This place is pretty meh. Without the nostalgia alum feel causing them to go to Lennie's, this place would not make it as a new restaurant. Not too happy with my experience at Lennie's. It took us 15 minutes for us to get our waters. I felt as if we had completely disappeared into the abyss at this restaurant. Maybe it was that we were college students that we were ignored, so she gave her attention to those who would be the better tippers. I can't blame her but it still sucked. It is close to campus for a reason. I think they share a kitchen. I got their spinach flat bread and it tasted like the food from the dorms: bland, overpriced, and kinda cold. Will not be dinning here again unless all I plan to get is an order of fries. Aw yes indeed, this brewery had 12 of their own crafted beers. I had the Kirkwood cream ale and my wife had the 10-speed hoppy wheat, both were winners. One thing that I noticed that Lennie's does is list the cost of a growler fill up on the menu per each and every beer. Other breweries would do well to follow this example. For an appetizer we had the smoked salmon and the cucumber salad with herbed cheese spread really set this off. Very good start to dinner. I had a difficult time making up my mind about what to order and I went with the Ahi Tuna Salad. I'm a sucker for seared ahi tuna and the mixture of greens, mango & avocado made this an excellent dish. My wife enjoyed Lennie's meatballs. Been to Lennie's three times now. Beer & food each time. Nothing overly fancy, certainly not pretentious. But great at what it provides. Fabulous service, as in fast, knowledgeable & very warm and social. Just what one would hope for but seldom finds. I felt like a long timer right away. Very good beer selection - tried 4 or 5. Found each to be distinct, fresh and good. Love the food and did my best to sample as much as possible. Charcuterie (killer mustard), basic dinner salad, flat bread (not a big fan of pickled artichoke hearts but these sang to me), wings, quesadillas and the best slaw that's ever passed these lips. One of my favorite lunch spots. I work on campus and can easily walk here. Their lunch combos are great! I'm a huge fan of the soup and salad. Their French onion soup is absolutely amazing! The cheese on top is always golden brown and delicious, the broth and bread is equally good. My favorite soup in town. The salad is so good, too. Love the house dressing with blue cheese. So good! Been coming to Lennies now for 25 years - yep I am brace enough to share that!! Teriyaki Chicken Salad is still as delicious, all their salads are just incredible. Pastas (chicken mushroom tortellini) are made in house and will cure the most home sick comfort food craving you could be having! Order their focaccia witch roasted garlic, get yourself some house fries with a side of their house made blue cheese (WOAH)! The JM Favorite Strom is a culinary delight , pizzas are all freshly made and the BBQ is one guy will crave!! The food seemed good but my meatball tasted off and my boyfriend agreed. After leaving about 30 minutes later we had to pull over in a parking lot and I vomited. Lennie's is a pretty solid food option when you've got a hunger for something hearty. As a constantly failing, wanna-be vegetarian, I really enjoyed that there were a couple of original, yummy sounding vegetarian options. And let's not forget that Lennie's tries to use local, organic ingredients! I chose the grilled cheese with spinach and chutney. It was great, and not just for those avoiding meat! I do have a thing for chutney on sandwiches though... Lennie's brews their own beer, and you can fill up your growler with some to take home! I was a bit skeptical when my boyfriend ordered a pitcher of the Java Porter, which A) sounds sketchy B) was one of the few beers listed without having won a ton of awards, but it was great! I've had pretty positive experiences with the food at Lennie's. The tuna in the Caribbean Ahi Tuna Salad was very good. This is actually a decent spot for brunch; the breakfast Stromboli is fantastic, and they also offer a breakfast pizza with a fried egg on top. I am not impressed with the beer here at all. The Java Porter has a strange burnt quality to it, the Blonde Ale is flavorless, and despite it's "medals", the Big Stone Stout is nothing special. In general, all of the beers that I have sampled here are lacking complexity and taste diluted. I also tried the stout from the engine pull nitro tap; I actually thought this made it worse. There isn't much to the decor inside. From the bar, you can see inside to the fermentation tanks, which is kind of cool. Overall, Lennie's is a decent spot to eat, but if you have any standards for the flavor of your beer, you are likely to be disappointed. read more

I prefer Lennies to Upland for a couple of reasons. 1 - Although Upland typically has a better variety of beers that are of overall higher quality, Lennie's Big Stone Stout and Quarryman's IPA on nitro can't be beat by anything at Upland. 2 - Although the menu is not as big, the pizza is much better than anything at Upland. 3 - The atmosphere is much more relaxed. That being said, it is a tad on the expensive side, but as I said, it's worth it. But if you don't really care for Stout, Pale Ale, or pizza, then you should go to Upland. Today I revisited Lennie's for the first time in five years, when I lived in Bloomington and went regularly. Sure, the interior of Lennie's probably hasn't changed much since it opened 20 years ago, but that adds to the charm. The house salad with house dressing - a mix of vinaigrette with blue cheese crumbles - is unlike any salad I've had elsewhere, and I've honestly though about it on the regular for a half decade. The sandwiches are great, particularly the turkey and red chile chicken. And I love, love, love the strombolis. Lennie's is a lunchtime treat and for my money, one of my favorite restaurants just about anywhere. read more

Meh, I've been to Lennies several times and am generally underwhelmed each time. All of the pastas are really bland and over spiced (avoid the Jamaican Jerk Chicken one at all costs). The salads are really good, but last time I went they were out of romaine lettuce and tried charge me $12.00 for a iceberg lettuce salad....I don't think so. My favorite restaurant in Bloomington, I go there every time I go back to visit. The house salad is amazing with red onions that they marinate themselves. I've never had a bad meal there. I really love their stroms, but they're quite large and often too much food. Pizza is always a good option but I usually opt for the bacon/ turkey melt sans bacon. Ordered the popular sandwich. It was cut into four pieces and only two of them had meat on it. The fries were $2 extra as well as being soggy and dark. The total for the sandwich and fries were $16! Not a good deal at all, especially with an addition of a large supreme pizza for $25 with its false description of "large." Add three beers and side of chilli, my order came out to be $70. Third, they recycle everything! And last on this short list, they wash their salad lettuce 6x .. again.. who does that? Persimmon, stouts, barrel aged, nitro .. you name it ..samples are encouraged. $4 flatbreads 4-6pm weekdays. Seasonal 4 day menus, specially crafted for holidays like "Fat Tuesday" "October Fest" Almost always crowed on Sundays, game days, IU events... bar side small, quaint but open seating. Lennie's is pretty good. I feel like it's the place to go when Yogi's just isn't classy enough for you anymore. At that point just pick up and head on down the street. I've had the cheese and meat plate which isn't that special and can be easily made at home. What I've been getting a lot however is the Lennie's Original. This roast beef sandwich with bacon and all sorts of other goodies is my new meal of choice. It's pretty good and filling. Plus it comes with a cucumber salad. Not too bad in my book. The biggest downside to here is the parking. I think I've been five times and each time I seem to be lucky enough to find the last space in the lot. So if you need to be there at a specific time, I'd recommend getting to the lot a few minutes early. read more

It's always great to have brewpub options, especially in such a small town as Bloomington. Given this, it was easy to forgive the relatively limited beer selection. I had the pale ale, which was offered on a nitro tap and an engine pull. I haven't been to any brewpubs that offer such options and it was a bit of an interesting discovery process to learn how differently the same beer can taste, depending on the how its served. For that reason alone, it was worth the visit. Otherwise, the food was decent pub fare, but certainly nothing remarkable. The menu is not worth describing in detail, although there are no burgers on the menu and the seasoned fries were a bit salty (watch out). Luckily the serving sizes were plentiful -- a necessity for a college town. read more

My husband and I had lunch at Lennies on (9-25-09 2pm) and wow! 5 stars! Our waitress Annie did an awesome job. I ordered mushroom and chicken torillini and it was just the way I remembered- salivating goodness! My husband ordered a calzone and loved it, (although on the menu it was called a stromboli). Food was great, sangria sweet and delicious, waitstaff excellent. After we drove off, I made a personal phone call back to Lennie's to talk to the manager and tell him what a great time we had. After telling the manager he seemed genuinely appreciative of me calling. Great Job Lennies and the next time I visit home, I will def. be stopping for Lennies! read more

Lennie's is a two-sided restaurant, with a smallish dining room area on the left and a brewpub/bar area on the right, but full food/drink service in both. The food is good here in most cases. I have always been a fan of their pizzas and strombolis, but they have healthier fare as well. Some of the entrees are off the beaten path, but there are plenty of traditional sandwiches and other standards as well. Despite being right across from a couple of dorms, the crowd here is generally much older than other places this proximal to campus. Lennie's also houses the Bloomington Brewing Company, and they offer a lot of fine beers. Try the Quarryman - an excellent pale ale. My wife and I like coming here when we're with friends. read more

Lennie's hands down has the best wings in town. They're huge, meaty, cooked to perfection and bathed in a great buffalo sauce. If I want wings, it's Lennie's or nuthin'. There are also great salads...Caribbean Ahi Tuna with Plaintains and a hefty Spinach Salad that is best with the Hot Bacon dressing...vinegary, bacony goodness. Get the extra bacon to amp up the pork factor. I only do the gluten free pizza option (I'm intolerant) so no beer, sandwiches or strombolis for me...though my memory of JM's favorite strom is that it's mind-blowing and a huge portion...like a pizza folded up and baked. The gluten free pizza is okay...the crust is more biscuity than pizza, so it never really scratches the itch. One of my favorite things about Lennie's is the Mini Indulgences desserts, a shot-glass size of goodness like Chocolate Mousse, Key Lime Pie or various cheesecakes. It's the perfect size for a little something sweet without totally blowing your diet (do that with the chicken wings!). This is a great little spot. Several BBC and other microbrews on draft (and root beer for the little ones). Our waitress made a great tip based on my preferences. She was well versed in all their offerings. As other reviewers have noted, a wide variety from easy drinking to hoppy IPA's, whatever your preference is, you'll find a couple that will meet your liking. Be sure to check the chalkboard for the specials. They do a really good clam chowder, also have some rotating and seasonal items that are worth going off the menu and onto the special of the day. So the regular menu is a nice mix of salads (which are very good sized) sandwiches (which can also be made a wraps), pizzas and stroms. Good variety in each category with the requisite "build your own" option in pizza and stroms alike. The Monterrey Strom is a nice twist with a jalepeno kick- and with BBQ sauce is a unique twist. My colleague said it was really a nice combination of flavors. I had a tilapia sandwich made into a wrap. Really good blend of flavors here too, with a little spicy kick and the wrap was not too heavy, but just right. We skipped desert this time, but if you've saved up your calories or your sweet tooth needs to be satisfied, Lennies has you covered. The Original Sin is the dessert you've been looking for. Plan to share it, but it is chocolate upon chocolate upon chocolate. Order the coffee with it, locally roasted and you'll have the perfect ending. I've hit Lennies several times, and it is another go-to for me to take out of town guests for a lunch, or to meet up with contacts on campus. The parking lot is a bit small, but I have always found a place to park. We were in Bloomington last night on business and, based on Yelp reviews, decided on Lennie's for dinner. OMG, it was FABULOUS!! Amelia was our server and she was very good. I think they were a little short handed because she seemed to have the whole bar side herself, except for the bartender, but she was pleasant and attentive. We wanted a lighter beer and she brought us a "taste" of what she thought might work for us -- I don't remember what it was, a light ale, but it was a very good choice and we enjoyed it very much. They are having Octoberfest and have Bavarian additions to their menu now. My husband wanted Jagerschnitzel, but after asking about dairy, decided on another dish. He ordered the brat with German potato salad and red cabbage. It was a HUGE brat on a seeded roll, lots of sauerkraut and brown mustard. He enjoyed it very much. I ordered the Chicken and Mushroom Tortellini and it was out of this world!! It would have paired better with white wine, but I already had the beer -- considered a pizza, but couldn't get my mind off the delicious description of the tortellini. It is a huge portion, served in an au gratin dish, piping hot. My last bite was almost still as hot as the first. The tortellini is tossed in a white sauce with some chopped spinach then topped with mushrooms, chicken, and cheese, and baked. It is plenty large to share, especially if you order a salad. The dining room side was very crowded when we arrived about 6:30 and we were told it would be about a 15 minute wait. The hostess offered to check in the bar and a tall top was empty, plus I remembered that Indiana does not allow small children into the bar side, so it was a very easy decision. It's a bit loud in the whole place, but everyone seemed like they were having a good time and all staff members that I saw were very pleasant. This would be a 4-star in a big city, but in Bloomington, it gets 5-stars. I also used to work at this place when I was in college, and I'm STILL giving it 5 stars which means the kitchen is clean, they don't pee in the salad dressing, etc., at least not when I was there. Anyways, I would second the vote on the marinated red onions and also their salads overall. I've had practically every one and they are always fantastic. Very fresh, large, and you get a nice doughy slice of bread with them. Their sandwiches are quite good as well but can be a bit messy, i.e. they are so loaded they tend to fall apart. Lennie's has expanded their menu in to pastas and more "gourmet" fare and that's cool, but I just stick to the sandwiches, stroms, and pizzas and never go wrong. Also a couple people have knocked the service: the cool thing about Lennie's is the wait staff isn't in cheesy uniforms and they actually seem to have a personality. Had a crock of yummy French onion soup. It had bread and onions all the way through the tall bowl. The cheese on top was caramelized perfectly. The broth was dark and flavor filled . Will have to get again! The restaurant was clean and bright. Lots of art work that was fun to look at. We also had the shrimp and crab dip from the appetizer menu. It was served with lots of crispy flat bread. The dip was delicious. Not fishy at all. Very fresh. Yum Only two things out of a large menu. Try anything. I've been there five times in the short time I've lived in Bloomington, simply because I can't imagine a better place to have an evening beer and some really delicious, satisfying food. They manage to make salads as tasty and comforting as your mom's home cooking, and though I'm a cheeseburger addict I've always been more than happy with their meatless sandwiches. They use fresh ingredients and know how to handle spices and sauces. The space itself is really cool, especially the bar--you get a nice and colorful view of the brewery. The staff is really friendly, helpful and generous--the first time I went there, the waiter recommended a place to go dancing; the second time, the waitress was the happiest person on the planet (Kelly, I think) ; the third time, I got a free root beer sample, etc. The ambiance is casual but not unorganized, and the beer is delicious. read more

Popped into Lennie's for the first time since they moved to the new location on Kirkwood. On a cold night, it was great to walk in and see (and feel) the huge, wood-burning oven and decided that pizza would be a great call. The pizza was delicious!!! My friend also ordered some fried pickles and I'm glad I stole a couple because they were excellent! A really light batter and fried perfectly. Knocked down a Persimmon Ale and a Kirkwood Cream Ale as well and great conversation with friends made for a great evening! I'll be back soon!!! read more
