My co-workers and I work next door to Library Square. We have been coming back at least twice a week after work for months now and will continue to come back for another year until our jobsite is done. If anyone asks me where they can go enjoy a relaxing drink and meal, i send them to the library because of great employees like Jenn and Micaela. I came here for 90's night. Yes, I love 90's R&B, but that is ALL THEY PLAYED. There are a lot more 90's songs than just R&B. Blah. Bland. Boring. Where was DJ Ana? All the young girls screaming when N'Sync came on really made me feel like punching them in the face. They were what.. 5 years old? Also, I felt so old. I'm really not that old, but being around 19-25 year olds made me feel like I should have been hanging at a jazz club (which is probably where we should have gone). Where do all the older people go clubbing/dancing? Clearly not at Library Square. The drinks were good though, so that's good? And I still had a great time with my friends as we picked out all the drunken girls in all their short mini skirt dress whory glory. P.S. maybe it's because I'm practical, but girls why you be wearing 4 inch heels you can't even walk in? You look dizzumb. I couldn't even get on the dance floor if I tried, it was so packed. I looooove me Mostly I love me some nachos with lots of toppings because if I wanted to eat a bag of tortilla chips I`d hit the grocery store not the local pub. i work in Library Square so naturally I had to check the pub out. The Nachos were AWESOME! tons of cheese, fresh jalapenos. Tasy guacamole (which no extra charge for once!) The waitress was friendly and helpful. I had a two for one coupon, and she didn`t get all lame after she knew I had it like most servers do. She even suggested we fill out the service questionaire so that we could get a free ten buck gift card mailed out to us! AWESSSSSOME I love free food dollars. The decor is pretty normal for a pub, just reminded me of a cactus or earls so nothing to over the top. I recommend it for a lunch break, although be prepard to spend a few dollars becasue the menu isn`t exactly cheap. read more

There's something satisfying about sipping wine in the shadow of the coliseum-esque Public Library. This spot is a bit of a chameleon: I've enjoyed a quick lunch here, after-work drinks, as well as late-night clubbing. Yes, all in the same spot. I like the crowd that the Library Square Public House attracts. It's less overrun than venues on the Granville strip but enough people go to still make it a fun night out. Service can be a bit hit-or-miss, but there is generally a good selection of beers on tap. During game season, I fear, the bar can use its morphing skills to become too much of a sports bar for my liking. Personally, I find TVs buzzing in every corner distracting and it splinters the social atmosphere of drinks with friends. One vote here to turn off the tube, please. read more

Chalk up everything to do with Donnelly to good advertising. They'd be nothing without their artificially inflated 'hype'. Expensive-tasteless food, expensive barely beyond well drinks and ignorant door-staff. I'd love it if the management cracked a whip on the clowns that work outside these places. Their position is not a 'power-trip' they're to ensure there are no weapons entering the bar and they don't go over capacity. Went there after tonight's Canuck game. It wasn't overly busy as it was a Monday night. The server in the red/pink dress that was taking care of the section near the pinball machine didn't ask us if we wanted anything but ensured the 3 dudes next to us were properly taken care of. Maybe they were in her section before, but she was pretty adamant to serve and flirt with them rather than address the full row of people playing games. Fair enough. Telling her that the woman's washrooms were flatulantly sprayed with diarrhea was ineffective and I felt brushed off. I am torn on this review. I watched the Canada/Swiss hockey match here and had a blast. The place was full of people, a great environment to watch, plus a lot of great looking women. The wait staff was incredibly good looking and fun to chat with - plus Budweiser girls were passing out free beers. The problems...cover charges that vary with the time, pitchers of beer at $19, and single beers at $8.50. From what all the guys said when I went - Library Square Public House was raising their prices during the Olympics which is pretty lame. I understand making money, but I definitely couldn't afford more than one or two pitchers. Our awesome waitress (i think her name is Chelsea) was definitely the highlight of the afternoon! read more

Decent place for dinner and drinks, if you can manage to find a table. BLTA sandwich was really tasty and yam fries were great (but regular fries were just okay). Beer comes in a footed glass which is odd, plus it's served in an unusual (14oz) size. Was a decent experience but wouldn't rush back. Note that if you're planning on using your Entertainment coupon, it can't be an 'event' night - but an event night is at management's discretion. So though we parked across the street and paid for 'non-event' parking, and though there was no football/hockey/soccer game or trade show on, we weren't allowed to use the coupon. An unusual atmosphere hidden beside the best and most library ever! My boyfriend and I arrived during appy hour so we enjoyed lesser cost beer (yay!) followed by abusing an entertainment book coupon "buy one entree get one free". We had the "Bangers and mash" and the "Shepards pie". Food so incredible and grandmotherly amazing that I'm STILL thinking of how great it was over a week later. Psst peeps this place is AWESOME. Normally I expect a nice and polished experience from the Donnlley Group chain, but this place is just awful. The waitresses are less than attentive and service is slow and inconsistent, Myself and a group of friends were there for dinner a few weeks back, and none of us had a good experience. Despite repeated drink orders being places, only one round made it to our table. 45min after our first drink order, some of the subsequent drinks we ordered began to arrive. I'd say one of the better Donnelly restaurants but still your average pub food (good fries). Great location to grab a bite before a game, concert, or show as it's in the middle of 3 main venues. Well known for 90's Night every Friday but if you want to avoid the crazy lineups, get there before 8pm for a drink/bite and get stamped. That way you can come back later at any time and just get in right away...plus no cover. When I frequented this location last, we were actually sitting outside and it was super windy so I asked our server if they had any blankets. The answer was no but she offered up her own sweatshirt that I borrowed. That is 2 thumbs up for service! This pub has a decent selection of craft beer and a good although small menu. The beer menu is a good mix of local and international craft beer although they do not seem to serve pints but sleeves and the price is a bit high. I do not remember if they call them a pint though. I haven't gone out to a club in a really long time, so this was a good transitional place to start. It's a lounge/ restaurant during the day but by 10pm the music is thumpin and the beats are droppin. Last night we were here for a friends birthday, the place was packed by 11pm and the dance floor was just a mass of people rubbing and grinding each other. The only negative is that the dance floor, or dance pit (because its below ground level) is really small so there was a lot of elbowing and fighting for some movement space. We actually came here pretty early so we could all lounge, eat and catch up. The food was pretty good! Me and some friends shared some sliders, which were ok, but I've definitely had better else where. For my main I ordered the prosciutto and Bree sandwich with fries. The sandwich was delicious and toasted to perfection, with dripping Bree and savory prosciutto, topped with lettuce and tomatoes. The fries were made of large real cut potatoes and were seasoned well. They had a few different drink specials on, and you would think specials were more affordable, but I didn't think they were here. I guess I don't know what is expensive and inexpensive anymore. Two and a half stars. I can't say that I was all that impressed either time I went here. The service was slow, the food was not that great, the drinks were certainly not cheap (even the specials), and the dance floor was incredibly lacking. Both times I've been there have been for friends' birthdays. We get there early, grab a bite to eat, and then order a few drinks and wait for the 80's or 90's night tunes (depending on what night you go) to come on. The food was a let down each time. I had a chicken burger the first time on a stale bun and fish and chips the second time (well, I guess you could call it something like that...) Also, the dancing (if that's what you're going for) is not that great. The dance floor is awkwardly positioned and doesn't really inspire people to move around a lot. Went for lunch today and had the worst dining experience ever. Menu has about 4 items on it and the tvs are super loud. When we finally ordered, we waited about an hour for our food to come, during which time we saw numerous tables that had arrived after us get served. Now we all know that servers make mistakes- maybe she forgot to put our order in, but she would look at us and walk away. Not even once coming to say 'sorry for the long wait' or 'oops'. She literally avoided our table. Finally the manager (I think) came round and said our food would be out momentarily. Yeah, like another 15 minutes. When he brought it, I said you know we've been waiting for about an hour. He actually said 'no I didn't know, but I do now.' And he walked away. That was it. We got our bill, the server again barely acknowledged us, and we left. Average food, good beer selection all completely negated by the terrible, unprofessional service. Boo. Major Olympic let down at Library square.... always wanted to come here to cheque out their large screen TVs and watch the games... but no more. Yes many things have changed during the games - like increased food prices, automatic gratuity charges, condensed menus, but I expect the service to still be on par average. The waitress who served me and my two guy friends only offered the two of them menus and not me.. and then also forgets my drink order but get theirs bang on.... she was slow and rude, and lack of service throughout the whole night. When the bill game, there was a 20% automatic gratuity where we were not notified about... and even worse, I found out the 5 friends who were eating with us the whole time, who had gotten a bill from a previous waitress earlier in the night had an 18% gratuity!!!!!!!!! When did the automatic gratuity change throughout the night? That is absolutely absurd! Since service was so terrible, we didn't sigh to the automatic gratuity, but actually subtracted from the total. I could be wrong but I heard that it's the law that they have to notify you or else you do not have to oblige. read more

4 Star for Brunch until 4pm! We came here purely for the patio area as we had the pooch with us on a nice hot sunshiny day. The place was dead but they they had a great seating area outside so we stayed. We quickly set a trend as after we sat down more people ended up doing the same thing and of course they all had to stop by and say hi to the little dog. That dog can just bring the customers in for this place. They should maybe consider him being their mascot to gain more afternoon patrons. We sat down, ordered our drinks and then looked at the menu and I was amazed to see that they serve brunch until 4pm. I love me some good brunch! Well, I got my Kronenbourg in a pint glass this time, for $5 (Heineken was also on special for the same price). So that's good. The pastrami sandwich was actually pretty good, but a small-ish sandwich and a tiny order of fries was $15 incl tax and tip, which to me is just too much. Service was ok. The waitress was prompt and friendly, but when other staff walked by and we needed something, they said, "I don't work this section" instead of "I'll tell your server". Also, get here early if there's a hockey game on (especially if there's one in town, since Library Square is near the arena), because it got real crowded real fast. Went to checkout this place tonight ! It was a complete let down !! My friends were already inside and I was just 15 mins behind them. The bouncer would not let me join my friends and I would have to wait in the 1 hr line up. I had to pay $20 to the bouncer then another $15 to get in. The girl accepting cash at front door was rude. Did not even make eye contact or smile, just kept flirting with the guy beside her. The drinks were watered down. The were leftover drinks with puke in them. The only thing good was the music everything else was a fail. Honestly, it was such a let down paying $35 to get into a club I did not want to spend any more money on drinks. I've only been here once, early evening and i was quite impressed. The Beer list is good, the seating inside is comfortable, although it did get slightly hot. Not sure if the conditioning was off or if they just didn't have any. The server took a while to take our orders, but that doesn't usually bother me as long as the service afterwards is fine, and it definitely was in our case. She was friendly, professional and super cute ( Nicole, if i'm not mistaken ). I ordered a salad ( don't remember the exact name ), but it was pretty good. Overall, a very good place. Four stars, four words: 80s night on Saturday! We ended up going too early, hoping to secure a great table close to the dance floor. And the place was already packed, standing room only, because it was showing a UFC match on PPV! The place was totally packed with 20-something men watching oiled, muscled fighters grapple suggestively. We left and returned later. The bouncer made an exception for us an gave us tickets to come back so we wouldn't have to pay the $5 cover twice. That was nice :) Upon our return the place had totally transformed! 90s night!! The music was okay - but the 90s night in Victoria had a better vibe. The dance floor is awkwardly placed. Theres a path that goes right through it and as you're dancing there are constantly people trying to elbow their way through the crowd to the other side. If you go before 9, you don't have to pay cover. We arrived early and managed to snag a table. We ordered some fries which were pretty good. Our waitress was friendly and was constantly checking up on us. Drinks were expensive, but the bartenders were really nice. There is a coat check, but its hidden way in the back by the washroom. Trying to find the place was interesting - who would have thought there would be a bar right next to a library?! Will go back to try their food menu, but probably not to 90s night again. read more

I'm very torn how to rate this. I went to watch the soccer game/the Stanley cup playoffs. They were showing both. Score. Arrived about 5pm, it wasn't busy. Ordered a sandwich and a cider. The BLAT (bacon, lettuce, avocado, tomato) was decent. Not blow me away, but good. The Merridale cider was local, delicious, and under $6 for a pint. We stuck around until 80's night started. The DJ's were decent, but didn't play requests (or at least didn't play them before we left at 1:30am), and clearly, didn't know/care (more likely care) about actually playing 80's as the music veered through different decades. But the service. Oh, the service was really BAD. Except for a bartender who I found really friendly (Thanks bartender #4 from London) all the table service was atrocious. That being said if I'm back in town on a weekend, I'd consider giving 90's night a try before dismissing completely. read more

To fully express my love for 90's night, I planned to come here last Friday for my birthday. I made a party reservation through their website and promptly received a message back, saying that we were on the list. With a birthday reservation, you get 2 free covers (one for the birthday person and one for a friend) and just need to be there by 10pm. We ended our pre-bar event early and so headed here at 8:30. No lineup in sight and not even a bouncer at the door to check ID. We found a wonderful section up by the arcade games/pool table, were we had a full view of the bar and close access to the dance floor. The only downside was when people decided to play pool, we were asked to move a lot. Why put a pool table in such a small area?? A friend arrived shortly after 9 and so I was able to use my free cover offer and in she came. Another arrived around 9:30 and found that the guest lineup was longer than the regular one, though was quickly let in. While at the bar, I tried their short rib sliders, which were fabulous. Short ribs in gravy-ish sauce, with swiss cheese and truffle aioli. The buns were super soft and it worked well as a dinner substitute. That being said, they were also $11. Yikes considering the plate only consists of three burgers. The music was fabulous as always and the place definitely gets packed. Around 9:30 there were people everywhere and while the dance floor was slow to get going, it was definitely full by the middle of the night. Another wonderful night, remembering the songs we danced to in elementary and high school. Aka an excellent way to pretend you're not actually a year older. read more
