Ordered General Tsao chicken and was pleasantly surprised with the variety of veggies. Baby carrots, peanuts etc it tasted good. Not like some places that just fry everything and douse in sugar, this food had spice and subtle flavors that weren't overpowered by sugary fillers. C-Star is tucked away in a lot that shares parking with dollar general. It's bigger than it looks from the outside and the owners really were festive during the holiday season. I was helped by a local woman who could not answer any of my questions about the menu. I usually ask simple questions like "what kind of veggies are in the meal or how spicy is it?" But this woman may have not familiarized herself with the menu to the point of effectively answering a customers questions. One thing that I found disgusting, was the woman employee did not wash her hands after mopping the floor. She even moved the rubber mat below the soda fountain and just went right back behind the counter handling customers food without washing her hands luckily my food was already packaged when it came out the kitchen. Everyone else's food was placed in a plastic bag for pick up. However my food was only in a paper bag. Not sure as to why, it makes little difference but a lack of continuity in the handling of customers orders always makes an inquisitive mind wonder why. I wasn't dining in so I didn't tip, maybe that's why my food wasn't packaged in a plastic bag? Either way, it makes little difference but is worth mentioning. Overall the place is worth a try. I had one of the worst experiences I have ever had at this restaurant. I was picking up food for my client and had the entire order written clearly on a sticky note so there would not be any confusion. I was reading directly from the note while ordering. When I said, "vegetable fried rice," the employee put noodles instead. I immediately corrected her and explained that it was supposed to be vegetable fried rice, not noodles. She insisted the noodles were correct. I know the difference between rice and noodles. Before leaving, I even asked the cashier to open the container because I felt the order was wrong. I explained again that it was supposed to be vegetable fried rice, with an egg roll and General Tso's chicken. Since I do not personally eat there, I relied completely on the written order from my client. When I returned to my client, they informed me the chicken was not even General Tso's chicken. I went back to the restaurant to have the mistakes corrected, and the manager's behavior was completely unacceptable. Instead of calmly fixing the order, she became rude, nasty, and disrespectful. She argued with me in front of other customers and claimed they gave me exactly what I ordered, even after I showed her the written sticky note. She told me she was not going to serve me anymore and even threatened to call the police simply because I wanted the correct food for my client. Eventually, she refunded my money, but when I explained I still needed the correct order, she loudly argued with me in front of everyone in the restaurant. After remaking the food, they STILL forgot the egg roll. On top of that, when I handed her the money, she aggressively snatched it from my hand. That level of disrespect from a manager is unbelievable. I have never felt so embarrassed and mistreated in a restaurant. I was not rude to anyone. I was simply trying to correct an order that was made incorrectly multiple times. No customer should ever be treated the way I was treated. Because of this experience, I will never return to this restaurant again, and I would not recommend it to anyone. Customer service and professionalism clearly do not matter here! read more

They have lunch specials $7.99 for a drink and combo (no egg roll),pretty solid portion of food for cheap as you can tell from the pics, I got general Taos chicken and pork fried rice. Can't lie it was mildly disappointing but that's only because I'm a low quality Chinese connoisseur. Wok n roll off 34th is better BUT is more expensive so pick ur poison. I will be going back here for sure. My friends sesame chicken report: Classic sesame!! Good flavor and bite. Decent portions for lunch combo. Overall 8.5/10. I was looking for a quick takeout dinner with no huge expectations. Reading previous reviews I didn't have my hopes up, but it was just across from the hotel we were at. I was driving on 13th St. looking for something for lunch. I pulled up to a Thai place, where I've ordered carry-out from before. There were no cars in the parking lot on a Friday at lunch time. It seemed sketch, so I left. I went to a gyro place, where I've eaten before and it was good, but the lines were so long, so I left. Then I saw this place and the parking lot was pretty full. I decided to give them a try. The employees were nice. The food prices were reasonable, around $10. I got two meats and two sides. They had meals as cheap as 7.50. They include a free drink. The food is good, but I've had better Chinese food. I'm happy with my meal, though. It had a decent sized dining room, nothing special, but it's nice to be able to have a choice of sitting in a dining room setting vs 3-4 tables in a strip mall restaurant. We went expecting the worst because, let's be real, Americanized Chinese little restaurants don't have the best reputation, but were surprised by the quality of the food. The restaurant was very clean, and service was good. Their menu is quite large, so you have plenty of options. We ordered the pork lo mein, Ggeneral Tso's chicken and sweet and sour chicken. They came with eggrolls and fried rice, a pretty good deal. The food was all tasty, except the sweet and sour chicken. That was bland, and you had to fully cover it in sauce to be able to taste anything. The portions were big, and we took home some leftovers. If you are looking for a quick bite of Chinese food (although still very Americanized!), consider this place. For what you pay for, you can't ask for more. read more

We started picking up takeout orders about 10 months ago. At first everything was great, the orders were correct, everything was hot and very good. About 3 months ago things started going downhill. We ordered and when I got home we discovered items were not put in the bags. Things like the white rice and the sweet and sour sauce for the egg rolls/fried wontons would be missing. It wasn't every time we ordered, but was becoming too often, about every other order something was missing. The last time we ordered it was 4 combination meals, 2 soups, large order of Mongolian Beef with white rice and extra shrimp eggs rolls, they shorted us the sweet and sour sauce for the egg rolls and the white rice. They staple shut the tops of the bags, so the orders don't get cold, so it's a pain to rip open the bags, take out all the food and verify it's all there, besides they don't really have the counter space to do that. I guess if things don't improve, I'll be looking for a new place. Too bad, the food is good, but not paying for items we don't get, bottom line. read more

The way I would describe China Star is "mall chinese food". It's the fast food version of chinese - the take out specials that we are all familiar with. With that I will say, it's really good for being fast food! The restaurant was clean and the service was good. I got the 1 meat with 2 sides for around $5.50. Perhaps it's the run down building that always made me overlook this place...Maybe it's the fact that its parking lot is always seemingly empty, except for the few cars that have overflowed from the mega popular Mexican restaurant located right next to it. Either way, I did not expect myself to be ordering dinner here after walking away from a forty five minute wait at La Tienda. Inside, my expectations weren't high. Sticky tables stood in an empty room and a strong fried foods smell greeted me at the door. However, my opinion completely changed after my experience here. First off, the prices are CHEAP. Some items are cheaper than Panda Express. They offer roast pork fried rice, a heaping portion of a selected meat, and an egg roll for $7. A quart of soup is around $3. China Star packs your containers FULL with what you order. The $7 combo served me for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Not to mention, the cute little plastic serving dish with lid they provide is perfect for repurposing as Tupperware. Secondly, the food is pretty good. (I love Americanized Chinese food, so I might be a bit biased) I definitely recommend the bourbon chicken as the honey chicken was a bit sweet for me. The egg roll was super delicious and the dumpling appetizer looks amazing. Thirdly, our order was ready in five minutes. We left our friends at La Tienda, ordered at China King, ate our food, and went back to La Tienda in the time that our friends finally received their Mexican food. Do not judge a book by its cover! If I am being honest, I doubted this place for the first year I lived in Gainesville. One day for lunch, one of my colleagues took me to lunch here and I was very pleasantly surprised. FOOD (4.5/5): This is not high-class Chinese food, but it is very good Chinese fast food. They include some options that are traditional and not what you would expect in a mall. For example, one of the best side items they offer is scrambled eggs with tomatoes/chives. On Saturday, they offer a traditional beef noodle soup that my Chinese friends rave about. I purchased this meal from China Star on NW 13th Street on October 25th, 2019. Initially I purchased from the lunch line and ordered an additional (6) chicken wings with shrimp fried rice. Today, 10/26/2019, is when I decided to eat my leftover, I ate several bites before tasting an hard, crunchy and awful smell. I removed what it appeared to be feces! It smeared on the paper towel when I wiped my hand. I am ABSOLUTELY disgusted!! I can tell that this poop was dry and mixed in with the rice! How does supposedly fresh cooked rice have dry poop in it?! I really loved this Chinese Restaurant but I will never return and I am highly disappointed. China Star is absolutely my favorite place to get Chinese takeout in Gainesville, partially due to it's proximity to my home, but also primarily due to the quality of food I have gotten. Some of my personal favorite menu items are the Mongolian beef, Szechuan pork, fried cheese wontons, and wonton soup! Their takeout lunch combo prices are great and you get a lot of food. They also have a mall style line of hot food during lunch hours, which is pretty great if you are short on time. (The lo mein and burbon chicken are good choices). However if you have the time I recommend getting fresh takeout instead as that is where China Star really shines in my eyes! read more

We order take out from here once a week. My husband and I are huge fans of the house fried rice and the home style tofu with broccoli. Cooked to perfection every time. I called to place an order and I am about half a mile distance from the restaurant, they are handing menus that say $12 min delivery my order was over $13.50, saying they charge a 2 dollar service fee which is not listed on the flyer, I asked if they would honor their flyer and was met with a no, stating the flyer is old. I picked up this flyer yesterday while dining in! Mind you they Also add a 75cent charge for credit which isn't legal. First I ordered the small sweet-and-sour shrimp and they gave me up for the large price then when I received it through delivery it was just normal fried shrimp which I've never seen before breaded with sweet-and-sour sauce that was more towards a liquid next I got a seafood delight platter that came with lobster shrimp and scallops. It's says that it's Fresh but I promise that the whole platter was full with old slimey liquid to the top. I can understand as a walk in establishment it can be a good cheap option.
