Small and intimate venue with a great vibe, outstanding food and excellent service. And phenomenal wines. This really is an all-star production. Every single dish was a huge hit. The black pudding tasted like chocolate cake (according to our 14 yr old); the braised pork with cabbage was perfect seared and juicy and the beef tartare was full of flavor. If we had another day we would have gone back for another meal. Next time we're in town we definitely will. And don't forget their wines. read more

We shared starters of yellow pollock ceviche (good but had much better ones elsewhere), pan fried cuttlefish (again good but nothing special), aguachile of shellfish (that one was very nice for the hot weather we were having) and last but not least fried eel and aragula pesto (best starter of the night and one of the best eel I have ever eaten) a must order if its on the menu. A particularity of this restaurant is that they only have natural wine so quite young wines. The wine is very nice on a hot day but lacks of character to my opinion. A bare bones bistro featuring shelves full of organic/biodynamic French wines. The kitchen pumps out the simplest of dishes. Reservation is essential, as this place gets packed, especially, on weekends. I visited for lunch, and enjoyed the experience. That said, I found the service to be, well, a little difficult in that only Parisian kind of way. If you don't speak French, get ready for some attitude here, or, a lengthy delay getting any type of wine served on time, et cetera. (At one point, I was just about to get up from my table, grab any red bottle I could find on the library walls of wine around me, and bring it to any server to open for me!) My husband and I went here on our first night in Paris fresh off the plane after 30 hours straight of traveling and no sleep. We were refreshed after arriving at this cute little wine bar with creative small plates, great ambiance, and a nice selection of tasty natural wines. What a great neighborhood gem and introduction to local Parisian life! Our senses were yanked out of jet lagged dreaminess by lovely seasonal small dishes and a big bold beautiful wine. We were delighted by the creative plates: -Tuna belly with fromage blanc and strawberry sauce -Razor clams with shitake mushrooms and a delicious broth -Suckling lamb liver with leaks -Guinea fowl duo -White chocolate mint pot de creme with juicy grapefruit slices -A cheese plate that was out-of-this world...I love French cheeses! Everything was fresh, tasty, and satisfying. It was the perfect place to share, have great conversation and enjoy the little things in life. It was a cozy space where we were able to mingle in with the locals, watch the kitchen, and feel like we belonged. The service was very helpful and gave some good recommendations. This local experience is highly recommended followed by a night-time stroll along Canal St. Martin where local kids gather to drink and hang out. It felt almost dream-like (but maybe that was the jet lag and lack of sleep). I would love to come back here the next time we're in Paris. read more

Well, it's a wine bar in Paris - how bad could it be? I got very lucky. My friend lives there and *she* knows a wine guy and *he* said, this is the place to go and boy was he ever right! We had the most amazing wine and food there. I will post a picture of what I had - kind of a beef stew over noodles. I think we had about five different wines. You would never know it to look at this place that it's also a killer restaurant. What was funny was that one of the wines was bad. Our wine guy sniffed it out. All of a sudden, the waiters, the owner, everyone was involved. C'est catastrophe! :) Anyway, they made a big fuss over us after that and we got even more wines! Total hipster neighborhood gem! You literally cannot get in without a reservation. It's a true neighborhood gem frequented by locals. They were turning away 50% of the people who walked in because none had a reservation. Food was really good and the atmosphere charming local bistro - hustle bustle and all in all a super experience. We had the traditional fare of pork belly and sausage was simple but so yummy. Hey this is not the Ritz but it doesn't pretend to be. Came here for lunch on my way out of town - I found it on Yelp - and turned out to be one of my favorite meals in Paris. Pretty casual place. Great wine list - I tried two different white wines on recommendation of the server and they were perfect. The menu is small and changes often (every day?). One of the worst experiences I've ever had in my life. Let me start off by saying I have been in the service industry for 12 years as a server and bartender. I am a nice person and extremely gracious to servers, since I am one! Around Paris I knew a little French and would always ask people if they spoke English instead of just assuming. With all this being said: Two out of the three servers that night were literal nightmares. Our main server was aggressive, rude, mean, and arrogant. In our first exchange I had explained that I wasn't familiar with their wines, but am open to trying new wines and I normally like Chardonnay's to give you a sense of my taste. He retorted with 'We don't have any Chardonnays!" and walked away. I was judged for no reason as soon as I sat down, I can't help but think it is because I am an American and also a woman. The exchanges throughout the night got increasingly worse. To highlight a few: he was pointing me out and talking about me from the kitchen, when I politely asked for water and share plates he just walked away and never gave us either of those items, then when we asked the other rude server he basically threw two share plates at us and MINE HAD A DEAD FLY ON IT. Let me be clear, it wasn't a fly that just landed, it had been on there and dead for a while. As a server myself- the dining experience is supposed to be one of enjoyment- you are literally leaving your own house to not only have other great food and drink but also to have an experience. And to give no care for what you do and the experience you are giving people is a complete disgrace. And it's hard for me not to think the fly was intentional . Yet, we didn't yell, or even complain about the fly, we meekly asked for a new share plate and quietly stated that there's a fly on this one. The server ripped it our of my friend's hand ( no apology) and literally threw a new one on the table. I obviously couldn't enjoy myself at all or eat or drink for that matter so after a few more rude exchanges enough was enough and I had to leave. When we went to cancel the rest of our order I told them that I was extremely uncomfortable because of their actions. No apologies, and nothing was comped. I wasn't looking for anything free but WOW. When our main server came to collect payment, (the fastest I saw him do something for us all night) I calmly expressed how uncomfortable and awful he made me feel and how that's really not okay to make another human being feel so badly for no reason and that I hoped he doesn't treat anyone else as badly as he treated us because we just don't need more of that in the world. He aggressively replied back ' That's how I treat all the customers'. If that's his motto, I think that's all you need to know of why you should NEVER go to this establishment. I had such a traumatic experience that I had to leave the restaurant so I could cry. The experience you'll get from this restaurant is not a good one to say the least. I spent my last dinner in Paris at this wine bar/resto, and it was well worth the 45-min wait. We didn't have a reservation, and arrived around 9pm on a wednesday, hoping the crowds had cleared out by then, but alas, this cozy restaurant was full up to the brim with all ages of people enjoying wine and good food. The host - dressed in jeans and a trendy t-shirt, alluding to the slight hipster nature of this place - told us it would be a half-hour to 45 minute wait. He suggested the bar across the street, but that place too was overly crowded with nowhere to sit. So we walked around the Canal St. Martin (two buildings away from Le Verre Volé), watching the reflection in the water. Once seated across from the wine cellar, the waiter apologized for the wait, and amicably suggested a red wine (which i can unfortunately not remember the name of). We ordered; We shared a sort of asian salad with nuts and citrus, and I got the Saucisse de Toulouse, with mashed potatoes and spinach. Perhaps it was because we were so hungry, but everything melted in our mouths. After our food, we ordered dessert but they were out of what we wanted so they comped our order of fromage blanc with jam. Above and beyond :) We even made friends with the adults at the table next to us! I would definitely recommend this place, but i would strongly recommend making a reservation, especially if you're trying to go on a weekend. What can I say ? I'm a fan. Had heard a lot of blah blah about Le Verre Volé before checking it out with my visiting cousin last month. It was the perfect sort of indulgent girls night out atmosphere, complete with cute, friendly waiters, and excellent wine recs. We had a dry white from Roussillon. I want to drink this wine every day. The food was light--just what the tummy ordered for a warm summer night--a fresh avocado and crab dish, thin slices of cool, well dressed veal, and crisp cabbage & truffle salad. It's raining in Paris and it's Monday. I only eat one bread in Paris and they're closed on the weekend. So off we go to Du Pain et Des Idées near Canal Saint-Martin. With bread safe in market bag we say what now? Lunch is in full swing but we're not too hungry after a nice home (apartment) cooked breakfast. How about a glass of wine, nothing else to do since it's raining? I always wondered if I could squeeze into Le Verre Vole for just wine and cheese. Maybe years ago but now reservations, even for lunch, are de rigueur. But the rain is really coming down and it's 13:30 and I know they close the doors at 14:00. Let's see what happens. We walk in and see a small table just about to leave. We acknowledge no reservations but he says just a minute we have this table open. We are seated and I ask if there is any Chablis? We only have a Premier Cru he responds. Natural wine I ask? Of course! is the response. This bottle will be special, I just know it. We leave for Burgundy next week and I need to practice drinking good wine. We order the cheese plate and Bordier butter which is served along with previously mentioned bread fro Du Pain. It' raining, we're drinking, the music is playing and at once I know I am in Paris. So I think we got super lucky to have this all work out but be sure to get there before 14:00 since they really like to end the lunch service. More like 3.5 stars. Le Verre Volé (The Stolen Glass) is a nice little unpretentious bistro with inventive cuisine. It's located near the Saint-Martin canal, along which it is always a good idea to take a digestive stroll after a good meal. Just don't lean too close if you had one (stolen?) glass too many. If you have still room you could also have a dessert at nearby Du Pain et des Idées, one of the best bakeries in Paris. But that would work only for lunch. Prices are reasonable: 2 starters, 2 entrées, 1 dessert and 4 (smallish) glasses of wine for Eu 100, tax and tip included = Not bad for Paris. The starters were very original. Mine was a very fresh and creamy ball of mozzarella with thin slices of duck breast and orange segments (sounds weird, but surprisingly, it worked). Hers was a roasted pigeon with sweet potato purée (nice, also with an orange-y flavor). Our entrées were: roasted lamb on a bed of bulgur and green peas, with a yogurt-mint sauce (well executed); and a roasted chicken with mash and green salad (so-so: great rich mash but the chicken was just OK, not great). The dessert was a custard tart with a spoonful of strawberries and raspberries on top. Tiny slice but we were pretty full by then, so it was enough. Service was affable but could have been more attentive (very very casual). All the staff speak (broken) English, and they have menus in English. Almost all patrons in the restaurant were not French, so they are used to it. The only negatives were (1) sad, tired decor, with 2 small cramped rooms indoor which get uncomfortably hot as soon as the outside temperature goes beyond 77 F; (2) we were underwhelmed by 3 out of 4 wines by the glass we tried. Overall, I am not sure that they are worth coming back, given that there are over a dozen casual fine dining restaurants that are better in Paris. read more

This is an odd little place with great food and wine. The hipster vibe is very noticeable but the staff is very knowledgable about their wines. We ordered the escargot/pasta soup that was very very good. It was full of flavor and was enough to share. For the mains we ordered the duck with pumpkin puree and the pork belly with potato puree. the pork belly was amazing and the pumpkin puree was one of the best things we ate in our week stay in Paris. Such a simple side dish but it made the meal unforgettable. The duck was average but the pork and pumpkin puree were standouts. The wine the server suggested complimented our meals very well. Their menu changes everyday but you have to make reservations so it's sort of a crap shoot, but I have to tell you my chef boyfriend and I ate there twice on our short visit to Paris and both times they did not disappoint. Heads up, these guys are serious about their wine. There isn't a list as they will recommend a wine for you based on what you order from their short, delicious, seasonal menu. They have a menu in English but don't be fooled, everything here is authentic and amazing! Enjoyed a quiet dinner sitting at one of the outside tables - two different seared Mediterranean tunas with summer vegetables and homemade potato crisps and for dessert, the fig with goat cheese. The food at the table next to me looked great too - they ordered my second choice - the house special sausage, potato puree and salad, and they were raving about it too. We loved this place. It was down the street from our rented flat, so we checked it out for dinner on a holiday evening. We sat on the sidewalk, which was fun for watching the cars and people go by. We had soup and barnacles to start, which were good and different from what we could get back home. For main courses we had the chicken and the duck, which were incredible. The flavor and quality were outstanding. We had a red wine our server recommended that we really enjoyed, paired well with everything. He also told us it was strawberry season, so we had the strawberries in kiwi sorbet, which blew our heads off it was so good. I've been twice now, and due to an upset stomach I had to avoid anything too complex so I chose the stuffed cabbage. WOW. I don't think i have ever in my life enjoyed stuffed cabbage so much! Seriously. Mashed potatoes and a light green salad came with it. Good idea since the star of the show was the cabbage. I didn't have any wine on this visit, but the waiters are willing to advise and you can carry away a bottle if you want another one for the road or a picnic the next day. You must get reservations. Based on the glowing reviews this place gets I came in with high hopes. Unfortunately for me Le Verre Volé did not deliver. I chose to come here with my parents and boyfriend after my parents had spent 5 days of intense food and wine touring in Boudreaux. This was their last night in Paris and we wanted something not too expensive, and not too traditional or heavy because they were tired of indulging. I found this place on Yelp, and my boyfriend called to make a booking (he mentioned the person on the phone wasn't super polite, but we didn't really think anything of it). We arrived and had a nice little table in the corner. The restaurant itself is cute, something you'd expect to see near the canal. We ordered 4 glasses of wine because we all wanted different things. It was a bit weird that we didn't get to try the wines before a full glass was poured (as usually I'm used to being able to taste when you order by the glass...also my dad did not like his wine at all and would have liked to have tried it before getting a full glass. And my boyfriend was given a glass of white when he ordered red. The waiter said he ordered it and he assured her he ordered the red at which point she took it away, but wasn't so happy to do so it seemed). Anyway, we ordered 1 pollock dish, 2 veals, and a vegetarian dish for me. My mom's fish came and looked great. But then nothing else came for over five minutes. So we told her to start otherwise her food would be cold. She said it was delicious. Then my dad and boyfriend's veal came. I told them to start without me because there was no vegetarian food in sight. My dad's was already cold and most of the meat was inedible (he really had to saw through it and did not enjoy it). My boyfriend liked his. I finally got my food over 10 minutes after the first dish came out. It was good- ratatouille with some radishes and carrots and a poached egg (I'd give the food 3.5-4 stars). The service overall just wasn't good. From the initial booking, to the huge delays in food (the table next to us had the same problem, the fish came out ages before the other dish) I am not a fan. I don't think the wait staff really cared whether we were happy or not as no one asked as our plates were taken away (my dad's piled up high with fat and inedible gristle), and overall it was not a warm or welcoming experience. There are so many restaurants in Paris that I wouldn't waste my time if I were you at a place like this. Bad service in Paris tends to be a myth, but not at Le Verre Volé. read more

This is a review from the summer of 2012 that I forgot to finish. My wife and I met a waiter at another restaurant who happened to have girlfriend near us in Virginia where we live. So, in exchange for a promise to put him and his gal up in our guest room when he visits over Christmas, he took us to "his Paris" Le Verre Volé ( "The Stolen Glass" was the pinnacle of our bistro experience. The food was tasty but I am giving the restaurant one star on account of the incredibly rude owner or manager of the restaurant. My friend and I decided to come here on the evening that we reunited after two years (we live in different countries). Since we are both students and young professionals and were not very hungry that evening, we decided to order a drink and an appetizer. We made our intention clear to our server. When the owner/manager brought the check, he made a sly remark that we were not allowed to have made a reservation if we only ordered a drink and appetizer. He then snatched the drink that I was still in the middle of finishing and ordered us outside. It was an awful experience and put a damper on our otherwise special evening. read more

This is one of our favourite places to eat in the world. The staff is friendly, and the menu is small and seasonal. The boudin noire is amazing - it has the consistency of chocolate mousse and all the flavour of a liver pate. Servings are big enough, but the restaurant sometimes isn't. I'm giving it a four star because I admire an atmosphere that is at once crowded and private though I'm not sure it's everybody's cup of tea. The price point is okay, and the wine suggestions weren't all that memorable. read more

Pleasurable dining experience ruined by the stopwatch What delicious wine! What a charming waiter! In his black t-shirt and jeans, he has just the right dose of willingness to explain the minutiae of the menu and offering excellent wine recommendations, while not invading our space. My friend and I are long-time residents of Paris, and he wanted to take me here because he'd been to le Verre Volé before and loved it. We each ordered one of the two plats du jour (acorn-fed pork for me, cuttlefish for him) and immediately declared them excellent. What gives then? Our whole wonderful dining experience came crashing down when, just after paying the bill (110 euros) we settled in to chat and finish off the bottle of Morgan, only be interrupted by another waiter - much sterner and unsmiling this one - in no uncertain terms that we had to clear out. We had arrived a bit after 8 pm, it was now 10:20 pm, and our time was up! Just to make sure the restaurant truly meant to treat us like ...., I motioned to our original charming waiter, who confirmed that we had to get out. When we reserved, he said, they'd told us we had to leave for the second service starting at 10 pm. First, this is not true: they did not inform us ahead of time that our gastronomic delight would turn into a pumpkin two hours after we started. Second, and more importantly, this is a shoddy way to treat a couple who are willing to pay a decent price (110 euros is over $140) for a night out in Paris, where talking into the wee hours over a glass of delicious wine is one of the joys of living here. Despite all its quirky charms and delicious fare, I will not return to the Verre Volé because I did not appreciate being told to leave. I simply loved this place. It is small, cosy and very different - in a good way. Since our French is a little rusty, we had some problems with the menu. The absolutely adorable staff :-)) helped us out, so we went with the daily specials and their wine recommendations and we're happy with it. This place is trendy without trying to be. Really wanted to like this place, but the pork dishes were completely underwhelming. You're probably safe with seafood here, though, so get that. I loved the tuna ceviche for starters that I got and the tuna main looked great, but the rack of pork and Guinea fowl were incredibly dry and tasteless. I was honestly surprised they even put something like that out. The service was okay - wasn't bad, wasn't amazing. Wine pairings: their saving grace (even though they don't offer tasting prior to pouring you a full glass). I've been told their food menu changes regularly so maybe it's more of a hit/miss thing. But with this current menu (as of August 2016), and given the plethora of restaurants around Paris, I wouldn't make reservations to dine here. read more

Last night. I booked a table for the 9:30 pm service over a week ago. My friends and I arrived on time but were made to wait 30 minutes outside in the cold, where it was drizzling. Our first waitress offers no apology whatsoever. Apparently for her, this is normal. Finally, at 10pm, we are allowed back inside to sit at our table. By this time, we're cold and starving. And yet, we only see our starters (and bread!) at 10:30 pm. The second waiter does not apologize either or even understand why we might be annoyed. When the bill arrives, we mention the shortcomings and ask if they can make a gesture, or some form of compensation. The headwaiter - a young blond gentleman who has obviously never eaten in a restaurant outside France - appears to be outraged by our request. First of all, our reservation for 3 people was a problem (just let us know if we're bothering you by paying your exorbitant prices!), then argues, saying "everyone here is happy except you". Unwilling to admit even the slightest error, he says we can continue to talk until 2 am and then "go complain on TripAdvisor". He then starts yelling at his cooks, saying, "These people say the food is disgusting!" No, sir: the service was disgusting and your cynicism and arrogance will harm your business in the end. I've translated this into English in the hopes that foreign tourists will also know who they're dealing with and also boycott your establishment. read more
