Leo Burdock may have opened its doors in 1913, and I get it -- seasonings were scarce, the world was bracing for war in 1914, and flavor wasn't exactly the priority back then. But baby, it's 2025, and we have options now. Please... update the recipe. Maybe I'm not a fish and chips connoisseur, but I am someone who knows good food -- and this was giving B for Basic. The fish was fresh, sure, but the flavor? MIA. Apparently, the classic recipe is just butter, flour, and fish... but for my Caribbean palette, it just wasn't suitable. I need some spice, some depth, something! This felt more like a nod to history than a celebration of flavor. Bottom line: it's a piece of Dublin history, not a culinary destination. Cute to try once, but please don't bring this to a family gathering unless you want side-eyes and silence.

I heard about this place because it's apparently the longest running chipper in Dublin. I knew I needed to try some authentic fish and chips while I was here and while I wasn't blown away, I was glad I tried it. The inside is super small and is takeaway only. The menu is pretty typical with different chipper classics. The food was packed away quickly and with care and was in the 15 euro range. I chose to eat my fish and chips in the courtyard of the Saint Patrick's Cathedral which is just across the street. The breading on the fish was a little thicker than I prefer. It didn't have as much seasoning as I expected and the tartar sauce was really the saving grace in terms of flavor. I think I like my batter on fish to be more light and crispy than the one at Leo's. If you're in the area, give it a try since it's a staple but don't expect anything special.

Cod & chips with a tartare sauce packet. No lemons, tho :(

Fabulous fish & chips. Freshly fried, crispy coat and juicy meat. Tartare sauce needed to be requested otherwise I'd have missed it. Four stars because no lemons, which for me is a bummer having any when eating fried fish. Busy but friendly staff. Small and clean place mostly for takeout.

A takeout spot that is one of the oldest chip shops in Dublin. It's a no frills joint with excellent portions, quality, and reasonable prices. The chips were very good as was the fish. For a true experience, get the curry sauce which is a nice complement to their fish and chips. The battered sausage was also great and a nice compliment to the meal. Overall, a great Dublin food experience even if you have to find a bench to eat it on.

Cod and chips in their original takeaway state.

It is worth the walk to the original location at 2 Werburgh Street, Christchurch, D8 to get the stuff that fish and chip dreams are made of. It is takeaway only, which proved more difficult than I thought it would be to consume, but that was the authentic experience I wanted so made do enjoying the best fried fish while walking around Dublin. 100% get it with the salt and vinegar, ask for the the tarter sauce as well.

Service was good but the food was bland, dry, and overpriced. When you order/pay you're issued a little wooden knife and fork and one small cocktail napkin. The food was delivered to your table and the wait was short. You're expected to clean up after yourself and there's a fast turnover so the tables all need a wipe down. And they don't serve beer. We ate here due to their ads on the building, which were impressive. There's historical value here and the food may have been good once.

Best Fish and Chips ever... Wanted some Fish and Chips while we were in Dublin, this location was around the corner from our hotel and we decided to get a snack, large portion enough for two of us and a very reasonable price. Cooked fresh and fast. Staff was very friendly and attentive. Would go back again and again. Highly recommended.

    Classic fish & chips!

An absolute classic worth the hype! The fish & coops are great! The wine place is that of a great, classic chippy, and that's refreshing in an era of modern, over-fancy chip shops.

Fish and chips. Nice thick square cut chips.
    Anne W.

The chips were perfect. I'd go back everyday for these if I could. Perfect thickness. Nicely salted. Excellent with the malt vinegar. The fish is flaky and well cooked. It's noise with a crispy exterior. Could use more salt on the fish itself, but extra malt vinegar could help. No seating at the Christchurch location, so you'll need to find a nearby park or bench to consume.

    Absolutely delicious cod fish'n'chips!

Some of the best fish'n'chips I've ever had: fresh fish, very crispy batter, fast, affordable - very pleasant staff. We ate at the benches of a nearby church, as there was no seating. Highly recommend getting salt and vinegar on the fish, it highly benefits from the flavor even if you're not a vinegar lover - it's mild. While the fish was absolutely perfect, the chips weren't to my taste, not fried to a real crispiness, almost like well cooked fresh potatoes but not crispy chips. All that said, I'll definitely be back when I get the craving in Dublin.

Finally made it for the fish and chips

I had been trying to get to this place around from my hotel as soon as I passed by here. The fish and chips were very good and the guy working behind the counter is very personable. As far as one of UK's most iconic meals, I gotta say it was good but very similar quality and taste as many others I have had here in Dublin and around the world. Unfortunately they have no seating and we have experienced rain in the last few days so I was able to enjoy it when we took it back to our hotel lobby right around the corner. Surprisingly, the hotel lobby was busy most of the day but we finally got to sit and enjoy the fish and chips. What we did NOT enjoy at all was the sausage and chips. I mean who goes to a "famous" fish & Chips place and orders sausage. Well my daughter did and it was NOT good. The question was whether it was simply NOT great or just OK but the true answer is that it was NOT good. I won't put too much blame on Leo Burdock's for that, people don't come for the sausage but if you're going to put it on the menu, well you should do a bang up job [did you see what I did there :) ].

Great fish is a very traditional Irish setting. Large portion easily fed 2 of us. Loved Dublin. Would return here for a quick lunch if we go back.

Overhyped. Fresh fish but so oily and tasteless batter. I did a takeaway so did not sit and check the ambience.

The people working there were exceptionally friendly and the place was rather cozy, but the fish n chips were mediocre.

Leo Burdock's came highly recommended but unfortunately fell flat. Greasy, soggy fish and under cooked chips.

Stopped in for lunch and we're seated promptly at a table for two. Need to mention that seating is…read moreeither high top or booth and stool seating. Stools are ok but not super comfortable. Menu has a good selection of Irish dishes from seafood chowder up to lamb stew and pies. We ordered the potato soup, seafood chowder, 'banjo' burger with onion rings. The soups arrived first and the seafood chowder was loaded with huge pieces of fish, potatoes (not many) with a creamy rich base. Flavor was incredible and in itself a full meal. Served in a large crock style bowl. The potato soup was minus any whole potatoes. It was a rich creamy base with plenty of flavor and very hearty. The burger was really a double cheeseburger with plenty of cheese, grilled onions, what appeared to be a mayonnaise based sauce on a soft hamburger roll. Really tall enough that it was tough getting your mouth around it. Very well seasoned burgers and the onions were a nice touch. The onion rings were huge and had a very light batter on them. They served in a metal bowl to keep them hot. For dessert the apple crumble was ordered which was served in a large dish with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. This could have been warmer but still was good.. The 5 star rating is for the chowder as it outshone the rest of the meal although the burger was definitely a close second. Definitely will return to try other dishes when we come back to the city.

The meat and veggies were plentiful, the portion generous, and it was tasty enough but maybe on the bland side? It was served with a side of braised red cabbage which we really liked: sweet but not sour like pickled cabbage. And house-made brown stout bread, also very good. The wife had a Guinness and I, thinking it too cliché to order Guinness as a tourist in Ireland, tried a different stout whose name I've forgotten from the ample selection. But comparing the two, so much better! The menu offers a wide variety of traditional Irish dishes, more than most of the similar pubs in the area. As well as the other expected pub type food: sandwiches, burgers, etc. As for desserts, if we were hungrier, the wife might have ordered the Irish Whiskey Bread & Butter Pudding. The hubby would probably get his dessert later, as the selection was limited and neither that nor the Apple Crumble appealed. Sitting at the bar we had a more personalized experience than were we at a table. The bartender offered to take a photo of me behind the bar which I of course accepted. We made the right choice in coming here.
