We went to this restaurant last night and were extremely happy we did! We didn't have a reservation, but they were still able to seat us immediately. It was a small and cozy place with lots of character. We had the prix fix meal for 32 euros where we got to choose an appetizer, entree, and dessert. My husband got the steak and I got the beef bourginon. The sides were mashed potatoes, rice, and a grits type thing. The mashed potatoes were super good. We both started with the creek of asparagus soup. For dessert, I had the chocolate mousse and he had a coffee with a mini Bremen brûlée and a mini caramel flan. This was my favorite restaurant in Paris. They serve incredibly delicious and seemingly-authentic Basque food, and when I went with my family of 8, I got to try everyone's dish and was impressed with every single one of them. I ordered veal stew, which I happened to like the best of all the dishes I tried. It was made with peppers, onions, and a tomato-based sauce. It paired well with the polenta. I also particularly enjoyed the Beef Bourguinon and Rabbit Stew. But honestly, you could probably order anything off of their menu and be satisfied. For dessert, I ordered the Creme Brulee and was not disappointed. My uncle tried their Pear Crumble, which was also quite tasty. It's a little out of the way to find, but it's actually not too far from the Dupleix metro station in the 15th district. It also seems to be a place where people enjoy watching sports, so if there's a major sporting event going on, don't be surprised if there's a lot of people and noise. To me, this place was a gem in a big city, and I thoroughly enjoyed my meal there. Whenever I'm back in Paris, I'll definitely be coming here for another meal. read more

Absolutely loved this place! Stayed in a place just down the block and randomly tried them on a Wednesday night. Went around 845 and got seating (for two) no problem. They're my favorite kind of restaurant, really good food in a relaxed environment, think upscale bar. We got the beef bourguignon, which had the most delicious sauce. It comes with mashed potatoes, polenta, and rice pilaf, great to have a little variety. Also got the charcuterie board which was good (hard to go wrong though), really liked that it came with pickles. Also got the special, filet mignon with mushrooms. Super good! Meat is a little more on the well-done side (from what I'm used to at least) so keep that in mind. Everyone was also super nice and very understanding of us fumbling with our simple French sentences. Our Best meal in Paris hands down. Came here after visiting the Effel Tower. Staff were very friendly and accommodating with our nine month old daughter. They were also nice and patient with our lack of French language skills. The restaurant is small and cozy and is popular with locals who live nearby. We had the veal chili (stew) which was really good. It came with mashed potatoes, rice, and polenta. We had cream brûlée for desert. Every single thing we had here was excellent, except for - surprisingly - the (recommended) entrecôte, which was genuinely not good. Possibly my fault for agreeing to have it medium. My husband and I walked 1.5 miles from our hotel in 30 degree weather just to try the beef Bourguignon. It was so worth it! It's a hefty portion though. I did my homework before coming to Paris, because I didn't want to waste a single meal. That goal turned out to be difficult because we found ourselves sightseeing in a different part of the city than where our restaurants were. But we made it a point to come to La Volant Basque, and it was well worth it. The server recommended the confit canard ("It's the special. It is wonderful here. The chef does it very good."--okay, sold!) and it was the single best thing I've eaten in Paris. Maybe in the entire country, even. Let me tell you. The duck. It was a single leg browned to crispy perfection. The skin was rendered deliciously and the meat was juicy. I fed my dining companion a bite and one bite led to two, three, and pretty soon he regretted not ordering it as well. We still dream about that duck. Other details: our meals came with side dishes of mashed potatoes, rice, and grits (?) so we were more than full. The menu is either 24€ for main plus dessert or 26€ for main plus appetizer. There were helpful servers and friendly owner (he was fixing the lightbulb in the bathroom when I went downstairs to use it, and he insisted on giving me his phone to use the flashlight function ("Just don't forget to give it back, haha!"). The food here is tastes okay. Not the best food you can get in Paris, but the flavors are fine. There are places just as good all over Paris, though. However, there was an issue with my experience here: I received food poisoning. If I had not received food poisoning from this place, my review would've been 3-stars instead of 1-star. But this was not the case. I had the fried goat cheese salad, braised beef, and creme brûlée. The brûlée was decent, and the braised beef was tender. However, I started with the salad and it is what I suspect gave me food poisoning. The fried goat cheese tasted "off", like there was some kind of funk to it. This was not a cheese-type of funk, but rather it tasted slightly like how body odor smells. Gross, I know. However, I simply wrote it off to it being a weird kind of goat cheese. My experience later that night made me realize that this was not typical of cheese. This was our first night in Paris, and towards the beginning of our overall trip to Europe. Fortunately this bout of food poisoning was short, but it had the potential to ruin an entire costly trip. I know most of the reviews on here are positive, but if it happens once, then it can happen again. My suggestion: If Paris is an easy trip for you (e.g. you live in the U.K. or other local countries), feel free to take the risk. However, if it's not, then it's not worth the risk of ruining your trip. The odds may be slim, but with a costly trip, do you really want to take those odds? read more

One of my favorite meals in Paris was from a local place called La Volant Basque. Fricassee de regnons et ris de veau champignons (24,00 €): fricassee of kidneys and calf sweetbreads. I picked to this restaurant because of the sweetbread and I was not disappointed. The sweetbread was cooked and seasoned perfectly. I was expecting the kidney to be more tender, but I did enjoy eating the crunchy pieces. Pave de saumon grille coulis de tomate au basilic (19,00 €): Warren was pretty impressed with the salmon. The salmon was juicy on the inside and crispy on the outside. The tomato basil sauce was delicious. He finished his plate and told the waitress that he could eat 2 more plates. She actually believed him LOL The meal came with a bread basket and sides of rice pilaf, polenta and mashed potatoes. The bread and rice were not bad, but the cheesy polenta and creamy mashed potatoes were delicious! Hats off to the chef! We wanted to come back for its famous beef bourguignon, but we didn't get the chance to visit this hidden gem for the second time. The service was friendly, helpful and efficient. My waitress was so adorable and sweet. I saw the soccer uniform on the wall and I asked if the athlete was famous. A true Basque restaurant. Most everything is served in a cast iron pot. Try the beef... it is tender and tasty. And the pork dishes will meet your expectations. I decided to go with the entree and plat (appetizer and main) which was €26. Ordered the oxtail terrine and then the beef bourguignon. I really enjoyed the cornichon and pickled peppers that complimented the dish. The beef bourguignon, hands down, was delicious. The portion was a decent size. After having a few of the Stoverij in Belgium, I wanted to taste the difference between beef stew made with beer and wine. The meat just melted in your mouth. I mean you can just cut it with your fork. The bacon they put on top wasn't too salty as well. My wife ordered the plat and dessert (main and dessert) for €24. She ordered the fish du jour. It consisted of the piquillo which was red peppers stuffed with white fish. The fish had a mousse consistency. I've never had anything like it. It was also covered in a red pepper sauce. The sides were the usual three at Le Volant: mashed potatoes, rice, and polenta. My personal favorite was the mashed potatoes. So smooth and flavourful. Very well seasoned. Dessert was a warm clafoutis aux pommes. Loved the baked custard, but apple doesn't quite compare to cherries which is what a classic clafoutis should be. read more

I've been to Paris 3 times, and this little restaurant has the best food I've tasted in Paris. It's the epitome of French comfort food. I honestly can't remember the name of the entree I had, but it was some sort of rabbit stew. The meat was tender and rich. My brother ordered the Beef Bourguignon. They served our entrees with small bowls of mashed potatoes, rice, and some sort of delicious grits. It was heavenly. I still dream of it since I've returned weeks ago. Flawless yelp find. Just got back from dinner and I'm so full, but of course not too full to spill the beans. We ordered the beef bourguignon, which seems to be the popular choice here, and we're so glad we did. Accompanied by complimentary rice pilaf, mashed potatoes and polenta, the dinner is abundant to say the very least. Served in a little brass pot, the beef is tender and juicy in a succulent and thick mushroom gravy. Melt-in-your-mouth morsels of meat sit below long strips of bacon, surrounded by mushrooms which have soaked up the juices. The portion for two people was even too big, so I'm not sure how we would have handled the optional appetizer or dessert-inclusive menus. All sides were delish but we were huge fans of the mashed potatoes. Not that we consider ourselves true mashed potato connoisseurs but we definitely know a good plate of creamy mashies when we taste 'em. We paired our dinner with a bottled of chilled Chinon -- a French red wine recommended by our lovely waitress. I appreciated the reasonable recommendation as this was certainly not the most expensive bottle on the menu, but suited our taste well. The staff really went out of their way to make us feel comfortable, chatting with us in English and giving fair suggestions of both the food and wine on the menu. Couldn't resist the creme brulee for dessert and found that it was set perfectly beneath a sheet of crispy torched sugar. Great ending to a delicious meal. The chorizo blew my mind because it had the common up front taste, but as it settled you had hints of apices kick in and it finished with parsley like taste. This little restaurant, while off the beaten path, is still very close to the Eiffel Tower and one of the absolute best values we found while we were in Paris. It is the perfect place to stuff yourself and then walk slowly to the Tower to watch it light up at night while succumbing blissfully to the inevitable food-induced coma. For starters we sampled the rabbit terrine and cod-stuffed piquillo peppers. We made quick work of these two dishes, sopping up every last drop of sauce with the ubiquitous baguette that came alongside. When the main dishes arrived, we were completely unprepared for the generous portion sizes. My husband's boeuf bourguignon could've fed 3 people, not including the three sides of rice, polenta, and mashed potato that accompanied it. My veal sweetbreads were also generous, easily the largest portion of sweetbreads I've ever seen. The smell of the buttery, mushroomy sauce that covered the sweetbreads was intoxicating, and the taste was out of this world. It might be the very best thing I've eaten in a while and will probably remain so for a long, long time. I was so full, I left a lot on my plate and I'm convinced they thought I didn't like it, when in fact they were the best sweetbreads of my life! When the creme brulée dessert came out, I was achingly full, but still managed a few bites. The terrine, beouf bourguignon (w/ sides) and dessert came as a set menu for an affordable 32€. Even with the peppers, sweetbreads, a 25mL carafe of wine, the total bill was less than 80€. While we were paying at the bar the owner chatted us up a bit and we were offered a complimentary digestif. I don't usually drink but I politely accepted her gracious recommendation of an apple liqueur called Manzana Verde. So many of my friends have tried in vain to find an alcoholic beverage I could enjoy, and Le Volant has finally succeeded in that mission. We stood outside the restaurant sipping our drinks and enjoying the setting sun before ambling slowly towards the Eiffel Tower, bellies full and eyes happily glazed over. read more

I wish I had discovered this spot myself, however was beaten to the punch by many other yelpers. Part of me is concerned that this is a local spot on the verge of getting overwhelmed by tourists. Most of the people there during my meal were tourists, except for a group of French folks in the corner who seemed miffed by all of the non-French speakers. This is the dilemma I have with yelp. I would likely not have found this spot without it. At the same time, I worry that it exposes beautiful places that risks losing their charm if overrun. On the other hand, I'm sure the restaurant doesn't mind extra business. It's a double-edged sword, and figured I'd have to highlight it for my own selfish high horse reasons. I guess another high horse message is just don't be a touristy a-hole when you come here. Try speaking French (at least a phrase or two) and be kind. There were a couple of fellow Americans at the table next to me that were major jerks; condescending when the waitress didn't speak perfect English (they speak English here and accommodate nicely). I was visiting Paris with my girlfriend this past summer, and we were in the mood for some authentic beef bourguignon. After searching on yelp, we found this place where a lot of locals go to eat...and also Zinedine Zidane. No biggie... So the specialty at Le Volant Basque is the beef bourguignon, and it did not disappoint. The beef was very tender, moist, and gave off a slight red wine taste which was great. Also, the bacon in the dish gave a nice savory component to the dish. Overall, the beef bourguignon here was earthy, robust, and basically everything beef bourguignon should be. In addition to the beef bourguignon, their sides are quite good. The polenta and mashed potatoes are some of the best I have ever had, and taste even better when you poor some of the beef bourguignon broth over it. Finally, the crème brûlée here was OUTSTANDING. The custard was smooth, creamy, and had just the right amount of sweetness. The caramelized sugar on top was not too burnt, and added a crunchy texture to balance the smooth texture of the custard. I would definitely recommend going here if you are ever in Paris. It's kind of a small restaurant, so be mindful of what time you are eating, and how big of a party you are bringing. Also, the staff is friendly and they speak enough English to understand your order. P.S. Remember not to mention Zidane headbutting an Italian futbol player in the 2006 World Cup. So we walked out of our way for this neighborhood restaurant near the Eiffel Tower and the food was amazing. It's just too bad our waitress was so rude to the point of ruining our dinner. Even the service couldn't distract from dinner. We ordered the garlic shrimp as a starter and the Beef Bourguignon entrée. And it was worth it even with: -the 20 minute wait, -being stuck in a corner (literally they pulled a table out a corner, sat is down and then closed us in with the table), -sitting next to a stinky wine cooler that they opened every 5-minutes and I had to hold my breath to enjoy my meal, -putting up with the young (by young I mean immature, rude and slow to the point of ignoring us Russian waitress) -wine was good, but the difficult to decipher as it was in French. -the noise was unbearably loud to the point I hardly could carry on a conversation with my wife, -our waitress left us to fend for ourselves for 2-hours. Luckily the manager was very nice and made up for her lack of attention. I don't like to give bad Yelp reviews so I won't. We were staying at a b&b about 10 mins away and decided to try this place because of the yelp reviews. I am glad yelp steered us in the right direction. It is a very small place located on a side street. Definitely not a big joint but easy enough for us to grab a table for 3 on a Tues evening. My son got the beef bourguignon which was absolutely tender with craving beef sauce and mushroom with dripping bacon. It was presented in a small pot which is absolutely fitting. It was only 20 euro. I got the ginger sea bass which was very fresh and clean while my wife got the salmon dill for appty and piquillo fish wrapped in pepper which she never had before and enjoyed immensely. The entrees came with some sides (mash potato, dish, polenta). For dessert, my wife got the creme bulee and I got the trio dessert (mini rice pudding, mini creme bulee, mini tiramisu). Gave this place one star for the fried goat cheese salad. Service was terrible and frustrating. The beef bourguignon was a missed opportunity. Certainly not worth the costs. There are so many places in Paris that are much better and much cheaper. The food was served on heavily chipped plates and we were sat next to the service door that almost hit us every time they existed the kitchen. The service was the worst part of all. Quite rude and clearly only concerned with treating certain customers well... I believe it was the owner that actually gave us the poor service. This was definitely one of the most delicious meals I had in Paris for a very reasonable price! It was just a couple blocks from our hotel and not too far from the Eiffel Tower. Unpretentious local authentic French restaurant for visitors and locals alike. Very homey, casual place, but food and portion was AMAZING. We were able to get by no problems speaking English with the staff. Do make a reservation if you're getting there after 8pm or if you have a larger party. We shared 2 appetizers: salmon and foie gras with bread.. I could've just eaten this all night and be completely satisfied!
