A Lifetime of Inflexibility
First, I would like to begin by acknowledging the facility is really cool; with rock walls, pools, and workout facilities. I began working out last November with the ATX50 program at RunTex. This program specifically caters to people who have 50+ pounds to lose and is awesome! The one downside is that it's all outdoors. Admittedly, the Texas heat drove me indoors. I thought I would join Lifetime for the summer with my kids and husband, so they could enjoy the cool facilities.
The family membership is about the same as my first car payment, almost $200 per month. I joined the T.E.A.M weight loss program at an additional cost in an attempt not to lose any momentum. It was expensive, but I had been reinvigorated by my new exercise routine and it was really important to me to keep it up.
While I have always found the staff to be friendly and helpful, I began to notice a few problems right away. For example, while using the ladies room facilities, I attempted to lock the door of my stall. The cover to the lock was missing, but I was able to slide my finger into the mechanism to make the door lock. Regretfully, my finger slipped and was sliced by the metal. I went to the help desk to report the problem and obtain some antibiotic cream and a bandaid. Upon reporting the problem, the young woman exclaimed, "They haven't fixed that yet? You're like the third person to cut her finger on that in the last few months." I encouraged her to report the issue to their maintenance and get it fixed and asked if I needed to fill out an accident report. She didn't have a clue what I was talking about, but offered a piece of paper for me to write what happened. I went in search of someone a little more informed. I was told a form existed, but no one seemed to be able to put their hands on it. The second woman had me write my information on a different form. While everyone was very kind, I never received an apology, which I thought was a bit odd, but no big deal. I called the next day and followed up with the GM of LFT. I had to call several times before reaching him and he never returned any of my messages. After finally reaching this gentleman, whose name escapes me, I don't think it would have been possible for me to feel like a less important person. He informed me the bathroom stall had been fixed, but was completely dismissive of the information that his staff didn't seem to be aware of what to do when a client was injured. Again, no apology and no warm fuzzies.
I'm a pretty tough nut, so for me this is just something I notice, not really internalize. It does slightly diminish my experience.
Moving on. My son is only 9, and therefore has to stay in the childcare facility while I work out. One night a week, they offer rock climbing for the kids. The class fills up so you have to sign up on a sign up sheet. Here's the hitch. You have to sign up in person. You can't call. It is recommended that you sign up an hour before to get a place in the class. The class starts at 5:30, so you have to be there by 4:30 to guarantee your kid a spot. Um, I work. I asked, can I call in at 4:00 and have you put my son on the list? I can't leave an hour early. The answer was, "No ma'am. You have to be here in person." How about email or an online form? "No ma'am. This is our policy. You have to be here an hour to an hour and a half early in person." Now envision me going back and forth with an 18-year-old explaining the level of inflexibiity for working parents....dead eye stare, then an offer to let me speak with her manager. Okay thanks! Talking to the manager, I got the same message. Basically, you are welcome to have your children participate in our programs as long as you do not work or have a REALLY flexible schedule and can leave whenever you feel like. Sorry son. No rock wall class for you.
I've experienced other working family limitations, such as the limited pool hours for kids, limited rock wall, etc. I chose to continue to go to the gym because I was excited to be getting healthy.
T.E.A.M. Weight Loss - First some good feedback. Trey and Shan were great. Very joyful and supportive. However, the overall program is not really designed for people who are more than 20-30 pounds overweight. I am more than 100 pounds overweight, and have to take care not to injure myself. This requires a level of expertise that I do not have. After a few weeks in the program, I injured my knee doing squats. I am still in physical therapy trying to change my way of standing and walking to prevent future, worse injuries. I was a bit disappointed, as I did not experience a single injury while working out with the Run Tex folks. The problem with my knee has been ongoing and persistent.
