Tried this restaurant for the first time for breakfast. Its a no frills diner style place. Seat yourself, ample room in seating area. Service is pretty quick. Great for kids. The food was mostly average and what you would expect from a diner. Portion sizes reasonable, not huge. If you're looking for a traditional quick diner breakfast, definitely worth a stop. read more

Ordered hashbrowns - told didn't have them would you like fried potatoes? Sure. After 45minutes because we asked them to check on our food since people who arrived after us already finished which is a bad sign they brought out a cut-up baked potato.....lol if you're having potato problems just come tell us early so I don't have to sit 45 minutes while you potato panic lol. Or tell the overworked waitress it's gonna be an hour for potatoes so she can tell us and we can choose something else. Just communicate. Don't potato panic. Came in 9:15a on a Monday. Don't bring out a mashed potato when fried was ordered 45min ago. But you know you stuck that potato in the oven a while ago and could have said something. Come ask us if we'd rather have something else that's easier for the kitchen if that's going to be the thing. Here over an hour for what should be a simple bfast order. Set back a bit off Dayton Blvd, it can be easy to drive by the first time. There is a sign at the road, but it does not stand out and can get lost in the background. There is a lot of parking, but know the entrance is on the side of the building, not the front facing the road. Spaces are adjacent to the building as well as in a row in the rest of the large lot. Traffic is usually light, so crossing a traffic lane is no issue. The handicapped spaces are by the door on the side of the building. Walking in, the sign indicated we should seat ourselves, so we found a booth. Seating consists of tables and booths, with a larger table in the section near the front of the building. It is an older building which could use some freshening, but everything was clean. Even the worn floors and table tops were clean and not sticky. Our waitress arrived within a minute or two of us sitting down, bringing the menus and took our drink order. We got our drinks in two different deliveries. Our waitress had several tables she was working and seemed to handle them well, dropping off items at the various tables as she walked by. Our food took maybe 10 minutes to arrive. I ordered the "2 egg special". My eggs were cooked exactly as I ordered. The two sausage patties were cooked completely but not overdone. The biscuits and gravy were excellent. The biscuit could stand up to the gravy but was still soft enough to cut with a fork. The sausage gravy was thick and plentiful. I did add a little more pepper, but that is a personal preference. My dining partner's veggie omelet was very good. All vegetables tasted fresh, and the addition of sour cream amped up the flavor. The grits were nothing special, but it's really hard to make grits stand out. Lillie Maes is a great place for a filling and good southern country breakfast, and they also have a lunch and dinner menu. I expect I will be coming back here often. read more

From the Times Free Press: There's something special about Lillie Mae's Place. It's not because of its cozy interior or its friendly atmosphere. It's not even because it offers the best home-cooked meal in Chattanooga outside of grandma's house. It's because of its sense of home. The staff is relaxed and caring. The food is hot and inviting. The dessert is sweet. The sweet tea is sweeter. I'd write that the food is better than anywhere outside of mom's kitchen, but that would overstate my mother's cooking. It's the type of meal you can't get at a restaurant. Except you can -- at 4712 Dayton Boulevard. THE SPACE The restaurant's exterior isn't flashy. It doesn't seek attention. It's a place you have to look for or already know exists. It's tucked away on a busy road, hidden in plain sight. But inside is warm and inviting. It's full of friendly faces where customers not only know the waitress but also her children and spouse. You'll likely see several diners talking to old friends sitting nearby, reminding us Chattanooga just may be the biggest little city this side of Reno. A sign hanging on the wooden counter below the cash register reads "$5 charge for whining," which goes along nicely with the restaurant's "Shut up and sit down breakfast." It's a subtle reminder of strict Southern roots accompanied by the softness and care so often displayed in families below the Mason-Dixon line. Behind the counter hangs a long shelf filled with antiques and coffee mugs of all patterns, adding to the homey feel. The side entryway opens into the larger dining area with about 10 booths and several tables in the corner. Additional quieter space in the back room is filled with 12 wooden tables surrounded by old wooden chairs I'd swear were taken straight from my great-aunt's dining room. A sign hangs in the back room with "God's 10 Rules" listing the Ten Commandments in a way even a child can easily understand: "Put God first, tell the truth and be happy with what you have." THE FOOD The daily specials are the easy dinner choice. For $6.95, customers get an entrée, two vegetables, a choice of bread and a drink. The long list of 23 "vegetables" ranging from hash brown casserole or fried squash to mac-and-cheese and baked beans is a personal favorite. The daily special was stuffed bell peppers or homemade salmon patties. I ordered the salmon patties, mac-and-cheese, hash brown casserole, fried cornbread and sweet tea. There wasn't a disappointing dish on the table. The sides were better than the main course, but that speaks more favorably of the sides than it does negatively about the main dish. I will gladly go back for another helping of the salmon patties. The hash brown casserole rivaled Cleveland's Farmhouse for best in the area. The addition of mac-and-cheese complimented the meal well, and the sweat tea tasted like it came out of my own fridge. This was my first time trying fried cornbread, so I asked my waitress about it when my food was served. She explained how it was made and offered to replace it with another bread choice free of charge assuming I wasn't pleased -- I was. I finished my meal in a blissful peace comforted by the savory meal. I ordered a second helping of vegetables to go ($1.50), and my check was waiting on the table ready for when I finished. I looked over the homemade dessert menu but was too full to want anything. I regretted the decision as soon as I walked out the door and made another trip the following day for the peach cobbler with a scoop of ice cream ($2.50 plus $1 for ice cream). The dessert was as good as any non-restaurant dessert I've eaten. Whether or not the peaches were truly fresh, they sure tasted like it. The vanilla ice cream wasn't anything special, but it was a nice topper to the cobbler. THE SERVICE The best part of Lillie Mae's is the service. My waitress was attentive, kind and prompt. The restaurant was full, something I didn't completely notice until I was leaving, which is a testament to the waitresses. My waitress treated me as if I were her only customer but wasn't overbearing. She met each of my questions with satisfactory answers gently explained and always asked if there was anything else she could do. My food was on the table less than 10 minutes from when I ordered. THE VERDICT Lillie Mae's Place reminds me of all the reasons so many move to this area. We often get caught up in the news of gang violence, whether or not the bike lanes are good for the community or the latest developments on the local school board ­­­-- all important topics. My brother in law and I ate here tonight and I would recommend it with some caveats. The food was acceptable and the price was very reasonable. My brother in law ordered a hamburger that was obviously hand patted and well cooked. The small order of fries would be considered large at most places. I ordered the chili and a baked potato. The potato was oven cooked and almost perfect. The chili was not Tex-mex. More of a local recipe with pinto beans. I added Tobasco and solved the lack of heat problem then spooned the chili on my potato. Really really good. Service was excellent. The waitress showed up immediately and came by often after the food arrived to check if we needed anything. As for the caveats, the atmosphere is very pedestrian and the menu variety is what you would expect from a local meat and three. Six of us went to Lillie's a couple of days ago for lunch. We arrived at noon and were seated quickly. It then took 30 minutes for a waitress to take our drink order. And twenty minutes later we got our drinks. Keep in mind that there were only six tables with customers. At the time we receive red our drinks we ordered our lunch and some of us had to change their selection because it wasn't available, this was common things like sliced turkey and potatoes. After another 15 minutes our waiter informed us there was a shift change and she would no longer be serving us. We finally received our food 90 minutes from when we were seated. I was just getting up to walk out when it showed up. Needless to say all six of us said the food wasn't very good. We will never go there again, so disappointing because we had heard it was a good place to eat. read more

I've only been twice to Lillie Mae's restaurant in Red Bank. The food is good and certainly worth the stop to eat. It is home-cooked and ample. At lunch yesterday I ordered chicken livers and would do so again. My grandson loves his hamburger and my granddaughter raved about her grilled cheese. Today at breakfast I had the special with eggs, bacon and biscuits with gravy. That, as well as the coffee was tasty and filling. The only negative I can share is the wait. On both days it seemed there was an inordinate time between placing my order and it's delivery to the table. Perhaps this is a reflection of the "cook to order" practice. I can't say. So, don't be in a rush at Lillie Mae's. However, when the food arrives and you eat the fixin's you'll be glad you came. read more

Came here for late lunch, early dinner(after being at the DMV all day). Had the blackened salmon steak on rice, fried okra and green beans. Cleaned my plate!! Love me some county cooking and glad I stopped to eat. Salmon was perfect as was the rice (I can usually leave the rice, ate all of it.) Loved the fried okra, green beans were probably from a can, but they added their own touch. All this for $9.95. Taking home the lemon icebox pie for dessert,too full to taste it now. I'd happily go here any night of the week! Lille Mae's Place does great traditional Southern food, and the crowds who come here are a pretty good testament to how great this restaurant delivers really flavorful and diverse menu options. The atmosphere here is pretty nonexistent, and it can get very loud at certain times. I've never found these factors to be offputting, but some do. I'd say it's just because so many families and friends go here that it's inevitable to hear lots of people catching up, especially around the holiday season. Go here and check it out. They're not lacking for business, but if you're in the area I would definitely give Lillie Mae's a very strong recommendation. This is the real thing: simple cooking like your Great-Grandmother might make (although my Great-Grandmother's cooking was better of course. And we all say that. But I'm actually serious!) read more

This is a locals joint we hit for breakfast quite often & once we came for lunch. All I remember about lunch was my sons chicken and dumplings (taste like grandma made it) and the corn fritters which are addictive! Breakfast is always packed, the wait staff knows what they are doing and boy do they hustle! Seems like everyone knows everyone here and if they don't, they are still quick to smile and holler a "good morning" or "nice weather today, huh!?" at you.
