Beef with mashed potatoes and vegetables

This bar will fool you. It looks like a typical Scottish bar from the outside and inside. The secret it hides is the excellent food they offer. We heard rumors that the chef used to own a Michelin star restaurant and wanted a slower paced life in Scotland. We don't know if this is true or not. The food quality we received, however, was certainly up to very high standards. We entered and were greeted and seated immediately. I ordered a beer and my wife had cider. We enjoyed our drinks and then I ordered the lamb and my wife ordered the beef dish. Both arrived in around 20 minutes and looked and smelled great. Both were cooked perfectly and tasted wonderful. We were very pleased with our meal here.

    Scottish beef

This was one of my favorite meals on our trip! I had the Scottish beef with potatoes, veg, and brown gravy. It was superb! The meat was tender, flavorful, and very lean. I could've licked my plate clean of the gravy. Highly recommend! Ambience was also nice.

    Venison

What a pleasant surprise! Stopped in for a pint at lunch and had a five star meal! Venison with a beautiful wine sauce, potato terrine, red cabbage with a distinguished seasoning, apple and celeriac...also a Scottish beef that MELTED in my mouth with brown gravy, turnips, fresh carrots and mashed potato. This place was Michelin! Another reason I must come back to Scotland!

The Laroch (on the right) is just right for a romantic dinner.

My wife and I enjoyed a wonderful meal at Laroch the other night. We started with a bowl of mushroom soup. So flavorful and delicious! After soup, my wife had the Caesar salad with some of the braised scallops on the side. I enjoyed a bowl of venison chili and some risotto. The chili had a great consistency and interesting flavor. It was spiced just right! The risotto was warm and cheesy and just perfect for moderating the heat from the chili. Make sure you make reservations as this wonderful place is well-known and always busy.

A gem! Yelp guided us here when we were staying up the street for the night. Kind of a fancy restaurant with a classy, old pub feel. We had some beers, chatted by a fireplace and each had an incredible meal. Husband had braised pork belly and I had lamb loin chops. Our meals were melt in your mouth good and a fantastic meal we felt we'd deserved after eating a lot of grocery store food on our road trip. Service was friendly and not overbearing. Prices were reasonable and we really enjoyed ourselves.

wonderful little place in Glencoe! a notice: they do require a reservation if you plan on eating here anytime during the main travel months! the food here was wonderful and so were the drinks and desserts:) one thing to mention is that since this is a small town they have minimal staff so wait times can be longer but that didn't take away from the enjoyment of the meal or the drinks! the servers were all very young and were doing a wonderful job!

Great little pub and nice restaurant in Ballachulish. Good beer selection and there are two menus : a pub menu with salads, starters, burgers, fish, and chips (£5-15) and a higher priced, fancier rotating menu for the restaurant next door (£15-25). My fish and chips was spectacular, with homemade tartar sauce. The burgers looked great too. Kids penne pasta had homemade sauce. Will definitely go back.

I ordered the filet of wild halibut with peashoot and watercress risotto and it was delicious. I was quite surprised and a little disappointed by the serving size compared to the price. My husband opted for the lemon and thyme chicken. Again, the serving size left a lot to be desired. After the exchange rate, dinner was $112. I don't think I would come here again as the price isn't justified by the portion size or the ambiance. Also, the waitstaff were just standing around watching everyone eat which was strange.

After making reservations over a month ago, we were very excited to dine in at the Loch Leven…read moreSeafood Cafe. Location is great with views of the Loch and surrounding mountains. Our initial young waitress was very attentive and graceful throughout our dinner. Unfortunately the restaurant was out of the main courses we desired, so we both opted for medium-rare Ribeye steaks. My partner received a proper medium rare steak, while I received a steak that was medium well to well done throughout most of the steak. A small portion of the steak was medium. Ultimately the steak was unevenly and over-cooked. Confusing, since the other steak we ordered at the same time was perfectly cooked. I dreadfully had to send a steak back to the kitchen for the first time in as long as I can remember. Our young waitress was very understanding and seemed to agree when I showed her the difference between the two steaks, and said no problem we will re-cook it for you. A little while later, an older waitress came back to the table with my original steak, who expressed that the owner/chef was currently present in the kitchen, reviewed (and perhaps cooked the steak?) and disagreed that the steak was perfectly medium-rare. I was obviously shocked at this point given we had an actual medium rare steak on our table to compare it to, and the difference was obvious for anyone with normal vision and proper cooking experience. She cut into the thickest part of the steak to show me, and what was shown was medium at best, and ignored all of the overcooked rest of the steak I had cut into previously without taking a single bite. This is where things turn truly awry, disappointing, and unprofessional. The older waitress suggested I must not understand what medium rare is in the UK, since I am American. Very condescending. I had previously also received a bit of an attitude from her when asking if they had a wine pairing for the steak (they didn't), which is common when you have a £30+ ribeye on the menu. I immediately corrected her saying that I do understand proper doneness of meat (both of us have restaurant experience and are avid cooks) and it's actually a universal standard, and this was the most overcooked steak I received in the past month I had been fine dining across Scotland. I was given the option to order something else since the chef was not up to preparing a new steak, but I politely declined to order anything additional after feeling so disrespected and seriously questioning the capability of the chef at this point. I chose to split the proper medium rare steak we did receive, and finished off our evening. The steak we did eat was just average for the price. Fortunately the co-op down the street was still open and we were able to prepare an equally adequate meal at home. The fact that the owner/chef at no point came out to discuss the issue was very disappointing and lack of accountability was a bit baffling. In the end, I was rightfully not charged for the steak on the final bill, but this was easily our worst dining experience across a month of dining all over Scotland, both Michelin-starred and more low-key restaurants. I've had nothing but extremely kind service in the whole of Scotland except this establishment, and it appears this sentiment is expressed in other recent reviews. I would suggest to skip this one and consider other great options in the area with more capable cooking staff.

Please book ahead and stop asking the waitress if they have a table while holding the door open - it was a cold and blustery summer evening and she didn't have time for those who can't read the sign which already said "Sorry the restaurant is full tonight!" There is just one waitress and I only saw 2 people working in the kitchen. It would take a while before she could come over to take the order and a while longer for the food to come. We both ordered the squat lobster as starters. It was similar to the crawfish tails but the meat was more tender and sweet. I ordered entree sized scallops that comes with a salad with crispy lardons and purée - they are only available as an appetizer on the menu but the waitress allowed me doubling the size as an entree. The scallops were so sweet and cooked to perfect perfection. It came with butternut squash puree (wished there was more) and crispy lardon, cubed butternut squash and capers salad - wished there were more betterment cubes and less capers as the later made it too salty). Wished I could gave them 4.5 starts! This is the quintessential Skye experience we aimed for! A small local restaurant with locally sourced seafood!
