1.0 star rating 12/16/2022 Ask for a quote on a battery. Was told $159 then got the bill at $199. After asking the owner about the quote versus the bill, he did not accept any responsibility for misquoting the battery. In fact, he said he would be happy to put the old battery back in. I'm sure he would have still wanted me to pay the labor. Had to wait 30 minutes for a 5 minute job. I asked up front if they could do it right away and was told yes. I ask the bill to be sent up front so I could go ahead and pay right away. I was ignored. Then the owner was badmouthing another client where he had buried a car and didn't understand why the guy would leave. If you hate clients, or don't know how to include labor in your quotes, you are in the wrong business. There are plenty of other places to take my business. I won't be back. Then I go online to see what someone else would charge for the same battery. $125. RIP OFF ARTIST. read more

AVOID! There are a lot of service stations around here, pick any one other than this if you want anything beyond just a re-fuel. I left work early one Friday to get my oil changed, turned up about 45 mins before their oil service ended, and was told to come back another day - there wasn't enough time. The guys were just sitting around doing nothing. Stupidly, I came back the next morning and asked for an oil change. The person's reply was "well... what kind of car is it" aka "is it an easy job". He was young and completely disinterested. I have a common make of car so that was no big deal. Twenty mins later or so it was done, yay, so I paid and left. About 60 miles driving later the whole engine was putting out smoke - I looked under the hood and the oil cap hadn't been replaced. Nice job, guys. Nice job. I had to go buy degreaser and clean up the whole engine. Fun. I spent 10 minutes of my life adding this business just so I could write this 1-star review. Don't let my effort be in vain - avoid this place! (Also, on Sunoco's website "McLean" is listed as "MC LEAN" and "Chain Bridge Rd" as "CHAINBRIDGE RD". They can't even get that right!) read more

This Sunoco is large and it has three sets of six pumping stations! Its A rainy day in Virginia but the carport over all of the pumping station is awesome! Thanks Sunoco It has the potential for getting really crowded but I've never seen a huge line even though it is located on a very busy intersection. There is a Shell gas station around the corner so that might be why this location ever gets crowded. It's so big and clean and the market is also nice and clean and well organized. Don't go here for safety inspections, especially if you are FEMALE. After noticing at the last minute (of course) that my safety inspection was about to fail and I was leaving for vacation the very next day, I came here for a safety inspection. They failed me on stuff I SHOULD NOT HAVE FAILED (I checked with my personal mechanic and my car inclined hubby). I went here to get inspected, and my car didn't pass. The mechanic showed me that my struts were leading fluid and had to be replaced. At that point, Phil came over and said he would help me. He called their supply guy and said it would be $235 for each of the Struts. He told me if I got my own, that their mechanics would install them. So I found them for $80 each on Amazon, and saved over $300 :) Besides being helpful, he was very nice and took the time to explain my options. Phil and Sunoco Service now is my go-to place if I need any diagnosis of the car. They did not try to sell me anything that wasn't absolutely necessary and gave advise on if it was worthwhile to fix given the conditions/value of my car. The only downside is that because they were always busy, phone follow up is a bit lacking (I had to call to follow up despite a promised phone call), which actually would lead delay of the job completion (as they would want to talk/follow up to determine next step). Fortunately I had the luxury of being in the walking distance from them, so the delay did not cause too much of a hassle. read more

I can do just about anything that doesn't require a lift, hoist or more than one set of hands BY MYSELF. However, they failed me on things that were clearly working just fine! I originally brought my car here to have it repaired because it failed inspection. That was when I met Phil. He was fantastic. He was very friendly and explained everything in detail. Not too long after that I was there to get my oil changed, and mentioned a problem I was having with the coolant system. I had received a quote from another mechanic to have it repaired, but it was going to be too much. I actually thought that was going to be the end of my car. Not only could I not afford to buy another car, but I didn't want to get rid of mine. Phil convinced me to let his service team take a look at it to determine the exact cause of the problem. They found the cause and gave me a quote. It was much less than what I had been told before. Needless to say, I am still driving the car today. Phil just shakes his head when he sees me drive up. Since then, I have always taken my car there to get it serviced and repaired before going anywhere else. Phil and his team have been great. NEVER go here for anything beyond gasoline. There is a reason there are never cars lining up here for safety inspections. This place did not pass my car for two very minor reasons and gave an estimate of over $1000 for repairs. I took my car to another station in the area, got an estimate for $250 for the same repair and was told that my car should have passed inspection in the first place. I will be happy to see this place close down! This is the Sunoco right off of Chain Bridge RD and Old Dominion Dr. There gas prices are pretty cheap, but I wouldn't be surprised if they water it down... read more

These guys are great! I am not understanding the bad reviews. The lines are short, the gas is less expensive than the rest of McLean, and Phil (the super mechanic) is treated like everyone's family member by loyal customers. He is clearly extremely knowledgeable, pleasant and an honest guy. I sat at the shop for a few hours waiting for my car to get done, and I saw him repeatedly be greeted like a long lost brother. The mechanics are also meticulous. They wear gloves, are clean and are very careful with your car. I trust these guys! read more

I had limited time and needed an inspection so instead of going to my regular place I stopped by Sunoco. I drive by there a lot and never see any cars worked on so I figured it'll be fast. They failed my car for one item and said everything else passed and the inspection guy said he's not making any money on this so... and looked toward the mechanic who was standing there looking out the window. My flags went off so I passed on getting it repaired there and later that week I took it my regular mechanic. The mechanic and the inspection person both looked at the failed area and told me it passes inspection. I had them inspect the car and they did find the brakes didn't pass and I had them replace the master cylinder and it passed. I'll always pay when it is needed. They always have lots of cars in queue for repair and inspection and I've been going there for 10 years and never had any questionable repairs. The moral of the story is never go to a place that never has any cars in queue for repairs and always go to your regular mechanic. read more

My car decided to stop running on the freeway on the way home from DC to Pittsburgh. I was able to get it started and get it to the Sunoco Ultra Service Center. Phil was incredibly kind to me and talked me through the problem, gave me accurate information, shopped around for the part I needed, and even test-drove my car for 45 minutes after installing it, to make sure it was safe to drive home. I almost got my inspection done at my usual place. I left my car all day and they never got around to doing it. Instead of taking it back, I took it to Sunoco per a friend's recommendation. Chris told me that I did not need a tune-up or any belt changes or any of the other almost $500 in charges that the other place said. I simply needed new front tires. He even gave me the website where I could buy them directly and have them shipped. Yay!!! I am definitely a fan. I will post more when I take my other car in. read more

I'd like to thank the McLean Sonoco and especially Phil for help with a recent automotive issue. As Phil has done in the past when I brought my car in for service, Phil went well beyond the expected and typical service. I was a block or so away in McLean when I got in my car and found that it would not start. I thought it was probably due to an old battery in the code weather. However, I have a portable jump starter in my trunk. So, I hooked it up and tried jumping it. It would not start. I called Phil and asked for advice. Phil offered to walk over to where my car was (a couple of blocks) and take a look. He brought a few tools to check things with. When he arrived and asked to try to start the car, I mentioned to be careful with the key because I took out the battery from my key fob because I was going to replace the battery. The battery apparently was low because I could not remotely open the doors anymore. Once I mentioned this, Phil said that this actually was probably the problem. Cars have an anti-theft system that keeps the car from starting if the key is taken apart. I put the old battery back into the key fob (which had been working so it apparently had some energy in it still) and the car started fine. If it wasn't for Phil, I likely would have had to have the car towed to Sonoco or another service station to figure out the issue, which would have cost more time and money. There are several automotive service companies that I could have called with this problem. I called Phil at Sonoco because I have had work done there before and Phil was always very helpful, clear, and clearly is always looking out for the customer's best interests. read more

Terrific customer service during what was my first experience here (beyond getting my state inspections here the past couple of years). The requested work on my older vehicle was completed in the timeframe promised and at a fair price. But it was the great customer treatment that I received at this establishment that earns it a fifth star. I'd arrived with a book to pass the time understanding the service would take a couple of hours. As I live nearby, Phil readily offered to shuttle me home with a pick up later if needed. I took advantage of that and, while my car was being serviced, was able to make great use of the time in what was a precious day off from work. This may seem a small thing but I haven't had it offered elsewhere in this area, and it can make a huge difference for those of us one-car families who often put off car maintenance because of the inconvenience. It felt like an almost 'old fashioned' community spirit that I for one greatly appreciated. I will be back when needing further work. read more

The technicians are GREAT here, BUT: the cashier (and, by extension, the owner) is a jerk. I came for inspection, with a Valpak $4 off coupon on my phone. Inspection process was very efficient, friendly mechanic, etc. But when I went to pay, the cashier insisted that the coupon had to be printed. I offered to sign something, email the coupon to him, etc. -- no go. I asked to speak with the owner, but was told "he is very busy man." Again, these coupons are designed for smart phone use, but there was no convincing this guy. So, if you're going to use a coupon, bring a hard copy. read more

As far as my experience goes, the mechanic team there is the best. Phil has helped out my entire family and the array of issues our cars have had (Acura, Ford, Infiniti). I went in today to see him for the first time, asked for him by name, and he came right out and had me pull my car up to the bay. He then ran some scans based on the issues I told him and laid it all out for me, advised me on a starburst that I recently got on my windshield (and gave me a company he recommended), and a couple of other issues. I basically harassed him with all my questions/concerns and got straightforward, honest advice and it cost me NOTHING. He was a really big help, and one of the other mechanics even came over and gave some input. Did I mention this was at 4:00pm in the center of McLean? I don't see how anyone could give them less than 5 stars. I took my Honda to the dealer for a recall maintenance and they acted like they couldn't let me leave unless I did several thousand dollars worth of maintenance. I got away from them and later took the car to Phil at Mclean Sunoco. He went down the list from Honda and identified a few things that should be done and a lot that was unnecessary. His prices were less than 1/3 for the same repairs that the dealer wanted to do. He got them done that same day as promised and the car has been running fine ever since. I have since taken both our cars to him from time to time and each time he has identified just what needed to be done and what did not need to be done. Never have I experienced a more trustworthy and reliable service experience. In addition, the inspection services are outstanding. Always available, always fast, and just right. Not only Phil, Diego is also top flight and the rest of his mechanics are as well. Take your car to them once and you will see. What have you got to lose? read more

Avoid this place for VA Safety Inspection if you have an older car. The inspector didn't seem to like my car the minute he saw it and wasn't going to stop inspecting until he found a reason to fail it. He probably likes inspecting all the brand new Mercedes and BMWs the people in McLean normally bring him. He spent about 25 minutes on my car and 3 more cars joined the queue. Then he moved my car to another bay and put it on the lift. I have never seen this done in 25 years in VA. He decided to fail it because the frame was rusty. The VA inspection manual indicates that to fail a car for a rusty frame, the metal must be weakened to the point that the car is unsafe to drive. This is sort of a subjective item since it is difficult to tell if the metal is weakened just by looking at it. Save yourself the hassle and just go some where else for your safety inspection. read more

AMAZING! I'll never go anywhere else! My office is in McLean and while driving my dash light went off for a new battery. I stopped at Advanced Auto Parts and they ran some tests and it turns out it was the alternator. They made some calls and got me right into Sunoco's shop. They are honest, thorough and really do great work. They hooked me up with a great price for great work. I was in and out in the same day too! read more
