Ordered fish and chips tonight from Leo Burdock. It was a disaster. I'm from the Pacific Northwest in America, where we have fish and seafood easily the equal of that in Ireland, allowing that Ireland has some specialties unique to the Atlantic. But throughout the Pacific NW, from the Northern California coast through Oregon and Washington, up through British Columbia and Alaska, there are thousands of restaurants that serve cod fish and chips. I've eaten in dozens of places over the 54 years I've lived in the Pacific NW, and the fish and chips from Leo Burdock were by far, by a long, long way, the worst I've ever had. They were so bad, I took two small bites and threw the whole meal in a lovely trash can along the river LIffey. What was so bad, you ask? When I walked in the place smelled bad, like old grease, like floors that rarely get cleaned, like things I can't even describe. In my head a small voice suggested I leave, with the thought that if the food was anything like the smell, I was in trouble. But I believed the sign, that there was something historic and epic about these fish and chips. When I ordered, I specified that I did not want salt on the chips. I have a heart condition and try to limit salt. The man who took the order repeated what I asked for and assured me "no salt". Then I waited for maybe 9 or 10 minutes. When the order was ready, the same man handed me the bag and immediately informed me it had salt. Then he gave a thumbs up and said, "it's ok?" I said, no, it's not ok. That was the start. Walking back to my hotel, I smelled the contents. They smelled like the store, not a good sign. Getting to my room, I ate one chip and took two bites of the fish. There was no real flavor. I've never had fish and chips where the fish had no flavor. Well, that's not true. The fish was also extremely greasy. So there were flavors: grease and that distinct "taste" of the restaurant that I can't really describe. And that's it. Screwed up the order, greasy food, and no flavor. The place said it was genuine Irish fish and chips. If that indeed was the Irish version, I'll stick to the Pacific NW. And if any of you reading this are going to the American west coast in the future, come to Oregon, and try the fish and chips there. See what you think. read more

Can't visit Ireland without a stop at Leo Burdock's for their famous fish n chips. The fish was crispy, flaky, and freshly fried and was perfect with some malt vinegar and tartar sauce. No. They were not the best fish n chips in Dublin. My daughter made it a point to eat fish and chips every day while we were visiting and she was not a fan either. The fish portion is HUGE. But doughy and lacking in any flavor. The small take away spot doesn't offer any small packets of malt vinegar which is an abomination. Stopped in because this place had come highly recommended from various people since I arrived in Dublin as "the best" fish and chips so I tried it. I ordered the smoked cod because it was different than just plain fish. The fish itself was pretty good, the batter seemed a little undercooked and mushy in places, it's definitley not a fish to add malt vinegar to as it's a little saltier with the smoked flavor. The fish was very dense and the batter was as well...definitely not light and crispy. The chips, for me, is a whole other story..maybe it's just the way chips are done in Ireland but the potatoes were very chunky and weren't fried crispy so they were sort of mushy and got worse as they sat. I guess maybe I've gotten more used to a shoestring type chip but this were pretty much in edible for me..you get a huge portion and maybe you can request they be fried for longer to be more crispy but at a place that specializes in chips I didn't think about that option. I'm glad I tried this place but I will keep searching for my own "best of" read more

On my most recent trip back to Ireland, my boyfriend and I stopped in for a quick bite to eat before catching our flight out of the country. The service was fast and friendly. And the portions are huge for the price. The chips really helped to soak up all of the Guinness we had drank. And their garlic sauce for dipping is out of this world. read more

I'm going to echo a few other yelpers that said this place wasn't that great. We ordered a fish and chips meal to go since there was no place, not even standing tables to eat in. We get back to our airbnb and start to dig in. The fish had no taste at all even if you put salt on it which we asked for. The fries also had no taste and had to dip it in ketchup to make it enjoyable. The fish was soggy and greasy too. It looked nice and flakey though when I cut into it. The only thing good really about my meal was that there was a lot of it. So it was more of a volume thing, then the food actually tasting good. So confused by the positive reviews and how this place is an institution. Thankfully, other fish n'chips spots we went to later redeemed the dish for us. Space and Pace: It's a tiny little shop that is strictly take out. There was a decent sized line out the door, which added to the high hopes (which were soon to be dashed). Burdock's is an institution in Dublin and one of my favourite places to visit while in Ireland. Located on a quiet street just around the corner from Christchurch Cathedral, you wouldn't think it was home to a world-rebounded fish and chip restaurant. While it is definitely a tourist trap, Burdock's harks back to an older Dublin where fish and chips were served in newspaper and the food was tasty and simple. There are no frills here, nor will you find a place to eat your food. My recommendation is to go eat in the park near the Cathedral or find a bench. The prices have definitely risen over the years but the food is consistently good and the quality is definitely there. If you are looking for authentic fish and chips in Dublin you really can't go wrong. As a side note, the food can be greasy so ask for napkins and cutlery - they have them behind the counter. read more

So, I'm eating at Bull & Castle Pub across the street from this place. I run upstairs and tried to order food. "It's gonna take 45 minutes", says the waitress. Nevermind that! I run back to the patio area downstairs and my coworker says, "Get fish'n'chips over there. It's the oldest chipper in town" While pointing at Leo Burdock, only about 30 steps away. I ordered a Fresh Cod Meal for about €9. It came out fast and hot! I went back to the the pub and opened up the meal for everyone to share. Of course most of the fish was mine, but I truly enjoyed that cod with my MetalMan Beer. This fish perfectly breaded and huge, about the size of an envelope. The chips were about 'steak fries' size. Freshly cut, crisp on the outside, hot and soft on the inside. Other than hearing the fact that it's all deep fried in lard, I gotta say, it was pretty gosh darn good!!! A few changes have occurred over the years. Originally the fish and chips were cooked in coal fired pans and wrapped in old newspapers, so that customers could eat and read the news at the same time. The menu at Leo Burdock includes a variety of burgers, smoked and breaded fish and other fried treats, but we were here for one thing: fish and chips. After seeing the massive portions on Anthony Bourdain's "No Reservations" I knew to only order one order of fish and chips to split amongst our group of three. Leo Burdock's was highly recommended by our taxi driver. We went to the Temple Bar location and had 2 orders of the fish and chips. The portions were massive as the taxi driver said they would be. The fish was a bit overcooked and somewhat dry but the breading was very good. The chips left a lot to be desired. They were undercooked and not hot. We ate at the location and there was only 1 other couple in the restaurant, so there was no reason for the chips not to be cooked properly. The servers were very cordial and helpful and delivered the food to our table. The dining area is not very large and the ambiance is just ok. They are so busy that they already have prepared fish and chips ready to go which makes the service EXTREMELY fast. As soon as I ordered, my food was in my hand. Not good, you guys! I happened to be on a walking tour and spotted a bunch of local Irish guys huddled in front of the shop on a freezing day holding boxes with steam billowing out of it. Immediately, I was like, I gotta have me some of whatever they're eating. This place must be fantastic! I asked my walking tour guide about Leo Burdock and he had said that it was notably the "best fish and chips" in Dublin. In retrospect, I realized that he never actually had a bad recommendation. So, after the walking tour, I wanted to grab something quick to eat before heading to the pubs, so I made my way towards Christ Church Cathedral (since the shop is located across the street from it). I walked in and there were already some people in line waiting to order. The menu itself is very simple- they have various type of fried fish to eat with your chips (french fries). The price is fairly reasonable and will set you back about €10-€13. They charge for ketchup, mayo, and tar tar sauce separately. But, do yourself a favor. If you decide to come here even after reading my review, please please please pay extra for several bags of ketchup, mayo, and tar tar sauce! There is absolutely no seating inside of this place. And, guess what? Dublin doesn't seem to have public benches...anywhere! And, I wasn't going to walk all the way back to Talbot (where I was staying) when I was planning to go pub hopping after my meal. So, what do I do? I found a random spot on the ground and sat with my legs crossed Indian-style and ate on the floor across the street from Leo Burdock. Yeah, people stared at me. But, I didn't care because I had a big piece of fried cod with a heap of steak fries- honestly, enough fries to keep me full for my whole trip. It was a lot. And, they wrap the whole thing in white butcher paper. Thank God I paid for a side of tar tar sauce because the fried cod was bland! The fries were so dry and it was a lot of fries. The fried cod completely lacked any sort of seasoning. There wasn't even any salt or pepper, perhaps only a squirt of lemon juice. I regretted not ordering more tar tar sauce. I also wished I had ketchup and mayo. But, at this point, I could've gone back for ketchup and mayo, but I was already sitting on the ground, and it was freezing cold...and, I looked like a hot mess eating on the floor with my food sitting on white butcher paper. Upon hearing about me going to Dublin for a week one of her suggestions was fish and chips at Leo Burdock, "the best fish and chips I've ever had". As I do love a good plate of fish and chips her suggestion was in the back of my mind. My hotel was Jury's Inn Christchurch and I always passed by Leo Burdocks on my way back to the hotel. Lucky for me they were open until 12am and after a late night viewing at a drag queen show I had quite an appetite. I remembered my co-worker's suggestion and finally got an opportunity to try Leo Burdock's for myself. Leo Burdock's is a traditional chippery where fish and chips and its variants is all they sell. All they are is a counter and they wrap your fish and chips in brown paper then place it inside a brown paper bag. What makes them special is their crispy bits. When I arrived at Leo Burdock's they were just about to close for the day and I had made it just in time for them to turn up their fryers and fry a fresh cod and some chips for me (€9.25). They prepared it in the traditional preparation with malt vinegar but unfortunately did not have any more crispy bits. I had a nice chat with two people as I was getting my order prepared. When I got back to my hotel room the cod had gotten soggy from all the oils. It was barely edible due to the grease - the skin was not crisp at all but the fish was still quite moist. The chips were of inconsistent texture with about half of the chips being crips and half of them being soggy. I was barely able to eat half my order due to how greasy it was. I must have gotten a bad batch as the original location has been operating for over 100 years, with the earliest years feeding the rebels of the 1916 rising that led to Irish independence from Britain. Since then they have expanded with several Leo Burdock's chipperies populating Dublin. Next time I'm in the area I'll go earlier in the day and will definitely add crispy bits to my order. read more

Leo Burdocks popped up as one of my searches prior to arriving in Ireland "Must eat before you die." Although it took us days to finally try it, at last we did. Ohhhh weeee, nice and oily. We definitely ordered too much, but we had no idea how big the servings were. It was good, but wished we didn't order so much of it, probably would've been even better to fight for the last bite than throw away what we didn't finish. The chips were so good, fat, soggy and lovely! I've never been a fish and chips kind of person, but this was pretty good. Delicious fish & chips made fresh, served in a paper and ready to eat. It's definitely a more than you can eat meal for under $10. The only problem we encountered was finding a place to eat it. This mom and pop shop is tiny and tucked away in a little side street with no tables or seating. We tried going across the way to a bar and they had signs out that no outside food is allowed. I even had my husband go inside the bar and ask an employee if we ordered drinks there, if we could eat out food and they said no and specifically said that if the manager sees us on camera, that we would be asked to leave. So, we found a parking garage and ate outside of it. At least we enjoyed our food hot grease-fest in the freezing cold! So often when you're traveling and searching out those "must go-to" places, you just feel like you're automatically inclined to love it. Well, believe all the other yelpers on this one. It's unfortunate too cause this was another joint recommended by the free walking tour local guide. The combo was €10.25. I like my food to be well seasoned, hell I'll admit it, I should probably lay off the salt pours. But even with the request for extra salt and vinegar, the fish and chips were so underwhelmingly underseasoned. I was being stingy and didn't want to pay extra for the side of ketchup (preposterous!), so eventually the heap of fries had too much of a mundane, boring taste that I couldn't finish them. And I am not one to leave food behind uneaten. Now based on others' experiences, one would assume that having it to-go would end up with a greasy, soggy mess. I actually brought it back to my hostel and popped it in the convection oven to crisp right back up, which is really, I think, its only saving grace. The fish was plentiful and flaky, but seriously needed some more TLC (ie. More salt, more vinegar, and fresh lemon). Re-baking it also rendered out a huge pool of oil that could clog your arteries upon sight. Overall, do it for the gram/Snapchat. It is quite an impressive portion. Traveling through Europe and had to check this place out. The reviews are good and the place definitely lives up to its reputation. It's a tiny little takeout place who only specialize in fish and chips. My only drawback on giving this place a 5 star rating is the sauces are separately charged and there is no place to sit and eat. However by the constant traffic of customers you can tell that neither of these drawbacks matter or impact how good the food is. I actually don't fancy fish and chips - usually the fries are crap or the fish is dry or the frying oil isn't the freshest, but this place was delicious. The fries were crispy on the outside and soft and fluffy on the inside. There wasn't an off putting oil taste and we added the garlic tartare sauce which was super creamy. The cod had a good amount of batter, super crispy and the fish was meaty with a good amount of flakiness. If you travel by car, you can park near the front on the street and just eat in your car, we saw a few people do this. Otherwise if the day is nice out (we got lucky), then walk over to St Patrick's cathedral or Christ church cathedral to eat. Both spots have plenty of benches. Highly recommend trying this place out. This place doesn't look like much but it will be a memorable meal from my trip to Dublin. It's located close to Christchurch Cathedral, not too far from Grafton Street & Temple Bar, and no more than 5 minutes from St. Patrick's Cathedral. It was a little pricier than I had expected (about €10 for one serving of fish and chips) but my family of 4 shared it and it did not disappoint - there was plenty of food to go around and it made for a cheap snack meal. The "chips" tasted freshly cut and fried, and the fish had a freshness to it despite the (slightly too-heavy) fried batter exterior. Get the salt and vinegar. If you're taking them to go, learn from our mistake and ask for some ketchup or mayo to accompany the fries, and maybe lemon for the fish. However, they do provide plastic forks. read more

Coming from the states my bar for Fish and Chips was low... mealy flavorless potatoes, frozen cubes of fish deep fried into a soggy mess of greasy flour. Mmmmmmmmmmm Mmmmmmmmmmm Mmmmmmmmmmm We sat in a park huddled around the beautifully wrapped golden brown fillet of cod, perfectly salted and sprinkled with malt vinegar. We held it like a precious gift wrapped for Christmas, the intense heat from the center of the potatoes warming every limb and nook of cold. It was a perfect moment of family quite, unified on one single experience too perfect for words. Months later we still talk about the happiness Leo gave to us that cold rainy day. read more

Not impressed at all. We've been trying fish n chips every where we go and haven't found a bad one until now. We heard good thIngs about this branch and thought we'd give it a try. Had Uber eats deliver it to us, and first off our order was a little wrong; missing garlic sauces and utensils but got an extra order of fries and some mystery white sauce. Sooooo... the batter on the fish is a bit thick, and a few of the chips/fries might be from the bottom of the vat and a little chewy. But, I dare you to find a tastier fish and chips order in the entire city of Dublin. Beshoff's? Pfshaw. :P A Burdock's order is hella value! Very much worth the 10 euro. That's what it cost last summer, anyway. Beverages are a great price too. Take-away is the only way at this Leo's. It's like a deli counter. Buy and leave. There's no spot inside to sit and enjoy your meal. Besides, do you really want the fishmongers staring at you snarfing down all that greasy goodness? Yeah, I didn't think so. So just grab your order and wander down into the park adjacent the church. Beware rats with wings, aka pigeons. When our cabbie dropped us off at our hotel, he did nothing but rave about this being the BEST fish and chips in all of Dublin. That's definitely a hard sell, but when we walked over and saw a line literally forming out the store and down the street behind us, we knew this was something special. This place has been here forever, and they have a long list of celebrities hanging on the wall to prove it. The place is literally an order our kind of a place, and that's always fine by me. We originally wanted to try the haddock and chips, but they were out of haddock at the moment. So, two orders of fish and chips to go was what we got. By the time we walked it across the street and had it in the hotel, there was a good amount of grease that bled through the paper wrappings. It wasn't as crispy as what I was hoping, but my hubby LOVED them! Don't get me wrong - it was good, but I thought it was just my second favorite spot. The fish was a beautiful white color on the inside, and smelt of malted vinegar and batter; no fishy smell here. The chips were good; not anything like the fries I'm used to at home. It's a cliché, but Leo Burdocks do serve the best fish and chips in Dublin (with Beschoff's not a million miles behind). I don't think that Burdock's is the be all and end all in terms of chippers per se (there's a lot of chippers in Dublin that do a decent bag of chips), but in the quality of the fish they serve, Burdock's is head and shoulders above the competition. And Burdock's also do crispy bits as a menu item, so you can buy a bag of chips that consists exclusively of the frazzled and extremely greasy crispy bits. Mmmmmm. I am going to commit a minor heresy against the sacred Leo Burdock's when I say that I am not that keen on their batter sausages. The batter sausage is my accompaniment of choice whenever I buy chips, and I have eaten them the length and breadth of Dublin (not the length and breadth of Ireland though; they can be quite tricky to find outside of the Pale, being noticeably absent in the deep south of Kerry). And the batter sausages of Burdock's DON'T SPLIT DOWN THE MIDDLE. To my mind, this is the single most important factor in deciding whether to make a purchase of said item, and batter sausages that aren't split down the middle just do not cut the mustard. This is not just a personal grievance, as I have discussed this issue with a number of other connoisseurs. So definitely give Leo Burdock's a visit, they make a damn fine bag of chips and fantastic fish, but give the oul' batter sausages a miss. read more
