Let me start off by saying this is my first review. As a restaurant owner myself I like to steer clear of the whole scene. I do however find Yelp to be a helpful metric and this is the first time since I have been a member of yelp since 2009 that hospitality has challenged by stance. There is so much to say, but as a 46 year old who has spent their entire life enjoying the sound of their own voice I will keep this brief as I am being dragged, kicking and screaming, into maturity. Just outside of Inverness sits a quirky and humble inn perched on a corner in a village with the same qualities in equal measure. The host and owner, Jim, has plied his trade here since 2003 and I can only imagine that the well worn, but not shabby, interior and decor is a product of passion for his craft. They seem to have an ability to cobble together a staff that only exceeds their grace in hospitality in their camaraderie as a team with a total sweetie manning the ship. Everyone is beyond welcoming. The food veers away from your typical standard Scottish pub fare with splashes of American standards along with some continental fare, while still having chow that is common to the region. The beer and whisky menu is curated and a welcome refreshment on the middle leg of our journey as most Scottish pubs tend to lean more towards regional standards, not a bad thing, but after drinking dozens of pints of bitters and milds it was a delight to see a lovely pilsner on draft. I am not a whisky drinker myself but I am in hospitatliy and over hearing the servers describe the selection when asked by the guests one can tell they have done their homework. All in all a place busting with charm and personality in each and every employee and hospitality at its finest. Before we went on our trip, my boyfriend did a little bit of research on the are we would be staying so we didn't waste time trying to figure out nearby good places. Not even 10 minutes from our place he had marked The Anderson. Just a short drive from our AirBnb, and lucky to get a parking spot just across from it, this was starting to be a great night. We walk in, and the host immediately greeted us. There was an empty room to our left, which I'm assuming was for private parties or busier nights, but we were escorted straight in the room behind the host. Cozy room, with a small bar, and filled with locals. All having a good time, and some even talking with the staff showing they visit the restaurant often. That was a good sign and made us feel great about picking this place for dinner. Our server was awesome. Very friendly, treated us like family, and helped us with what to order. The specials of the day are all written down on a chalk board and she brought it to our table and explained each dish to us. One of the things we wanted to try was their haggis, and since we didn't know if we would like it or not, she recommended just getting a side which she said would be enough for both of us. On top of that I got the Special Pie of the day: Chicken Bacon and Mushroom pie. The way she described it sounded delicious so I just had to try it, even if I'm not a fan of pie crust. Haggis came out and to my surprise I really liked it. It's texture is kind of like ground beef and corn beef hash in one (IMO), salty and flavorful. The Pie was perfection! I even loved the crust. Homemade, flaky, buttery delicious crust but not a lot of it so you can truly enjoy the flavors of the filling. Tender juicy chicken, creamy sauce with mushrooms and the bacon adds more flavor to it. The pasta special was a monkfish wrapped with pancetta with a creamy sauce and was divine. While we enjoyed our dinner we also had the chance to pick a record to play on the turntable - How cool is that? And even with the music and everyone having conversations all around the place was never loud so we could enjoy our conversation as well. Honestly one of the best finds during our trip. read more

I was surprised we would find a place this perfect, so close to our little place staying in the Black Isle of northern Scotland. I had looked at a few places and reviews on line and had just crossed my fingers when we called ahead to get a table at the Anderson(a good idea). We came in and were guided to our table near the back, the best spot it seemed for dinner. We were surrounded by a few locals and some other folks. The music was from a turn table near us, that had a pile of records next to it. It was fun to drop a record on to play. we ordered up a Tournedos of beef, lamb, and the haggis(we had to finally try some). Everything was very good, but the best? It was the haggis. It was ground, and in a small container. to our surprise, we ate all of it, and both agreed that it was very good. the beer and the scotch menu were pretty darn good. best of all was probably the ambiance though. It had a local and friendly feel, even though apparently the owners were from the states. They had wanted to open a restaurant abroad and some how decided on this little town in North Scotland. It was to our benefit, as it was one of the best places we had a bite on our entire trip. read more

Great food, great people! Everyone was very friendly and helpful. The staff recommended good whisky and beer and the food was delicious.

Second stop on the Whisky Pilgrimage trail. The Anderson in Fortrose near Inverness is a beautiful pub. Over 200 bottles of single malt whisky and a stunning array of Belgian beers in bottles. The cask ales are also varied and and well served. In the whisky collection are some real gems including a fantastic selection of non-productive distilleries. Their Highland and Island collection is outstanding, which is not surprising, considering their location. Fairly light on the Islays but enough to keep any peat-head satisfied. This place is a treat and unless you are a local, a rare one. read more

Highly recommended for people that value character and personality over the polish and conformity of corporate run places. This is an old hotel, pub and restaurant that has been lovingly restored by the resident owners. At first glance, it reminds me of Fawlty Towers with a more eclectic decor. The hallways and common areas are decorated with deer heads and antique radios, the bars have mismatched furniture and coasters on the ceiling. It is rich with curios and oddities- bot not like those manufactured knick knacks that are strewn through cookie cutter pubs. And make no mistake, the real ale, the scotch and the food are all first rate. I'm a former brewer, and I traveled with a small group to Scotland to experience real ale and scotch. This place was everyone's favorite stop of the trip. Perfect pints of ale, served in a friendly atmosphere, with easy conversation with the staff and locals. I appreciated the absence of TVs and canned background music. The food menu had a nice balance of traditional foods and more modern dished showing a lighter touch with local meats and produce. We had set up a scotch tasting with the owner, Jim Anderson, and that was a highlight of out stay. He put everyone at their ease while leading through five or six representative malts. I believe they have almost 250 single malts in house! We all ended up finding one we liked enough to purchase a few at duty free on the way home. I'll definitely be back. read more

One of the best meals I have ever had and at a reasonable price too. I would have expected to pay twice what they were charging. Welcoming, gracious, and funny host. Great selection of single malt Scotch. Good wine list. Good selection of beers with a handful of Real Cask Ales. My only regret is that it will probably be at least a year before I can come back. read more

I visited with my wife on an impromptu short holiday to the Black Isle and we were both well pleased by our experience. The overall ethos at The Anderson Hotel comes from the USA background of the owners Jim and Anne Anderson, service is a given since Jim is ever present seeing things happen the way he expects. It is also nice to encounter a pleasant and motivated staff led from the front by Jim. The kitchen is the domain of Anne. It goes without saying that food and drink are well catered for and prices are reasonable considering the quality on offer. The hotel appears to be being refurbished as they can afford but has an eccentric, homely feel to it. It struck us that the nice ambience was also matched by the nice guests and customers; there was always the opportunity for pleasant conversation with others in either the Whisky Bar or the Dining Room. I am sure we shall return when in this lovely area of Scotland again. read more

Food was good there but overpriced for the area. Got a room there also.... Big cold room with a very uncomfortable bed. Pleasant staff and great selection of whiskeys and beer. Would return... But would not stay in the drab overpriced damp cold room. read more

I was staying in Fortrose for the night and was blown away by the beer selection at The Anderson. This was complemented by a great bartender and a delicious American-style (w/ a touch of haggis) burger. If I ever find myself in Fortrose again, I will definitely be visiting the Anderson for all my beer and meal needs. read more

Start with the good. Great building with tons of character and an awesome range of beers and whisky. On to the bad. The rooms and the reception room smelled horribly of mildew and urine. The menu was everything that is wrong with America, featuring massive, fatty over the top meals. There was even a burger that had 2 patties plus haggis that cost 25 pounds and if you could eat it in 20 minutes you got a free shirt! Disgusting and cheap.. not even a discount for such a display of gluttony! The owner really turned me off this place. He came to our table during dinner and asked how we were. I politely mentioned I had received the wrong beer. He told me that I was obviously jetlagged and ordered the wrong thing, even though I've been in Scotland 3 months! The staff all seem quite beaten down and morose, likely a symptom of having to work for such a cheap, rude, egomaniac. The walls of the bar literally look like a shrine to his personal greatness with caricatured drawings of himself for every event ever held here. Avoid this place at all costs!
