THIS IS THE BEST MEAL I'VE HAD IN MY ENTIRE LIFE. Located in the middle of nowhere Scotland, this small restaurant pops up along the road and sits on top of the loch (lake). They pull in fresh seafood constantly and you can tell. They have a set menu, as well as daily specials, but it truly doesn't matter what you order. We tried everyone's dish at our table and they were all 10 stars across the board. The cod with pesto was incredible. It melted in your mouth and even the pesto was clearly homemade. Stunning. The oysters were huge, the lobster was buttery, and the cod with seafood ravioli was incredible. The sauces, toppings and proteins were all cooked to perfection in addition to the quality of seafood being the best in the world. Each entree is about $20, which is more than worth it for the perfection of a meal you'll receive. Be sure to book your reservation weeks in advance -- it's known that this place rocks! read more

Make a reservation - in fact, plan your trip around when they can get you in! Delicious! Charming restaurant, sweet outdoor seating area for when the weather is nice. We were here in July (in parkas!) but it looked inviting. We started with one of the special appetizers: tiramasalata. I have a Greek restaurant near my house and I can never order this again there! This was so good. Entrees we ordered included: special seared Pollock, pasta with seafood, mussels, smoked salmon and the fish and chips (haddock). Each dish was different and so superbly flavored; delicate and yet robust. No wish-washy seafood here; this was the bomb! Cocktails were great. 10/11/2014: here's another review I've been sitting on for over 4 years...good grief! We arrived in the charming village of Fort William this day. I couldn't get enough of the seafood in Scotland. Talk about fresh. It practically jumped out of the water onto the plate. Crannog was no different; it was only that much more amazing and sat at the end of the dock on a loch and only served what they caught on the day. Like...what?!?!?! Yes, please! The venue was a lot larger on the inside than it looked from the street. It was a wet, cold night and the restaurant was nice and toasty. We were greeted by the friendliest hostess who told us we could hang our coats on the overloaded large branch-y coat tree. She led us into the dining room and the further we got into the room the more it felt like going to your family's house for a holiday meal. It was great. The ambiance was so warm and inviting as were the people seated around us. We ordered beverages and appetizers from the hostess and moments after she left our server came and greeted us. Two of the large parties near us were celebrating birthdays and included the entire dining room in the celebration by having champagne delivered to all of our tables. I've only seen things like that in movies. It was awesome! I love a place that gives you time to actually sit and drink and talk and eat your starters before delivering 5 more courses and your check to the table. We ordered a table salad that was so delicious and soup. I cannot remember what soup but it was like cream of asparagus or mushroom which I am a sucker for both. I just remember it being so rich and creamy and I did finish the bowl. We were allowed time to let things digest a bit before our entrees were brought out. I was ready to crawl onto the plate when I saw my halibut. It looked so yummy. He had the languostines which I'd never had before but were like eating a combination prawn/lobster. It was perfectly cooked and sweet and I could have eaten all of his meal, too. The service and food were out of this world. We closed down the restaurant with the two large parties. Absolutely amazing. I wish we could have eaten there for dinner but WARNING: we went in for dinner one day around 6 and the hostess told us they were booked for the next few days ......... So I made a reservation for lunch and boy I'm glad I did. We arrived for lunch and I ended up ordering garlic mussels and scallops. Both were soft and neither were rubbery. The flavored scallops were ok as I'm not a fan of salt and pepper right now but I dipped them in the garlic sauce from the mussels and I was gobbled them up :). It was worth the two day wait to have lunch there. The bread was also delicious . Very filling - I was content for a few hours. read more

This building hangs right on Loch Linne, so half the tables get a water view. It's a smallish place and apparently very popular, so good luck getting a reservation at a regular hour. I wanted a table with a loch view, and had to take a 9 pm slot. But it was worth the wait. The service was very friendly and made a nice, pleasant baseline for the whole experience. The food was excellent as well. Their famous specialty, cullen skink--a soup with smoked haddock and potatoes--is worth its reputation. My entree was a coriander-encrusted cod with a creamy bacon sauce and potatoes. I had dessert too, but I can't remember what it was. Yum yum yum. Stopped by for lunch as we drove from Glasgow to Isle of Skye. I had the two course lunch special. There were about 4 starters and 4 entrees to choose from. I had the Apple & Fennel Soup for my first course. It reminded me of a warm apple sauce. It had a good flavor to it and was a nice way to begin my meal. For my entree I had the grilled whole plaice. I've never had this type of fish before. It's served whole, face and all. It was very tender and tasted great with the capers and butter sauce. Watch out for those bones though! Overall, the food wasn't bad. The service could use some work. The "manager" had to tell our waitress to get us bread. It also took a while at the end of our meal to get our bill. We are Brazilian's who lived in Scotland about 20 years ago and are back for 2 weeks. I am very keen on good food, and consider myself very pick. And I am very positively impressed with the outstanding quality of food we are overall tasting in Scotland. Our first night towards the Highland is in Fort William, where The Crannog Seafood restaurant is. We came for dinner and were firstly amazed by the location. By the Lock, with breathtaking views of the water and mountains with some snow left on the hilltop . And then we continue to be impressed by the warm and friendly Highland service. Our waiters were very kind, adding a feeling of welcoming to our dinner experience. The food was very good, from a mixture of the daily specials and the regular menu we had the cold and hot salmon, the leek and potato soup (as starts) and the hake pistachio crushed fillet and the crannog fishcake with salad and rouille (this from the starter list bug big enough to be a main) as main courses. The wine was a good deal delicious Karrikiri Tempranillo. And for dessert (oh my God, I can't believe we did not resist it) was tbe amazing banana pudim with butterscotch sauce and ice-cream. For a 12 pound lunchtime meal, a bowl of creamy-but-light, hearty-but-not-too-filling, simply beautiful cullen skink, and two delicious fish cakes, with just the right combination of thick and light. Washed down with a Kelpie kelp beer -- so brewed because years ago, the fields of barley on the western coast of Scotland were fertilized with seaweed -- this was one of the better meals I had in the UK. I called and made us a reservation for later in the evening since that's the only time they had available. When we got there, the place was packed! We ordered the scallops to start and the salmon dish along with another baked white fish for dinner. It was all delicious and the portions were huge! I love sea food and long lunches! Always ask if you can't see want you what on the menu, they get stuff off the boast almost every day. The wine list is very good and the dining room has lovely views of the loch. The staff are lovely and every so helpful. If you can book, it get very busy. The location of the restaurant couldn't get any better - right on the water, and if you reserve ahead, I'm sure you could get a lovely loch view. On that note, if you are keen to eat here, MAKE RESERVATIONS. We walked in at 8 and were told that there were no tables until 9. Fine, we said we'd be happy to wait. Before I could suggest to my companions that we should go to a nearby pub to kill time, the hostess bluntly said, "You can't wait here." Well, we weren't planning on doing it, but thanks for the snub. When we returned at 9, we were shown to a loch view table, which was a good surprise and worth the wait. Our waitress was prompt and brought us everything we needed. The food, well, it's good, but I'm not sure if it's good enough for me to want to return. Crannog serves generous portions of fresh seafood, but done somewhat unimaginatively. For someone who loves mash, my friend left her mash behind. The fish we ordered - baked cod, seared salmon, and fried sea bass - were all very fresh and good quality, but lacking in flavour. The sea bass special was drowning in a tomato-chorizo oil, which made it a little unappetizing towards the end. The salmon wasn't exactly seared - I'd say it's more fried. Seared implies a bit of rawness in the middle, which was not the case. The skin was nice and crispy, though. Service-wise, the hostess was run off her feet and everyone in my party believes she just needs a well-deserved break. She was a bit cross with everyone, but with that busy of a restaurant and only her managing the front of house, we could see why. It took a long time for her to come to our table to take our card payments, and as soon as she came by she left again because another table was making a completely unreasonable complaint about their food. When she finally came back to take our payment, we were really antsy to leave. Needless to say, we weren't super impressed when she asked how our experience was. Overall, it's a good choice for a refined meal in Fort William. The town is lacking in good restaurants, I think, but compared to other restaurants I've been to, I wouldn't say Crannog is the best seafood I've ever had. read more

We are locals and eat at the Crannog several times a year for a nice meal out or for special occasions. It is hands down the best restaurant in Fort William. They always have seasonal menus and use local ingredients where possible. Their selection of inventive cocktails is also great. Quality is second to none and the restaurant has a great atmosphere. Always busy in the summer months but a little more relaxed in the winter. Beatiful art on the walls, local food on the plates, and a beautiful setting, what more could you ask for? read more

This place was very average - i was surprised by the rave reviews on Yelp. if you must go, stick to simple seafood dishes only! The Crab & apple timbale was a big disappointment - sounded great (I'm from California and crab, avocado & grapefruit salads are one of my faves so i wanted to try a Scottish take on it) but it was mushy and nasty. The fish cake was worse - downright disgusting The salmon main course was properly cooked and a very nice piece of fish. but even here, this place almost screwed that up by serving it on a huge pool of rather bland sauce, which could have completely overwhelmed the fish but fortunately I managed to eat around it. Service is atrocious - we had a time limit placed on us as we sat down . It wasn't unreasonable - an hour and a half, but the whole process couldnt have been managed more clumsily.. You are definitely going to be one of the pack they are getting seated, fed and dispatched so the next table can be seated. The view is admittedly great. We just returned from eating dinner here. We ordered wine and mussels for starters. Unfortunately, the inattentive waiter neglected to put that order in and rushed us to order the main meal. The main meal came out, but never the starters. Another waitress delivered the meal, and when we told her about the starters, she simply shrugged and returned our plates to the kitchen. Quickly realizing our meals would just sit there and get cold, we asked to skip the starters and just have the meal. We also ordered side salads (which were minuscule), however our same sullen waiter neglected to point out that one of our meals already came with a salad. Touristy spot in FW serving GREAT LUNCH MENU! We were looking forward to stop at Crannog Seafood in our journey from Edinburgh to the Isle of Skye. It was a great experience! Relaxing lunch served by nice staff. We tried the mussels, the smoked salmon pate and a couple of fish dishes. Everything was fantastic. The mussels are "a must"! I also enjoyed a lot the thick cod fillet (although the sauce was "too buttered"). Two appetizers (one was not in the lunch menu), two main courses and two sodas for 42 pounds (including tips). A highlight for me each time I come to Fort William. Always fairly crowded, so be sure to get a reservation. The food is wonderful [especially the langoustines and the cullen skink]. Service is fairly normal for the area in that it can be slow and sometimes takes a while for the bill, but the staff is friendly and helpful.
