Grand plans!!! We had grand plans!!!! You know what they said about the best laid plans of mice…read moreand men... they often go awry. This was our last night in Paris. We were going to hit the big time. We were going to head back to the hotel, change into some fancier duds, and go out with a bang! We were going somewhere fancy and probably spend too much money in the process. We got delayed at Disneyland Paris and our half day turned into a bit more than that. We got rained on. One of us got too excited shopping on Boulevard Haussman! (That wasn't me.) We forgot to pick up our take home chocolates @ Patrick Roger. (That was me.) We decided to take home a bunch of fresh gallettes from Poilane Bakery (That wasn't me.) And so on and so forth. If you're playing the home game... that's a lot of back and forth in Paris. We walked into PG's loaded with shopping bags and starving. I had fired up the old Yelp when we were at Poilane Bakery and the place that interested us most was PG's and one other nearby joint. We aimed ourselves in this direction and took off walking. Ultimately, we let our noses choose and our noses chose PG's Bar a Manger. Let me say that I love hamburgers, but hamburgers don't always love me. Sometimes they mess my stomach up in a bad way. I was going to be in the air for over 10 hours the following day, so I was hesitant to risk it. I wanted a burger so badly. BUT I also hate to be "that guy" who tries to warp the menu to his tastes, especially in France. I asked the server if I could get the Texas Ranger Burger with chicken instead. He offered to ask the chef. THE CHEF SAID YES! I was very pleased. My wife made her choice and got a Tartine. We both loved our meals. The food was incredibly fresh and the chef makes his own condiments, which were delicious. The food was wonderfully prepared and it was our biggest surprise of the entire trip in regards to meals. The chicken was tender and juicy. The toppings were SPOT ON. I can only imagine how awesome it would've been to have beef instead. I just couldn't risk it with the long flight. The chef actually came out (it's a tiny place, there were only the 2 of them working) and checked on us. He noticed my shame of pulling the caramelized onions off of my burger. He asked why I didn't ask for it without and I had to tell him the sad tale of how I love the TASTE that onions bring to food, but hate to EAT onions because of their mouth-feel. My wife gives me the stink eye for this sometimes, but she usually steals my onions in the end, so it works out. He just laughed. After our meal he came back out and chatted with us a bit. Telling us how he was from NY, but has lived in Paris for a few decades now. We laughed about old people in Florida (he had an aunt with a timeshare) and he asked us for the one thing we'd adopt into our lives back home. He was a real pleasure to chat with and make some delicious food! We left full and happy. Our blown plans wound up making for a deluxe final dinner in Paris. Highly recommend stopping in. They have a great craft beer selection and these great artisan lemonades.

Finally! After over a year of renovations this former faucet factory (which was more recently a…read morecouscous restaurant) has opened to the public with its gorgeous new decor. This past weekend the doors opened and the neighborhood locals poured in to test out what is bound to become a hotspot in this developing side of the canal. The restaurant/café is pretty gigantic and extremely tastefully done. There's a lovely atrium in the central part of the restaurant outfitted with retro tiled floors, a wall garden and a glass ceiling that looks onto the painted window frames of the hotels rooms above. There's also a library-like salon, and a big dining area with faucet wall art and a smattering of tables outside. While I've yet to test out the American-inspired bistrot fare of mostly hot open sandwiches, salads and burgers I did have a very lovely crisp rosé in the central cafe while chatting with some neighbors who, like me, were there to support this local biz on its first few days of existence. Friendly owners, great space, cool decor and a boutique hotel all wrapped into one. What's not to love?

Oh boy! Never in my life have I had to literally disrobe and air out my clothing after eating in a…read morerestaurant, but that's what happened after my greasy-steamed meal at Le Mal Barré. Maybe things would have been a bit less stinky if we had sat downstairs, but alas, we chose a small table on the mezzanine above to test out the famed burgers here. The waitress was lovely and the menu tantilizing with its many inventive tweaks on the classic burger, so all got off to a good start. After hestitating for a while I chose Le Nippon chicken burger, a terriyaki marinated chicken breast covered with melted mozzarella and sauteed shitake mushrooms. It was served in a lovely brioche bun and came with a copious side of sauteed zucchini, a nice "healthy" alernative to the fries, but quite greasy nonetheless. The meal was yummy and super inexpensive (10E if I remember correctly), but towards the end of the meal my eyes started to sting from the steamy smoke from the grill. Once I got home and smelled myself, my worst fears were confirmed -- all of that grill grease had seeped into my clothes. Until Le Mal Barre gets a better airation system, I'm going to pass on this place even though the burger were quite good.

One of the places I discovered was Supernature. It's located in the 2nd Arrondissement, which is the garment district -- if you're interested in checking out this area. I loved the ambiance here. It's fresh and clean and filled with houseplants. A guy sat at the two-top next to me, and it turns out he's an expat from Chicago. He said that he ate at Supernature almost daily. If that alone isn't an endorsement then I don't know what is. Everything on their menus is organic and fresh. Their fais maison boeuf France is farm-raised beef in France. Not having had mollusks in a while, I ordered the moules farcies à l'arménienne, Armenian stuffed mussels, featuring tomatoes, saffron, and parsley. A salad of fresh green peas, cabbage, kale, and radishes came with the meal. All of it was delicious, and the mussels are considered a superfood. Yea!
