We wandered into Dempsey's on a whim for a late breakfast and were pleasantly surprised. A bright…read moresunny space with solid diner-style breakfast and lunch fare accompanied by fast and friendly service. Texas toast, eggs Benedict, and a BLT were all excellent so what's not to like? I think we've found a new spot to add to our roster of breakfast destinations. (To be fair, the coffee wasn't great. But very few diners have great coffee these days.)

Wtf happened to the absolute best breakfast place? I'm so sad…read more The food is still decent. However, the server recommended a cinnamon bagel with a bacon egg and cheese. What?! It was good with an asiago bagel. The prices have skyrocketed- breakfast items are all over $10. $13 for two slices of french toast, $11 for a bacon, egg and cheese. Most menu items are around $20. Yelp, change the price point for Dempsey's. The check came with an automatic 18% + tip suggestion. That irks me. 15% is an acceptable tip. I used to recommend Dempsey's. Not anymore. There is nothing special about it anymore.

We had a great breakfast at Franny's in Malden! We came around 9:30 AM on a morning visit and were…read moreseated right away with no wait. They have about 5-6 tables that can accommodate larger parties, along with additional seating at the counter. Parking can be a little difficult since Franny's is located right on a main street. There is 2-hour street parking available, but finding an open spot can take some patience. If you can find parking, though, it's definitely worth the stop! We ordered the Steak Tips & Eggs and the Hungry Man plate, along with two mimosas. The steak tips were marinated in BBQ sauce and cooked to our liking. They were incredibly flavorful and delicious! The potatoes were also actually well done, which was a pleasant surprise because not every place gets them right. That's exactly how we prefer them, so we really appreciated it. The Hungry Man plate was a great portion for a hungry man or woman! It came with two large pancakes (wow!), two pieces of bacon (you may even get three), two sausage links, and potatoes. Definitely a filling meal! We also ordered two mimosas, which came in standard beer glasses rather than the traditional mimosa glasses. It was unexpected, but definitely memorable! The staff was friendly, and the restaurant had that great local Malden feel to it. You can tell it's a place where the community comes together. As an added bonus, there's even a pub right next door! The only thing I'd suggest to improve the overall experience would be having the chef wear a hairnet, gloves, and an apron. Since you can see the food being prepared right there, it would be a nice extra touch and help reassure customers that all food-handling and health-code practices are being followed. Overall, we really enjoyed our experience and would definitely come back. Great food, friendly service, generous portions, no wait when we visited, and a true local feel. If you can find a parking spot, definitely give Franny's a try!

When I first saw her go back behind the counter after sitting there playing with her, writing things down, sipping her coke and talking to an elderly man customer. She walked right behind that counter and just started preparing food. NO GLOVES!!!!! She then drove a customer home (very nice of her) but she came back and started food immediately... at least she put on gloves this time. When she made my food, she reached right into the container of walnuts (NO GLOVES) and sprinkled some into the pancake batter. I don't remember seeing a grade in the window. Health dept probably never goes by! I'm sure this is fine for cooking at home for your family, but disgusting when you're serving the public. I felt like I was gonna throw up the whole time. I left most of the food on the plate. Also, my side of butter with the pancakes had lint and hair in it.

The corned beef hash had good flavor and decent hollandaise, and the homefries were double fried so they were tasty but like extra crunchy. Coffee was alright, but I dinged them on service because we had to ask twice to get a refill and flag again for waters they forgot. There were 2 servers in the place and while they were nice they were often doing nothing, one hanging by the bar and the other by the food window on their phone. Food also took awhile, we were there for almost 90 mins which is long for diner brunch IMO. It's close by to my friends place, so might be back, but wouldn't go out of my way to return.

I'm feeling guilty writing this review because of how much we liked the waitress as a person, but I…read morethink it should be shared. The whole experience almost reminded me of visiting a family that I'm not a part of...Uncomfortable and confusing. Everyone else was getting up and helping themselves to things (like coffee), so we assumed the coffee was self-service. (Since the waitress was doing double duty as the cook, seemed even more logical). My husband got up and started to get some coffee, and was immediately shooed away. It was a little bit embarrassing. The tables weren't dirty, but a few of them had personal items on them, like hats and papers and coats. Coat rack near our table was also full, but there were only 4 other people in there besides us, so I was wondering where all the coats came from. We both ordered breakfast sandwiches because the dish I wanted to order they didn't have, and the waitress said they come with coffee. (I was confused on whether we were getting coffee with the meal because she felt bad they were out of stuff, or if that's just how it works). I only got water, but we were charged for the one coffee. Not a huge deal, but not what we were told. The sandwiches were decent, but not better than what you can get at any diner/greasy spoon or cafe/bakery to go order. The other patrons all knew the waitress, and as that became more obvious, we realized why they were able to help themselves to coffee. One guy was even going behind the kitchen counter for something. I wouldn't go back, just because it's a strange place. I wonder how they stay open. Worth noting that it's cash only. ATM is available inside.
