It's a slow Monday, very few people in the place...over an hour wait in the main restraunt, immediate seating in bar / lounge area, same menu. Ordered drinks and a crab cake appetizer. Very slow service. Drinks were good. Had to remind waiter to bring appetizer prior to meal. One very small crab cake $22. Good but not much flavor. Ordered Filet Mignon, charred on outside, pink and hot in the center. Suppose to come with asparagus brocolini mix and mashed potatoes. Steak was WAY over cooked, mashed potatoes was instead a sliced potato layered pie and was also way over cooked. Asparagus and Brocolini mix was good. We also ordered a bowl of red tortilla soup. Soup was not fit to eat. Cold, too spicy, hardly any chicken and needed chicken broth to thin it out. Finally got a refill on water. Tiramisu dessert was also very dry...So the keyword for this place is DRY. I mean...we know this is way out in the West Texas desert but add a little butter and cream chef! It does wonders to a dry dish! For $120 we could have gone to The 12 Gage Gourmet Restraunt with double the food portions, superbly cooked and way better tasting. Lesson learned. read more

The food and service were amazing. It's not that much more expensive than other "fancy" Marfa restaurants but took top honors in the finer dining category for us. The spring pea and ravioli app sounded so good, I wanted an entree sized portion. The waitress checked and Chef was happy to create a larger portion. The squid ink pasta was made in house and perfectly al dente. The angel food cake desert was amazing with the lime curd and blood orange sorbet. My wife agreed with the other reviewer that the three paintings with red focal images may be better somewhere else in the hotel. If you're looking for that kinda funky Marfa vibe, this is not the place. However if you just want an exceptional meal with great service, go here! read more

Hands down the worst restaurant I've ever been to. The food was less than mediocre and the staff was AWFUL. We ate here on a Wednesday so the restaurant was 1/3 full...we were seated for 20 minutes and no one even brought us a menu. My fiancé had to get up and ask for menus. No one apologized for the wait and they acted like we were bothering them by asking for the menus. We all ordered our food about an hour later - 6 entrees. 5 meals arrived and the waiter asked the person who didn't have a plate if he was planning on sharing with someone. He had ordered a filet. No apology from the waiter who then just walked away. My fiancées Dad didn't get his steak until everyone was done eating. On top of that one of our friends ordered an entree that the waitress ensured her did not come with onions and it was covered in them when it came out. No apology..again. And the new meal didn't come out until we were all done eating. I've been to Maiyas (before it closed), Cochineal, Jett's, Mandos and all the food trucks in the area. All of which are 10 times better than this place. I would never recommend it to anyone and will not be coming back. read more

Very pricey. Server was good, but the food was subpar. My husband ordered the skirt steak and it was overly salted and over priced. I had the spaghetti squash which was way too garlic-y. The Moscow Mule was delicious but super high priced for the size. The Brussels were also overly seasoned. The only thing we really liked about this restaurant was the iceberg wedge, but it is pretty hard to mess those up and the mule. The food and drinks are excellent. We had the grilled shrimp and mushroom appetizer. It was delicious! We also shared the Crabcake and El Paso Street Tacos. Everything was so good! We found this place by accident and decided to try it out. We were glad we did. It was lunch time and got two pizzas for the kids which they loved. It was thin crust so it was perfect. My husband, granddaughter, and I have made this our new favorite place to eat. We used to eat across the street and down the road and the food was good but the food, and service, at LaVenture is the best!! My husband and I had vegetarian meals tonight while my granddaughter had a great hamburger with beer battered fries. Everything was wonderful! Our favorite food server is Ryan, he is always so attentive, informative, and prompt, and has a very friendly, and delightful personality!! When we go for cocktails we really enjoy the little red head Sierra as our bartender and server. She is bubbly, very helpful, and always friendly and smiling. My husband is a business owner in this area and it can be very challenging to find good employees so I hope LaVenture knows how fortunate they are to have these two gems to represent their restaurant they are definitely keepers! We will continue to eat here and send family, friends, and clients to this restaurant to experience the good food, service, and atmosphere! Already looking forward to our next visit! read more

Went there for a weekend trip, nice restaurant and bar area I'll give them that! The ambience is very nice and relaxing, however as for the food. I believe one of two things happened that evening, either the chef was off or he doesn't taste his food, due to the food being extremely bland. If neither of the two, his Sous-chef should speak up and help him out. read more

We just stayed at the St George Hotel and had dinner at their restaurant (LaVenture) two nights in a row. Both dinners were disastrous. First night: we ordered the smoked chicken. When it came, the chicken was cold and way undercooked (bloody inside). They did not charge us for it. As we were staying two nights at the hotel, we thought we would try the restaurant again the next day, hoping that these issues were just accidental. Second night: we had made a reservation for 8:00pm. At 7:30 pm, they texted us that "you're due at LaVenture in 30 mins". We were impressed with the technology. Unfortunately, we got there at 7:55pm and had to wait 15 mins just to check-in with somebody. They are 6 different pizzas on the menu, we were told that there were no pizzas available although throughout the evening we saw a bunch of pizza boxes coming out of the kitchen. We got our first plate an hour after the time of our reservation. Problem: everything came at once. Appetizers (antipasto) and subsequent dishes. Meatballs were again cold inside. I had ordered 5 of them, only 3 came in. We had ordered a 2013 Merlot. A mediocre 2018 was delivered. That evening again, they did not charge us for several of these dishes. . In conclusion, here you have a hotel where we paid over $300 / night for a room, and a restaurant that is one of the worst we ever experienced. We eat out a lot and are ready to pay high price for good cuisine. The waiter did his very best, but their management need to work hard at improving the resource level and the skills of the kitchen staff. read more

Any other town, what you are about to read would have warranted a 3 or a 2 from me. HOWEVER! This is Marfa, and some things are just different here. LaVenture, in the Hotel Saint George (a very chic and modern hotel), has more character than I would expect to find in a hotel restaurant. The food offerings and the clientele are also more New York than West Texas. This is definitely not your Daddy's steakhouse (not that it advertises itself to be, but in many Texas towns the "nicest" restaurant will be a steakhouse). The first sign of trouble was the way the host explained that while our table was available at 7:05 pm, they would not seat us yet for our 7:30 pm reservation because the kitchen was slammed with a large group. This wasn't a problem for us, we were happy to sit at the bar for a while and wait for our reservation. While at the bar though, we witnessed several unhappy customers who were told that the kitchen was not taking any additional orders until further notice, because they were so backed up. At 7:30 we went back to the host stand, and we were seated at our table. We don't usually order an appetizer, but this night, I'm glad we did, because it was the only of our first choice items that they had available. After ordering the appetizer of baked brie and toast, the next four items that we ordered were not available. Other than being out of most of their menu, the food that we did have was enjoyable. But service was frazzled. Even though both a birthday and a wedding anniversary were mentioned on the reservation, neither were ever addressed. I was surprised at the Yelp tags that LaVenture was good for special occasions, because there was nothing about our meal or our treatment by the restaurant staff that made it feel like a special occasion. The food and dining experience that LaVenture provides in a small quirky town in West Texas is a welcome option and why I give this a 4-star rating despite the issues that we experienced because they were overwhelmed. I'm guessing that everything would be lovely if you came on a night where volume of customers met their expectations. read more

This restaurant is a hipster foodie's paradise. The guy at the table next to us spent the whole time we saw him discussing what to order, placing his order, and then talking about what he'd just ordered. These people take their food seriously. Which, honestly, was kind of fun to watch. And, the food was really fun to eat because it tasted so fresh and delicious. I had the scallops that were placed on some type of beans, which sounds like an odd combination, but with the fresh herbs and tasty sauce, it was excellent. My husband had the pea/ricotta ravioli with lump crab meat on top. Again, an odd combination but very good (he let me taste it.) We shared the chocolate torte for dessert; it was just the right texture and flavor and the crust was out of this world...so buttery and flakey. The decor was kind of a contemporary chic which fit in with the hipster vibe of the Hotel Saint George. The only negative was this set of three red blotches/modern art paintings that were in my direct line of sight. They reminded me of something very unappetizing and if I were in charge, I'd perhaps move them to the lobby or anywhere out of the restaurant. If you're in Marfa and you love food, you must make time to eat at LaVenture. read more

Worst dinner experience in Marfa. Went for wife's birthday and called ahead for reservations. A gentleman told me no reservations required and said it was first come first serve. We show up and they ask for reservations... not that bad, had to wait 20 min to be seated. We get sat and 10 min later our waiter finally comes over and says she'll be right with us. Getting annoying, but trying to make the best of my wife's birthday. We get water 15 min after being sat and we are told things are backed up if we want to order drinks and food. Long story short, we sat at the table for 45 min with only have been served water... we ordered drinks, apps, entrees, and after 45 min we had water on our table. Got up and left. Happy to post an update. Two years ago, there was very little for vegetarians and vegans. But we went Friday night for an early dinner, and the mushroom bolognese with spaghetti squash was excellent. I had such a horrible experience at La Ventura that I began writing a long review but it turned into paragraph after paragraph about how clear it is this restaurant just doesn't get "it". It being you can't seat customers then ignore them for 15 minutes. You can take orders then not check in to see that everything came out fine. You can't bus a table but not bring a check until 30 minutes later. It being that if you know you have a table you have to greet, take a second walk over and say "Hey guys, I'll be your server, just want to let you know I'll be over in a couple of minutes to take care of you." You can't be a manager and not check in on guests when you've had guest after guest ask to speak to you specifically; obviously if 4 tables have asked to talk to you, you can probably bet other tables in the dining room are having problems. Anyway, that seemed like over kill (as did what I just posted above) so instead I'll just say the following. There are other places to eat in Marfa. The food was actually pretty good (ordered the vegan spaghetti squash) but not worth what we paid. Do not eat here if you have plans for the rest of your night (you will be here much longer than you plan). Do not eat here if you want to be ignored. Do not eat here when there are other restaurants in the city that make it a point to take care of their customers. read more

On a Wednesday night, my partner and I came into LaVenture. We were very happy to know that they had a Pizza on the House. Supposedly for promotional reasons. The Bartender Brittney was very attentive and made delicious margaritas for my partner. The jalapeño margarita was okay I would say, but the regular was really good! The atmosphere is very inviting, it's pretty relaxing and definitely enjoyable. This very nice lady approached us with a set of ribs also on the house, they were pretty good also. We made an 8pm reservation for my birthday- there were only two of us. We were not sat until 8:45- they comped us each a drink and two apps which was nice, though we didn't love either (skip the shishitos and calamari). When we finally got sat, they were out of beet salad. The mashed potatoes, Brussels sprouts and filet were all great. Service wasn't so great. The waiter never came back to ask for my wine order, I asked for a red wine to go with the steak but it didn't come out until we were almost done with it. The by the glass wines were not great. My boyfriend was sick so I wasn't going to get a whole bottle for myself and was pretty unimpressed with their offerings. Overall: some good dishes, but as you'd expect in a small town, service needs work...and figuring out the reservation system. read more

Trying to be a New York restaurant in cowboy country. Had the shrimp and grits, which was a unique experience. Grits made with corn, but not totally ground. Added a delightful level of texture. We are here 4 times during our stay. In the gorgeous St George Hotel, the service and food were perfect endings to our days touring the area. Excellent Caesar salad, pappardelle was divine with homemade pasta, and we ordered the charcuterie every night. The ambiance is terrific, with local artists' work on the walls. Went here for a birthday celebration. We were very disappointed to find that the menu was prix fixe for the night with only 3 salads, 4 entrees and 2 desserts to choose from. Call ahead before you go to check on this if you don't want to be limited to a 3 course meal at a set price. $65 when we were there. The staff was very friendly and tried to accommodate us but, in the end we decided to dine elsewhere. We returned to Marfa the next day and enjoyed fantastic drinks and appetizers at the bar here!! read more
