3/29/21 Here I am at the Citgo Gasoline Station getting my car inspected again. The shell station I normally go to is closed. The inspector named Buu H Ly had an attitude. I let that go, but I wasn't about to let him into my car without wearing a mask. I saw him driving another person's car without a face mask. The lady didn't care about him not wearing a mask, but I did for my car. Gloves wear on my mind, but that could be worse. I wiped down my car after I got my car back. This my second time here and the work I needed done went by without problems. As for the staff..., the cashier was better than LY. Overall the experience ended well, but I reccomend this place being not being your primary place of business. read more

Inspection & Emission Tests (Saturday) 1. Location: You can't miss this place as the sign of Citgo is quite huge. However, their business is quite confusing as it is in front of another business that also does car services. How I know is because I went to Citgo for the tests and my sister went to the business right behind them for the same tests, which looks like they are a part of Citgo, but they are not and from a completely different owner, which my sister also had a great experience with them as well. 2. Cleanliness: The convenient store is small and neat. 3. Service: They were nice, helpful, and wanted to keep things moving. In general, car inspectors do not work on the weekend, but I was very grateful to have found this location to have a Saturday inspection operation. The entire process took less than 30 minutes. 4. Costs: $16 for the inspection and $28 for the emission test. 5. Overall experience: It was quick, fast and easy. Side Notes: They open at 8 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. for inspections on Saturdays. read more

I like this place. A lot. I only use this place for SUPER fast emissions and state inspections. I can't say that all my past cars have been completely legal by VA standards but you know what I've never had any issues with cops regarding things that probably shouldn't have passed state inspections. Always an issue with speed :) This place is definitely "mod friendly" and they can do easy fixes fairly quickly like a burnt out tail light and the likes, as I'm sure most gas station service centers can. Gas here is consistently cheaper than elsewhere in the Merrifield neighborhood. That's what got me through the door. Despite the sort of awkward exit and entrance to the store and the lack of coverings over the gas pumps. When I needed my car's first inspection, I called around to auto service shops to find out who was cheapest. Apparently there's a standard price, but this shop offers a coupon on top of that. So, to be inspected we went. We showed up once around 2 on a Saturday and they had too many cars to take us before they closed at 3. A different time, we went around noon and the car was in and out in just a few minutes. Since the inspection went well, and they also appeared to be the cheapest for an oil change ($19.95 with a valuepak coupon I found online,) we drove up to get that done. Despite looking busy and having about 5 people standing around awkwardly in the parking lot and sitting in the 2 folding chairs next to the door that constitutes the 'waiting area,' they said they could get it done quickly. At one point, the guy came out and told me there would be an extra $7 charge because my car (2013 Chevy Cruze) uses a *canister* oil filter. Okay, I said. When they drove up and had the paper showing the charges, there were some discrepancies beyond that $7 materials charge I agreed to. They charged $2.something for labor and $8 for materials on top of the $19.95. This is not a huge discrepancy-- a little over $3, but I still asked about it, because it wasn't completely in alignment. The guy argued with me big time and tried to explain it away, but the numbers still didn't add up. I just ended up agreeing to it, because what else could I do, but I won't be back for service here. If it looks like I can get in and out quickly, I may still go for the cheap gas, though. read more

Interesting..... apparently you either get great service or horrible service at this gas station. "Under new management" and the coupons in the valupak keep them coming back for more! I've rarely come across blatant bait and switch shops like this one. Definitely NOT mod friendly in my experience (more on this in a second). I admit in the past I kindly ask my sister to bring my cars in for inspection and emissions when the time comes (in exchange for food and a super nice little brother). This year I decided to tackle it myself and took one in for inspection/emissions. They failed me for the car being too low. the suspension is tight, has no float and does not touch the car when compressed. I was highly annoyed they were making up violations (ride height is not a VA inspection requirement) and thus wasting my $12 for inspection ($4 off coupon to get $12 for NOTHING!). I told them to forget about the emissions then i'll just pay the $12 before they magically fail me for emissions. "I can't cancel it, I already started the program" is what the guy said. after repeating myself multiple times I don't want emissions the computer magically let him cancel it. On a positive note, inspection guy was the only human tool in the garage. the rest of the guys were very friendly. I drove to the Sunoco up the street (Hartland and Lee Hwy) and the car passed with no issue. I told him about the other inspector and he said he doesn't know what he is doing (edited to be polite) Tips: 1) If you're a female, you will likely have no problems. 2) Don't be fooled by "free of charge". there is a chance are you didn't need it in the first place and it might be a way to get customer loyalty. read more

I had quick service replacing a valve stem on a tire. Some @ hole cut the valve stems on two tires from my car in a public parking deck. I had replaced one tire with a spare and brought the damaged one to a tire shop. They wanted $20+ to replace the valve stem. I then went to the CITGO and they did it in 15 minutes for $12.12 Quick and courteous! read more

I came here to get an initial inspection and emissions test for a new car bought out of state. After doing the inspection he noted my fog lights would fail VA, despite being passed in MD. Instead of failing me, or charging me, he did the inspection free and recommended I fix it before tagging in VA. This advice (which was legal bc it was an out of state car with temp tags) saved me a lot of hassle, and $15. read more

Citgo exceeded my expectations. I came in to get an emissions test and to have my freon topped off because the air conditioning had stopped working. My first pleasant surprise was when the mechanic came in to tell me he had to add brake fluid to make the "Brake" light go off. The brake light had been on for years and I had gotten used to it: my car was passing inspections and I had been told by two shops that it was probably electrical and that I could get a diagnostic done for $100+. The mechanic just went ahead and fixed it (letting me know to make sure I was okay with it), and just $2.99 in brake fluid added to my bill. I've had AC problems looked at annually for the past few years and they've always said it just need more freon. This was the first shop to tell me I had a leak, and they showed me with a UV light where it was coming out. I went for the repair; time will tell if it pays off but I appreciate that they looked into it. read more

We had our brake pads changed here and ever since they have been awful and squeaky. I gave them the benefit of the doubt and said nothing, but just a couple of months later they are sounding worse and worse (even worse than before they were changed!) and so I went back WITH the receipt from their station and told them that they must have installed the pads wrong and asked if they could have a look. They said I should have come back earlier and that it wasn't their fault and wouldn't even look at the car and refused to fix it. To not only be bad at their jobs but to be stubborn and pigheaded and not stand by their work to boot is ridiculous. What kind of business is this? They can't even install brake pads and then they argue when you point it out to them? To be honest, this is not the first time we've had problems with them. Every time we come for an oil change they magically find something wrong with the car and want to charge you for it (problems that no other mechanic can find, somehow). Tires need to be rotated, which everywhere else does for free? That'll be $30, please. My mom busted a tire and they convinced her to change ALL of them; I wasn't with her or I would have asked for a second opinion. I wouldn't trust these guys within 30 feet of my car. I have been coming here because it's close to my house, but these are not only dishonest crooks, they are terrible mechanics. NEVER, EVER STEP FOOT IN HERE!!!! UPDATE: i am an optimist and eternal forgiver and plus everywhere was closing so I came here for a simple state inspection. They found that one of the tire studs had broken off (PS, guess where the last place that had touched out tires was? Them!) and said they would charge us almost $200 to fix it or the car wouldn't pass. They "replaced" it with a dirty old stud, that came off a few weeks later. I wouldn't even have noticed except that when I finally learned my lesson and went elsewhere to replace it this time I was surprised at how new it looked, unlike the last time it was replaced. Will I ever learn? I finally did. Do not EVER come here unless you enjoy being cheated. read more

I have been going to this Citgo for almost 3 years. They are not only courteous, they are honest. Once I had gone in to get my brake pads changed because they were squeaking. They could have just charged me for installing new ones, but he explained that they previous owner of my car had just installed cheaper pads. He said they were still good but would just squeak. Another time I asked them to get something fixed and he suggested I see if that was covered under warranty, which it was. He saved me hundreds when he could have just fixed it. That being said, he did tell me he had no problem fixing it there if I wanted it done that day. That kind of honesty keeps me coming back. They aren't like Jiffy Lube who continued to up-sell me every single time I went in for an oil change. read more

I normally only lurk for reviews online, but my experience at this location was so bad last time that I am signing up solely to leave this review. I normally go to this location at night because it is convenient for me. I normally use my card, and get out. Lately my card has been acting up, so I have to see the cashier. Two times I had great service (how hard can it be? You just authorize the transaction and I am on my way!). On 6/8/2013 at approximately 11:00 PM, I had to go see the cashier once again. He hesitated to turn around to help me, and when he did acknowledge me, I gave a friendly smile like any decent human being would, and said, "I would like to get a full tank on this card, please". He looked at my card and then back at me with an incredulous look that screamed "OH MY GOD! DON'T WASTE MY TIME, PUT THE CARD IN THE MACHINE!". He was so upset that I declined to make a purchase and just left. read more

There was someone already ahead of me and I asked if they would be willing to do the inspection and call me when it was done because I live nearby. AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE!!! Good enough of a place to fill up the tank and get annual state inspection and emission (emission in VA can be elected for 2 years interval by paying for 2 years driver's registration) done. I brought my car here to replace the headlight bulbs repeatedly since they have a penchant to blow out every few months. On more than one occasions, I caution them not to touch the bulb with their fingers to avoid heat build up on a certain part of the glass surface and in fact even brought rubber gloves for their convenience along with a resin that Advance Auto Parts gave me when I told them about the problem I was having with the shop, this is to improve electrical contacts I think. All told, after the 5th or 6th times, never offering an explanation why the problem kept recurring with my car, each time costing $30 or more depending on whether 1 or both bulbs were being replaced. So I grew tire and wary and thought if i bought some LED bulbs, that should remedy the problem since there is no filament to burn out. They did a rush job to install the new LED bulbs as they were trying to close for the day. That same night i noticed that the illumination was really weak and dim. At first I thought it was a placement issue, but then about a month or so later even the LED bulbs went kaput. I took it to another mechanic to check it out and he found out that the LED bulbs were put in haphazardly without being secured to the sockets, so it bounced around quite a bit while the car was being driven and eventually shattered the LED bulbs. Also, there were damages to the headlight fixtures where somehow they were punctured/cracked off and couldn't be repaired. I ended up having to replace the entire headlight assemblies on both side costing about $1,000. SO BUYERS BEWARE -- AVOID AT ALL COST!!! SERVICES ARE SHODDY AND WORKS ARE SUBSTANDARD -- BORDERLINE SCAMPS!!! read more

Came here for safety inspection with their $5 coupon. Waited in line behind one other person for about half an hour during which there didn't seem to be anyone doing inspection work. To make it worse, they then let someone who came in after us jump the line because they apparently knew him. No wonder they need to entice people to come in with the coupon - their service sucks!
