Tried again and the same thing. Then I got a text saying they couldn't answer the phone and to let them know via text what I needed. I sent a detailed message and asked if they could help. No response. Not even a 'sorry, we can't help' or 'our first available appointment is in two weeks,' or, 'We're not accepting new patients.' Worst way to treat prospective customers, starting with not even answering the phone.

Don't force me into a service that I've not had before, have no information on and go "well, our doctors require it and it's another $45 out of pocket." I have decided to go somewhere else for eye exams that don't force un-covered procedures on you. Editing to add after the reply from the eye place: This procedure was NOT recommended. It was REQUIRED and it was conveyed you have no choice if you want it done or not. If you say no, no check up. If you say yes, then you have to pay the $45 since it's not covered by insurance. Again, this is not a recommendation of a procedure if it is required and that requirement is only told after you book an appointment. And then you have to pay more for this procedure that is forced on you.

So, I did. Except, contrary to appearances, that doesn't actually schedule an appointment. Somebody from the office called a few days later to say they didn't actually have an available appointment. If the "Schedule and Appointment" site is not actually for that purpose, then be explicit about that. I got an exam elsewhere and then gave Kessler Optical a second chance because they supposedly carry a line of frames in which I was interested. I walked into the business during their stated hours of operation, only to be told they don't accept walk-ins. If that's their policy, then they should state that on their website. I should add that the woman at the front desk was unapologetic about any of this and unnecessarily difficult. If a business repeatedly fails to communicate clearly and inconveniences a customer as a result, then the business should acknowledge that and, ideally, try to make amends. Kessler Optical did none of that. I had limited time and needed to place an order for new glasses quickly before traveling for the holidays. Kessler Optical was a waste of precious time.

At the start of my appointment, a technician persistently brought up Lasik surgery, despite my disinterest. When I said "No, thank you," the receptionist gave a speech about how Lasik is actually cheaper than buying contacts. Interesting take. She also told me that it's a "one-and-done" fix, and thus, much more economically efficient than contacts. I have never once in my life been harassed like this, nor recommended Lasik. Clearly Chittick has some contract with an off-facility surgery site. My recommendation: make that a little less obvious. Next, I attempted to buy contacts through them. Big mistake. Chittick charged me almost double what my old optometrist charged me. At first I thought it was an insurance issue, but then I pulled up the contacts price with NO insurance, and was baffled. Chittick inflates their contacts prices by at least 200%. You are better off ordering your contacts through 1800-contacts or a different site, as Chittick would like to squeeze many extra dollars out of your pocket. This practice is especially hurtful for graduate students. I am making only 2k/month over the summer, and with rent taking about 50% of my paycheck, I do not have time for Chittick's games. Recently I had an unusual eye situation; Dr. Meyer understood it better than a local ophthalmologist who was always in a hurry and never did listen to me as I tried to describe what happened. I have little experience with the frames issues mentioned here. Dr. Meyer understands and assists me with the somewhat unusual visual needs that I present her with. The lenses I prefer cannot be made locally; she has had no difficulty limiting her services to examination and refraction, for which her charges are very reasonable. I send my prescription to a specialist half way across the country who puts new custom lenses into my frames.

With high-index lenses and anti-reflective coating, my glasses were on the expensive side (close to $500), but I wear them every day and was in love with the style, so I went for it. Jones Optical's customer service has been top-notch. When my glasses came, the prescription was slightly off in one eye (another optometrist did my exam). The optometrist at Jones Optical did a quick re-exam for me and sent the lens off to be replaced at no extra cost. My view: Jones is neither the cheapest nor the most expensive option in town, but they have a good selection of frames and provide good service.

"oh, you're new! I'm doctor ..."
