Got the French onion soup which was actually good. The escargots were a bit hard to eat and it was a struggle to get it out but the butter was pretty nice. A terrible photo but a fun time. Came here a few times while visiting a friend as it was in their neighborhood. While I didn't have any substantial meals here the service and what I had were decent and I never felt rushed. Copious amounts of cocktails, French breakfast (the only photo I have and note they were out of croissants- how this was possible I have no clue so I got double the baguette) baguette, croissant, espresso and orange juice and lots of people watching. As mentioned in my review of the Moulin Rouge. This place was a God send after forgetting to eat prior to the show. It was the best rated place within close proximity of the show. It isn't quite situated in the nicest vicinity but if you aren't scared of a little danger at night then I definitely recommend this place. The food was amazing considering that everything else I ate was subpar. I did not have a desire to try escargot but it was recommended by the patrons sitting next to us so we went for it. It was amazing right along with the entree Trio du Terroir. The atmosphere was nice and intimate. It has quaint seating area outside so adjusting to minimal elbow room is needed. We had the best time here!!! We stopped in on Father's day for a drink & rest while shopping in Montemartre. The piano player was about to go on so we stayed a little longer. We left but came back for dinner. The food was excellent and entertainment was even better. We had frogs legs for the first time. Really yummy. Also Snails, beef carpaccio & mussels. The stars of our meal were beef bourguignon and lamb shank with mashed potatoes. I'm giving it the fifth star because their service is great! All the restaurants were booked and we were turned away by another restaurant. They accommodated our 8-person party as walk-ins. So grateful to eat here. I would give this a 5 for the food and a 3 for the service and 2 for the wobbly tables and uneven floors. Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to give a bad review. There could be some improvements. The food was delicious. The coffee was delicious except the fact that we got charged full price for a coffee and full price for a drink which made the tiny lattes $16.75 each and we ordered 6 because it was cold and rainy outside. We spent a more on 6 drinks then we did for the food lol. I'm not sure if there was a language barrier with us and the waitress, or if she just didn't want to understand so that was a little frustrating. Also, when we asked for our bill, they said cash only. The door clearly shows they take credit cards. The people at a table near us went outside to an ATM and got cash. We told them we didn't have enough cash and only had a credit card. Then magically they brought the POS machine over to run our credit card. Not sure if this was legit or a scam, maybe it was an off day. I would recommend for the food. read more

This review may change, but this is just my initial impression of the restaurant. I walked up and was the first person in line, and the server was clearly busy. However, I'm not sure why he walked out walked past me, and immediately started speaking with these two lovely young French women. When I tried to get his attention he essentially gave me the "wait a second hand wave " He seated these lovely young women, and their companion, and got them settled and then almost as an afterthought sat me. So far he's got them situated and has spent about 13 seconds talking to me. He immediately spoke to me in English, and I don't like to make assumptions, but I'm guessing he assumes I am American and therefore I am saddled with all the baggage that comes with that. I get that I am at a very popular, touristy sort of restaurant. So I will post this now, and modify/amend as the evening goes on. read more

Cult classic location so we were excited to go after Moulin Rouge. Staff was wonderful, Mojito was fine, I've had some amazing ones so this was ok compared to those. I had a red wine and the Beef Bourguignon. The meat was soft and the vegetables nice, there was a rich flavor. Again, I've had amazing so this one was not one I loved. My daughter had the salmon. It had a lovely flavor, everything was good about her dish except the fish was very soft. Not a consistency we particularly enjoyed or are used to. Maybe that's how it is in Paris, not sure, still it was a good dinner. read more

Very nice, festive looking place there as the lights, picnic table cloths and black cat pics are enough to peak your interest to come inside as thats what happened to me while walking around the Moulin Rouge area. Was solo so I grabbed a seat at the bar and grabbed a menu. I saw they had some beers on tap that I am obviously not used to seeing. I am a fan of the Leffe brand and saw they had Leffe Ruby in which I've never seen in the states. Its a fruit beer in which I usually have to be in the mood for, but this was very good. I took a look around and noticed that many groups of friends, first dates and old couples were all enjoying themselves...I knew from that I was in for a good dining experience and was gonna have some good food. I saw lots of goodies float through the air and past me but I settled on a lamb dish with mashed potatoes and carrots which was very good and pretty tender...loved it! I saw some awesome desserts go by me and one in particular was pretty popular. It was a slice of chocolate cate with caramel and vanilla ice cream...this was amazing and I wanted another one. The look and taste was so good that I forgot to take a picture of it for you all to see LOL! Great place to stop by if you're in the area. Great setting/environment, great food & desserts and solid service. I would definitely come back when in Paris. read more

This should be more like 3.5 stars. Needed a break from walking and happened to be passing by at the same time. The waitress was extremely friendly making sure we were comfortable. She spoke really good English. She appeared to be serving the entire restaurant by herself inside and out. She was efficient. It was happy hour and she went over the specials with us. We decided on the sparkling wine. She pushed pretty hard to upsell us on some things. When I didn't order their most popular dish she still tried to get me change my mind and order it. I also just wanted the small cheese board and she made it seem like I would be getting nothing with it and she sold me a big cheese and charcuterie plate. She asked us to pay cash but we didn't have enough cash on us so we paid with a card. The food was good, not great. The charcuterie board was so big (I knew it would be too much) and most of it went to waste since all I wanted was the small cheese board. The tartare was seasoned well and the fries were nice and crispy. The restaurant was a little dirty. The table cloth had stains all over it. The restrooms were not the cleanest either. Overall not a bad place to stop if you need a quick break. I don't think I ever need to come back though. read more

Located in the heart of Montmarte, embedded in between the many erotic shops all along Boulvard de Clichy is this bistro. It's a nice, decent bistro, serving both cafe and plenty of alcohol behind their bar. I came in for dinner before the Moulin Rouge show and this place seemed a nice and quiet place amongst all the lights and glitter of Montemarte and the Pigelle areas. Service was pretty decent, just the manager dude and a waitress girl working tonight and both worked pretty hard. Started off with complimentary nuts and olives. Olives were nice and salty. For my starter, I went with goat cheese and tomatoes. Went well with their unlimited bread and balsamic vinagrette. Nice and freshly made. It was actually a pretty big for a starter and knowing that I had something bigger coming up next, I chose to not finish it. But still, a pretty good dish to share. For my main, I went with their rib steak with frites. Came with greens and mixed vegetables. Steak was kinda bland, basically just a piece of meat put on the grill. Needed some salt and pepper. And for dessert, I had their pear tart. They make different flavored tarts everyday, and this evening was the pear version. It was nice and warm. It was light but rich in flavor. They also have many beers on taps, and you can choose from the different sizes of glasses. My Edelweiss was nice and fruity. Ambiance was decent. There's outdoor seating too and with heatlamps. My favorite dinner place in the area. The service is always excellent and friendly. The food is super yummy. I would recommend getting the Fish and Chips! Whenever I am away from Paris my tastebuds dream of how delicious the food is here. I would also recommend getting the Nutella Brioche as a dessert if you're in the mood! They also have live music at nights by an excellent pianist/vocalist. 11/10 would recommend! read more

First and foremost NEVER NEVER NEVER order any cocktails here, they will scam you. They will, without warning double the prices of cocktails by asking for a small, medium or large. Consider the price for a base small drink is more than good central London spots. The staff will then ask you about the size of your drink without indicating an increased price, indeed such size differences are not even listed on the menu. Despite an excellent range of food (I had an beautiful, fairly priced steak tartar) I do not expect to be hoaxed into such excessive deception. Until they clean up their practices I would avoid and wander on to one of the many other beautiful cafes in Montmartre. read more

I had every time of rectifying the mistake with my credit card company stateside But I wanted to have one more dinner here before heading home And I mentioned the mistake to our waitress Who got the manager Who gave us some champagne while we waited to settle the problem With the owner Who gave us more champagne while we waited Who got our waitress Who apologized profusely (despite the fact that we had no receipt, or any other kind of proof) And reimbursed us in cash And gave us more champagne I love that that was the way they dealt with a customer problem. read more

Although the iconic poster art of this cafe bar's namesake has been at the forefront of trendy pop culture in modern times, the Chat Noir was at the forefront of bohemian Paris once upon a time! Once a cabaret and stomping ground for the famous bohemians, it was rumoured that when they shut the place down for a few years it left Picasso and his contemporaries devastated. Salis, the famous owner and personality of the venue, seduced his hedonistic contemporaries by purchasing a (then) outlawed piano. It was a very taboo, bold thing to do but when the deed was done, the punters flocked in their droves to enjoy good music and toe stamping music. Now, the Chat Noir reaps the benefits of its history, and can afford to maintain a classy exterior and inflated price range since tourists and locals will still be drawn in. Although a bottle of Corona cost a jaw dropping amount, the atmosphere and ambience of the Chat Noir is very pleasant indeed. The staff have a good sense of humour and tolerated my terrible French. You receive table service and can relax in the nice environment. As a modern bar it's well kept, without losing its old fashioned charm. But what keeps the customers coming is its heritage. The crackling vibrance of idealistic days gone by still lingers in the air, and makes drinking in the Chat Noir quite a lovely experience. read more

The Bistrot Chat Noir has the best foie gras in the world. No seriously. It does. I wanted a light dinner and decided to order the foie gras with onion chutney off of the appetizer menu for dinner. I was shocked by how amazing it was. Wait, so how amazing was it? The next day we had lunch at Jules Verne in the Eiffel Tower and we were served the $68 foie gras app that didn't hold a candle to the $12 one we had at Bistrot Chat Noir. It is made off site (at an amazing butchery I'm sure) and I was in heaven. Other notes: English menu was great to have. Beef bourguignon was very good. Outside seating was perfect. Staff went out of their way to make sure we were all set. Great location. I will 100% go back here when I'm in Paris. read more

My experience here was bad, beyond bad. We showed up to dine quickly prior to seeing The Moulin Rouge. We had a limited amount of time and were told they would be able to meet our time constraints. That's about the only part of the meal that was successful. Upon ordering, I got the French Onion Soup and my boyfriend ordered duck confit. Both standard easy French dishes you'd think, we wee sorely mistaken. My soup was inedible. Too much salt, too much of a not so tasty flavor. The duck confit - it wasn't duck but chicken. Now, telling the difference between chicken and duck isn't that difficult to tell, and when we addressed this with our waiter his response was "no, it's duck, quack quack." Really??? To top this all off, our waiter ended up in a physical fight with a patron right in front of us that didn't make us feel safe in the restaurant. While a patron left without paying, watching the staff get in a fight with this gentleman and his friends was not fun to watch and made us a little concerned for our own safety. Needless to say, with the bad service and even worse food, after paying for this over priced disaster of a meal, we ended up having another meal after The Moulin Rouge as we didn't want this to be our last Parisian meal. (This is all happening at 3am) The dessert was the caramel filled molten cake with a side of gelato...not too shabby, it wasn't American fatty delicious but it was pretty good. Their hot chocolate was subpar especially after having Tres Honore's. But the waitstaff's energy and friendliness was most memorable!!! They were dancing, greeting, hugging all while delivering food...i loved it, and will return not just for dessert but for a great French hug :) read more

TL;DR - avoid cocktails, but look out for their daily menu. The thing about this place is that it *is* good, but a bit expensive. It is also right in the heart of Pigaille next to the Moulin Rouge and uses an iconic french symbol. Of course you are going to pay a premium for that kind of location. I do not know about the supposed cocktail scams as I went in the middle of the day to have their daily lunch menu. It was surprisingly affordable and quality was right on. I had a special burger made with some thai ingredients that was tasty and well worth it's 14 euros. Service is very good (it is a bit of a classy place), ambiance is usually live jazz music and food is good. If I can recommend anything, try their "Soupe à l'ognion". read more

Always dislike giving a bad review to anything in Paris, because Paris and the French are generally beautiful, great and friendly. However, I had a very unpleasant encounter with a waiter here. Their policy is to charge credit cards at 10 euros or more but nothing is posted stating this. The bill was 8 euros, and neither my guest or I had the change. I said to my friend this is not permitted in the United States (to have a required amount for credit card charges, or they should have it posted somewhere on the menu). He replied, "this isn't the United States." Firstly, I wasn't talking to him. I was talking to my girl friend, as we tried to sort out what coins we had together. Secondly, I probably shouldn't have gotten mad, but I couldn't stand his snarky reply. I said in response, "that is stupid," as in- "that is a stupid policy." He became enraged, taking it personally, saying I called him stupid. Obviously, he doesn't know English well enough, nor I know French well enough to correct him. However, I finally did call him stupid when he got into my face. I stood up, as an equal, because men should never dominate a woman...local, foreign or not. Needless to say, I let him charge me 10 euros for the 8 euros coffees...but I will no longer go there while in Montmartre/Pigalle, and will make sure to let others know not to go there either. I was recently in Paris and while walking down the street found the Bistrot Chat Noir. My friend and I both English speakers had no problem ordering and found the staff was very polite and helpful. You always hear that Parisians do not like to speak English with native speakers, I didn't experience this on my trip and think that could just be a stereotype that is applied by loud/rude tourists :) The menu was available in English and was a mixture of French and fusion dishes, I think there was even a burger available. I had the raviolis with mushrooms which were wonderful. They were served in one of those little Le Creuset rounds with a side salad. I had a beer and selected from a pretty good assortment from all over the world. I would give my food and experience 4 stars. My Irish friend felt like experimenting and had the salmon lasagna. He didn't really say much about the meal other than it was good, but not great. I think he would rate it more like a 3. Overall the place was cool. There was a man playing piano and singing tunes, occasionally his son, probably 8 or 9, would join in for a duet. It's really close to the Mulin Rouge and right off the Blanche metro, if you can figure out the metro that is! Have fun! read more

We had to wait for our server to finish his cigarette before he came to our table and then asked us to wait as he went to go get us menus. 10 minutes later, he came back with the menus and asked us what we wanted to drink, which we didn't know what the specials were since we didn't have the menus yet. Came here before our show at the Moulin Rouge. I clearly was overdressed because this is a casual scene with picnic cloth tables so if you're looking for a fancy restaurant, this isn't it. Our service was very slow. They ran out of menu items because we placed an order for duck confit and then our waiter came back way later to say they don't have it. The happy hour really isn't all that. You're eating your meal AND cigarette smoke - and we sat on the inside. Chicken breast wasn't that good... tough to cut. Charcuterie was less than decent. Looking for a spot to stop and have a drink while roaming the district... cool. But don't take your lady here for a fancy Paris night out and don't be too hungry. read more
