I am going to try and make this as concise as possible, and break out the review into segments, so that people interested in different things can jump to that section. Amenities: First stop on the tour, because they're hard not to notice. IF I were grading on amenities alone, this place would get 5 stars. It has a salon, pool, indoor basketball court, rock-climbing wall, racket ball, and well-appointed locker-rooms. They try hard to keep the place clean; I see people commenting on how filthy things are sometimes, but to me all that amounts to are most members being slobs - the place is clean, but people can't help themselves from leaving their towels literally everywhere in this place, or not cleaning up after themselves in the bathroom like they were raised by wolves. Cardio equipment: Tons of it, and as of late, a lot of it is brand new because of the remodel and "upgrade" to an onyx limited club. Classes: Admittedly my review will be lacking here as I don't take any classes, I'm sure others have that covered. People look sweaty and tired when they come out of them, that's the point, right? Free Weights: This is where they ultimately get a lower rating from me, simply because this is where I spend most of my time, and I notice details. Having been a member at many different clubs over the years, I have a lot of experience to draw from in comparison. The first glaringly obvious thing about this club is the lack of dumbbells overall. They have one small area where they are located, and they only go up to 110 lbs. While they have overhauled much of the floor where the machines and free weight equipment resides, they haven't done a thing to where the dumbbells are since my first stint here (at least 3 1/2 years). They've added additional platforms and plate loaded equipment which is great, but still no more dumbbells. Speaking of the plate loaded equipment, they could use more, and of greater variety. Currently they have one row of them, which encompasses 1 for shoulders, 3 for chest, and 2 for back (each different). They should utilize the space better and push the platforms out some and create a second row of the plate loaded machines that back up to the ones currently there (add some variety, an additional couple for chest when others are using it, etc.). The other problem I see here is with the apparent lack of gym equipment maintenance going on. One example, which I will post a picture of here soon after this review, is one cable machine has been broken for months. No sign on it, nothing, just broken (Edit - Literally the day I wrote this review I went in a few hours later and it was fixed). Other equipment has some noticeable issues, but is still usable, which tells me they don't have routine or preventive maintenance performed. It seems to be 100% reactive, which is dangerous, and takes longer (and is costlier) to fix. The staff here is relatively nice, though to be honest I don't come to hang-out with the staff. My opinion on trainers will be extremely biased due to my own experience with working out, so it will be relative. I also realize there is going to be a "personal" component to whether someone likes a trainer or not. The only thing I'll say is I have used a trainer, James, to tweak my own program, and the dude knows his stuff. Then again, he also looks like he does (he has done a bb'ing competition or two), so it's more digestible when he's telling me what to do. I think if you're a novice or intermediate-level, there are plenty of trainers that can help you out and help you improve your game. Overall: This is the only place I can reliably train at now because it is one of the only 24 hour gym's in town now that Gold's no longer is. It takes some marks for the free weights, and maintenance, but overall it has most of what anybody needs to get in a good work out and then some - for the price though, they HAVE to up their game with what is lacking, and listen to member feedback. read more

Top notch. Equipment, facilities, and staff. Even when its packed you can still easily get a good workout. Con's: Don't like that people reserve the basketball courts for bday parties. Its definately expensive. read more

The good: Best pool facilities in SW Austin. Can always get a machine to work out. Best collection of facilities (pools, machines, free weights, squash, Bball, spinning, day care, cafe, day spa, climbing wall, more.) Plenty of parking. Family friendly. "No naked" policy in steam/sauna. All age ranges represented. Surprisingly affordable. The bad: Hard to get a lane in pools for adult swimming (and no signup sheet.) Some pools/jacuzzis can be randomly closed for months with no reason given (outdoor jacuzzi is usually closed.) Changing room (I only know about the men's) is not well-maintained all the time. (Issues include broken lockers, lockers without keys, towels and other debris left in steam/sauna, and, most disturbing, an odor that reached epic levels before being resolved.) The bottom line: The good far outweighs the bad. There is no better facility in the area. read more

I've been a member since 2007 when they first opened their doors in south Austin. For the first few years this place was pretty solid. Not much to complain about. Adequate free-weight area, plenty of cardio equipment, rock wall, etc. The rates were higher than any other chain gym, but it was new and nice. Last year or so, maybe year and a half, this place has gone down hill. This place is a zoo unless you go at midnight. If you actually plan out your workout in advance, expect to spend lots of time standing around waiting for equipment. Especially if you want access to free weights. Also this place is over five years old and things are starting to fall apart. I've personally had to tell operations of a few dangerously close to breaking pieces of equipment... and repairs take a looong time. Another thing that doesn't tend to bother people until they've been members for some time is the massive amount of advertising you are exposed to while in the gym. Every piece of wall that's not a window or a mirror is considered real estate to sell you everything from their own products, to semi-related fitness products, to cars and trucks. In addition, their private "Lifetime Network" that is playing around the clock over the speakers and on every third TV set is 33% pop music, 33% commercials, and 33% advertising for their own additional cost services like training and the like. In over five years of being a member, and being both satisfied and then completely unsatisfied (I just last week put in my cancellation notice) I can say that this facility is over-priced, not maintained, and in no way (contrary to what you think first time you walk in) different than any other gym... other than price. Think long and hard about if you're ever actually going to use a pool slide or rock wall before you offer up $80+ a month for a gym. I can however see the appeal for a family with small children but for adults only... save your money. Go to Gold's or 24-Hour. If you are a free-weight lifter, do NOT join this gym. This is a machine filled gym. Very limited free-weights when considering how many ppl they pack into this place at once. Especially after the week of 11/5/12 when they shrunk the free weight area by 25% to make room for more trendy junk equipment. read more

Didn't even think twice about quitting this gym. 1) they raised my membership fee 3 times in a year. Infuriating. 2) the trainers do paid classes on the community equipment during the most high traffic times. It's a nightmare already during those times, so when the trainers take up half of the equipment, it's impossible to spend less than 2 hours there. Want to find a squat rack at 5:30 PM? Good luck. read more

This place has great facilities but can be rather impersonal. The cancelation policy is a pain so make sure to try and not cancel if you can help it. I will say that the employees of Life Time were very friendly and the classes were top notch. I will say that the workout floor equipment could be cleaned a little better after use. But, this is typical of a gym. With a few more improvements, this place could be a 5 star in my book! read more

Terrible customer service. They make it the biggest hassle to cancel your membership even if you only stepped inside the gym once years ago. read more

This is one of the best gyms I've ever been to. I came with a friend who is a member. The guy checked us in without any hassle. The dressing rooms are huge with plenty of space to change. The gym must have everything. Basketball and squash courts, and outdoor pool, and probably even an indoor volleyball court. We went upstairs to lift and there were plenty of machines and benches. Granted, we were there on a Friday night but I have a hard time seeing this place get packed the way gyms in the DC area (where I reside) do. After weights, we got some cardio and finished up. There seems to be a great snack bar downstairs that I'd like to check out but were were short on time. Lookin' forward to coming back the next time I'm in town visiting my friend! By the way, I hear it's expensive but not my problem since I went for free!! read more

Do NOT waste your money here. They do not care about their customers, it's just a for profit company and they have no interest in your happiness. My son is always getting sick from the germs in the childcare center or they call after 20 minutes to come get him because he is unhappy, overstimulated and lacks attention from the care in there. Every time I walk in there are several children crying uncontrollably and none of the staff are doing anything about it. They need more attentive staff that actually interact and care about your children. I am unable to use the gym because of these reasons so I am wasting my money until the contract is over and they will not let me out of it. Extremely unhappy customer. I will be telling everyone I know about the lack of care and service at this gym. read more

Many Years I'v gone to gold's Gym and it was okay. Then about 8 months ago I made the switch to Lifetime. I was visiting Austin for Splash Days over Labor Day weekend and knew I needed to get a pump in before hitting the lake and Life Time seemed like the obvious option. It did not disappoint, it's a beautiful facility with a great layout. Super clean, had a plethora of benches, racks, and free weights available and was worth the day pass $. I went over the lunch hour so there were folks there but I never had to wait for specific machines. I walked there and had a little trouble finding the entrance (it's located between two parking garages) but once I got up there, I was greeted by Noah who was just fantastic. He got me registered, showed me around the facility, and even helped me get strategic on which body parts to hit so I'd look great for the holiday weekend. I had heard Life Time held its team to a higher standard than most gyms but Noah really embodied everything I could ever imagine needing in member services. I'll be back at the facility next time I'm in town. read more

They replaced the machines I liked w/ a TRX island and 8 olympic stations that I don't use. Last day of membership couple of days ago. I joined Lifetime Fitness South Austin about 2 months ago now and I'm loving it. There are so many different things to do: swimming, rock wall, basketball, machines, group fitness, etc. I LOVE the Zumba classes and have been going about 3-4 times a week! I don't have kids yet, but I know members who do and they love the fact that you can bring your kid into the childcare center while you are working out. I bet it would be really convenient. The only down side is the cost. It is pretty pricey at $70/a month plus tax for just me but so far, its worth it. I also love that there is not a membership contract. I can cancel at anytime. read more

My wife and I joined Lifetime Fitness a few months ago, after moving from Central Austin to SW Austin. Lifetime is very different from every gym I've ever worked out in, which essentially revolved around the weight room. Don't get me wrong, Lifetime's weight room is great, but the place has so much more to offer than just weight & cardio equipment (of which they have more than enough). The facility is absolutely enormous! There are both indoor and outdoor pools (recreation and lap) complete with water slides (not sure what fitness goals they target, but they're fun!), 2 large hot tubs, co-ed dry sauna, private dry saunas and steam rooms in the men's and women's locker room and private showers with towel service. What sold my wife on the place was the indoor climbing gym, which is pretty cool I must admit. That part of the building also has 2 full size basketball courts and 2 racketball courts. There are also tons of classes, from kickboxing to aerobics to yoga to indoor cycling. I'm also told that the childcare facilities are excellent. From having experience as a personal trainer in a past life, I can attest that Lifetime's trainers know what they're doing, just based on their interaction with their clients. I wasn't all that excited about switching gyms at first, but now that I'm not 20 anymore, it's pretty nice to have a spa to relax in after a workout. Hey, Lance is 2 years older than I am and holding his own so far in the Tour de France...that makes me feel less old. I can honestly say that I love working out there! read more

Lifetime is always clean and has very modern amenities. I rarely have to wait for a machine or free weights, unless I go during the after-work rush, and even then it's rare. The number of options for exercising, including free classes, are incredible. The cafe's food is pretty good overall and very welcome after a long workout. However, the preparation time of the food can be a bit slow. The reason I give it 4 stars and not 5 is because they allow invite-only reservations of the basketball courts on weekends for hours at a time, but do not seem to have any schedule for it. I even spoke with a staff member to confirm it was legit, and she could not find any record in the system but said "oh yeah he does that a lot", as if it was acceptable. read more

When I joined Lifetime, I worked as an overnight baker. Since it's open 24 hours, I could swim at midnight, shower and go to work more awake without the usual triple shot of caffeine (find me a coffee place besides the gas station that's open at midnight. . .) Anyway, I'm a normal unemployed person now. I'm also a long-distance triathlete, which means swim swim swim and other masochistic endeavors. First the good news: I love how sprawling and open this place is. One day I'm going to lie my sore butt down for a massage and a facial (on my face not my butt). I love that there's an outdoor pool AND an indoor pool. The weights are usually open without 25 people waiting to use one. And I love the copious discounts members get (40 percent off Tyr swimsuits, anyone?) Staff is nice and helpful and showers are clean and available. Bad news: One trip to Lifetime and I was frightened for the world's overpopulation problem. Kids are screaming, squealing and running around like workout-disturbing demons. Parents, I think, just let them figuring they're in an enclosed environment and that everyone thinks their screaming child is special and therefore is allowed to be more possessed than the other ones. I realize that there's about ten members who don't have kids but what's wrong with a little set-aside adult time? And not at two in the morning, either. read more

Couldn't stand this gym. I joined when it was brand new, and while it was nice for a while, it went downhill quickly. First, the clientele annoyed me. There are a lot of hypercompetitive Type-A yuppies who think they are god's gift to mankind. I'm sure their 3-series with pleather seats make them feel important, but they throw a lot of unnecessary shade. Second, all of the machines have little signs velcro-ed to them with the hours that classes will be using them. Unfortunately these schedules are complex, and they tend to take up the times when I am free to work out. My favorite cardio machines were the new-fangled ellipticals that let you run in place, but it seemed like every time I was there they'd be occupied. Third, their stupid cafe stinks the whole place up. I do not want to come to the gym for my health and mental wellness only to find the pervasive stink of cheap grilled cheese lingering everywhere. Fourth, and this is what really gets me, they keep sending out emails offering to let me rejoin with no extra fees. Except, of course, the $80 new member processing fee, which is at the bottom of the email in fine print. Wtf? Do they really think that is the way to win people back? I might rejoin if they didn't try to pull such a basic trick on me. It's ridiculous! read more

I've been a member at lifetime since 2007 and have been actively using my membership at this location for over a year now. The moment I started going to this gym I felt super unwelcomed by them telling me I'm not allowed to workout there anymore due to policy changes, cool so I adjusted my account. Yesterday I had a similar altercation with a manager by the name of Preston telling me in the middle of my workout I need to prove identification to presume my workout at lifetime. Not only is this one of the rudest experiences I have been through at a place I have been paying monthly fees to for over 13 years but this lifetime in general has made my decision for me and my family and I that we are going to be glad to switch our membership over to any other gym that actually wants us there. I'm not sure where you guys go from there but your staff has no right to ID me at the door like they are TABC, I hope you guys get it figured out with your staff I guess I'll be having my license on hand in my future workouts there until I switch gyms. read more

I concur with the negative review of staff. First, I'll say that this gym has a ton of amenities which can really draw you in. But if you're looking for just a gym with great equipment, you should look elsewhere because they do not offered a shred of customer service and you can get the same thing for a fraction of the price. My girlfriend went to cancel our memberships in July, 2017. The representative told her our accounts would cancel on 8/6/2017. She specifically asked about my membership in which the representative again confirmed it would cancel on 8/6/2017. Dues were not only deducted from my account in August but they went up an additional $25.00. I called and they said this was a mistake and I would be refunded, which never happened. Then dues were taken out again in September! I called immediately and was told my membership was never cancelled. Apparently I was moved to a separate membership weeks after joining (in early June 2016) and my joint membership with my girlfriend was cancelled in June 2016. I wasn't aware of this and it didn't make sense as it was more expensive so we lost money to do this. I was told that both representatives were referring to this old membership and there was no way for them to know I had another membership, which seems odd to me. Especially because the representative I spoke to in September had no trouble finding this out. After multiple calls, an hour hold and an hour conversation, Jared in Member Services offered half of a refund of the $200.00+ that was taken out of my bank account. I told him this was unacceptable and that I would be contacting corporate. Jared then told me that he may not be able to refund me anything if I called corporate. I then received a lower refund than I was promised and I had to contact them again to get the full amount promised. The general manager, Trystan, has not been helpful either. I believe it was an honest mistake on the communication error (on their part) but I am appalled at their lack of accountability and service recovery. So essentially I was told my membership was cancelled but Life Time continued to charge me for this membership for two additional months. They only agreed to refund one month and held over my head that if I escalated this to corporate that they may not be able to refund me at all. I was told they aren't responsible for what their representatives say, simply what I sign. They don't believe in customer service and they are greedy. Sure, you'll get a heated pool but I'd rather use the same equipment elsewhere for a fraction of the price without the unnecessary amenities. read more

Not worth the money. It's a great facility with lots of space. You will almost never have to wait for a machine. Lots of lockers and a really nice pair of pools. I have to say I can't recommend this gym highly enough. It has several great amenities that other gyms don't have, including free towels, free lockers (just have to use your membership key to unlock/lock) and as many times as I've been, there has NEVER been a wait for a treadmill/elliptical. It's a very spacious gym and the machines are spaced well so you're not feeling like you're in a sweat factory. The classes are amazing! They have everything from kettebell workouts, to kickboxing, to yoga. The bathrooms and locker rooms are always kept very clean. The spa is also to die for! I can honestly say I got a better 50-minute massage at the Lifetime Spa than I got in 60 minutes at Massage Envy. Two examples of great experiences I had: 1. I'm NOT interested in a gym that's going to tell me I need to lose 20 pounds and tell me "this is what you would look like if you weighed 20 pounds lighter." I'm also not interested in a gym who is going to be on my back (ahem, Gold's Gym) about trying to get me to join their gym, sign up for personal training, get a free nutritional assessment, etc. Those are all decisions I would like to make on my own, taking into account what I really need and how much money I can spend. Getting a membership with Lifetime was a breeze. I told the guy working with me that I wasn't really interested in any "extras" and he didn't even mention it again. Some people might say that would make a bad salesperson, but to me, it meant that he was actually listening to what I was saying, and trying to get me the right membership for my wants/needs. I LOVED that! 2. One day I accidentally left my ipod on the cardio machine I used and didn't realize until the next day that I left it there. When I went the next day and checked Lifetime's lost and found, they had it! Yahoo! If I could rate Lifetime a tad less than 5 stars, I probably would, but only due to the price of membership. I actually got a discount for being a young professional when I first signed up, but have had to drop my membership since due to not being able to afford it. I understand that with the membership comes a TON of amenities (2 pools including an outdoor pool, sauna, rock climbing wall, daycare for those with kids), but I just wasn't interested in any of those. I wish there was an option to just pay for the gym part of it or just pay for the classes. If they did that, I might have to come back! :) read more

Please don't let the name fool you. This is not a gym... It's a spa/daycare/zoo that happens to have workout equipment. I have had gym memberships all my life and I have to say this has by far been the worst gym experience I've ever had. I'm a former gymnast so I've been working out and training all my life so I know my way around a gym. One of my coworkers had asked of I would be her workout partner seeing as how she has never really been to a gym before. I agreed and I signed up here at lifetime. Don't get me wrong the facility is great, however the staff and the policies here absolutely ruin the gym. On the very first day I was working out here with my coworker I was approached by two trainers and told that I had to stop what I was doing because I was "training" my coworker and that was against their policy.....what!? What is the point of a workout partner then?? I got a very insecure vibe from the trainers so I can only assume that they believed that I was detracting from their business. Nevertheless it totally embarrassed my coworker and put the worst taste in my mouth. The next few times we worked out here those same trainers would walk up and down and follow us to make sure that I was not "training" her. I have never felt so uncomfortable in a gym. Not to mention the other 5 pairs of workout partners that were not said one word to. When I confronted the people at the front desk about this they acted like I was crazy and totally wrote me off. I was actually really hurt by this. Im not even going to go into how many children are at this gym because that's a whole other rant. But long story short good facility, horrible staff and ridiculous policies. I would pass on this gym especially since there are so many smaller gyms like Pure Austin Fitness that really make you feel wanted and that support you in your efforts to better yourself. read more

Very disappointing Last year I joined lifetime fitness and paid for a personal trainer. I decided to go with an elite trainer and paid top dollar. Ricky Dodge was the trainer assigned to me and in the process of working with him I tore my rotator cuff and had to go through major shoulder surgery- was out of work for 2 weeks and unable to drive for 6 weeks. It turns out the Ricky had me doing exercises that were not proper and is the reason for my injury. I was appalled that he never once checked back in with me after finding out that he injured me- zero empathy. To top it off- LifeTime refuses to refund the training dollars that I did not use (their response was that I could use it for future training sessions). As if I'm ever going to train at Lifetime again. I've escalated this to local management and also their CEO- with no response. Beware of Lifetime! Terrible establishment and borderline criminal. read more

It's nice gym if you can ever use the squat rack and free weights. Constantly has classes taking those up at prime times.

So this rating goes to this particular Lifetime, not the whole business. I had worked at a lifetime in Flower Mound and management couldn't have been better. HOWEVER the management here is terrible and for the price you pay you expect to be treated with at least an ounce of respect. The past year I had been dealing with medical issues that required me to stay away from the gym, which was a bummer because I am big on fitness, so my membership was put on a medical hold and I was told not to worry about coming back until I was better. Turns out my condition got worse and I moved back to Dallas to live with my parents, I returned in August for school and upon returning I checked my bank account when dealing with student financial aid. Turns out lifetime canceled my medical hold and had been charging me for 4 months. I was worried and I assumed I would just call and have them refund me over the mistake since even at this time I was still not ready to go back to a gym. They end up telling me if I want a refund I need to bring in a doctors note, I do just that. After taking 2 weeks to get back to me, they then tell me my note wasn't sufficient enough and they need another one. I am annoyed but I bring in another doctors note. They take another 2 weeks, and it is now September and they charge my account AGAIN. And the manager, Adam Hambleton, is blatantly ignoring my phone calls and emails. He had the front desk keep me on hold for an hour and a half, and then I hung up and called back, to be told 'we won't put you on hold again, we will get adam' and I am immediately put back on hold for another 45min until I hang up. In my frustration I have my mother call, and she immediately gets put through, to be told by Adam Hambleton that 'your son isn't really sick' How dare he, I have been suffering from a MRSA infection that almost killed me, gave me scalded skin syndrome over a large part of my body. And has to this day left me weak and not back to my old self. I ended up having to call corporate headquarters who ended up fixing the issue instantly, and I then get a sarcastic email from Adam saying 'sorry to hear it took so long to get this figured out!' I have never been treated like this ever and I can't imagine why you would want to go to a place run by people who are just terrible human beings. Rant over read more

I have a horrible taste in my mouth from this gym. It's beautiful and I wanted to love it, but the staff here really ruined the place for me. The front desk "welcomers" are anything but welcoming. No smiles, annoyed looks because your arrival interrupted their conversation reviewing last night's escapades, and little help if you actually need it. The trainers preen in front of mirrors and remind me of the ultra-persistent jewelry vendors I met on the beaches of Puerta Vallarta, constanting trying to pressure you to give in to them. I worked out with a trainer for an hourly rate that would equal over 3 hours of training at many other gyms. Apparently she was a level 5? Even still, this level 5 paid so little attention to me that she didn't even notice I was blacking out. Yes, she did know I was sick and DayQuil/NyQuil-ing it, but was so upset over two previously missed sessions (from work, see previous review) that she thought I was trying to get out of yet another one. I understand being jaded from dealing with lazy people, but I was always at the gym, working on whatever homework she'd given me and, on the session in question, my heart rate jumped up to 175 in less than 5 minutes. Just to clarify, I typically need to sprint for a bit before I hit 145-ish. When I finally put my foot down, she freaked out with worry and forced a knife-full of crunchy peanut butter down my throat (without my water). A friend of mine had an issue with this same trainer trying to pressure her into scheduling 4-sessions a week with her when my friend could only afford 1. After consistent pressure, my friend decided not to train with her at all, only to discover that the trainer charged her card for the sessions anyway. Very classy. It's a very nice, very clean gym, but the value of most places come from the people. I'm sure there are some wonderful people there, but I only seemed to deal with the other ones. read more
