Great place, with 2 1/2 caveats.
1. Too many kids! Fortunately, swim time for the kids is restricted somewhat. But this is definitely a FAMILY gym. Check elsewhere for a more adult fitness facility. But if you've got a family and lots of cash, this is the place. By the way, kids as young as 12 are allowed into the workout areas that include the cardio/aerobic exercise area and the strength machines. They do have to be 15 to enter the "free weight" area.
Also, some kids (young teens) seem to "live" there. Kept coming across the same ones on different days. And they are in the changing areas too. Fortunately, and to Lifetime Fitness' credit, there are some "family changing rooms" which decreases the number of kids running around the adult changing rooms. And there is a "kid's area" that helps restrict them as well.
But, I sincerely wish they had a 15/16 year old limit for the adult changing rooms and upstairs workout area that contains the machines.
(By the way, the very best times in my life was when I was with my kids and grandkids. So I certainly don't blame parents for wanting to have their kids there. In fact, I applaud them for it. It's just that, for an adult who wants to work out fairly seriously, having kids about and hearing the constant PA calls for parents to come discipline their kids who are in the child care area can be a negative, at least to me)
2. But apart from the kids, my only complaint would be, "It's rather expensive." They quote an outrageous "joining fee", but there is generally a pretty big discount on that. In the end, what I was quoted was $95.00 (plus tax) to join and then $59.95 (plus tax)/month-Gold Membership, which is their lowest priced membership in Austin. Per couple it's $108.14/month. That does get you into North and South locations in Austin. The rate is higher if you want to be able to go to any facility nationwide. But there is no contract, a plus.
By contrast, "24 Hour Fitness" charges a $130.00 (single) joining fee (possible discounts on that single joining fee, but I haven't tried to get 'em down yet). But their monthly fee is $42.99 (single) and includes use of all locations.
Side note: I was rather shocked to find that the monthly single rate at the YMCA was $55.00/month!
So (tax included) I save $18.36/month if I go with 24 Hour Fitness. (I ruled out Gold's because they have very few have pools, which I need because of my bad knees) But, Lifetime is only $5.36 more than the YMCA!
My final decision? Lifetime Fitness, for 3 reasons.
1. I go in the early mornings before work when there are very few kids.
2. Lifetime has 3 pools (one is outdoors and closed in the Winter), and thus there are many more lanes to swim in than at 24 Hour. And it is fairly rare that the main indoor lap pool is completely tied up by other swimmers. But should that happen, in the winter, that means moving to the "kid's pool" (unoccupied by kids in the early morning) and swimming in some lanes they have there. That would be fine, but those lanes are pretty shallow and only about 2/3rds as long as the 25 meter pool. For me, that means 20 strokes per lap instead of 30, a negative.
3. Lifetime Fitness supplies free clean towels for you to use. Initially, that may not sound important, but I discovered that it was oh-so-good to have those available. Now, after enjoying those towels at Lifetime, if a gym did not supply towels, that would be a deal-breaker for me. You'll see what I mean if you join or at least try the place out.
Another note: In their swimming pools, 24 Hour has salt water. Lifetime uses chlorine and it is not uncommon for Lifetime to let their indoor lap pool get cloudy and rather dirty, especially the South Austin location.
Well, as I said, beware of the kids. If you can get past them, the rather high monthly fee, and the occasionally dirty pool at the South location, this place rules. One star removed for the abundance of kids, high price (but worth it), and occasionally dirty pool. But I gotta say, a great place nonetheless.
Final hint: Both Lifetime Fitness and 24 Hour Fitness will give you a 7 day free trial. Take them up on it and learn what goes on first hand AT THE TIMES THAT YOU WILL BE USING THE FACILITY and see what you prefer. read more
