Front of The Loft

I was invited to stay at Pitlochry for a few days, and was amazedly and surprised to say the least, reading about The Loft reaching the number one spot on an international travel website, naturally it had to be tried. Reopened within the last six months Stuart(chef) and Jennifer(host) have transformed what was previously a venue for pub grub, into a heavenly treat for the palate. On par with the top restaurants Edinburgh has to offer, The Loft is not too far away from the city so you can get there within two hours. The only downside is it's upstairs thus the name, so there are no other means of getting to it. But a spacious area decked in creams and mocha with wooden beams and walls featuring local artists. Best thing is you don't need to be a local resident of the River Tilt park to visit, just give them a ring to book, or beware large groups who don't you may be turned away. There are enough tables in two rooms with comfy leather seats or benches built into alcoves adorned with tartan. With some other folks in, made it feel nearly full but even on a rainy night it wasn't too warm. You might even see your food being prepared behind the bar area because it's mostly open plan. For the better though the ambience was just right, not too noise so you couldn't hear, easy listening music in the background. We were settled into a cosy spot near the air balcony so we could see outside. Their balcony also has a few tables complete with shady umbrellas for those balmy summer brunches. But I don't think it is used for evening meals? From locally sourced ingredients, what Stuart and Jennifer produce is a first class meal of immense flavour, that your tongue might do a merry dance as taste buds go into overdrive. Some of our party tried starters consisting of chicory leaves, sitting on top of a beet flavoured dew, paired with thinly sliced medium rare venison. Mains were battered fish and homemade chunky fries, served on a slate with creamy mayo. Others had beef with a variety of veggies. A bottle of Grenache Rose completed the drinks, but I felt it might have been better pairing the fish with a lighter white, or for the folks enjoying The beef a deeper full bodied red. We stayed for about three hours never felt rushed, but we had enjoyed one starter, three mains, two desserts including a large cheese board, two beers and a bottle of wine, so on average the three of us paid around £45 each. The Loft is Open from 10-ish till 10-ish is well worth the hype. I've made a note to come back and sample the rest of their menu, that is if they are still at River Tilt park in a few years...perhaps they will expand to Perth or Edinburgh?

The potato stuffed with chicken and apple. It was so good!

I go every year to Scotland and make this one of my stops to visit and eat. I love these people…read moreand the food along with the groceries are fresh! The farm is self sustaining and clean.

**WARNING** This is a lengthy review and you WILL be hungry after reading!…read more Just outside Perth and a short detour from the A9 lies Tibbermore (I know, cute right!), a typical 'blink and you'll miss it' kinda place, but really, just don't blink cos this place is awesome! It really does have it all - fresh fruit and vegetables all leafy and colourful, a gin lovers corner, wonderful cheese and meats deli, health foods section including a variety a GF flours, breads and oatcakes (try their own oatcakes, completely different from the brand that sounds like Talkers but sooo much tastier!), tray upon tray of freshly laid eggs...I could go on but you get the idea! And that's just the food section! They also have a glorious gift section where I could've easily spent a small fortune. Everything from kitchen gadgets to picnic baskets, kiddie gifts to Emma Bridgewater pottery and everything in between. I spotted a few local producers too which I loved as I always like to see locals businesses supporting each other. Then there's the café/restaurant which has a few outdoor tables but plenty inside if they're taken; the day I visited it was glorious but somehow we got lucky and got a table outside (my shoulders can prove that #scottishtan!...). The menu has lots of tasty options incorporating as much of their own produce as possible - I opted for the Homemade Chicken Liver pate while my parents both had the Smoked Ayrshire Ham & Gloagburn Curried Banana Chutney sandwich (Dad went hunting for the ham to buy later he was that impressed!). Once decided, we had to go inside and order at the counter; I'm not sure if this was due to us sitting outside or standard practise as when we asked for a second round of coffees (and some more oatcakes for me as I'd ran out!), a waitress came over with one of those electronic hand-held thingys to take that order so I wondered why she couldn't have done that initially, anyway, not really a star-affecting issue. Pricewise, we were just shy of £10/head for a sandwich and coffee (exc our 2nd coffee round), a tad steep but it's all fresh and local produce so I don't mind paying that when you know you're getting good quality (and it really was!). Given it's out-the-way location it's a busy wee place but worth the trip as you could easily spend a couple of hours here eating and browsing. There's plenty parking available and even a small play area for kids. Farm Shops like this don't come around too often, which is a shame as they really are wee gems of places!

It's such a great atmosphere with a cozy area to eat in front of a wood-burning cast iron stove. It's a very pet friendly place as well. We saw a cute doggie enjoying the warmth inside the bar. We ordered the chicken casserole special. It was good despite the price being a little too high for what it was. I'd expect to have a puff pastry on top of it for that price. Although, it was very tasty even though the presentation was not all that great. It was served with mash potatoes instead of chips. It was good. They have a big variety of local taps. I went with the Jock Pumpkinhead Stout from Loch Lomond Brewery while my husband had the Man O'Hoy from Orkney Brewery. We were very happy with our local brew selections. It was a very nice atmosphere for lunch. If you're a Harry Potter fan, then you may want to take that hike from here to the filming location of Hagrid's Hut. The pathway up to the hut is just a short walk from the inn. The inn itself is kind of unique with the ice ax and ski décor. It reminded me a little of Ketchikan for some reason. Maybe it was the 5 Points of Contact photo that I saw by Peter Daynes. There's also a display of ice axes designed by Hamish MacInnes. Our tour guide in Ketchikan was coincidentally named Hamish. Wow, everything does come around full circle. It all turned out to be a nice lunch experience in the Highlands.
