Our burger and soup were pretty good and came out within 15 minutes. 1 star for the two women at the bar who are not friendly "at all" and were taking other orders from people who arrived at the bar "after" me. Great place right on the locks. Inside and outside dining available. Great atmosphere inside and out. The bar had a nice selection of beers and liquors. The venison stew was delicious and a nice portion. Ended up sharing a table with a couple from the southern UK and had a great conversation. Loved the food here, the cleanliness, location, views and speed of receiving food. When you go in, you seat yourself and order your own food. Sounds crazy but we actually got the food pretty fast. The views of the lochs are nice and they have seating outside as well for nicer weather. We got the fresh haddock and chips and it was amazing. Portion size was very big. Also got the black cherry beer and it was super good (and I'm not a super beer drinker). The Goat cheese salad was delicious as well and I would order everything again. So glad we decided to go here: it was perfect after a long day of hiking. read more

This place would be 4 stars if it wasn't for the location. The location walking distance from our hotel with a view of the locks and then up across Loch Ness to the hills knocks it up to a 5. We came here after the Boathouse restaurant near where we were staying wasn't open because of some issue with their gas for cooking. We grabbed a table right on the locks, then ordered food and a few pints and it was an incredibly nice lunch. The beer selection was so-so. We got two Cairngorm cask ales (sheepshagger gold and trade winds wheat) but neither was great. The Guinness wound up being better. The food was pretty damn good though. They probably could have gotten by with mediocre pub grub, but instead the fish and chips was a whole half a haddock battered and fried as one piece and the steak pie was nice, tender pieces of beef. The mac and cheese was also very good. Not as good as the best upscale restaurants, but way better than you'd expect from a random pub. Then there's the fact that we got to sit and enjoy it all with a view of the lock ring in front of us and a view up the canal to Loch Ness with the hills behind it on the other side. read more

Glad I chose this place for lunch in Fort Augustus- food came out fast and we made it just before a big lunch rush (1:45 pm). My macaroni and cheese really hit the spot on a cold day. The topping was crunchy and the cheeses were so savory. The whole dish was filling. It came with chips and a small side salad, which was a nice touch and left me very full. This was about £15 for the entree, which I thought was high, but considering the area and the amount of food you get, I think it's reasonable. read more

Would probably be 2 stars in a normal location but given the fact that it's a touristy spot with a dearth of quality food choices, and that it has a full bar, let's be generous and give it 3 stars. Mushroom soup was hot and tasty but super salty. Fish and chips were decent, peas were good. Order and pay at the bar then find a seat and they will bring it out to you pretty quickly. Bathrooms are dirty and tables are sticky. read more

3.5 stars We were in town for about an hour or so, with a tour. We needed lunch, and the menu here called to us, so we decided to give it a try. There weren't many people in the dining room when we arrived, so we were able to get a table no problem. They had a specials board on the wall, and you had to order and pay at the bar. I went with one of their specials, the mussels in a cream sauce, which came with a boatload of bread. My husband got a chicken dish, which was served with rice and a small salad. We supplemented our meal with an order of cheesy fries, a beer for him and a rum and coke for me. The service wasn't exactly super-speedy, and the two people working the bar weren't exactly super-friendly. I was surprised by how long it took for the plates to get to us, especially since - as I mentioned - there weren't a whole lot of people there before us. I will say that I was surprised by the size of the plates - there were a ton of (really good) mussels in my bowl, and my husband's plate was piled high with food. They were both decent (though I think my husband liked his dish much more than I liked mine). It was nice to have a place to sit down for a real meal while everyone else on our tour was sailing the loch, but it could have been better. read more

Service leaves a lot to be desired, by virtue of being non existent. Waited in line for a long time just to learn they won't take an order. No one bothered to mention we need a table before ordering - we are responsible for finding it. Would be good to know ahead of time. They have plenty of people so they won't bother if a few leave, but I think their rating here should reflect that attitude. read more

Poor Hospitality - As tourists visiting Scotland, we'd travelled quite far without anything to eat since breakfast. It was just after 9:30pm, so almost all kitchens were closed in Fort Augustus. We went to the Lock Inn first, hoping to be served, but their kitchen had just closed (nothing wrong with that.) The only food we could find, however, was a (delicious) pizza place around the corner that only offered takeaway at that time of night. We got a pizza and went back to the Lock Inn to order a drink. There were only a few people in our section of the pub, and we sat at a long, empty table. After getting our drinks and enjoying most of our pizza, we were accosted by a waitress who told us that outside food was not allowed. She said that the pizza needed "to be gone" quite aggressively. I tried to explain our situation - that we had tried to order food from the Lock Inn itself & that the pizza was the only food we could find, but she said that it needed to be kept on the seat rather than the perfectly good table in front of us (presumably so that her manager couldn't see). We scarfed down our pizza and felt obliged to leave. A pub can make their own rules, certainly, but if respectful travelers attempt to be your customer while also needing to eat and you turn them out on the street for having food - that's just bad hospitality. read more

Situated on the banks of the Caledonian Canal with it's series of locks, the aptly named Lock Inn provides refreshment for those using the canal and the many visitors to Fort Augutus. The pub itself is warm and cosy with the bar itself being the main feature made from solid oak. The lady behind the bar certainly had a presence but made us feel welcome. We didn't eat here so I can't comment on the food but the menu certainly looked very 'pubby' The local ale was good, as was the whiskey (well, when in Scotland...!) Definitely worth popping in for a pint if you are in the area. read more

2 of us came here around 21:00 for dinner and a drink. The 3 stars of for slightly above average food, good drink selection, mediocre service, and a pleasant dining area upstairs. The place is separated into a bottom floor which has a pub atmosphere and the upper floor which has a cosy and clean feeling. We ordered a cheeseburger and a vegetarian casserole of aubergines/eggplants and chickpeas in a tomato base. The burger came with fries/chips and a side salad. The salad had different mixed greens and was much nicer than the standard iceberg greens in many other Scottish restaurants we've been in the few days prior to visiting Lock Inn. The chips were slightly above average. The burger itself: everything was great except the meat itself. Maybe it is a Scottish thing, but all the burgers we've had in Scotland were made of fantastic tasting meat...but they cook it all the way til it's well done and overcooked! The vegetarian casserole was slightly below average. All the ingredients were there, but it tasted like the vegetables were either not prepared or from a can, and the flavor didn't really come out. It did feel healthy though. The strawberry rhubarb cider and the craft lager (or ale?) on tap were very nice. read more

Good food, good desserts, and just a nice little place to visit. The service was typical for a pub (order at the bar). Inside it looks small, but there is an upstairs and it appears that they have a reserved area outside, next to the locks, where you can also dine. I would caution, however, that on a warm day it may be uncomfortable upstairs as there was no air conditioning and there were signs saying not to open the windows. read more

A friendly pub that seems popular with locals and passers by alike. Overlooking the 5 locks this would be a lovely spot to pass the time on a sunny day. We went for an evening meal and a drink, the local beer on draft was very nice and well kept. The food was well prepared and tasty, filled us both up pleasantly with just a main course. The haddock had a lovely batter but I wouldn't say it was a whale like other posts or our B&B owners, maybe late in the day they run out of the bigger cuts. There was still more than enough fish to suffice the appetite. My wife's steak was cooked perfectly an the chips were good proper British pub chips. Well worth a visit if passing by and hungry/thirsty. read more

The Lock Inn has a cozy pub situated along the banks of the Caledonian Canal at the famous Loch Ness (lake). This restaurant is a good place to stop by for lunch while you are strolling along Loch Ness. There are a variety of malt whiskies and theflavorfu l, crispy, flaky haddock and chips were done to perfection. The Highland venison was also delightful and nice 'comfort' food for a brisk, chilly afternoon. Afterward, walk over to the canal and watch the boats pass through the ladder-like locks--an 'orchestrated event' that is fascinating to witness. We were staying in Fort Augustus for a few days and had walked past this place for a day or two. We weren't really expecting that much to be honest. I got the Keeman Vegetarian Haggis Curry and the gluten free mushroom soup. I'm not a vegan or anything and love my meat. But those two dishes made you forget they didn't have meat in them because they were so tasty. The staff were lovely too. Great value for money, and great quality. read more

Walked by and looked at the menu as an older local told us the food is great. We gave it a try and were impressed. The outdoor menu was generic, but the chalkboard inside had unique stuff. I had the Mac and Cheese, which was awesome and she had the Mushroom Risotto and cleaned her plate. My husband and I ate here during our night-stop in Fort Augustus. There were many local restaurants to choose from and without any recommendations, this just seemed to be populated by locals- which is usually a good sign! We arrived for an early dinner and the lower part of the pub was packed. We ordered at the bar and headed to the upstairs dining room, where we were alone for our entire meal. The pub is very cozy and has pretty views of the canal. I ordered a cheeseburger and my husband had a salad. The food was good, but nothing remarkable. Quick review for a quick lunch stop. We were in Fort Augustus briefly as a stop on our Highland Day Tour. The location was convenient, prices were reasonable and the service was speedy. Everyone was friendly. It's obviously mostly a tourist spot. The fish and chips we had were some of the better ones we had on our UK trip. We also thought the fish-shaped plates were a cute touch. The downstairs was a little cramped, especially as more people came in for lunch, but there's an upstairs as well. The bathroom was clean. If I could give this place 0 stars I would. The customer service is horrendous. They ask you to sit anywhere but don't bother to inform you that you actually need to place the order at the bar. When we asked and were finally informed that we need to go the bar, we placed the order with Mr "Wannabe Cool Guy". We never received our food order even after a hour, despite asking the waiter multiple times. The waiter gave us all kinds of responses like "don't worry" to "I don't know how the kitchen works" before finally admitting a hour later that there was some "problem" with the machine but he didn't know when we would receive the order. This was the last straw for us. When we went back to the bar to cancel the food order and pay for our drinks, Mr " Wannabe Cool Guy" had the gall to ask us to come back again after we explained to him that we were highly disappointed. Very disappointed to have encountered this in beautiful Scotland. Avoid this joint at all costs! read more

We ate here after walking all day. Absolutely the best meal we have had in Scotland. The haggis in a great mustard sauce quickly disappeared and the Mac and cheese was creamy with a nice cheesy crust. The fish and chips looked great and the steak pie had us all drooling. The food here is at the top end of what you'd expect to pay for "pub food" but the quality doesn't equal that. When I was there they had a sirloin steak on the specials board for £23 - the Lovat (a 2 rosette restaurant in the same village) sells it for the same price and the food there is of a significantly higher quality. Beer was nice and the landlady and landlord are certainly characters! read more

Last night (Saturday) we tried to go to the Lock Inn around 7:30pm and found it so busy that we were told they had no seats available and that they stopped serving food at 9pm and we might want to try just before then for a table. We left and tried again today at an earlier hour - 5:45pm. Today they had tables available and it was worth the wait! I had the lamb special and it was so moist it just fell apart using a fork and the taste was fantastic! My daughter had their macaroni and cheese dish and said it was the best baked macaroni she has ever had - and she has eaten a lot of macaroni and cheese in her life. My husband had their cheeseburger and said that it was definitely worth the wait - nothing was left on his palate when he was finished, and he ate part of my lamb special. We topped it off with a dish of their mint ice cream - again wonderful. The place is worth going to over and over again. If it's crowded - keep trying you will by be disappointed with the wait! read more

As a vegetarian I usually struggle to find good hot food. This place was amazing with its veggie bean burger and chick pea and 3 bean casserole. Service was good and quick. Will return if in the area again. Would have given it 5* if it was a wee bit cheaper. read more
