Cat helped us get fat! She was wonderful keeping the table clean, and drinks topped off. I ordered the catfish poboy. The fish was bigger than the flaky bun with lettuce and tomato, with as much tartar or red sauce as I could keep inside it. My wife had the spinach dip instead of an entrée. It was wonderful! Tacklebox is the restaurant attached to the lobby of the Renaissance Pere Marquette, and as such it is also the restaurant where Bonvoy status members can get a breakfast credit depending on their level. I have status so I used Tacklebox for my spot for breakfast each day during a recent stay. Nothing special. I did the American Heartland breakfast one day and plain ol' eggs and cheese on other days, so that I could focus on bad eating elsewhere (NOLA makes that pretty easy!). Service was up and down, but food always came out quickly. Portions are large so no issues there, and prices seemed fair. Let's cut to the chase...the food is Okay. Now for the details. I work in the area so it was a short walk to meet my brother here for a quick lunch. We opted to sit at the bar. Our bartender was cool. It's Mardi Gras season so there's a couple of seasonal drinks. I tried the pineapple parade drink. It was good, weak...but good still. I expected that in a touristy area. Everything is always as far as drinks are concerned. We got 2 orders of Chargrilled oysters which is usually by the dozen but they sell theirs with 8. I was shocked to see that came up to $28/an order. while oysters can be expensive, this pricing is another tourist trap. They tasted decent tho. I got the salmon with Brussels sprouts for my entree and my brother got the fried seafood platter. The Brussels sprouts were honestly the star on my plate. The salmon was pretty good paired with it. My brother's seafood platter was piled and had a lot of food. Definitely enough to share. Personal preference though, I feel it could've been seasoned a little better. While I know this isn't a rave review, I have to say, the food was okay. The prices just don't match the taste. Again...it was okay. lol read more

Located in the Renaissance Hotel, just a block away from Bourbon, sits Legacy Kitchen Tacklebox. Very nice upscale bar and restaurant featuring a tap bar as well as a full bar service area. I wanted a snack to help me power through the day till dinner. I can't help but to have have some comforts: red beans and rice, crawfish etoufee, and gumbo. I tell you, what a treat. Good flavors. This place seems to be hit and miss on food and service. Had exceptional service Sat morning with amazing beignet bites and scrumptious breakfast sandwich. The female server was attentive and helpful. A great experience. So we went back Sun morning and order beignets and gravy - yuck... chewy beignets clearly just heated up. I only had dessert and drinks, so that's what I'm reviewing. The bananas foster bread pudding w vanilla bean ice cream is a must have. Their bar setup is visibly small, but the selection is notable. They actually have some Haitian rum on deck, which you're not likely to find at many venues. Also they had some interesting looking mezcal selections that I will be back to sample. Service was friendly and excellent and the ambiance was was whole vibe with the musical selections that were varied and at perfect decibel to enjoy but not interrupt conversations. Definitely worth a visit if you're visiting the 504. It's in the Renaissance hotel on Common. I wish my memory served me to remember names readily, but one of the bartenders, a local, that works the day shift til 3 was a whole vibe. This was recommended by an Uber driver, saying she had a great time celebrating her birthday that she and her fam came back a second time the same week. That sold Hubbers, so he took it upon himself to decide this is where next dinner is. It was only a few minutes' walk from our hotel, so it was pretty convenient. I wasn't really hungry since I had a snack a couple of hours prior, but I thought the Grand Tower was a good idea to share with my party of 4. Paired that with a Bloody Mary. It is plenty for a starter. 6 fresh shucked oysters, 6 charbroiled oysters, 6 shrimp cocktail, smoked salmon dip and crawfish remoulade. It's practically a meal for two! The oysters were fantastic, but I think my favorite here are the dip and remoulade. Loved the smoked aroma from the salmon and the crawfish tails on the remoulade. Don't get me wrong: the oysters were great as well as the shrimp (bigger than normal) but the salmon dip did it for me! My party ordered their own dishes, but I was set with sharing the tower. And to finish it off: an order of beignets to cleanse the palate. Someone in my party said they liked it better than Cafe du Monde's version! FOOD: 4. SERVICE: 4. Then the oddest part of the meal for me - I ordered a latte which was listed as a menu option. This place is connected to the hotel next door, so they ordered the latte from the hotel and brought it over in a paper cup about halfway into the meal. The latte was also not good. If you're hungry and you're staying at a hotel near by, it'll do. I ordered a shrimp poboy and asked for them to sub fries with a cup of gumbo. It was alright, nothing to write home about. The service was good, it took a while for the food to come, but when it did it was clear that it was made fresh right then so the longish wait wasn't too bad. A few strangers I met while on my trip mentioned Tacklebox to me, and I decided to slide on in and give them a go. Listen here, best decision to end my night. Eve provided me and my new friends with 5-star service. She's great at her job, very kind and attentive. She made great suggestions with the menu. She customized our drinks based on what we typically would drink. Girlfriend knows her way around the bar, trust!!! She's so amazing! I will be back for sure she gave me excellent NOLA customer service. The restaurant was empty but still a steady crowd flowing in. I sat at the bar and was able to see all the action outside. It was nice to witness a NOLA wedding parade right outside the window. Now, let's talk about the food because I know that's what you came here for... I ordered the southern Georgia chicken sandwich with fries.... Babay, it did what it was supposed to do. So juicy and full of flavor that were well balanced out. The sauce on the chicken had the perfect amount of heat and sweetness. The bread was buttery and soft. Honestly, there was nothing special about the slaw on top, but it worked altogether. I would highly recommend this dish, but next time I visit, I hope I'm bold enough to try the oysters. They looked so mouthwatering. The liquor in my system almost gave me liquid courage. lol - they offer a trio sampler, but one of the three things was not available. I tried to crab & corn bisque. Usually when I order soup in a restaurant, it's served lukewarm. I'm torn with this review. On the one hand pretty much everything that we ate was absolutely amazing. Unfortunately, on the other hand, the service was probably the worst experience I've ever had in my life. Our server's name was Cat. It started when we were ordering and one of the people at our table wasn't quite ready, but the person who wasn't sure of what they wanted to eat yet assured her that she would be able to order right after the others ordered. Apparently that was not acceptable to our server and so she said everybody has to be ready at the same time, so she would look after four other tables and then would come back. That was odd and a little unnerving, but we moved on. While we all ordered at the same time, our main dishes came very staggered to the point that several of us were completely done our food by the time a couple of the other mains arrived. This was not the end of the world, but we found it to be odd. A big part of what made us so uncomfortable is that we got the impression that she was punishing us the entire time she was serving us. When we would ask for something different (because of a food allergy, for example) it took an incredibly long time to get what we asked for. Things really got bad at the end when we told her we wanted to split the bill, as we were obviously a mixed crowd, and she made us feel terrible and said that we're supposed to tell her beforehand. We wanted to tell her before she printed the bill, but she came with the bill before we had a chance. Then because we inconvenienced her she left again and came back a long time later again like she was punishing us. Then when we were trying to pay the bill, she got quite upset and went and got the manager because she wasn't listening to what we said and misunderstood because she didn't hear the rest of the sentence of the person who had the right payment method. Because of how she made us feel, it's hard to put into words just how awful the service was during our dinner. Easily the worst I've ever had in the world and I've been literally all over the world. A 20% tip is automatically added into our bill because we were five people altogether, which was tough to swallow because we didn't want to reward her for treating us so badly. The mistreatment was unjustified because are a group of genuinely nice people; not once were we short with her. Wealways thanked her kindly and, in the end, let all of this mistreatment slide. Perhaps we shouldn't have let it slide, but we really didn't want to argue with her and let it spoil the rest of our evening. read more

Decided to stop in and try last week while on a hut for some food that is in walking distance to my house. I met the sweetest hostess, Renita. She gave me a few recommendations on the menu. I didn't spend a lot of time here - came in to grab a drink before a business dinner. While it was not heavily populated (not always a good sign but it was monday night), i can say a couple of things: 1) outstanding cocktail ingredient list - and bartenders that understand how to craft them. They made my Naked and Famous like pro's - even if not on the menu. That's a great sign. 2) grabbed some oysters as an app - holy smokes! well beyond my expectations - both charbroiled and raw. I've only been once, so maybe this is not a fair review. But after the one trip, I've no interest in going back. And I do work right across the street. I had a craving for a good burger, so I ordered their "Southern Burger" without the pimento. First, I start at the walk-in. I was not immediately greeted by anyone, though it was lunch time. It didn't take long for someone to notice me, in passing, and I did get a table pretty quickly, but it was just odd that the place seemed "unmanned". Okay, so back to the burger: This was not a cheap burger, but it was about as average a burger as you can find. For a place with white linen tablecloths, I thought I'd maybe get a nice, gourmet-ish burger. Nope, just a gourmet-ish price. But it was okay, and the service was fine. When the server brought me my check, it was detailed, and appeared to be wrong. When I asked about it, he realized he gave me someone else's check, and brought me another that was simply a total amount, and more than the previous one, thought I guessed it would be cheaper. He gave some explanation (but not a detailed check), and I just paid it and chalked this up to the cost of trying a new place to eat. I've definitely had worse. But as I said, I have no desire to go back. My thinking is if they're going to use cheap quality beef for their burger, then I shouldn't expect any of the other ingredients to be fresh or good either. read more
