Reata is a cute spot -- it's in a charming old house and has a cozy, historic feel. I ate in the bar area and loved the log cabin vibe inside. I ordered the chicken tortilla soup and the smoked quail. The soup was served with the garnishes in the bowl and the broth poured from a kettle at the table, which was a fun presentation. The quail was also well plated and tasty. Overall, I enjoyed both the food and the presentation. If you're in Alpine or passing through (like I was on the way back from Big Bend NP), this is a great place to stop and grab a meal. read more

We went in for a table for 2 around 6pm, without a reservation, and were seated immediately. We were dressed casually, but you could also dress nicer if you wanted a nice date night. Our waiter Sebastian was friendly, attentive and answered all of our questions while providing his own recommendations. It was all SO good that we're planning to go back during our stay! The old fashioned is a must and the chicken was not oily at all. Sebastian recommended getting the sauce on the side, and I would recommend as well! This summer (2025), we had the opportunity to visit Marathon and along the way discovered that the original Reata is actually in Alpine, Texas. Who knew? My wife and I were looking for a nice date night experience, and the OG Reata fit the bill perfectly. From the moment we walked through the front door, Mark greeted us at the host station and checked us in. We had reserved a high-top table in the bar. Mark walked us over, and our waitress was right behind him to take our drink order. The drinks came out with the pecan butter bread possibly the best bread I've ever had. The drinks were spot-on too. I'm an Old Fashioned guy, and Reata makes a baller Old Fashioned. As my wife and I caught up on our day, I noticed the table next to us had a bowl of gumbo. I knew gumbo wasn't on the menu, so I asked about it. Turns out, it was a staff meal that Mark had made. Well, it looked too good to pass up. Yes, a little pretentiously, I asked for some myself. Let me tell you: Mark makes a badass gumbo. I love gumbo. it's my favorite dish. I've had it all over Louisiana, I make it regularly myself, and one of my good friends is a born-and-raised Louisiana native. This gumbo? Better than any I've ever had. Hands down. My wife's chicken parm was also perfect. Just the right amount of breading, not drowning in sauce, with a little crisp. It was served over al dente angel hair pasta spot on. AVOID this place at all costs! They over cooked my MR steak TWICE! It took so long for my replacement that my companions had all finished their food. I sat with nothing while I waited. They didn't have the forethought to provide the enchiladas, beans & rice while they made another steak. The waitress Moriah quickly disappeared while I cut into the second one to see if it was cooked correctly & we never saw her again. The server blamed the cook for the first one which was cooked medium well. She even had to return to the table to ask how I wanted it. She had said no worries & they would take care of it. They took 10% off of the tab which was only $6. I had been wanting to eat here for years. Our Airbnb host said to avoid it & go to Lucia for a great meal instead. I wish that we had listened! The first steak was overly salted & I only took a couple of bites. My enchiladas didn't even have melted cheese when they brought my replacement meal. What type of service is this? We've been to this Reata a couple of times and we ordered steak and we're not disappointed. We decided to try something new and we're very disappointed in our choices. The appetizer was delicious. We got the bacon wrapped shrimp on jalapeño grits and it was really good though I always wondered why they gave you three shrimp in an order for a couple. Oh well that's another matter. Hubby tried the chicken fried steak which had way too much breading that fell off and the steak was tough. I had the sour cream chicken enchiladas that had absolutely no taste at all very dry and the cream sauce was mediocre at best if you go to Reatta order the steaks. That's why I'm giving it 3 stars. I have been visiting Alpine with a group of friends and decided to try some local food, so made a reservation at this place. The ambiance was old-fashioned (very cute), and our server has been super nice and friendly. The food, on the contrary, was a complete disappointment - spicy margaritas were just ok (not good and not bad); cilantro japalapeno soup had a good flavor but no cilantro or jalapeno was found in it, and it was not spicy at all. Carne asada was dry, overcooked and not fresh, and so was rosemary chicken dish - chicken was pan fried and a bit greasy, but at least fresh. Mashed potatoes were a couple days old and hard as a brick. Steak was overcooked, and we have returned it. Went to scope this place out for a company dinner. I found the food was terrible, especially for the prices. I noticed other tables sending food back to the kitchen. I had the crab stuffed jalapeños which were stuffed with cream cheese and undercooked on top of cold grits on a hot plate. I ordered the salmon which was also undercooked. Ambience is nice but the food was an afterthought. My server was the bartender and rarely came to my table. I don't want to get 20 guys in there and spend a fortune when there's better food and service somewhere in town. I've heard the one in Fort Worth is better. The food was bad here. It's upsetting. Our third time eating at the Alpine Reata over a few years. Always good and never disappointing. Service was very good. We sat at the bar and Marsha, the bartender, was our server. She did an excellent job and we enjoyed talking with her. The GM was actively present and we enjoyed talking with him. Food and service was excellent. I had the chicken fried chicken, mashed potatoes, with cream gravy. It was excellent. My wife had the bacon wrapped shrimp with grits. She really enjoyed it. Some reviews indicate that the Reata is overpriced. This isn't K-Bobs or Denny's. The vibe, setting, food, and service is worth the price and I would not consider it overpriced. read more

Visiting in Ft Davis, TX, went into Alpine to eat Dinner, manager or whoever it was, a man, was very rude, said they were full, a server, a young lady, said, yes, I can sit them in the back, he said No, I said we're full. First, the bartender made our drink order wrong... no big deal, but I am noting that here because of the rest of the experience. We ordered an appetizer, (Crab stuffed, bacon wrapped Jalapeños). That was $16 and came out to have only 3 very small jalapeños, with cream cheese (not crab), wrapped in bacon on a plate full of dried up grits. Plus it came out with our meal- not as an appetizer. Our entrees were both undercooked and overcooked. We also ordered a shared side of bacon wrapped asparagus, which had no flavor whatsoever. That didn't come out until AFTER we finished our meal. We only ate one of them. My husband's enchiladas looked and tasted like they had been warmed up and then sat under the heat lamp for quite some time. The carne asade was over cooked and undercooked and loaded up with a mountain of maybe one spice to make it seem like it was seasoned. The broccoli I had tasted like it was frozen from a bag and heated up. Our bill was not cheap, we knew what we were ordering. It very clear that we weren't happy with the meal and there was no offer of any accommodations. They just said they were short staffed and offered to go boxes. Perhaps this is considered a wonderful meal in Alpine, TX, but from where we live-, the worst restaurants taste better than what we had last night. This used to be where we went for special occasions. I used to love Reata in Alpine so much I bought the cook book (see past reviews). It's just too hit or miss with service and food now, mostly miss, and so I give up. Our steaks never come out cooked correctly. Trust me, if you order medium rare, you are going to get medium well to well. Today, everything was so poor we asked to talk to the manager, and the server told us there wasn't one. Our lunch orders took over 45 minutes, and I never got mine as I had to leave because my lunch break was over. It's just not worth the time or money to go to Reata anymore, especially if you are celebrating or wanting to have a nice time with out of town guests. The service and food are now more comparable to Chili's. So if you go to Reata, expect that type of experience with much higher prices. Luckily there is a nice italian restaurant for special occasions now, and another decent restaurant on the outskirts of town. read more

Overall, we enjoyed our meal. Food just took a while to come out. After talking to the table next to us who seemed to be regulars, we decided to order the wedge salad, citrus crusted chicken, and bacon wrapped crab stuffed jalapeños over grits shared between the two of us. I actually wasn't expecting the cheese but it was a pleasant surprise. The grits were also good, my mom enjoyed it when she usually doesn't love grits. The wedge salad was fresh. Pretty solid. Nothing to complain about. Citrus crusted chicken with honey mustard sauce was fresh and delicious as well. The only downside? It took almost 40 minutes to come out, we were practically full by then. We only ate half of everything and got the rest to go. My mom thought the mashed potatoes was the star of the night. Service was friendly, I suggested my mom get a beer since it was happy hour, but the waitress said the beer on tap was not included in the happy hour. She also didn't mention it was domestic beer only, but whatever. I believe the specials were $5 wine, $5 well drinks, $2.5 domestic beer before 6pm. Depending on where you're seated, the restaurant can feel cozy and intimate. The area where the bar (and a tree) was looked more lively and had beautiful lighting. Intending to eat at the Sports Bar next door, thinking this place was closed, as that's what Yelp said, we walked past the restaurant only to see patrons inside. We decided it looked more inviting and went in. Seated in the bar area we were perusing the menu and saw some good choices. Carly (?) our server was very friendly and took our order efficiently. It was my birthday and we decided to split the tortilla soup, the cheese and poblano grits and Carne Asada Topped with Reata's Cheese Enchiladas. The tortilla soup was great and we loved how it came out and they poured the broth over the contents in the bowl. It was a cool night and it warmed us up quickly. The broth was full of flavor and the chicken was tender and the cheese was gooey and wonderful. I have never really had grits before and these were not what I expected. They were great and I look forward to having them again. The peppers add a nice flavor and the cheese a smooth texture and both work great with the corn flavor of the grits. Our favorite dish of the night was Carne Asada Topped with Reata's Cheese Enchiladas. The carne asada was seasoned well and cooked a perfect medium rare. The enchalada added a great soft and salty element on top of the steak. The red enchalada sauce was dark and smoky. Even splitting we both had plates with so much food. Highly recommend but make reservations! They only have 13 tables and they fill up quickly. It's worth the time and planning to eat all of the wonderful food here. Let's start by saying they took the tenderloin tamales off the menu. This was the main reason we came here tonight so it was really disappointing not being able to enjoy them. The service was phenomenal even though they were working with only two waitresses, no bartenders and no host. The food we ordered, chicken enchiladas and carne asada with cheese enchiladas was very good even though it came out room temp. This was a completely different experience from our previous stops. I will say the carne asada was cooked well, pretty tender. The enchilada sauce was a bit sweet so it wasn't what I was expecting at all. Beans and rice were okay. Husband had the steak which came with potatoes and broccoli. Steak was a pretty thin ribeye so almost overcooked when ordered medium rare, for the price I wouldn't say it's the best option. I also had my eye on the bread pudding tamales with dulce de leche ice cream. Everything was overpowered by the caramel drizzle over the top. Id have to say the best part was the pecan rolls they brought out before our meal. Very good. Could even see them being eaten as a dessert with a cup of coffee. On our way to 10-Bit Ranch we stopped at Alpine to buy a few groceries and came across Reata. We were surprised people were waiting on the cute western porch for the doors to open at 5 pm. Unusual early dinner for us as we are not sure what is waiting for us 68 miles from here, expecting off-the-grid true experience. Order my usual old fashion, it was above average, pretty good. My husband decided to have a "light" dinner. Ordered the creamy crawfish, tenderloin tamales, small Caesar salad - all from the appetizers' list. Well, no light affair at all, portion were big, and the tamales was a full plate with 3 full size tamales. He enjoyed his food "I was happy"' he expressed. I had the dinner Avocado Caesar with tenderloin strips. Excellent, the tenderloin was cooked just right and melted in my mouth.
