This is such a great ideaaaa, if I could give this place 10 stars I would! So my girlfriend and I wanted to plan a Galentine's Day outing and decided on this. We booked our session nearly a month in advance and when we reserved our spot, our confirmation said it was only "held" and we would receive a true confirmation text 48-hours within our reservation. I thought that was odd as their website/booking says if you book within 48hours of your requested session, you could assume that your booking was confirmed. Odd but anyway..... We received all confirmations, arrived on time and was seated about 15-minutes after our requested time. At that point we are introduced to our individual girl who walked us through our appointment; showing how she mixes our shade, other options and products we can customize or purchase. It really was a fast, but fierce time! We left with lip liners, lipsticks and a lip mask, and walked across the street KNOWING it was just a short amount of time until we put this idea back on the calendar! Out of all of the DIY things the girls are doing in 2026 and beyond, lipstick and Lip Lab are at the top for me! I visited Lip Lab with a group of 10 and we had a reservation, so we fully expected the experience to be structured and supported for a group our size. Overall, the experience was decent -- but it came with some major frustrations that were not the fault of our primary associate. Mya was excellent. She worked with our entire group and truly did the best she could under challenging circumstances. She's studying to be a makeup chemist, and her knowledge, patience, and passion showed throughout the process. Unfortunately, she was also doing everything on her own. There were four other employees working at the time, yet none assisted with our reserved group. Most of the other clients who arrived around our time were walk-ins, and those staff members chose to work with them instead. From our perspective, the lack of support for Mya felt less like an oversight and more like a decision not to help -- which made the experience confusing and unnecessarily slow. Things took an unexpected turn when a bird flew into the store and began pooping throughout the space. Incredibly, none of the other staff stepped in to handle the situation. One of my friends ended up getting the bird out of the building, while Mya and my friend cleaned up afterward. The lack of urgency, teamwork, or leadership during that moment was extremely disappointing. We tipped Mya well because she absolutely earned it, and we left with custom products and an unforgettable story. While the experience itself was creative and thorough, the hands-off approach from the rest of the staff and lack of coordination took away from what could have been a smooth, well-managed visit. 4 stars for the experience and Mya. 2 stars for overall staff support and teamwork. On a recent visit celebrating my bday, LipLab came thru. I'd heard great things and wanted to find out for myself. I enjoyed custom picking the colors, fragrance and finish of three products. Because it was a custom experience, I really wanted to make a nude specific to my skin tone. I made a lip gloss (sparkly nudish), a matte nude lipstick and a reddish tint balm. All looked great on me and felt silky. Our mixologist D'Angelo was awesome. His knowledge and experience guided us through our respective lip product making processes. I had 5 people in my party. I'd advise making a reservation if you have a party of 4 or more. So that your space is guaranteed. The store was pretty busy during our visit. Lip Lab , a unique space where you are a creator free to experiment with color to create a wearable expression of you. They have two convenient DC locations, the Wharf location and 14th street, NW. Their online booking is really fool proof and easy, just make sure you and your party is on time. They do allow a 15 min grace period. Since we had a group of 5 in our party, we had two wonderful staff members DeAngelo and Sasha helping us curate our lipsticks, glosses and balms. DeAngelo was a total vibe, his energy was very infectious and he was very knowledgeable about the product. The whole experience is really fun which consists of 5 parts(you choose your product, create your shade, select a case, add a scent and then you have it engraved with the name you choose for your shade. Such a fun, creative experience! One of my best friends surprised me with a quick visit from Florida, and since he's a well-known makeup artist, it was only right that he booked us a session at The Lip Lab at The Wharf to create custom lip balms and lipsticks. I booked an appointment for a mommy and daughter date months prior to our scheduled date. We arrived and for some reason the employee said our appointment was canceled in the system although I confirmed via text 2 days prior. After a short discussion with the manager. I was told to wait a few minutes and they will be able to accommodate us before a large party was coming in. After this mix up~ My daughter and I had the best experience. This is my first time here... an impromptu visit to Lip Lab, as we were leaving The Wharf. Unfortunately we have to book ahead of time and they were closing when we walked in. They weren't terribly friendly about relaying that to us, but we still walked around and looked at everything. Upon walking around we were able to see what options were available. The entire concept is fun: 1. Pick your product (lipstick, gloss, balm). 2. Find the perfect shade with the help of an expert. 3. Add a flavor (though were different ones to choose from) 4. We went to the location at 1614 14th Street NW. We arrived about 15 minutes early because they stressed do not be late, however it was 10 minutes before our experience started. Our mixologist was Keefy. We had a FABULOUS TIME! I'm not even going to take off for the wait. FIVE STARS!!! The manager also came over and helped us tweak our colors. Loved the collaboration. She said we were only the second customers to buy the blush. We had a fabulous time! I highly recommend. She took her time with us and made some of the most amazing matte lipsticks for us (3 different shades). We had the choice of matte, shiny, and lipgloss. What a fun experience! First off shoutout to Deangelo at Lip Lab - The Wharf, was an absolute pleasure to work with and if you can request to work with someone that's your person! Especially considering how hard it was to find a color for my friend she was making it challenging no jokes and more so it's because I feel she wasn't sure what she wanted and in the end bam she ended up with a color she was very excited about plus two other colors saved to her profile that she liked/would get in the future - kid you not one of the colors legit being her exact lip shade which we laughed very hard about during the process. As my friend noted I had my eye on the prize and really knew what I was looking for in a shade and wanted a gloss with a liner combo. By the second mix we had the perfect one. It really came together when combining it with the liner and how I personally use my liner by smudging it into my lip for a faded effect which Deangelo perfectly understood which helped with the process of making the color. Highly recommend going with friends, family, coworkers, it was a super fun time. Plus you can then get this color again since they save it to your profile which is super neat. It does take a bit of time so make sure you don't have something planned right after we were there a little over an hour for the two of us and had made reservations. I believe for the most part reservations are needed you might get lucky with a drop in but would recommend reservations. They do have a small retail section of items you can purchase as well. read more

I saw the Lip Lab experience through an Instagram reel. I immediately booked an appointment. The only thing is they are fully booked most weekends, I booked my appointment on January 14th and couldn't find an appointment opening on the weekend until March 17th. I almost forgot about the appointment, however Lip Lab sent several reminders via email and text. They only give you a 10-minutes grace period so keep that in mind when going to your appointment. We created three custom lipsticks with our host, Antwahn. He was so knowledgeable and helpful throughout the entire process. The first custom lipstick is $65 and anything after that is $40. If you want to repurchase your custom lipstick they give you a QR code. The entire experience was so much fun, they give you lip scrub to help get any product off to prepare you for trying on your custom lipstick. I created an orange red and brown nude. There are so beautiful even with the Matte finish they are super moisturizing. You customize the name of your lipstick, the finish, the scent, font letters and bottle color. They give you a cute make up bag to store your lipsticks and you have to wait 30 minutes to us it after creating it. This is a top tier experience to celebrate a birthday, engagement or date with your girlfriends. read more

A few weeks back my friends and I planned a girls night out at the popular Lip Lab at the Wharf DC Location. It took us literally 2 months to make this reservation and our day had finally arrived. ( Yes we booked this event 2 months in advanced which is the average time frame for groups, which is a little intense in my opinion) We were a group of 4. I am still in awe of my experience here. It truly was one for the books. Not only are you playing in paint but it is special, individual and specialized to you. Not only was I able to choose the type of lip paint from sheer to matte to silk to a gloss to the color which they mix based on what shades you like mixed with those that work best for your pigmentation. My mixologist Jasmine is one of a kind we played with different mixtures even allowing me to test the colors with the liners they sell to make the best choice. When you first arrive you are greeted and assigned your very own mixologist imagine having your very own bestie that's also a make up guru for your entire experience. You start with a wonderful lip scrub which is much needed for these harsh outdoor conditions followed by a lip conditioner. Once you choose which types of products you wish to create I chose two lipsticks you begin describing what look you are going for. I wanted an edgy red that wasn't clownish, didn't pull my orange undertones too much but was a statement while maintaining elegance and a summer pink than was both fun but subtle. We started with me choosing a base and Jasmine putting her expertise to seal the deal. I loved how she carefully measured everything and was extremely neat. We talked and chatted all the while laughing and adding a little more of this and a pinch of that to create the ultimate shades. In addition when you think you are done you get to choose a scent for each of your items and the color tube, name that is inscribed and the font. Lip Lab is really fun! I've been twice now and my experience has been similar both times. Both times I had to book my reservation way in advance (like months), but I definitely recommend checking for reservations the same day because there are cancellations, especially earlier in the morning. The setup is basically a U-shaped bar, it's very slick and chic inside. You can create any combination of custom lipstick, gloss, or balm. The pricing has gone up recently- a lipstick is $65, gloss is $55, and balm is $45. You can customize pretty much everything about your lip product, from the color, consistency, and scent of the product to the color of the tube. I love that you can also create a name for your product, which they'll engrave on the tube. Lip Lab keeps your combinations on record so that it's easy to re-order your color, which is so convenient. The biggest thing to know with Lip Lab is your experience is really dependent on the individual who is helping you. The first time I went, my friend and I had a great experience- it was a little tough for my associate to match the color I requested, but I still ended up with a product I loved. The second time, I went with family members. DeAngelo helped us and he was SO friendly and fun- he definitely got what we were looking for. The other associate assisting us could not match the color my family member was requesting, and then the manager came over and was really rude to our party- she kept saying my family member was describing the wrong color and really made her feel bad for telling the associate that unfortunately it was still not the color she was looking for. This is a pricey experience and my family member was being very reasonable- she was just communicating that the color wasn't right- so I don't understand why we were treated with such rudeness. However, I think the manager is an anomaly and generally I'd say as long as you aren't expecting a very close color match, you'll enjoy yourself. read more

One of the best "create your own" experiences that I have had here in D.C. I walked in early to my reservation at 5:30pm and the aura in the shop already had me excited for my experience. The ladies who work there were so welcoming and while I wait for the other guests, they checked in on me and got me started on deciding what type of product I wanted to create. When the other people in my party arrived, we got right to work and Jasmine, the employee who assisted us, was on top of it. She did such a good job explaining what was happening while also listening to our needs and desires for our products. She adapted to what our vision was so quick, I felt like she knew us before we got there. We all left with products we loved, and even extra because we just had such a good time. Fun experience to do with a friend - like getting a mani-pedi but it's expensive ($55-65 per lipstick) and the product sucks. It doesn't stay on and has an oily consistency. My friend also broke out with an awful rash on and around her lips before we even walked out. It looked like she was 4 and drank a bunch of kool-aid. Mine also burned from the prep products. My friend reserved a date for a group of us here. It was such a fun and different experience from start to finish. Initially I received an email from lip lab notifying me of the reservation and I thought that was a nice touch. It's located at the wharf so it has a lot of natural lighting which makes it more inviting. The ambiance is very chic and clean. You are basically assigned a worker who gives you a rundown of all the different options you can choose to create your own lip gloss, balm, or lipstick. You do not do any of the mixing, they do that but you select the color, texture (matte, satin, etc), and create your own name for it. You also choose a scent. I chose pomegranate; it smells amazing. Some of my friends chose sugar cookie, which is a nice option too. You watch the worker create the mixture and engrave the name on your new and exclusive product. I am EXTREMELY disappointed with this location. I booked this appt two months ago and was so excited to go because a friend had gifted me a certificate. Unfortunately, I was running late for my 5 pm appointment and saw online that there was an open slot for 5:30 which was perfect.
