We ate here on our last night in Inverness after a very long day on a tour. We did not have reservations but the restaurant was accommodating and kind. The World Cup Game was on so it was lively and fun. I will tell you, this was some of the best seasoned food we had the entire time we were in the UK (two weeks). Finally we didn't feel the need to add salt to something. The flavor was just spot on. My husband had the beer steak pie with puff pastry, I had the Cullen skink, my son had a pizza (I can't remember if it was on the kids' menu or not) and my daughter had a Caesar salad with chicken, which she eats a lot at home and had been craving. Both the skink and the stew were perfectly flavored! The fish in the stew was tender and so was the steak in the pie. If we ever go back to Inverness, we will be sure to be returning to Johnny Foxes. While the name and location scream "tourist trap", Johnny Foxes is an outstanding pub that happens to draw in a non local crowd. We dropped by for an early dinner and got seated right away in a booth. The menu is broadly pub fare, with a focus on burgers and a couple of more upscale dishes (including an excellent fried camambert). We split the camambert (panko crusted and served with a fig and onion jam); my wife had a vegan Scotch broth + house made bread + tomato & pesto bruschetta, while I went with the highland burger: haggis on top of 6oz of dry aged Angus beef. The burger was exceptional, with a deep and pleasantly gamey flavour while the haggis added some richness. Paired with a pint of a local cask ale (Cromarty Brewing Happy Chappy pale), it was as good as dinner as we could've imagined on our first night in the Highlands. read more

Excellent spot for meal in Inverness. It has a wonderful ambiance especially the booths. It's a pub but won't table service. They have live music today starting at 10:30. But the highlight is the food. My wife ordered the mussels. They were served in a light cream sauce with a hint of peppers. Sublime and plentiful. Wonderful spot along the river in Inverness. This spot was a short walk from our hotel and they were able to accommodate my gluten free need. Our server, Great Gal but can't remember her name. Had an Australian accent.... But she was fabulous!! Everyone was so friendly and just created a relaxed and comfortable environment. We left before the live band started but they do have music most nights I believe. Ohhh and I had one of the best "Scottish" coffee (aka Irish coffee) I have ever had here! Such a friendly place! We popped in as we were on a self guided tour from our cruise (basically they drop you in town for three hours). We did a walking tour via gpsmycity that walked is about 2.5 miles to all the key sites in town, then stopped in here for lunch before the ride back to the ship. They start serving food at noon; so we did a pre lunch wine, then ordered our meals right when they were ready. Our server was so sweet and she ensured we had our food in ten mins so we still had time for a walk before we had to catch the bus. I love all the positive messages around this place as well. We definitely have this city on our list of 'we'd like to return for a longer stay' since there are so many museums and such to explore. Our group came in late into Inverness and was recommend this pub from the driver. We were hoping to grab some pub food and a beer. But on a Friday the kitchen closed before 9:00 so no food. so found a table outside to have a drink and realized their was a burger joint next door called Coyote. Since we were drinking outside we brought food over from a delicious burgers to enjoy with our beers, best of both worlds since eating burger. Unfortunately while drinking outside at the bar we were told no outside food and told we must put away. Thought strange since we were out of the restaurant and their kitchen closed and saw others eating chips that were clearly not from the bar. So we put the food away to be respectful and finished our beers and will find a new place to continue our drinking. read more

This place is great! Not sure why the 3.9 stars??? We were enthusiastically greeted. It was a warm day, so outdoor seating was full and the inside was filling up fast, they gave us a 45 min wait time but offered us to sit at the bar which was still empty (was 630pm). We didn't even wait 20 minutes before we were seated. Meanwhile the bar tenders were happy to have us, treated our daughter to a coke and were cool with kids around the bar(we usually leave places that whine or nag about kids being around the bar). The food was outstanding, I had the venison medallion with mash and black pudding. It was fantastic, I just about cleared the plate if not for having to consume half of my mother's burger, which was also fantastic. My dad had the beyond burger and said it was kinda meh. My wife had the fish and chips, which I got to taste and that dish was fantastic as well. Daughters had the pesto, mushroom risotto and Mac n cheese. Overall the menu seemed like there was something for everyone but robust. We missed the live music, which would have just made it that much better. The waitress and the front was bubbly and sweet and took care of us. She was attentive and patient. But it was early. Lol. Cool feel to it. Pub and warm and beer and old guys And tourists. Menu has burgers and salads as well as some local favs. Guiness pie, fish and chips, some smoked haddock with leek and onion soup. Full bar with wine beer whisky and anything else you fancy. I've heard of good nightly entertainment. We'll update the review after we eat. So.... The pie was more of a stew with a puff on top. Not bad but loaded with mushrooms. I'm not a fan but my wife enjoys them so she took care of that. Also no tatties just chips which were ok. All in all tasty but wouldn't order it again. Wife got the nessie burger which she liked. Only packet condiments. So if you want ketchup or mustard ask for extra. They should put some on the table. Didn't like the coleslaw. Tasted like mayo with a little bit of cabbage. The food, service and atmosphere was wonderful! My wife has the fish and chips and I have the beef rib. Both were very good. The only disappointment was the sticky toffee pudding which was very different than what we have had numerous times both in England and Scotland. It was good but not at all what we expected. The fries/chips it came out very crispy. The coleslaw was drenched in thick mayo (I couldn't eat it). 3) mussels were delicious & came with a lot of bread to dip. Asked for an extra 2 wedges of lemon which cut the sweetness of the cream sauce and it was so delicious with the addem lemon. 4) beet salad came with arugula and marinaded artichoke hearts. The arugula was extra spicy but I think this salad would pair better with a mixed greans. The spiciness of the arugula took away the sweetness of the beets. The food was really delicious, the service was really amazing. We didn't have to wait long for our food, when we did the only the I noticed with my order of 'The Nessie Burger' was the fries needed some salt. The atmosphere was really country like, however if you go with little kids make sure not to go by the bar as when we were sat near it we could hear a lot of f-bombs being dropped. First let me say that the woman who served us was wonderful, friendly, and clearly trying to put out fires everywhere. But beyond that, this was not a great spot. First off, it's Irish not Scottish (if that matters to you). The food was mediocre at best. Said server only arrived at our table after the first server had approached then left us and didn't return for 20 minutes. We finally changed seats, hoping someone would notice us. As you enter, there is the typical hostess stands, surrounded by a dirty ashtray, piles of dirty dishes, a plastic bag with someone's box of hair dye in it, a plastic trash bin. Not at all welcoming. Right away you know you're in a bar in Scotland because the floors are wooden and sticky, but the space is cozy and really cool. The restaurant is right across from the river which is nice and if you're lucky enough to get a booth facing the river, then you can enjoy the passing traffic. Menu is fairly expensive offering a variety of things from fish to classic pie as well as venison and salads.If eating isn't your thing it looks like there's a full bar where you can get your libations. And if eating and drinking aren't your game then they have 2 that might be? There's a Queen gambling machine and some other kind of jackpot machine next to the fire exit. The music is also pretty low key being very casual and the whole environment is really great. Step on in for a good time. I ordered a hamburger and my husband ordered a pie and I liked mine more than he liked his, but he doesn't like mushrooms and it was filled with them. I thought his Sheppard pie was tasty, but still bland. The peas on the sie were hard and under-cooked but I suppose that was better than mush. Even though the servers were all acting as a team it was still difficult getting ketchup and mustard and water.... Come decide for yourselves! read more

Certainly not my favorite stop. We actually popped in a bit early for dinner, not knowing that the kitchen was closed. Instead of venturing back out into the cold and wind, we decided to post up at a table, pints in hand, until we could order dinner. By the time the kitchen opened, we were starving. We ordered the Haggis & Neep Spring Rolls to share. I got the day's special (a burger), and my husband ordered the Steak & Guinness Pie. It took quite a bit of time for the food to start to trickle out of the kitchen, considering we were one of the first parties to place a meal order. I definitely enjoyed the "spring rolls" the most. They were more of an "eggroll" when you get right down to it, but at least they had good flavor. An order comes with three rolls, each served on top of a creamy sauce. They were perfectly deep-fried, and not too oily. I could taste the haggis (it held up well being deep-fried), but the turnip flavor was completely gone. Still, it was much better than the daily special, which looked as though it would be super moist and tasty, but in reality was dry and difficult to choke down. It had an off flavor that left me feeling a bit wonky - it definitely wasn't "gamey", as I've eaten and enjoyed wild-caught game in the past. I couldn't put my finger on it, but it was very unpleasant and I didn't end up finishing the sandwich. The fries were nice and crispy, though, and made up the bulk of my meal. My husband seemed to like his pie, which was served as a bowl of steak and Guinness stew, topped with a puff of dough. It came with fries and a pile of peas. The drink menu was at least decent enough to rate a star or two, and my husband liked his meal, so that's where the two-star rating comes from. I definitely wouldn't go back, between my not-so-good meal and the flighty waitress. read more

We visited not once, but three times. FANTASTIC Scottish fare. What we -really- appreciated was that when we (Americans) asked for some help, they treated us like family and not "bloody tourists" particularly in regards to highland whiskeys. What I really like about this place is it's location. Basically right in the center of everything.. There's some legend about Johnny Fox but honestly I didn't pay much mind to it. I probably should have, but I think it went something like this: Johnny Fox was some dude that poached a lot. He got caught up with the wrong crowd, probably because his dad didn't hug him enough, and then turned to drugs. Then he died. Disclaimer: I am 99% certain that is NOT how the legend goes.
