MacGregor's is a genuinely fun place right in the heart of Inverness, and it definitely has a proper buzz! We stopped by and immediately loved the vibe. It was incredibly busy, which speaks to its popularity, but the atmosphere was electric. We managed to snag a spot on the good patio, which is a great place to people-watch and enjoy a dram or a pint when the weather cooperates. The major highlight of the evening was the great live music. It really elevates the experience and makes MacGregor's feel like a true Highland pub. They boast an excellent selection of local beers and ciders, making it easy to sample some fantastic regional beverages. For food, I tried the chicken sandwich, and it was good--satisfying and well-made, hitting the spot perfectly for a pub meal.

We had a very good dinner on the restaurant side and then slipped over to the bar where we snagged seats near the musicians and enjoyed a pint while they played and played. A quite memorable evening for us in Inverness.

This place was truly excellent, the best food I had in Scotland. There's not a lot of seating there, but fortunately it was reasonably warm outside on this day, and they have a decent size outdoor eating area. You go in and order at the bar and then they give you a number and they bring it to your table. Definitely recommend the Scottish sampler, complete with haggis and cullen skink - these things may have a bad name but they sure are tasty. A great supply of beers on tap and a solid Scotch whiskey list to boot. If you find yourself in Inverness, be sure to squeeze yourself into MacGregor's.

We stopped here on recommendation from our Airbnb hosts. This place is TINY and we only got a seat at a small table near the bar. We ordered drinks ( they were ok) and two appetizers. Both appetizers were ICE COLD - mozzarella sticks and the loaded fries. The chicken was cold which l was hesitant to eat. Would not recommend to other tourists.

Had a grand time at MacGregor's in Inverness on a rainy Friday evening. We sat down at a table and made some friends, drank the Dog Falls stout and enjoyed a proper evening at the pub! We had dinner there (I enjoyed the Steak and Ale Pie served with yummy crisp vegetables and chips) and then they booted us from the booth to make way for the musicians--a lively mix of 3 fiddles, bagpipes and guitar. Bruce McGregor, bar owner, was playing with the band! We snagged a spot at the bar next, which was a great way to see and hear the live music and avoid the cold and damp outside in the rainy beer garden. Great evening!

Great atmosphere, great food & great entertainment! Get there early for a table/seating. Friendly group - everyone's welcomed.

Located in city centre Inverness is MacGregors, which claims to be the best bar in Scotland. I'm not so sure about the claim of being the best, but it'd definitely be in the conversation for the upbeat atmosphere and live music. There is very limited indoor seating, as many come for the live music. There is an outdoor patio if you can't get a seat inside, but you won't have direct views of the band, and it does tend to get chilly at night in northern Scotland. For food, we ordered the mozzarella sticks, fish & chips, and chicken burger. While the mozzarella stick were forgettable and served with some odd spicy salsa (definitely not a marinara sauce), the meals were both delicious and of above average quality. The Lost Orchards cider they had on tap also hit the spot. While you had to order yourself at the bar and there was nobody waiting on you, the staff that took orders and brought out food were very friendly. The star of the show was definitely the live music, as the band performed a variety of songs and the crew got larger as the night progressed as new band members joined the performance. Maybe since it was my first time watching a Scottish music being performed at a pub live, but the overall experience was worthy of 5 stars. I'd recommend a visit to MacGregors Bar if you're looking for live music and fun atmosphere in Inverness.

Aside from having to sit outside amongst smokers (yes, I know it's a pub) this place was bustling for a Tuesday night. Super friendly patrons and hosts! The honey chicken on top of fries was super delicious (don't recall name).

A completely outstanding experience. Visiting Scotland we stumbled on this amazing restaurant...and on carving day. Do not miss this place on a Sunday. You will not be disappointed. Lively, music, and outstanding roast and food!!!

What a fun place! Service was good etc. there's a dining room if you want the dining experience with full menu- we just got chips and sticky toffee pudding at the bar area. Fun people, lively atmosphere but the music wasn't blaring - so it was a nice time. I got coffee - husband got beer - teens got hot chocolate. Overall wonderful!

    Whiskey tasting

100% YES! This is the best pub in all of the highlands! We went for the whiskey tasting and stayed till the lights were on! The musician (and incredible storyteller) Davy Holt made the night totally unforgettable. His charisma and powerful voice really blew us away. We had dinner there too- I had the lentil soup and my husband had something he loved, but we can't remember what. We had SO MUCH FUN! We made a bunch of friends, sang and danced the night away, all the bartenders were super friendly and helpful, and we wished this could be our neighborhood bar! Do not miss this one, and tell Davy we say hello from Philadelphia!

We spent one of our 4 nights in town at Hootananny...It's a lively spot with a full restaurant and bar and good whiskey recommendations from the bartender. On this night, it was a jam, as opposed to a frontal performance...these jams you'll find throughout Scotland are really not performances, but musicians who gather together in the front of the venue, sitting in a circle, typically with a group of them with their backs to the audience, who play for each other, for the sheer and obvious love of the collaborative music. They ran through all kinds of traditional Scottish tunes, occasionally with instruments put aside to let a couple of them sing a cappella. It was a beautiful experience to watch "performers" immersing themselves in each other's music, with us, the audience, grateful, if not incidental, receivers of it. They've got a decent whisky selection too, and, as I found throughout Scotland, every bartender seemed knowledgeable in what was offered and willing to have a conversation to help guide you to what you might want to drink that night. (I had a Bunnahabain dram.) If you've got a few nights in town, this is one of the main 3 venues you should check out...the other two we experienced were more direct performances, also good, but to experience a musician's jam circle like this, is truly a wonderful and unique experience to have when in town.

Considering their reputation is on the music, it was perhaps better than I expected. Several good local beer choices on draft, though I wish they had something on cask. The World Cup Game was on so it was lively and fun. I will tell you, this was some of the best seasoned food we had the entire time we were in the UK (two weeks). Finally we didn't feel the need to add salt to something. The flavor was just spot on. My husband had the beer steak pie with puff pastry, I had the Cullen skink, my son had a pizza (I can't remember if it was on the kids' menu or not) and my daughter had a Caesar salad with chicken, which she eats a lot at home and had been craving. Both the skink and the stew were perfectly flavored! The fish in the stew was tender and so was the steak in the pie. If we ever go back to Inverness, we will be sure to be returning to Johnny Foxes. You'll see. Downstairs: Never been in, seems a bit 'Local' In the sense of 'Royston Vasey' rather than ' Rovers Return' though. But upstairs: A total gem. A 100% Music dive of the best sort. Bar is tiny, but still hosts some of the best LIVE music to be had in Inverness and beyond. True sometimes its comedically awful. But sometimes its totally amazing. You never know what you're gonna get, and that's part of the fun, More hits than misses in my experience. Place can be quiet (but is never empty), or it can be completely packed out. It has a totally amazing friendly buzz either way. One day you'll get a 6 piece Death Metal band, next it could be some grey haired R&B growler, or a Cornish folk duo. At the weekends, don't be surprised to see 18 year old Goths drinking snakebite next to bearded kilties with Guiness who - but for the smoking ban - would doubtless be chuffing away on pipes. Mucially its mainly quieter Folky type stuff during week nights, and touring wannabes and up and coming bands playing the weekends. The size of the place means that the acts are mixed in with everyone else. Friendly, scruffy, and very chilled out, this is the bar where the Proclaimers hung out before they made it big.
