Had fish and chips from here last night, it was 9.20 euro I think. Pretty pricey you might think, but you get a lot of food here. ( see the picture I uploaded ). Unfortunately far to much food for me to eat in one sitting. The chips were crisp and not soggy, the fish was fresh but came in four pieces so a lot of batter. I prefer more fish than batter myself. Inside is a bit nasty to be honest, more of a takeaway I would say. The wait staff were not particularly happy either. Finally and this is the main reason its 2 stars for me, the food was stacked on a tiny plate. It was like playing a game of food Jenga. I literally couldn't eat anything without something falling off. Add to that some dodgy brand of tomato ketchup which was frankly not nice, I really didn't enjoy the experience. I think this would probably be 3-4 stars for a take out as you could share a portion between two of you ( making it quite cheap ) and you could provide your own condiments. But I wouldn't recommend sitting in and unless you like large portions you might want to share. You might say that I am being a bit harsh as this is a take out, but the prices were not that cheap. For 9 euro I could get a decent meal from quite a few places which would be a lot better. read more

Best chips in Dublin! Oh there's something so special about when you open up the paper and the vinegar evaporates and goes up your nose and makes you cry... or perhaps it's just that you are about to have these chips that brings a tear to your eye. These chips are special... they sell other things too but it's all about the chips... oh the fish is quite good.... but the chips... the chips. OK you couldn't eat them every day but every so often a takeaway from Burdocks is good for your soul. I'm not wild about the restaurant part, maybe it's because it's a bit more expensive or maybe it's because Burdocks chips should be eaten while you're walking up a road with your eyes streaming and your fingers burnt! This establishments definitely holds quite a few charms, and is a great example of the cuisine known as Irish fast Food. The deal of the day is a 5 Euro options for chips, a soda, and either two sausages, or four pieces of fish. The fish was super greasy, but what would you expect. I actually wasn't a fan; however, I think it was due to the grease. I'm sure a much more refine veteran of fried fish would be very pleased. I'm gonna try the sausages soon as they are probably more my style. The chips were delicious! I know, they're chips, but it was my favorite part of the meal. It was a healthy heaping, and drizzling those bad boys with salt, vinegar and ketchup made my day. You also get a soda can which is a nice touch. Not at all bad for the price. I'm still getting used to Irish culture, and I think sitting by to 60-70 year old women whose language would make sailors blush made this an unforgettable experience. read more

I've been to this shop twice now. The first time, I had fish, which was quite crunchy, but still a bit on the average side. I ordered "fish bites," which I thought would be like little nuggets, but they were actually quite full portions, I thought. I wasn't crazy about the chips, but then, I'm not much of a chip person. A person at another table had a burger, and I thought I'd give it a try sometime. I did! Retuning another day, I tried a regular burger. When it arrived, it made me think of these old commercials for Wendy's, where the tagline was, "Where's the beef?" (See the photo that I posted.) The bun was large, so the patty on my burger looked small. To be fair, I looked it up on their menu and a regular burger is 2 oz. but only costs €2.20 or €2.40 with cheese. A smaller burger is just perfect for me, though. Do wish they had pickles!. Still, the hamburger was nicely cooked and was tasty. The seating area is clean and features the story of Burdock's on one wall. The atmosphere, though, is pretty anonymous. Overall, I'd say that Burdock's is decent enough and prices are ok, but I wouldn't make it a destination. read more

Yesterday, I went for a walk with a friend and we were saying we should grab some takeaway for dinner. I'd secretly been craving fish and chips, but didn't want to push my opinion onto my friend so I said we'd leave it up to chance. So as we were walking by Leo Burdock's I politely said, oh what about this, my friend said that it had been a bit expensive the last time we'd gotten dinner from there, so maybe not. That's when I saw it, a big ole sign in the window: Haddock and Chips, 2 for the price of 1, €8.90 !!! That's two big ole plates of fish and chips for nearly the same cost of a meal at McDonald's how could this not sway my friend. It did of course and we decided to eat in the shop, which is retro-styled but still amazingly clean. The fish was out within a few minutes of us sitting down and the plate was overflowing with chips and lovely battered Haddock. I don't know if I will this to happen or I just got lucky, but I'm sure glad I told myself I wanted fish and chips! read more

I visited the Christchurch branch exploring Dublin's fish and chip options. The store had no seating, but was a short walk from St Patrick's Park, which was a very pleasant place to sit and eat. I had the classic batter sausage and chips. The chips were great texture and quality. Flavour was decent but not perfect for me (something to do with oil choices?). Sausage was great. Disappointed not to have the option to purchase a pie. read more

People love this place (including celebrities) there are many names on a plaque on the wall. The portion was HUGE & BIG enough to share for a family of 3. The only thing is that they drench it with vinegar. I'm an American & I love my fried fish with lemon & malt vinegar which they didn't have either. I guess the Irish are content with their fried fish with plain white vinegar, but they don't know what they're missing! Malt & lemon make it sooooo much better:) read more

I made it halfway through before I needed to give up - as I feared for my arteries(I may have actually started to sweat grease, as well). I've had fish and chips enough times now to know it can be served with the batter not soaked with cooking oil. But alas this is what I got on my visit to Leo Burdocks, Rathmines. The chips were ok, nothing to write home about. There was a huge amount of food on my plate, which was a small plate. This made for hard work cutting into the fish while trying not to knock the rest of the food onto the table. The ketchup was very inferior. I must have left more than half of what was on my plate behind. The sit down area was a bit depressing too, while the staff did not look to happy to be working there. This did not improve the atmosphere in the place. I don't see the fuss about Leo Burdocks and I definitely have had better chipper chips elsewhere. It was an overpriced and disappointing visit. read more

I began putting down the foundations relatively early. "God, did you see the size of the main course I got? Apparently that's an adult portion. Like an adult human and not an adult chihuahua!" And so I began preparing Mrs M for the "Yeah, I think I'm definitely going to need chips...unless you want to see me on next year's Trocaire box". We had ventured out for a meal and then on for a few drinks, whilst trying to pacify me with a view of the Champions League final. With our places of choice full by the time we made it in, we decided to venture back out the way we came and ended up in Rody Bolands for the night. The night ended and as we walked home, she decided she didn't need to see me on next year's Trocaire box and in we went. "Chips....oh and a battered sausage, please". the service was actually quite pleasant. "What time do you close at on a Saturday night" prompted a genial conversation from the lady behind the counter. Then she produced the chips and sausage and away we went. II'm thinking of a 3.5 star rating for the place. The chips are nice but at just under 3, they're a little pricier and not that much better than my 'local' chipper. I haven't been disappointed by them but at the same time, I won't be going out of my way for them. read more

The original branch on Werburgh Street in the city centre is in all the guidebooks, ensuring that there's always a long line of folk from far away places queuing and getting in the way of us Dubs procuring our coveted fish and chips as quickly as possible. In Rathmines however, its just locals, but for some reason the queues are just as long here.... But you can be assured that the wait is worth it, and the vinegary, greasy aroma you are tantalized with in the queue only serves to make you more appreciative of that first crispy bite. The fresh cod is the most famous and popular order, but the lemon sole is damn good too. Order your chips with or without crispy bits - little bits of deep fried batter mixed in. Just how filling can take away be? This place will let you know! I regularly gorge down the food from this good ol chipper as I spend quite a bit of time in a friend of mines who just happens to live around the corner(lucky her!!!). It can feel quite pricy when you consider €8.90 for a haddock and chips but in comparison to the competition the little extra spend is well invested. It actually fills you, as opposed to a say McDonalds which merely pastes over the hunger for a while. It's like decorating a room, Burdocks will do the whole job whereas a Mackey D's might only do a wall before you realise that you may need more! The stinging vineger as well as the fact they wrap the chips as opposed to the bag em option adds to the charm! The staff are friendly and chatty, frequently playing and chatting with my daughter while we wait. It oozes old school but not in a dingy way with it's fresh face. Personal opinion, Dublin needs more Burdocks!!! read more

Yesterday was National Fish and Chips Day. I didn't realise that it was actually for a charity. There you go. I keep forgetting about this rather odd holiday, so was delighted when one of my clients told me that they were going to get loads of fish and chips at their chipper. I was back in the centre and thought about going to Beshoff's, but the crowd was mighty and thought better of it. Then I was on my way home from a paddle and really hungry, so I said why not. Leo B's would be open. And sure enough they were. It was quite busy but I managed to get my order in quickly and got my dinner to go. When I got home, I found a lovely big piece of cod and a decent enough portion of chips (though I'll be honest, not a big chip fan). Really impressive. And it was delicious. Ate everything but the box and bag. Yes, a little greasy. But who said fish and chips were healthy?! Nice to be cheeky once in a while. read more

Rathmine's branch of the time-honoured Irish establishment claims itself to be 'Ireland's Oldest Chipper', a sign boldly reads this valiant statement outside the front door, already setting itself quite the precedent. I didn't find the interior to be comfortable but cold-hearted looking - dark green (not the classic bottle green but rather a shade you'd be likely to find in a dew pond), but then after all Leo's does serve takeaway food so the furnishings would not take precedence over the cuisine. I don't think I have ever waited to eat such revered fish and chips before now; they really were built up to be luscious as well as lavish in their quality. Don't get me wrong I did enjoy my meal but possibly because of all the hype that was tied in with this particular dining experience I was left disenchanted considering the well-regarded reputation of Leo's that preceded my visit. For €12.50 I ordered 4 Lemon Sold Gougons and a portion of chips and a diet coke. The breadcrumbs of the gougons were nicely seasoned with cayenne pepper giving a satisfying punch to the perfectly crisp outer layer. They were accompanied by appetizing chips that were so hot the vinegar evaporated to create an intoxicating aroma so compelling it made me want to eat the chips even faster. The meal, like I say was pleasing but I was certainly not wowed. I would recommend taking your order outside and not eating in. There are really no benefits to sitting inside, even the table service does not go beyond them taking your order as you have to go and collect your meal from a window looking into the kitchen after the chef shouts it out. Take your meal outside and take comfort in it in the colder temperatures. You'll appreciate it a lot more this way. read more

Just ordered a steak burger after my friend recommended it. I normally wouldn't order burgers from there as the meats terrible quality. The steak burgers over 7e tho and has the word "steak" in its name so I was expecting good quality meat. The whole delivery came to 21e. Not cheap. When my burger was delivered I was very very disappointed. It was 2 normal burger pattys stacked on top of each other. Two of the same cheap looking meat pattys that they use for their standard burger. That kind of 1980s Ireland cheap chipper meat that you wouldn't even find in a supermarket. 7euro for that. I figured they ran out of steak burgers so sent me that instead. I rang them and they insisted they were steak burgers but smaller ones as they didn't have the standard one so sent me 2. If I'm paying a lot for a STEAK burger then I'm expecting quality meat. Not that cheap stuff. I won't be ordering from there again mainly due to them insisting it was a steak burger. read more
