In Inverness for vacation and found this place on Yelp. This one being five stars was absolutely a let down and wish we went somewhere else. The food was OK - nothing spectacular, but nothing to complain about either. The menu is very basic but that didn't bother me much. The beer was good. For my complaint though - the service was really sub par. As someone who worked in the restaurant industry for five years I was very shocked at how they handled some things. For starters they brought us food menus to start (no water on the table) and didn't come back for about ten minutes. They finally came back to ask for drinks. They have no drink menu, which they explained was because of regularly rotating drinks - makes sense but there has to be some other way to convey what is available other than just "what're you looking for?". So we ordered drinks - 3 beers and a white wine. A few minutes later they came back with our drinks and the server spilled a red wine (mistakenly brought us red instead of white wine) while handing us the beers. The server left immediately without an apology or saying anything. To be fair, I think she was new. embarassed and very nervous - which is fine, I don't fault her for that. However we waited a good five minutes for someone to come back to even start cleaning up the wine and broke glass everywhere. another couple next to us also got splashed with wine and glass and never were apologized to. another server came over to clean. There was never an apology from anyone. Again in my experience in the industry this would warrant a manager issuing an apology. Some had been spilled all over my jeans and shoes, they didn't seem at all concerned about it. I asked for sparkling water to help clean up and ten minutes later I had to ask again because they never brought it over. After we received our food it was a while before anyone checked on us, and after our food was taken even longer before we had to ask for the check. If you're in town for vacation and looking for a place with excellent service you can skip here. read more

My wife and I stopped for dinner while on a trip to the UK. The restaurant had an event going on so we ate in the bar. In order to get served we had to wait in line at the bar to order our food and drinks. They had a good tap beer selection and the food was good. read more

I love this place. I was two nights in Inverness and because the restaurant I wanted to go on my second night was fully booked, I just came back to MacGregor's, where I already spend my first evening. The specialty beers, the great food, the nice staff (especially the charming bar woman) and the relaxed atmosphere make this place a true gem. Great food, ambience and drinks. We visited from the US and wanted to visit a pub while in Inverness. This did not disappoint at all.. the food was great especially the muscles. Beer as always is great in UK; loved the toffee pudding. We also had a Scottish family playing some music at the same time we were there and was absolutely a delightful experience . As very nice spot for a pub, unfortunately they were completely booked with two large parties. One of the bartenders was not too accommodating to us or other parties but he other one was. Served us a drink and made recommendations to asimilar spot nearby. I would go back for sure. read more

We stopped here for the #1 review early before dinner crowd and we were able to sit in bar. Nice pub w local brews, but they would not allow food without a dinner reservation. This was due to the problem of not having staffing. We found a great Turkish restaurant nearby for dinner. read more

So we went for the Whisky Experience and it was amazing. The gentleman who lead it was both an excellent guide through the history of Scotland but also an incredible musician. One warning: it's in an enclosed room in the basement and it got very hot. read more

They will not honor ​reservations. They explained they overbooked the night we were there, but claimed they called or texted us to cancel. They were not clear on which one they really did. We received no call or text from them. We did get an email telling us they were over booked and cancelling our reservation. ​They blamed us not getting a call because we had a United States based phone. Take care with your time while booking here. If you have late reservations this business may cancel and leave you scrambling for dinner. read more

Inverness is a hidden food mecca, and one of the very best places was a pub/bistro, MacGregors. It was recommended by our host, and it did not miss. We had a "large" bowl of Shetland Island mussels, and the bowl was truly huge! More like a bucket of small, very fresh, very succulent and tender gems, bathed in a white wine and cream broth. We loved them so much we counted them (76) and we took the remains of the broth and drank it plain; amazingly, not a grain of sand in the entire pot! Our second dish was a rib eye steak, ordered medium rare, and that's the way it came out! The meat had a slight char, and was very tasty, probably grass fed, and local for sure. The whisky sauce had just a slight taste of whisky and was perfect. The garnishes were charred perfectly: parsnips, carrots, a few tomatoes, and great crusty potatoes. What more could you ask for? read more

As someone who can be ignorant about food or drink sometimes (mainly because I rarely drink), the service here was amazing. Being a visitor to Scotland, unfamiliar with local cuisine, and wanting to try new things, the bartender (whom I unfortunately forgot to ask his name) was very helpful, and made my stay one of the most relaxed I've ever had. He helped me narrow down and sample some beers, in which I eventually picked a favourite. I inquired about venison, which I've never seen on a menu before coming to Scotland (which by the way, is deer meat), and told me every detail of it. So I ordered a burger along with my beer with venison rather than beef and to be honest, I'm a bit disappointed that venison isn't more widespread worldwide. The taste of the meat is indeed much richer than beef and I really enjoyed it (and if you've never tried it, I highly suggest you do!). The atmosphere was also very relaxed and I enjoyed every minute of it. My point for this review is not about the food or price, but it's about the service. The bartender was extremely helpful to someone who can be clueless about beer sometimes. Whenever I return to Inverness for visit, I'll be sure to visit this pub again. Three nights in Inverness, this became our nightly dinner spot. Friendly staff as busy as they were, great food and beer. I loved the mussels in whisky broth which was like a creamy chowder. Amazing pub food - we had 3 pub lite fare dishes £5-7 each - they could have easily been mains! Mac and cheese, mussels in whiskey and wee fish and chips. Mac and cheese super creamy and flavorful, mussels lovely, and the tartar sauce was house made and had stone ground mustard onboard. Heart lunch stop! read more

After being turned away from our hotel restaurant for not having a reservation at 6pm, I went to Yelp to find a local joint, and found MacGregor's just down the way. Fantastic service, very friendly and the food was terrific. We ordered the gin soaked mussels as a starter and we both had the pancetta wrapped venison with gnocchi. It was melt in your mouth delicious. The place did fill up rapidly, no surprise there. read more

We dropped in after taking a tour of Loch Ness ! We were so pleased, we had the mussels in whiskey the best mussels ever, and we have had them all over the world ! Great local beers and whiskey from the area ! Great staff friendly and knowledgeable ! Definitely stop when in Inverness, you won't regret it ! For our last night in Inverness, we wanted to go out with a culinary bang and were taken by the look and feel of MacGregor's as viewed through their website. They offered an elevated pub dining experience, the decor rustic with a modern twist. The menu was sophisticated yet approachable, hearty meals with tantalizing flavour profiles. What really set them apart was their selection of beers with their honest and playful descriptions -- a great aid for anyone seeking out strange brews in a new setting. The reality, I'm afraid, was a bit of a hit and miss experience. Based on the glowing online reviews, my wife and I both decided to try the Fired Up Ribs. Of the choice of two preparations (Red Wine and Garlic or Cuban Orange) we went with the Red Wine and Garlic as it was promised there would be more of a 'sauce'. When our dishes arrived, they were indeed impressive to behold but the flavour and doneness were anything but. We were told by one of the servers as he presented us with our steak knives that we wouldn't need them as the meat will "fall off the bone". Well, not only did I need the steak knife but could probably have used a hacksaw. Mine was bone dry and tough as shoe leather. (My wife's was moist and juicy, however.) Flavour-wise, neither one of us could taste red wine or garlic. Fresh cut chips and onion rings were done well though the vegetables could have used a bit more imagination. So here's the conundrum: neither one of us like to complain and usually when asked, we say that everything was fine. But we were so disappointed with our meal that this time, we were politely honest. Our server, Moa, was a star about the whole thing. She was very apologetic and spoke to the chef about our concerns. It was suggested that the overcooking was an anomaly though a number of patrons at the table of six beside us were having the same challenges with their ribs. The chef offered a sauce which tasted pretty much like mum's Sunday gravy (though it was said to be the aforementioned Red Wine and Garlic sauce). Regardless, it did little to improve the taste or experience and I couldn't finish my meal. Again, Moa was a star. She apologized profusely and she and the chef decided to take the item off our bill (not our intention but a more than suitable solution). The saving grace was a fantastic dessert (Vanilla, Bourbon and Caramelised Hazelnut Cheesecake) which was all kinds of goodness and a remarkable beer called Orinoco Stout. The best part of our experience was the service. We absolutely recognize that the main course mishap wasn't the fault of our server, but Moa handled it with sincere contrition and did her very best (along with the chef) to remedy the situation. High marks also go to the other servers on the periphery who performed with equal grace and courtesy; great service goes a long way to customer satisfaction. So how did things go so wrong? From a food standpoint, we learned that the kitchen is not run by the restaurant but operates as a separate franchise entity called FIRED UP situated in an adjacent building. I'm far from an expert in this field but past experience and common sense suggests that this disconnect between serving staff and kitchen staff may have resulted in the dining mishap. The servers certainly know their drinks very well -- I'd like them to at least have a rudimentary idea of the food that they're offering their customers -- how it's prepared and how it should taste. Or else how will they know if things go wrong. We were told many times that MacGregor's hasn't been open very long yet they seemed to be throwing all kinds of things at the wall to see if they stick -- along with dinner service there was a pianist/singer performing as well as a whiskey tasting session. All you need for success is to offer damned good food and sincere customer service; all the bells and whistles in the world won't hide a bad meal. You've already got the great service, now if you could just tighten up the menu. read more

I'm leaving the same review in the three places we attempted to eat dinner on July 21, 2019. I'd read about MacGregor's bar & was excited to try a Sunday night with the live music. But I never read YOU NEED A RESERVATION. So that's my first bit of advice. We walked in without a reservation at 6 pm and were laughed right out onto the street. 2nd try at Scotch and Rye. Few customers and no Scotch or Rye on the drink menu should have scared us off. But we stuck it out- ordered and an HOUR later we were told a technical "glitch"had caused our food order to not be placed with the kitchen.. but a good sever should have figured it out a bit sooner--to their credit they at least they comped us a few drinks. 3 time a charm- next door at George's. We finally got dinner! The food was good- didn't all come out at the same time and wasn't exactly what we ordered but we were starving and laughing about our adventures in Inverness we didn't much care. A cynic might think the restaurant industry in Inverness don't like Americans and or tourists in I which is to bad because this group of Americans eat/drink/tip and leave reviews. Went here for a late lunch (3pm) on our first day in Inverness and had no issue finding a table for 4. Friendly staff, great recommendations for beer and food was delicious. Our table enjoyed the fish and chips, haggis nachos, chicken burger and daily soup. Good sized portions. Would seriously just come back for the friendly bartenders. read more

We had an excellent experience at MacGregors! We were referred over by our tour guide. She suggested we try the burger and also told us about the whiskey tasting and music experience. I'll admit that a burger sounded a little meh, while traveling, we usually try and have regional dishes. Now that I've said that, holy moly, GET THE BURGER! Best damn burger ever. Cheddar cheese melted on top, the meat was so flavorful and the chips and slaw were just perfect. We also had the venison wrapped in pancetta, excellent! And the veggie parcels, with a soy/honey/miso dipping sauce, so freaking good. Now, had it just been the meal, we would have left, happy little larks, posted a glowing review and hoped to find ourselves back there someday. But, we also opted for the whiskey and music, which turned out to be even better than the food. Which is saying something, because, holy moly, the FOOD! OK, on to the whiskey. Normally this event is hosted by Bruce and Davy, Davy was not in house, so we had Jerry. Bruce is the host, he walks you through 5 whiskies, not in a hoity toity way, but in a fun way. He tells stories about the history of the highlands, the '45 and current state - all woven in with music that is so beautiful and sincere, we actually shed a few tears. We were with a pretty incredible tour group, with a ton of awesome activities and experiences, but this one evening turned out to be a huge highlight of our overall experience.
