainesville before (during my undergrad days), I had never been to Liquid Ginger. There were plenty of tables open, probably only two or three other small groups eating, when we came in. We were seated quickly and water was brought out right away. Our waitress was nice; she answered our questions and took our orders in a timely manner. The decorations were trendy and not tacky. Originally, I wanted to get sushi, but after looking at the quality of the fish, my mom didn't think it looked super fresh. I mean, we did show up the evening of Christmas, so maybe it's not usually like that. Anyway, I ordered the pad thai with beef and I enjoyed it. The pad thai was slightly spicier than most places, but I liked it like that, since most pad thai is extremely sweet. There was a lot of food on my plate. I did think it was strange, though, that it came with a tiny dish of rice, but everyone's dish did, so I guess that's just how they do things there. I think my brother ended up eating my rice because he didn't have enough, so it worked out anyway. Dishes my other family members ordered included thai red curry, coconut curry chicken, some dish with scallions and beef and ginger, and some beef and veggie stuff in a clay pot. The red curry was spicy and tasty, but the other dishes were unremarkable, especially the clay pot dish. My husband didn't finish the clay pot dish because it wasn't that great, so we took some of it home. When I decided to eat it the next day, I had to put a good amount of sriracha on it to give it some more flavor. We arrived waited 15 minutes to get waters; waited another 15 for our drink orders and so we decided to order our food at the same time. It took forever to get refills and our food. Worst restaurant customer service I've ever received in my life. I asked for a replacement for an allergy I have (avocado to cucumber) and I was told at first that I'd be up-charged which I didn't mind but within two seconds, I was told it wasn't allowed. I said I have an allergy and the waiter told me "it's not our problem." Then when I asked for a manager he responded and said "I'm basically the manager" and he walked away and said he didn't want to wait our table anymore. Apparently it wasn't his choice because he slammed our order on the table disrespectfully and gave us tension the entire time. We went in for dinner before a play at the Hippodrome, which was very convenient. Basically, the overall experience matched the general tenor of other reviews: great happy hour and good food, but the service is a little iffy, and definitely VERY slow. Happy hour: $5 for any wine by the glass and any of their craft cocktails. At many places happy hour is only a few of the cocktails and the house wine, so the happy hour gets 5 stars. The cocktails were good and interesting. There is a whole section for vegetarian options, so if you have a vegetarian in your group, they won't be left out. We got the veggie pad thai and the red coconut curry, both of which were quite good. As mentioned by another reviewer, you can pay $5 more for a bento upgrade for dinner, which gives you soup, a salad, and ice cream. It was totally worth it -- we did it just for one entree, and one of us had the soup, the other had the salad, and we shared the ice cream. Service: It was amazingly slow. I think there were only two or three other tables in the restaurant, but it still took more than 5-10 minutes after we were seated for someone to come to ask about a drink order. Our server was reluctant to tell us about the happy hour, even after we asked. He also disappeared for long spans of time. A good option for Asian fare in downtown Gainesville. I've been here a few times and this place has been consistently good. The bento box meals are a great option and they come with lots of extras including the most delicious miso (possibly ever)! During my most recent trip I sampled a few of the sushi rolls. I was impressed both with the rice/fish ratio (not a ton of rice!) and the quality of ingredients. I particularly enjoyed the special "Out of Control Roll" which is not on the regular menu. We order soups, starter and main dishes: -soup: Miso soup and spicy sour Thai soup. Miso was okay (similar to everywhere); the spicy sour one had an unexpected taste, which I liked it. -starter: eggplant garlic: grilled eggplant with onion and sauce. it was tasty and unique. A little greasy though. -We ordered "liquid ginger rib-eye" and "basil beef". Rib-eye was perfect with their unique sauce (5 stars). Basil beef was quite mediocre, and greasy (3 stars). The only reason I like this place is for the classy ambiance and the location. I've ordered their bento box specials for their dinners and it is a decent deal. There is so many vegetables in the dish and barely any meat. I was so hungry afterwards just because the vegetables do not fill me up at all. The curry was mediocre in my opinion. It was not that flavorful and I felt that the chefs did not know how to cook yellow curry that well. In terms of service, I did not get the best impression. I came one evening for an event was being held at the venue and some of the waiters were very rude. They walked right across the presenters during the programmed event, and walked in interrupting while someone was giving a speech. If they did so in a polite tasteful manner I would not have minded, but one of the waiters came in yelling about who ordered what and did not care about the event that they had agreed to host. If you are thinking about hosting an event here, I would reconsider because the service will not be too accommodating. The ambiance on the other is nice and classy. It is decorated very nicely and is perfect for a lovely evening for a date for two. They also have outside seating, which is nice for the downtown nighttime setting. They sat us at a table on the covered potion of the patio, and the tables and black chairs were all soaking wet. We stood and waited while our server went to get towels to dry everything off, but he came back with a few white linens and told us to just sit on them. We did. His service from then on was friendly and attentive, though when we had waited for about 30 minutes after we ordered, it started to get very cold outside. We asked to move to an inside table, and they accommodated. It was about 25 minutes later when our food finally arrived at the table. It was DELICIOUS! Wonderful food! Great atmosphere! I have eaten here many times and brought many people to eat here. The steaks are fantastic, grilled fish is on point and sushi top notch. A little tricky to find for some, but parking is easy and free in the Sun Center parking lot. The menu has a wide selection to satisfy whoever you have as a guest. They have a full bar with house concoctions. They always pay very close attention to detail on their presentation of food. However, if there is anything that I would go back for here at liquid ginger, it would be the Prime Rib and its lunch specials! Their Prime Rib is about $17-18 and is a great size with various dipping sauces and small sides (kind of set up like Korean sides). Every time my boyfriend and I eat here, he always has the prime rib and is never disappointed. It is a nice fat piece of meat that is always cooked to your liking and keeps you full and satisfied. I have had various rolls and entrees here besides the prime rib and they were just OK, the ambiance definitely made the dining experience better. But! I would definitely return for their lunch specials. Their lunch specials range from $8-12 and you are given a nice hefty portion. You can order a rice dish, noodle dish, full on entrée, and it really is a great price for the portion they give you. The lunch special also comes with soup or salad and a little spring roll to go with your meal. You can't beat the price! Overall, great location with some high points here and there.
