We were on a day tour to the Highlands, and Loch Ness was our third -- and main -- stop. We had…read morearound 2-2.5 hours there and were free to explore and grab lunch wherever we liked. After roaming around the town and a tiring day out, being South Asian, we were craving some rice. We spotted this place and decided to give it a try. We walked in and were greeted with warm, smiley faces. The restaurant was almost empty, which made us a little unsure at first -- but we decided to settle down and order: * Chicken Szechuan * House Special Fried Rice And wow... what a meal it turned out to be! The Chicken Szechuan was absolute gold -- perfectly cooked, loaded with veggies, and coated in flavorful sauces. The House Special Fried Rice was good too -- though I personally would have loved it a bit spicier or with more veggies. The pricing was reasonable (thankfully not £17 for a single basic meal ). Service was very good -- simple, polite, and efficient. The décor was typical Chinese style, nothing fancy, just a couple of servers managing the place Overall: simple place, tasty food, good service. 4/5

Look, lets be honest. This is a pub in the middle of Scotland on the shores of Loch Ness. It is…read morenot 5-star as in a 5-star fine dining experience. It's 5-star as in I don't think you find much better pub fare in the middle of Scotland. Fort Augustus isn't a sleepy little village - it is a touristy area with people trying to catch a glimpse of Nessy - so while there aren't a ton of options, there are a number of places to eat and I think for a less pricey meal, this is definitely your go-to. We were at the tail end of a long road trip and were headed back to Edinburgh, but needed dinner. Stopped in here as they had a couple of options for my pescatarian fiance. We split an order of mussels - I'm pretty sure we liked it but honestly, its been a while and I don't remember how good it was. However, based on my entree - I got the Chicken Escalope - this meal was delicious. The chicken was essentially just a lightly breaded chicken breast with a large side of veggies, but however they cooked this, it was delicious. Not only was it a lot of food, but it was really tasty. On top of all of that, our server/bartender was a young guy in his 20s who seemed to know everything there was to know about Scotch. He had some fantastic recommendations that unfortunately, I could not find to bring home, but really enjoyed the scotches I drank there. He was also very friendly and accommodating, and helped make the meal one of the more memorable ones. So yes, I know many of you would look at the 5-star rating and think I simply drank too much scotch. You wouldn't be wrong. But neither am I. As far as pub fare goes out in the middle of the country, this was excellent.

A find for sure. A…read morepurely random stop as we were driving, flying along the road. I saw a sign in a blur as we passed that said something about a floating cafe. Well, in my mind, we had to stop for such a thing. It took a minute to get back to the spot, and another to wander around the lock on the river there to figure out where it was. It turns out it's a large boat anchored above the lock, tied off to the moorings. We walked on board, and ducked our heads and went below. Here there was a surprisingly small but well stocked bar. All around the bar were about a dozen fellas jawing it up and laughing, in what I would guess to be a Gaelic speak(I understood none of the banter). We used the facilities(yes they had a good bathroom), and saw down on some large leather couches like we were in a den in someones house. We ended up with a couple glasses of wine and relaxed. There was a dog wandering around by us, relaxed to the odd juxtaposition of a bar under water. To the side of the couches was actually a lizard fish tank, just to add some quirky ambiance I suppose. we only stayed for a couple drinks, we had to be on our way. But not before thanking the gal working that day,for a great spot to stop and relax for a moment on the road.

Only to find a rather snarky young woman who said, oh, they weren't doing food. We were starving! And I had emailed! But she just shrugged and said, well, we're open, aren't we? When I emailed to complain, the manager said that my original email hadn't asked about food, "so the error lays with you". I didn't ask if you had bubonic plague, either, but I'd expect you to mention it. I really, really don't recommend going there. Or if you do, email beforehand and ask if they have food, if the lights work, if the loo flushes and if the boat has sunk. Otherwise, the error "lays" with you.
