The server, I could tell, truly loved his job. He was personable, knew everything there is to know about the menu. Gave suggestions and actually had a conversation w/ us w/in reason. He made it seem like we were the only ones he was serving that night. We even received an "on the house" a glass a wine to pair with our meal. I felt the birthday energy and love. The folks next to me even were chatting us up. The food is delicious! Taken right from the grill to our table. Chicken appetizer is fireeeeee! The chicken shishik and Romanian beef kebab hit the spot. I was thinking the portion size could be some what bigger but I was surprisingly full after I was done the dessert. Also the brown sugar vanilla taste better (Personal preference) than the tehina soft serve. Presentation and politeness was met. Overall great experience.

Ordering is made simple, you choose one thing from the grill, like spicy lamb kofte, chicken shishik, or shawarma-spiced cauliflower, and let the restaurant handle the rest. You then learn why everyone is so cheery--the salatim is endless! More than 10 veg-friendly entry dishes, served in these small stainless-steel cups, a big bowl of fresh hummus and pitas just out of the oven. When you run out, just order more. Whatever is left over, you take with you. It's all included in the price you see next to the item from the grill. The salatims all come out together but eat too much and you'll be too full for the main; eat too little and you'll feel like you got ripped off, with no time to really enjoy them. The restaurant paces out the courses nicely and the salatims go well with the mains so they leave everything out for you. The dessert was last, a soft serve ice cream for each guest--good, but not the thing to visit Laser Wolf for. Couple things worth knowing: The price of the grill items are shocking at first, before you realize how much is included. For instance, the chicken shishik or eggplant are each close to $40. But I promise you won't leave hungry. My partner and I ordered just one thing from the grill, the restaurant adds something like $23 to the bill because everything else remains the same. Unlimited salatims and a dessert for each. It then feels like one of you is paying $23 for the salatims and dessert, which is a lot in my opinion, but the fact that the restaurant allows (even encourages) you to take the salatims to go and even refills the portion for you, I think makes the price reasonable. There are also other items to order à la carte. We got the halloumi for an additional $16 and it was excellent, probably the best item of the night. There's a 20% service charge included. The restaurant has this written in a big box on the menu and says their employees are paid at least $15/hr. I'm usually against forced tips but I strongly support folks earning at least $15/hr. The service was excellent all around, timely, friendly and attentive and deserving of every penny. In the end we paid just over $100 for 2 people, including the service charge, and left very full and very happy.

The "meat" did not taste like turkey AT ALL. It tasted like cardboard. I didn't get a close look at the fake meat until towards the end - it was definitely not turkey. NO, it wasn't a veggie patty - that's not what I mean. I need to mention that the place is disgusting. They make it impossible to wash one's hands in the ladies room. Only cold water comes out, it only comes out for ONE second and then good luck getting paper towels to emit from the dispenser. My server has serial killer vibes. He never gave me his name, and both times I asked, he just walked away. He kept walking away in the middle of doing his job. He assumed I wanted fries and started walking away. I stopped him and said that I want my burger with salad. I always order the turkey burger with salad and even the salad was not fresh - something I had never experienced before. Not once did my server ask me if everything was okay. Like an IDIOT, I didn't complain, and I even tipped him. Before my food had arrived at my table, I spoke with the manager about something else on the menu - and he was so corporate, that it creeped me out. I mention this, because this is the other reason I will not return. I spoke with some friends about this after the fact, and they too said that they were disgusted with their recent experiences there. Oh well, I guess they had a good run.

Wesley was awesome, really knowledgeable about everything on the menu, was fun to chat with, and made delicious cocktails! All of the dishes were incredible, so unique and fresh! I understand it's a seasonal menu, so these were our must haves off the summer/fall menu: - skate cheeks - so tender and had a perfect char - spizzulus with rohan duck, porcini, chestnut and marjoram - this was our favorite dish of the night. Their homemade pasta had the perfect chewiness and the flavor with the duck was so complex - trofie alla carlofortina with pesto, tuna belly and datterini tomato - another incredible homemade pasta, the tuna was cooked perfectly and so fresh - gelato - pistachio and chocolate gelato was so creamy and flavorful The restaurant was beautiful and really grand feeling. It was large but also felt intimate. We sat at the bar which is our favorite and had a blast with Wesley! Definitely put this high on your list!

The hostess took our coats (a nice touch!) and then a rotation of two servers explained the specials and we ordered. I love that the menu is on the shorter side and they rotate the pizza offerings, so even if you're visiting on a regular basis, you'll always be able to try something new. Additionally, when a menu is only about 2 pages, you know everything on those two pages is top notch, as was the case at Pizzeria Beddia. This evening we got the meatballs (didn't take a photo, was too excited, but they were HUGE and excellent) and the beef, pork and veal balls with a rich red sauce was outstanding. Came in an order of 2 but one was plenty for each of us. The Pizza we got had potatoes on it, and we added sausage per the servers recommendation, and it was cooked perfectly and all of the flavors blended so well together. We are so lucky to have an amazing (and nationally recognized!) pizza spot in the neighborhood and it's always nice when you can walk in without a reservation from time to time.

Our staff were always looking out for us, and making suggestions and recommendations throughout our entire meal, and even helping us with some tips to better enjoy our meal (they saw me sweating in response to the Thai spice). Definitely made this a top-notch experience. Ambience here is great! Love places with *real* greenery indoors and a lot of natural light, like this place, and seats and tables were spread out sufficiently such that there was a nice background chatter without feel too infringed upon by other conversations. We ordered a good variety to share. The spare ribs and the glass noodles dishes were amazing! Everything came out as ready, but it was on a good cadence such that we were enjoying things as they were ready, hot and fresh. I'm no expert on legitimacy of flavors and dishes, but honestly this feels like the most legit stuff I've had in the Thai wheelhouse in a while. To boot, even though we said no to dessert because we had other plans, they came with a candle on a plate to still share birthday wishes. A nice touch! Definitely a fancy occasion kind of place in my books, but I'd definitely make a return trip on another occasion!

KenScale: 8.25/10 Visit: April 2026…read more One restaurant in Philadelphia that I had wanted to visit for a long time was Kalaya, which was featured in the Chef's Table documentary on Netflix in 2024. I was moved by the personal story of the chef Chutatip "Nok" Suntaranon in the show, and of course my wife Jun and I would never say no to some delicious Thai food. On our recent trip to Philly to celebrate our anniversary, Jun and I finally got to check out Kalaya (which is named for the chef's mother) on a rainy Sunday for lunch before driving back home. We were very pleased with the lunch at Kalaya, which in our mind really showcased the Thai spicy flavor well. The menu at Kalaya features Southern Thai dishes inspired by the chef's family history. The colorful display of the dishes stood out throughout our meal, but more importantly we also really liked the spicy flavor that felt genuine and soulful. The cute flower-shaped Shaw Muang dumplings with ground chicken were highly recommended by our server and the kick from the Thai chili set the right tone right away. We were also fond of the poached shrimp and cabbage salad with coconut cream (Yum Kalum Bplee) for the delightfully crispy texture. For the main dishes, we ordered one stir fry and one curry. If you have to order just one dish at Kalaya, I can't recommend the colossal crab stir fry with egg (Pu Pad Pong Karee) enough. Served with jasmine rice, this dish offered complex flavor of spicy, salty, sour and sweet that was quite unlike anything I had encountered in a while. As Jun and I were savoring this awesomeness, I wished that I could've eaten this every week. The goat and lamb curry (Gaeng Pae), served with pickled cucumbers and coconut turmeric rice, was also impressive, with rustic curry broth that suddenly hit my tongue with spice blend. Despite that powerful impact on my palate, I couldn't stop myself from enjoying the curry, especially with the coconut turmeric rice that neutralized the curry's spicy kick somewhat. We also shared a side dish of stir-fried local mushrooms (Hed Pad Kratiam) that was solid as well. We were running out of room in our stomach after cleaning up the savory dishes, so we settled with ordering a Thai iced coffee to go before hitting the road. Not surprisingly, Kalaya is a very popular restaurant in the Philly dining scene so getting a reservation in advance is essential. I was a bit nervous on our visit as we were running rather late (by around 30 minutes) from picking up our car from the parking lot, yet the restaurant was gracious enough to honor our reservation. The bright and lively dining space offered quite a fitting background to the character of the dishes. There is a full bar with Thai-inspired cocktails and concise wine list designed to complement the Thai spices well. Kalaya definitely lived up its hype as one of the most important restaurants in Philadelphia; Jun and I were glad to have visited and would be more than happy to come back for our next visit to the city.
