My husband and I stayed in Alpine, TX on our way to Big Bend. During our stay, we stopped in at Spicewood Restaurant and it did not disappoint! First off- the vibes/ ambience as the sun sets is unreal! I loved the views from the restaurant and really gave the Texas vibes we were looking for. Service was pleasant and timely which is always appreciated. I got a glass of wine and my husband got a beer. Food wise, I got the steak bites and absolutely loved them! So good. My husband got the Spicewood Philly and some wings. He enjoyed his food, as well. If you're in the area, I'd definitely suggest you stop by for a meal! read more

Good spot for dinner in Alpine, very busy! Waited about 15 minutes for a table at peak dinner hour on a Saturday. Space is large and the tables are pretty spaced out, probably could put more tables. I had the poblano chicken ($25) and the chicken was cooked nicely, not tough at all and very juicy. It is a little pricey but the food is well executed. Plenty of parking. read more

I had this place as 5 star when they were lunch/dinner. They have transitioned to breakfast/lunch and we tried their breakfast today. When we arrived we noticed that the parking lot was almost empty. This place was always packed for dinner. That should have been a clue. The restaurant is still very nice. No complaints there. The prices are significantly higher than expected for not a great menu. It is significantly higher than other Alpine restaurants. This would have been acceptable if the food/service were better. The food was not good. We had pancakes, French toast, and an omelette. None of it was good. Somehow, the pancakes were crunchy. Not the edges have a bit of texture, the entire pancake had a crust that was dry and flavorless. Among the worst pancakes I've ever been served. The French toast was also pretty flavorless. These meals came with nothing but the French toast and pancakes. My wife did enjoy her omelette. The coffee was good but was empty most of our meal. There was one waitress for the entire dining area and only one pot of coffee. It didn't go far and she was running. With tip, breakfast was $70...way too much for any breakfast and insultingly high for such a bad breakfast. I'd recommend scoops or magoo's for breakfast in Alpine. It is half as expensive and way better. We might try it again in a couple of months to see if it improves. I wouldn't be surprised if they close before we come back. read more

Front sign said See Bartender. So I walked up to the bar 4 min later she spoke to me. Said only seats she had were in the bar and at high tables. My mother used a walker and obviously can't get in a high table. The place was empty but she couldn't seat is right outside the bar. We were able to eat here twice during our stay in Alpine this past weekend. First night was really good. Christopher was an awesome host. Sharon K was an awesome server! Food was really good. Second night was off. Host (didn't get his name) could not have cared less that we wanted to spend money there. He saw us waiting and stopped before he helped us to straighten his menus. Took his time about it too. It was very "I could care less". Then he looked over a pad he was carrying. Then finally asked us if we were wanting a table. There were a few tables that needed cleaned and he told us it would be 20 minutes or we could sit in the bar. We chose the bar. Sam W was our server and he was hustling and really on top of things. Food was disappointing as I had high expectations from the previous evening but my squash and mashed potato sides were cold. Not room temp, but cold. It was late, my legs don't like tall chairs and my chicken fried tenderloin was good so I didn't mention it. But it was such a night and day difference from Fri to Sat night. Beautiful setting, very nice layout. Food was ok. service bad at best. Hospitality made me wonder if they forgot they seated us or even cared we were there. I have severe PTSD and loud banging noises really sets me off like a rifle shot.. A young lady was slamming something on the table next to us and I asked the waitress to please explain to here I have severe reactions to loud bangs like gun fire I have severe PTSD. She went and got another waitress and that one said I could move. I explained we were in the sun and they had the doors open. They walked off....... And did nothing..... Very poor way to treat a customer and a combat vet with PTSD..... I am a veteran of over 22 years and 9 years in combat zones as a grunt. read more

Don't go to Spicewoo. The food is crap these days. We were seated for over 10 minutes before our waitress came to our table. We then waited for 20 minutes after ordering simple sandwiches yesterday. When we asked about our food the waitress said it would be 5-10 minutes more. Not only did I not want to wait 40 minutes to get a Ruben, but the waitress had a total crap attitude towards us, which was the final straw. I spoke to the supervisor and left. The food here is.... ok. I've had many things at Spicewood over the past year, and you can usually make the item better at home. Recent visit we had the vegetable noodles in a pesto sauce. It was like having a bowl of creamy soup. Friend had the blackened white fish which was literally what you can make at home if you smother the fish with blackened seasoning. The nachos I've had are your typical house nachos. Try for yourself and see. We will be back because the bartenders are nice and there is not a lot in Alpine. We ordered takeout, and to begin with, my call was placed on hold for about ten minutes before I could order. Ordered a hamburger and the chicken fried tenderloin. The tenderloin was okay but the hamburger was rare/ bloody in the middle and we had to finish cooking it in a microwave in our hotel room. They gave us an order of fries we didn't order and charged us for it. No ketchup was provided for the burger, no napkins or cutlery. Food is overpriced. So all in all. A bad experience. Although it's a large dining area, it was 2/3 full on a Thursday night. There were about ten people waiting to be seated and no hostess in sight when I entered. My guess is they are understaffed. This restaurant is over-rated! They have a good variety of choices, but don't do well with the basics! The Waiter was a new hire - which he explained ..... but he took forever to get us cocktails (2 bottles of beer) ... there were only 2 in the party. We each ordered the 10oz ribeye (one medium and one medium rare) ..... with baked potatoes and veggies. After considerable wait for drinks, the entrees arrived ever so quickly! However, the steaks were shockingly awful. First of all, a $37 steak should NOT look like the steak you get at a fast food restaurant like Denny's or the Waffle House. It was sliced thin and had no flavor. Neither of the steaks arrived hot- both were under cooked (butter on steaks did not melt) - both steaks were rare and NOT tender - both steaks had no flavor / no seasoning- - (bland) - steaks were over-priced at $37 and totally unimpressive! What a waste of money! .... Also, the baked potatoes were mildly warm (butter and sour cream never melted). Brussels sprouts were highly recommended by waiter- however- they arrived over cooked- dried out- tough to chew- and were also cold! Obviously the owner / manager is not checking the plates as they leave the kitchen.....both plates were a total disaster And should not have been served! The manager offered to 'replate' the food or provide a free desert. ( we assumed he meant throw it in the microwave ) .... We opted for the desert...and tried to end the disappointing night asap. read more

We came to the Spicewood as part of a familiarization tour for outdoor writers. So having grown up in Florida and now living in Eugene, close enough to the coast up in salmon country, I wasn't sure what I might get when I ordered fish. I lived for fifty years in landlocked Colorado and for a long time it was hard to adjust to fish that just wasn't quite done right, all too often left to cook too long and ending up as shoe leather. So here we were in Texas, miles of desert all around us, but I took a chance. on the salmon. Ian, our waiter, took excellent, patient care of us. Having lived in Alaska, Ian knows something about salmon. No idea how much sway he has in the kitchen but what came out was perfect: perfectly cooked, not overdone, not overly-spiced and a perfect lunch to precede a hike in Big Bend. It's always such a joy to find a place which feels out in the middle of nowhere- a feeling that can hit you hard and frequently in the vast expanse that is Texas- and be treated to excellent food from an ocean very far away. Kudos to Spicewood for having staff that knows that fish and steak continue to cook once removed from the heat source. That may sound obvious, and it most assuredly is, but too many kitchens don't understand it. Spicewood was a joy. I'm not a big foodie, but I most assuredly love to acknowledge good food well-cooked and nicely presented. Many thanks to the staff at Visit Big Bend for making sure that our lunch was very special. Don't bother! I can't comment on the food because we left before we even looked at a menu. Staff was extremely rude and condescending! They shuffled us from one area to the next and when we ordered an appetizer, we were (basically) asked to bus our table ourselves, bringing dirty dishes to staff! Fabulous! Food, service and ambiance! What a great hidden gem! We had the beef tenderloin with mashed potatoes and carrots. Along with Caesar salad with grilled shrimp. Delicious! We all ate every bite! Portions are good size but we had room to split a hot bread pudding sizzling in skillet with ice cream and dark cherries w/chocolate. Highly recommend a meal while in Alpine. Oh my gosh foodies! I've driven by this nondescript restaurant a lot of times, always on my way to somewhere, but had the pleasure of stopping today. I am SO GLAD! We were seated in the back area overlooking the great western desert skies. Our server, Ian, was excellent. Cold beers, voice menu selections, and killer food. I got the French Dip which was the best I've ever had. Hubs had the Chicken wings with honey siracha, and loved them. They were smoked and sticky/hot sweet. The menu is robust, the view is enjoyable and the ambiance is comfortable ranch. I made that up. Lol. It's terrific. Be sure to stop by. I'm sure you'll be happy you did. read more

Okay, I was in Alpine looking for different places to eat when I stumbled across this restaurant. I read through the reviews and everything seemed great, mainly talking about the service. The service was great. The food on the other hand. The food was great in the moment if you didn't eat before. Now I say moment, because the next day had me crying. As in I couldn't sleep. Not only was I sitting on the toilet for more than an hour, but as I continued my drive to Marathon, I literally had to pull over to sh!t on the side of the road! The salmon my girlfriend ordered was very undercooked in the middle, which also had her in the bathroom for a long while. Other than that, the ambiance and the service are A1, the food, eh. Spicewood Restaurant presented beautifully with a very nice relaxing atmosphere. The outdoor patio was gorgeous with spectacular views and nice seating area. All was great until I ordered the steak bites WELL DONE and they were served RARE (raw in my opinion). I honestly did not want to complain because we were on a first time trip with close family members. Later I kindly informed the waitress of how the steak was cooked and suggested that she let the cook know so he/she does not cook well done steak rare for future guests. She told me she would inform the manager. She then returned with a less than professional snarky attitude and told us she hoped our day got better. It was really too bad the cook was inexperienced or didn't care to cook our meal like we wanted and the waitress ended up being rude. Otherwise it is a nice place. Take your chances. read more

So a coworker and i was working in Alpine for a couple of days and had just arrived. We asked a local what restaurant they recommended for a late lunch.. right off the bat they said you have to try the Spicewood at the edge of town, well, luck for us, it was right across the street from the hotel we were staying at so we grabbed a late lunch/early dinner. I ordered the Chorizo Shrimp and Grits which was the special for the day... DAMN!! It was delicious... the shrimp had a little heat to them and not overly cooked and they set upon a bed of grits.. I have never had grits this way and I am now a big fan of how they were served... I am not sure their receipt but it is a must try if its on the menu. Then next day we decided to try it out again for a late lunch... this night they had the Salmon Poke as there special... YUP, I am definitely a fan!!! Hats off to the chef for cooking up these daily specials... you cannot go wrong with the daily special. I want to also point out the all the staff and the bartenders were very welcoming. They were always quick with your drinks and delivered with a smile. If you're in the Alpine area and you're looking for a nice atmosphere to enjoy a meal and maybe a drink or two, ya need to try out Spicewood... oh... and their deserts.... We decided to try this restaurant based on the reviews. I hope this review helps someone else decide. Where to start? The food is divine! Even the water was so tasty. Seriously. We ordered the nachos as a starter because they were very busy. I'm not sure what type of cheese they use but it was creamy and delicious. Great flavor & the chips were perfect, not too thick or thin. Dinner was served and did not disappoint! My husband had the Rib Eye and enjoyed every bite, also loved the loaded baked potato and roasted garlic. His steak was so tender he could cut it with a butter knife. I chose the chopped sirloin, and added the sauced onions, mushrooms and cheese. Along with the mashed potatoes it was heaven on a plate. If you're looking for some tasty comfort food without bread or pasta, I highly recommend this. I would be remiss if I didn't mention the wait staff. The restaurant was hopping and so were all of the staff and servers. Kind, helpful and attentive. They really helped make a great dinner perfect.
