There's not a lot of options in Newtonmore. So I went to Letterbox. In short, stay away unless you like cold over priced bread and sawdust. And overpriced
To start the waitress asked my group if we wanted bread. I knew it was a pound per bread per person, the rest of my group did not. The waitress did not mention this. I believe that it's simply underhanded to not inform the customer that it's an additional cost. Anyway, we got the bread fine it's just a pound. BUT, you would think it would be at least a whole slice or a roll. It wasn't. It was half a slice per person (I mean half a REGULAR slice of bread) and it was COLD and served with COLD butter. How do you spread cold butter on cold bread? Not worth a pound at all. I could have gotten better bread, 6 whole rolls, at the Co-Op for 70p. So, we started our meal with a bad start already. My group had a risotto for a starter. Which wasn't a traditional risotto. The risotto that I know and understand is creamy and thick. This one was more stew like. Fine, I guess it's a different take on risotto. Also it really needed something more to counter the really earthiness of the mushrooms. For my entree I had a roasted pheasant. Now you need to know on the menu it says that the cook determines the cook of the meat unless the customer requests differently. I didn't ask for over cooked. It was the worst pheasant I've had. It was dry and hard to cut with a butterknife. A chainsaw wouldn't be enough. And it tasted like sawdust. The gravy was good but not enough to cover the sawdust taste. I did like the potatos, though that might have been because I could cut it. My friend had the same thing so I know it wasn't just mine. They also overcharged for a venison pie but we were over the restaurant already. My recommendation to the restaurant is get more staff and shorten the menu. Focus on what you are good at because more items on a menu doesn't mean it's good food. read more
