We learned about Lawrence Barbecue through a TikToker and had to check it out. It was impossible to make decisions on what to get with it being our first time, so we decided to get a 1/2lb pulled pork, 1/2lb brisket and then the deviled egg potato salad, mac and cheese and baked beans as our sides. The brisket was definitely the star of the show and would give this a 5 star review alone however we found the sides to be a little lackluster and needing more salt & pepper than I like to add. One thing I would change about the potato salad would be to dice the potatoes a little smaller as the large chunks are a little much, but that's just my personal preference. The positives: easy to order online, food was ready right on time for pickup, people were friendly and helpful. I like the ambience and location. The two sides of baked beans and slaw were very good. The ribs were cooked to fall off the bone tender and juicy. Negative: The ribs were literally tasteless. No smoke at all and no taste from the slight coating. Almost as if they were boiled. Tried them for the first time today, for breakfast! I had the hot chicken on blueberry, wife had the pulled pork on brown sugar biscuit. Both were amazingly good and fresh. Still warm when I got them home. Also nabbed the cinnamon holes, they were dangerously good! :D Located in RTP Boxyard off of Hwy 54, just a great spot with lots of ourdoor seating, and a variety of eats to be had there. Coffee shops, Korean BBQ, bakeries, Wine bars, beer & pizza spot. Like a Brightleaf Square kinda place, but not much retail, just food & drink mostly. Which is fine by us! Tl;dr: Cute atmosphere for meeting people, amazing barbecue! Best wings I've had in NC so far. One gripe regarding their potato salad Went here midday on Friday and it had a decent amount of people, without the crowds and long lines that you'd see on the weekend. As we approached Lawrence, I saw a solid amount of people with wings and knew I had to try it. I got their combo plate with ribs and wings with a side of deviled egg potato salad. It came with two ribs and three wings. The ribs were smoked well, and held together but still very tender upon biting into it. The bone was left CLEAN when I was done. The wings were perfectly smoky AND crispy on the outside, still carrying significant flavor and juiciness on the inside which is hard to do with wings since they are small and non-uniform in shape. The potato salad... hmm I'm going to quote Randy Jackson: yea it's gonna be a no from me dawg. I love deviled eggs so I was excited about this! Unfortunately the flavor was absolutely lacking, even for a standard potato salad. To add "deviled eggs" to the name infers a flavor profile similar to deviled eggs, tangy, creamy and rich. The potato salad did well with the creamy and had eggs in it... but completely lacking in flavor, costing them a star. Otherwise, I will absolutely go back! I may try the potato salad again if one of my friends get it, hoping for an improvement in flavor but otherwise I'd rather get another side. read more

I am a 70 year old NC native, and have eaten at most of the best bbq restaurants in NC. I took my grandson to Lawrence BBQ for a late lunch. We both got the pulled pork with beans and collards. The bbq was tender but tasteless, even with the extra sauce. The brisket beans were too hot, tasteless, and without any meat in them. The collards were also too hot and had a very strange taste. It didn't come with hush puppies, but did come with a thick slice of untoasted, unbuttered bread. The tea was bottled, and could be bought in any convenience store. All for over $40. You order at a window and pick it up when your name is called, so no table service. Needless to say, we will not be coming back. read more

I was craving barbecue so we placed our order online and picked it up curbside at Lawrence Barbecue. I really liked that they had different sizes for the meats (available options- 1/4, 1/2 and 1 lb) and sides (available options- 1/2 pint, pint and quart). This was perfect for us because we wanted to try a few of the side items. We ordered the brisket, sticky spare ribs, deviled egg potato salad, grilled beach BBQ beans + bacon, three cheese mac, sweet corn + poblano + cotija and roasted brussels + hot honey. The sauces we chose were the cheerwine BBQ and leroy's bama white. The meats and most sides were amazing, the only sides I personally didn't care for were the beans and deviled egg potato salad. I noticed that they do change up the side options so I can't wait to try this spot again. On another note, I saw that they currently have two crosstown cocktail options available. I was craving wings today and decided to give Lawrence BBQ a try. I tried the Hot Honey and Beef Fat Caramel wings. The wings were a little overcooked so I had to dock a star but the flavor was there. The Brussel sprouts?? No notes. Fire! The fries were well seasoned but I wish they were warmer. I did have to travel home to eat and they lost a hit of heat along the way, but the seasoning made the cool fries worth it. When I arrived there was a line so I am very glad I ordered online. I went during a lunch rush I suppose. They are located at the boxyard so there are other restaurants and plenty of outdoor seating. For my ranch lovers, this is the watery kind like wingstop. I also got some Bama White sauce and was underwhelmed with it, it might be good on something else. Not my wings. I didn't get to try the BBQ sauce. Great location. At a place called "Boxyard" which is some type of outdoor / canopied food hall. Great concept, well executed. If you like BBQ, but others with you don't, there are lots of options. And they have live music / events on weekends. Definitely worth checking out. Back to Lawrence BBQ. Service was friendly and fast. Prices are above average, but not extreme. The food. Brisket was 10/10. Just fabulous. Pulled pork was 9/10. Not the best I've ever had, but darn good. I was not a fan of the wings. They are coated with tamarind, so if that's your thing - you're in luck - sadly it is not my thing. The sides were okay. The Mac & Cheese was flavorful and I enjoyed the crumb top, but was too watery and loose for my tastes. Similarly, the vinegar based coleslaw was good, but I felt the addition of onions - as opposed to the traditional carrots - marred the flavor and made the dish less interesting visually. The big winner was the garnish of pickled cucumbers, jalapeños, and onions. They were all executed wonderfully. I would have liked to have seen some more variety to the side options - and would recommend to the owners putting cornbread (or better yet, blueberry cornbread) on the menu. A more traditional wing and/or other meat option (ham, sausage, etc.) would also be appreciated. Drinks are canned sodas or beer. I had an A&W root beer which paired well with the food. Shocked sweet tea wasn't on the menu. All in all, I'd go back, but I'd likely order the brisket or bbq sandwich with a side of fries and pickles. Root beer again for sure. read more

Having had my share of BBQ joints from the West Coast to the East Coast and places in-between, having settled in NC since 2002, I have always craved Texas style BBQ. I do enjoy a Southern pulled pork BBQ sandwich, the vinegar and mustard base is not what I grew up on. In the past few years, there have been new BBQ joints opening up in and around the Triangle area and when Lawrence Barbecue opened up in the "Boxyard RTP", I was eager to give them an opportunity to win over my palette. What I've ordered and my thoughts: Texas Style Brisket - I found to be tender, juicy and perfectly smoked. Tender enough that I was able to use a spoon to break off delicious morsels. Perfect amount of fat to meat ratio. "Sandos" Texas Style Brisket Sandwich - Generous amount of the same brisket piled on. Just as good. Would have been a little better if a portion of the slices included some "fatty Brisket" "Side Fixins" - Cue Beans, Tangy Slaw & Deviled Egg Potato Salad were the perfect accompaniment to the rich proteins. Customer service was spot on! During my last visit, there was a miscommunication on my part when it came to the Tangy Slaw. It was thought that I wanted the slaw mixed in with my Brisket Sandwiches when my brain meant a pint side. Even with that, they did right by providing the pint of slaw which I had my payment at the ready but instead gave it to me for the miscommunication. The Smash Mouth  Sando I ate this masterpiece in my car while staring at  the logo: a baby riding a pig. the innocence of the child:  carefree and full of wonder, being guided blissfully by a pig , its a symbol for the next generation of bbq culture being lead by our children. At that point it didn't matter ( also the weed candy was starting to kick in) the weight of the sandwich was forcing me to focus on the present moment.   The layers and colors and smells. all contrasting and complementing each other.  sharp and sweet slaw, smooth hot melted velvety cheese, the smoky brisket taste. Toasted buns makes a loud crunch and then a silence. You can hear this sandwich singing your name in a crowded room.   The first bite brought me back to riding  down the Jersey turnpike August of 2007 blasting "Steal My Sunshine" while rolling a joint in the backseat of Erica Kenndys beat up 1999 Honda Accord.  The sweet summer in between junior and senior year of highschool. you didn't know it yet it will be the summer you got your first kiss.  As you dig deeper into the patty, cheese, brisket and slaw you become more primal. I became a man in the eyes of the pork Gods after being on the other side of this Sando. The white shirt that i was wearing has now become a colorful pollack art piece of sauces and drippings.   There is no bbq culture in Jersey were I was born and raised, so I moved down here 4 years ago I had a lifetime of pork to catch up on. Most BBQ sandwiches that I have had in the past 5 years since moving here were "good" "nice" "blah" and "just ok".  Finally after this I understood the love and community around North Carolina BBQ. Y'all, I wanted to like this place, but I don't know. I was super excited to try Lawrence BBQ after their appearance on Moonshiners: Smoke Ring, and I was impressed by the meat but let down by the restaurant. Now, they know how to smoke. The rub on the brisket was great. The pulled pork was good. I'd go back for the wings for sure. Just get them to go. What they miss is a complete experience. The sides are lacking. The drinks are too bougie for a bbq joint. It all felt like a few ideas thrown together. Also, it was expensive. We got two 1/2 lbs of meat, two coleslaws, 10 wings, and two topo chicos for $54. I'm not sure how the Boxyard businesses are going to survive the winter. read more

They are not always on the menu as it is based on supply and may be gone because of customer demand. However,on this early Friday evening, I was able to have the raw and the grilled Barbecue oysters. Get them by the dozen or either half the dozen. I especially enjoyed the mignonette sauce on the raw oysters and how fresh they were. I liked the presentation of the oysters and the barbeque ones had amazing flavor! My only issue is that after being charbroiled, those lil babies shriveled to almost nothing. My husband was like where is the Oyster? They mentioned that the size were smaller than usual but it just depends on the supplier and unfortunately the price doesn't change based on size for them or me the customer. Overall, I would realistically give this place a 3.5. I think the meat are wonderful- tender and juicy and perfectly seasoned. I loved that the meat was not too salty so you can really enjoy it with the bbq sauces that came with it. I prefer the classic bbq over the vinegar based (more orange) sauce. The sides are a bit more disappointing. The Mac n cheese is very cheesy but doesn't have any special flavor or anything that makes that cheese sauce unique. I think it was also a bit under seasoned. The beans were weirdly too sweet for me and I know that was the intent, but I didn't like it. My husband really likes the sweet beans though. The fries- are to die for. Whatever the heck this dry rub is that they placed on the fries is addicting! I kept saying one more fry... until there was none left. I would definitely come again to try other things on the menu. The best brisket I've had in NC. This place is incredible. Absolutely some of the best BBQ I've ever had in North Carolina. Tucked away in a very odd outdoor food court in RTP that's built out of shipping containers Lawrence's BBQ is one of a few vendors at this location. My wife and I were here for a celebratory lunch so we ordered a larger than normal amount of food. We got 1/2lb of pork ribs, 1/4lb of beef brisket, brussel sprouts, baked beans and mac and cheese. The Brisket is the main attraction here. It's absolutely up there for best brisken contender in the Triangle area. It tastes amazing without sauce but the sauces are awesome too. The pork ribs were very good, great taste and fall-off-the-bone goodness. The Brussel sprouts are a lot of food. Not so much a side item but a full dinner portion. The mac and cheese was thick and creamy. Absolutely worth getting. The baked beans were fine but I'd pass them next time. The Brisket was so good I'd probably forgo getting the 1/2lb of ribs and just getting more brisket since it was so incredible. My biggest critiques are the staff's lack of masks. The woman interacting with the people ordering wasn't masked let alone no one in the kitchen was masked. It's not a great look as Delta starts to finally wind down and masks on food service workers packed in small kitchens is more for their safety honestly. The food is given in to-go containers regardless of eating there or taking the food to go and their to-go containers are a bit wasteful if you're eating there. I'd like the option to just have it served up on the tray without it all being packed into plast containers. Overall though this place is incredible. A must experience for any BBQ fan. read more

BLUF: "MMMMM" were the only sounds made for a good ten minutes. They had a double (or triple) smash burger special, but we went with their regular menu items. Only thing we didn't try was their sticky ribs. Both the brisket and pulled pork were DEE-lish. Moist, tender, just the right amount of fat ratio. My personal ranking on their five sides, I would recommend, in order: broccoli salad, mac and cheese, baked beans, potato salad, and slaw. The beef brisket is amazing. Best in Durham/Chapel Hill area, by far. When I've had their other items like chicken, it's also been great. Gripe: Other than brisket, the portions are small. I've been to some barbecue joints that have average, mass-produced barbecue but this is not one of them. Recently opened in the Boxyard development in Research Triangle Park, you can tell the chef/owner pays attention to quality. Honestly, I thought I was just going to order a half-pound of barbecue and a side of baked beans to take home. I didn't know the half-pound was basically an entree that came with slaw and some jalapeno peppers. First of all, the meat was smokey and delicious. The slaw was a citrus or vinegar tangy slaw, which I actually prefer to creamy slaws. This is an open air development, so it will be interesting to see what they do when it gets cold. Best barbecue in the area right now. (I've eaten there ten times or so.) The beans are a phantom--they're always sold out. (The last five times I've gone they've been out.) I suspect they make them only when they feel like it, or maybe not at all anymore. Which is a shame, as I'd come here for the beans alone--they're that good. Boxyard itself, which is mostly outdoor seating only, is--well, the weather is too hot or too cold eight months out of the year. TLDR; "Just alright" is how I'd describe it. It was pricey for what I got. The food was so-so. Service was "meh". Whole review: I got a 1/2lb Texas Brisket Plate for $22 with tip. It's one of those "pay on an iPad" things everyone hates so the tip is awkwardly there even though the service is pick-up-your-food-at-the-window and bus-your-own-table. Staff barely made eye contact with me so I'm not sure why I was presented with a tip. Maybe speedy service? Nope. I was the only person in line, somehow it still took 10 minutes for my order to be called (I get bbq isn't fast food but there's not a lot that goes into plating it up either). Nevertheless, for a big portion of top tier bbq this all would have been worth it. Unfortunately I just didn't get that. The portion was a bit anemic. The brisket was just one slice, it was a little thicker than you usually see but I'd be really surprised if it were a half pound. My single piece was taken from the tail of the brisket so it was kind of dry and all of the extra seasoning you find on the end made it very salty. The Mac and Cheese was so so. With the chives and crisps on top it had potential but the cheese was sort of thin and runny so it was more like soup. The deviled egg potato salad was amazing though, it was the real star of the show, bravo on that recipe. I will definitely try to duplicate this at home. Unfortunately it wasn't enough to make up for the solo, salty brisket slice and milky macaroni thing. If this were a $15 brisket plate the review would be better, maybe four stars. But, what I got was kind of average BBQ at sit-down restaurant prices and I still felt compelled to tip even though I was providing my own service. read more

Finally got around to trying Lawrence bbq in boxyard! First and foremost I'd like to say that Jake Wood is a great guy who is super passionate and nice. With how great Jake is, I was a little disappointed with how the women who took orders was. She was quite unpleasant and not friendly when my sister had a question. She just looked and acted like she didn't want to be there at all and that's super disappointing as Jake is such a hype guy. Anyway, on to the food. The brisket sandwich was AMAZING. it was so tender and flavorful, definitely the star of the show. The sides were a tad of a letdown compared to the meat. The Mac and cheese was extremely soupy, which was off putting to our table but the flavor was good. The brussel sprouts were a mixed bag for everyone, some enjoyed it but others,like myself, thought it was a bit too salty. The deviled egg potato salad wasn't bad but just wasn't anything special. I'd definitely go for the meat over anything else because that brisket was incredible.
