I always thoroughly enjoy myself when I stop by Liquid Ginger. All the meals I've had were tasy and presented well. Fish is always a safe bet here, I'm not sure if it's their supplier or just that they prepare fish really well or what, but I've never been dissapointed with a fish dish. It took me a while to like this place, but once I nailed my order I've continued to come back. My favorite things on the menu are the pad Thai and the curry chicken, but the only way I like them is when I specify I want them spicy. The spice really makes the difference. I'm not crazy about their dumplings or pork buns, as they are pretty average. The sushi is also average in my opinion. I give LJ 4 stars, for definitely above average. (I reserve 5 stars for the things that make me cry with happiness for having partaken!) I really love that everything is based on a pseudo-bento box ideal. Ok, it's not really a bento box... but you get little tastings of sides and dessert with a main dish, which - since I also love tapas - is a great style for me. This allows you to have many different favors without ridiculously blowing your budget (or calorie intake!). Overall, it's slightly pricier than I'd like, but not more so than I expect, if that makes any sense. Seems like average dinners are in the $18-22 range or so. Starters are relatively cheap, and I've made dinner out of a few starters with friends and some fruit tea. Overall, definitely a place to try. I used to come here all the time since they had teas that I liked the no one else in Gainesville had. I mix the puerh and crysanthymum for something earthy and sweet. There are some items on the tasting menu that are really good such as the steak kew and soft shell crab. I am a fan of all the fish dishes and chicken dishes. I have not gone wrong with a fish or chicken dish. I havent tried the other ones since I always go tried and true. The sweet chili sauce is really good...and Love the garlic cold noodles. I am a HUGE lover of garlic. and by that I mean I love it roasted and eaten just like that, raw as the major ingredient in my salad dressing, or just plain stirfry with garlic and veggies. so those garlic cold noodles are gratifying. If you are on a date then I would stay clear of those. Get the coconut sauced steamed veggies as a side- those are yummy too. I've have a graduation dinner there and no complaints. A little pricey, but you are downtown and there are lots of food to go around. Each meal comes with a ginger salad, main course with side dishes, rice, and dessert. I recommend the red bean or green tea icecream. If you are having a larger party, there is a downstairs area that is semi-private. I personally like it down there since you can look outside and it feels more VIP-ish. read more

Great location and nice ambiance. Its not directly on the road around downtown. So I had not tried this for a long time. The inside location helps because it keeps you away from a bunch of homeless people which are increasing day by day in downtown Gainesville. Had some chicken and shrimp with peanut curry on valentines day 2016. It was the only place in downtown which did not have 1 hour waiting that day. No problems with service. The food was ok. Please be careful with the pan-seared escolar. It was a delicious dish, but I ended up with a waxy diarrhea after eating it. I then found out that escolar is known to cause this (keriorrhea) due to the natural indigestible and unabsorbable wax esters in the fish. You can Google it or search on Pubmed. While the fish is not deemed toxic or lethal when prepared appropriately, I do wish that I was told about the keriorrhea side effect before I decided to try this fish out... read more

My son and I went there last night - we sat at the bar. The bartender was great. The food was really terrible except the salad. They rushed out the salad and soup and tried to serve it to the patrons next to us. The soup was cold. It took another 10 minutes for the edemame. - which once again they tried to give to our neighbor patrons. Dinner arrived late - I had gotten tHe overcooked and hard shrimp - and as the broccoli which both were cold. Cold. I asked the bartender to at least go back and put it in a microwave or a quick toss in a hot wok - he did - it came back the sane. I stopped trying. Not his fault. The worst part was the word F___. that was scratched in big letters on the inside of the bathroom door at eye level. These owners have stopped caring but still want your money. So yummy! I always have such a hard time deciding what I want, because everything is so good. I always end up getting the same thing, which is the spicy soy chicken. It was my first time there and the food was really good and flavorful. A friend and I were looking for a new place to eat on a Sunday evening and stumbled upon it when going through the sun center. We decided to take a at the menu before making our decision and the server was very helpful as he explained the bento option of the menu. We started off with some vegitarian spring rolls. They were fresh, steamy, cripsy and delicious. Since we both decided on the Bento Box option we started off with the Miso Soup. The soup was good, they added mushrooms to make it a little heartier, which was appetizing. After the soup we had the salad. The ginger dressing was awesome. I had the coconut curry chicken for the main course and it was sooooo flavorful. I really liked it. The veggies in it were fresh. My friend had the spicy ginger chicken and enjoyed it as well. We hardly spoke during our main course because we were so involved with eating all the food. The portions were pretty big and we ate it all. The dessert was great, we had ice cream. (ice cream is the only dessert option) They have a large tea menu. We ended our meals with a pot of green tea and honey.It was the perfect ending to a fabulous meal. The dinnerware was cool. The bento boxes were pretty and the tea pot and warmer were a nice touch. The service was fine. Not as bad as I've read in these reviews. Our server was knowledeable of the menu. He came to our table frequently. Another server came by to give us some water when he saw my friend was low. So the service was pretty good. Decided to celebrate my birthday at liquid ginger with about 15 friends. Great location right in downtown, so it was a nice eat before we went out that night to celebrate some more. The biggest complaint I would have is the wait and staff. I made a reservation a week in advance for 15 people at 7:30. We weren't seated until 8:30 and dinner took close to 3 hours, despite the restaurant being empty. VERY VERY slow service. I'd like to give them the benefit of the doubt that they were understaffed. Food was average. Two of the steaks at the table were overcooked. We asked for medium-rare and two came out well-done. Fortunately my steak was okay. There is a coupon for $5 off $25 on the Gator Green books if you're looking for ways to cut back costs #brokestudentlife. I would caution people against eating here. Numerous people have had their car towed from the Sun Center where Liquid Ginger is located, based on false claims that they left the premises. They employ someone in the parking lot to hide around the corner and call tow trucks down the street while you are in the restaurant! WUFT has a good story about this. read more

This place came with a lot of strong recommendations from friends, but it really fell short. Based on other reviews, it seems like Liquid Ginger was once a hopping, trendy, and tasteful spot to eat. That is definitely not the case anymore. I can't even get to the food without discussing how poorly this restaurant is managed. It is clearly understaffed, as evidenced by a Friday night, in which the hostess is forced to bus tables, stock the bar, make drinks, and seat guests. There were numerous tables that were left dirty (ie, plates, drinks on the tables) for the entire 90 minutes we were there. They seemed to only clean the tables as needed. Did I say that I was there for 90 minutes? Yup - because it took over 60 minutes to get our entrees. The waitstaff is friendly, and definitely doing their best, but they are just undermanned. It's not fair to blame them. The food itself is not redeeming. It's basically like a local version of P.F. Chang's, but I'd prefer P.F. Chang's. We had the fried oysters ($10), which were underwhelming. The recommendation was for the calimari, but that seemed such a generic choice. Korean-style rib eye ($16) was a sizable portion, but the sauce was only okay. The shrimp and scallop shitaake ($15) was drowning in the sauce. The red bean ice cream was not bad, but I'm sure a nice novelty for most people. Basically, go somewhere else in GNV to get your Asian eat on. I'm pretty mad that this spot only has 3 1/2 stars. You can always count on Liquid Ginger to deliver a good hearty and well priced lunch special, pretty quickly and pretty tasty. I often get the eggplant or Pad Thai. I know it's just a small detail, but the salad with ginger dressing is one of the biggest things I look forward to. Their salad dressing is unparalleled. It can be hectic during the lunch hour but I tend to go a little bit after the lunch hour and it's always fine. The furniture could use upgrading but it's not so uncomfortable that I would stop going there. Their tea service is a nice added touch if you're looking to spend some time there talking for a business meeting or having a romantic date. And you just can't beat the price for what you get. Decided to try some sushi when I was in town on business. This place was recommended, and I have to say I really enjoyed dining here. The food is delicious and their presentation is gorgeous. The decor of the place is very clean and relaxing. And the servers are pleasant, not super friendly. They have very reasonable lunch specials that come with miso soup and a house salad. This is one of the better restaurants in Gainesville! They have great vegan and gluten-free options but I'm definitely partial to the red curry tofu. If you get an entree, a salad, soup, and dessert are also included. The tasting and tea menu are great as well!! Service is superb...never a bad experience.
