Re: Delicious Sticky Toffee Pudding To the Greek couple we met in Inverness, with great apologies, we suffered confusion of which delicious desserts we had at various restaurants around the city, inadvertently directing you towards a place that did not serve sticky toffee pudding. We should have pointed you towards MacGregor's as having the most delicious sticky toffee pudding, now verified after having several others that did not perfectly balance sweet with salt as that of the sticky toffee pudding at MacGregor's. If the pub is full, please find your way to the end of the bar and the small door to the left that takes you to the cosy table service room where Jess and other wait staff, including little Nala, will take the best care of you. We also highly recommend the steak & ale pie and fish & chips, should you require something a bit more than the sticky toffee pudding. We had a couple of great drams at MacGregors during out 4 nights in Inverness. Thanks to the bartender for the recommendation, and for the local who insisted on buying as a second. MacGregors is one of a few pub/music venues within a few minutes of each other on or nearby to Church Street. We got to experience a local performer share a variety of tunes while drinking as well as experience the friendly atmosphere of the place. There's a full dinner menu too, though limited vegetarian options (salad, soup, and halloumi cheese) They also are one of the couple venues in town that hosts a show that offers a cultural overview of the area (check out the Highland Malt Experience.) MacGregor's is a great spot regularly inhabited by locals and visitors. It's well worth stopping in. read more

It was incredibly busy, which speaks to its popularity, but the atmosphere was electric. We managed to snag a spot on the good patio, which is a great place to people-watch and enjoy a dram or a pint when the weather cooperates. This place was truly excellent, the best food I had in Scotland. There's not a lot of seating there, but fortunately it was reasonably warm outside on this day, and they have a decent size outdoor eating area. You go in and order at the bar and then they give you a number and they bring it to your table. Definitely recommend the Scottish sampler, complete with haggis and cullen skink - these things may have a bad name but they sure are tasty. A great supply of beers on tap and a solid Scotch whiskey list to boot. If you find yourself in Inverness, be sure to squeeze yourself into MacGregor's. read more

Had a grand time at MacGregor's in Inverness on a rainy Friday evening. We sat down at a table and made some friends, drank the Dog Falls stout and enjoyed a proper evening at the pub! We had dinner there (I enjoyed the Steak and Ale Pie served with yummy crisp vegetables and chips) and then they booted us from the booth to make way for the musicians--a lively mix of 3 fiddles, bagpipes and guitar. Bruce McGregor, bar owner, was playing with the band! Located in city centre Inverness is MacGregors, which claims to be the best bar in Scotland. I'm not so sure about the claim of being the best, but it'd definitely be in the conversation for the upbeat atmosphere and live music. There is very limited indoor seating, as many come for the live music. There is an outdoor patio if you can't get a seat inside, but you won't have direct views of the band, and it does tend to get chilly at night in northern Scotland. For food, we ordered the mozzarella sticks, fish & chips, and chicken burger. While the mozzarella stick were forgettable and served with some odd spicy salsa (definitely not a marinara sauce), the meals were both delicious and of above average quality. The Lost Orchards cider they had on tap also hit the spot. While you had to order yourself at the bar and there was nobody waiting on you, the staff that took orders and brought out food were very friendly. The star of the show was definitely the live music, as the band performed a variety of songs and the crew got larger as the night progressed as new band members joined the performance. Maybe since it was my first time watching a Scottish music being performed at a pub live, but the overall experience was worthy of 5 stars. I'd recommend a visit to MacGregors Bar if you're looking for live music and fun atmosphere in Inverness. read more

My husband and I signed up for the afternoon Highland experience at MacGregor's. What an amazing program! We both highly recommend it. This is a new program so we were the only two to sign up for today's experience. The owner provided us a 5-star experience. This 60-70 minute program included Highland history, live music, a whiskey tasting and sampling of traditional Scottish dishes--Cullen skink, smoked salmon, and a Scotch egg. We were even invited to stay and listen to local musicians rehearse. We stopped back by a few hours later to watch the musicians perform. 100% YES! This is the best pub in all of the highlands! We went for the whiskey tasting and stayed till the lights were on! The musician (and incredible storyteller) Davy Holt made the night totally unforgettable. His charisma and powerful voice really blew us away. We had dinner there too- I had the lentil soup and my husband had something he loved, but we can't remember what. We had SO MUCH FUN! We made a bunch of friends, sang and danced the night away, all the bartenders were super friendly and helpful, and we wished this could be our neighborhood bar! This burger was my first meal in Inverness! I'd been traveling through the UK and really craved a cheeseburger. I was able to easily walk in to some lively music and order directly from the bar. I like like that they have recommendations for beer that would complement my meal and they have a variety of options including salads! The servers were super quick and everyone had such a great time. I would 5 out of 5 rate the Whisky Tasting Experience at MacGregors, we were looking for a great tasting experience (across two weeks this was our third one and was by far the best Scottish Whisky Tasting experience, we tried for dinner afterwards but it was packed an no room. We enjoyed the tasting so much we came back the following night for drinks and dinner. This is a must visit spot. We met many nice people from there and elsewhere, everyone was nice. Went to this place hoping to hear live music, but it didn't start until 9pm and we were all still jet lagged. This is a quintessential Scottish pub, great drinks, good food, and pretty good service. Two of us had the steak pie, which was disappointing. It was good with an interesting presentation but i was hoping for a more traditional pub pie and what i got reminded me more of my mother's pot roast with a very good gravy and chips. The fish and chips were ordered by another and it was fantastic (to be honest I've never had bad fish and chips in Scotland). Great little pub. I say at the bar for a drink before my dinner reservation. Yes, make a reservation! It was cozy and friendly and the bartenders were helpful with suggestions. Once seated in the dining room, I had prompt friendly service. I ordered traitors foods, the Cullen and Skink and the Steak and Ale Pie, and both were excellent. We had dinner here our first night in Inverness, and felt we'd found a perfect place to begin our holiday. It's a comfortable neighborhood spot with excellent food and drink and friendly service. They have a great menu, with lots of choices, but the local pork sausage with root vegetables and mashers in a red wine jus sounded just perfect for a chilly night. It was. My husband had fish & chips and was as happy as I was with my meal. We both tried a pint of local beer. There's music nightly, but we were jet lagged and will have to go back for that. Food only review - our family didn't go for the whiskey tasting or music (though I would definitely go back for either of those) Made our reservation a few weeks prior to going based on reviews, and definitely glad we picked MacGregor's. Food was all delicious. I had the Cullen Skien and Blaggis chips. Like most, I was skeptical about haggis before coming to Scotland, but I am now a huge fan! The blaggis fries are haggis and black pudding, along with cheese and gravy, on top of chips. In other words, a bowl or happy yums. The husband had the sausage and mash, the oldest had the fish and chips. They loved and I sampled and enjoyed as well. The downsides: no kids menu. However, after talking her into it, the youngest had mozzarella sticks and enjoyed them. The other downside was that the service was a bit slow. More than just I'm from the US and am used to quick service; this was the waitress seemed to forget about us for a while slow service. read more

Not to Be Missed! We enjoyed a fantastic evening at MacGregors. We made our reservations for dinner in advance, which is essential, as well as the Highland Malt Whisky Experience afterward. Cocktails enjoyed were: The Romantic, the Adventurer, and the Philosopher. All were top notch delicious. If you enjoy cider, the cider on draft is one of the best we've had (and we've had a lot!). For dinner, we started with the mussels. Two in our group had the local steak and ale pie; one had the fish and chips; and I had the salmon. Again, superb. I enjoyed the imaginative twist on my sides, such as beetroot mash. For dessert, we shared a sticky toffee pudding. This was a new dish for one of us, and she was over the moon. After dinner, we went downstairs for the highland whisky experience. Outstanding! The room was set up beautifully and cozy, thanks to our co-host Martha. We had a wonderful group of 14 people, the perfect number. Our host, Davy, wove stories of history and traditional musical selections related to the stories through the tastings. We learned a lot and had a ton of fun. One in our party learned that she dislikes whisky, and that's an informed opinion because she gamely tried them all. I am a whisky lover, but not familiar with Highland whiskies. I enjoyed them all, but walked away with a clear favorite. The other two of us gained a new appreciation. Food was ok but I got the farm fresh cheeseburger and it tasted frozen and not alot of flavor. Service was literally serve yourself all they did is bring your food to you .
