The food is Fabulous! Love the fish 'n chips! Fresh and tasty!

The staff is quite accomodating to curbside pickup orders, but the food is purely awful. The breading undercooked and tasteless. Sad.

Only take out. I ordered Bangers & Mashed. The menu describes the entry "Traditional English Sausage With Creamy Mashed Potatoes And Gavey". The sausage is far from traditional and at best an average sausage. The potatoes, definitely not creamy. And to add insult to injury, no gravy! I discoved this after driving ten miles back to where I was staying. Wasn't going to drive back. Customers should be able to rely on the restaurant to make sure an order is complete. But, if you're picking up an order best to open and check everything. Better yet, go some where else. Their food is below average. read more

Passing through the quaint town of Bennington, I became hungry for some local fare. I had read a bunch of reviews on Yelp, attempted the Blue Benn Diner (yuck, see my other review), and settled on Lil' Britain for some fish & chips. I had the small chicken tenders combo, which included four strips of chicken, hand-battered and fried right on the spot. It was served with a large portion of chips (fries to us Yankees) that were thick and hearty. I chose the barbecue sauce as my dip for the chicken. While everything, including the comes-with-my-meal cole slaw, was delicious, the barbecue sauce was the typical plastic container in which patrons at McDonald's find themselves dipping. Yes, it was tasty, but unusual considering everything else here was fresh and homemade. Otherwise, the chicken strips were white-meat and perfectly cooked. My friend had the fish and chips with fries and cole slaw. He really enjoyed the portion size of the cod and the thickly cut fries. He said the batter was great and did not overwhelm the fish. The tartar sauce was, as he said, delicious with a tangy background, like relish. "Small" meals are priced right and may well have enough food for a meal, but if you are even moderately hungry, get the large sizes. Parking is plentiful in the area and I consider this place to be a gem among run-of-the-mill cafes and diners in the area. read more

I had the Shrimp and Chips while my husband had the Clams and chips. Both were excellent. The shrimp was a great size with good flavor and the breading was just right. I hate when I get a shrimp with what seems like five pounds of breading and a dust of shrimp. This was perfect. My husband said the clam were good, fried just right. We both left feeling full. We enjoyed a great meal. My husband tried their label Diet Root Beer and I had a Raspberry Lime Rickey, both were good sodas. Excellent spot, huge public parking lot just down the street. As a local I can see myself visiting more, in fact I wish they were open today I can't wait to try the fish and chips. read more

A small place in downtown Bennington. You order at the counter and they bring the food to your table. The fish & chips as well as the scallops were very fresh. They don't have alchol just sodas. Among the soft drink choices are British sodas. read more

Best fish and chips I have had on this side of the Atlantic. If this was closer to us it would probably be visited every few weeks. Three years ago, my friend and I took a trip to Bennington, Vermont and looked up a few places to check out. One of the places was a British fish and chip shop called Lil' Britain. Unfortunately, the day we were there, the shop had mechanical issues with their fan ventilation and weren't able to cook their signature fish items. When we were able to revisit the Bennington area just this week we stopped in and had some wonderful food! Crispy fried fish and chips, steak pie and I even learned the attraction of a real chip butty: fried potatoes on a butter roll. Persistence pays off! read more

There is really not much to say, other than this place is excellent. Hands down, the best fish and chips in all of New England, and I challenge anyone to try to prove me wrong. The atmosphere is quite charming, just a tiny hole-in-the-wall eatery decorated in British memorabilia. The settings are no-nonsense, simple paper plates and plastic cutlery. This is a tiny shop run by a man who's passion is to bring the foods of his homeland for us to enjoy, simple as that. Ab Fab! No need to look further when it comes to authentic English fish & chips. Everything is fresh, consistent and simply delicious. This is a regular visit for my dad and I. Aside from fish & chips they have a terrific variety of other authentic English "fast food". When it's busy (and that's common) seating is tight and the wait might be a little long (not unreasonably long!) because everything is cooked fresh... but the wait is definitely worth it! I love this diner. It has a warm, cozy atmosphere complete with plenty of English-based decorations, soccer (or football, whichever you want to call it) on television, and English goods/candies for sale. The food is also very legitimate and makes for a good British dining experience - bangers and mash, fish and chips, all that good stuff. Most importantly, the food is delicious - I love their bangers. It's reasonably priced, too, as you get a fair amount and it's pretty filling. It also manages to be delicious without being TOO MUCH or TOO GREASY, which makes it a very appetizing option when I want to eat out but I don't want to destroy my stomach, or spend a fortune. My only complaint is that, like many other places around Bennington, it seems to be closed everytime I'm craving it. read more

We are 3 doors down from Lil Britain, and the manager Joey Kulkin is sending people there all the time because of rave reviews he gives the food. The fish is fresh and delicious and plentiful, as are the chips, and the mushy peas is a wonderful complement. One of Fiddlehead's regular customers comes down from the mountain once a month. He told Joey that he's from England and Lil Britain serves the best fish and chips outside of England. They're great business neighbors, too. read more

My husband and I drove to Bennington pretty much just to check this place out yesterday. I now wish we lived closer. It's a casual, laid back place. They have a UK telephone booth in one corner, tons of photos on the wall, a flat screen TV that was tuned to a soccer match, and British music playing (in our case it was Elton John). There is a section with British food goodies, like Kit Kat Crunch bars, for sale. :) We didn't talk much during our meal because we were too busy enjoying the crispy coating on the falling off your fork, flaky, moist fish. The chips were quite delicious too. I had the cucumber and onion salad for a side, which was a special (but I wish was a regular menu item). My husband had a roll with butter; it tasted homemade, which I bet it is. Good size portions and it's a great value. I can't wait to go back. read more

Had lunch at lil' Britain while on vacation. I had read a review somewhere (maybe in a magazine?) that said this was the most authentic fish-n-chips restaurant in the New England area. Being of English decent I had to try it. I both went with the small fish-n-chips platterwith cole slaw . It was very authentic. Crisp batter, flaky white fish, thick chips. They have a whole menu of similar foods. They also sell some foods and such that are found in England. It's a small hole in the wall gem but wonderful food. read more

Went here the 1st time on Black Friday for a quick bite to eat and was pleasantly surprized. With Verns gone, this steps it up a notch, but is still very casual. It is the real deal for fish and chips, very authentic with everything but the real newspaper. The owners are from England and went back there just to learn the "right way" to make fish and chips. Their veggie curry pie was homemade and outstanding. They sell a number of British food products. My brother who lived in England and married a Brit was salavating when I emailed him about this place. Finally brought him and he loved it. They have a map of England with pins all over it. We were passing through town and stopped here for a quick dinner. It is a fairly small and informal space. We ordered at the counter and our food was brought out quickly. I ordered the fish and chips and I can honestly say it was just about the best fish sandwich I have ever had. The roll was awesome and the breading was light. Usually fried food like that leaves me with regret but I was very happy with this one. I felt that the chips were a little mushy for my taste but my wife felt they were right on the money. I got the chicken fingers and chips and I thought it was pretty good. The chicken was good quality and they gave more chips than I could eat. My wife got the fish and chips and thought it was great. This is basically a fast food joint, so if you keep that in mind, it's pretty darn good for what it is. When I'm out this way again, I'll stop back. read more

Great little place for lunch and dinner. The fish fry is REALLY good- it isn't soggy or greasy. They make it to order, so it's hot and delicious. I have a friend who grew up in England who says there is none better, and I agree. Prices are very reasonable and the service is quick. read more

Pro's: clean! Cleanest bathroom I have ever been in, in a restaurant! Very friendly atmosphere. Fair prices. Good portions. Only one in my party got fish and he rated it a 4 out of 5. That being said, the other 2 in my party got chicken fingers and chips and so I feel a little out of line to comment on them since the place is really about the fish and chips. BUT.... if you offer it on your menu I guess it's fair game. The chicken was "real" and not processed and it was piping hot. Con's: it's about the chicken fingers. They had a batter on them that is similar to brown sandpaper. Other places have served this up and I don't particularly care for it, but that's just a preference I guess. Chicken was a little dry/overcooked and the coating created a very tough exterior to it. Other: I went there with my parents who are in their 70's. Perhaps consider printing up a few menus that folks can bring back to a table to look at. Standing at the counter, for elderly folks, as well as reading a menu on a wall can present challenges. . Also, I was disappointed that the honey mustard sauce was a packet of Ken's brand. A basic homemade sauce would have made it special. Overall, I would go back and try other things. I pointed out a lot of cons and suggestions but I didn't think badly of the place. read more

Recommended by a friend so we visited from North to check it out. We lived in Lakenheath, England for four years and F&C is something we miss. I have been in search of finding something that is as good as the real thing for years! This was spot on! Swoon The atmosphere was perfectly plain and casual just like the chippy shops in England. I honestly felt for a moment that we were transported in time... like really felt it. All complete right down to the glass bottle shop brand drinks. Three of us had the F&C, one had the Shrimp&C which all were very generous portions. The food was perfect! Fresh, made-to-order, delicious, and even complete with malt vinegar at the table. The shop attendant was professional, friendly, patient, and really great all around! The 1.5hour trip was worth it. My only complaint would be the distance... wish this shop was closer... I had a late dinner here since the yelp review was good. The fries were good, fish was a little dry. No silverware which was disappointing. I am not much for dinner on a paper plate with plastic utensils unless I am camping. read more
