Every time my wife and I visit Alpine we try our best to eat at La Casita. Great food and service,

First -- and I rarely comment on other reviews -- there is nothing "weird" about the food here. Further, yes... This is a cash-only business. That's a rarity these days, and I'm sure the IRS and local school district are getting all that's due to them. (Not really.) I'm an out-of-towner, and I stopped here for lunch before heading back south. The food and service were good. Not great. Indeed everyone was friendly, and there was enough gooey cheese to float a battleship. The "frozen" beer mug was actually a plastic mug, which is horse hockey. If I'd known better, I would've saved the dishwasher some trouble and just sipped from the bottle. Back to the food... The cheese enchiladas here are divine. They're gooey, and the red sauce is wonderful. The hard corn tacos are fine ... nothing special. Same thing with the rice and beans. -- Mexican rice in these parts has been wet at every restaurant. I'm used to dry Mexican rice. (And I was taught by a Mexican abuela how to make proper Mexican rice.) But I digress. Chips here are marginal. Hopefully, they come in on a truck, because they hardly taste like they are fried in the kitchen. The salsa, while served cold (which is proper) is a little too chunky for my taste, although it has a nice bite to it. The locals eat here. Good for them, because this place is decent. But also bad for them, because restaurants like this one should breed some decent competition ... even in a tiny town such as Alpine. Also, bad for them because this place only accepts cash, which most people don't carry these days. (Yes, we had cash, but the six ladies at the adjacent table didn't.) read more

I arrived on a Wednesday evening at 7:50 and was told they're closed. The neon sign says Open and the schedule says they're open until 8:00. I give up on this place. read more

Very disappointing. My wife says we have eaten there before, but I dont remember. Service was OK. Wife had green chile chicken enchilada which was not very flavorful. The chicken had no flavor at all and the dish was very soupy. The server said "that's the way they serve it". That's fine, but wife couldnt eat it. The plate was barely eaten and the server offered no recourse. It was wasted. Then the cashier came over, whom I believe to be ownership, and told us we could come to the counter to check out. We showed her the uneaten plate and she just looked at us and said she would charge only 50%. Since it was barely touched, I feel it should have been totally removed from the bill, but what is $7.00 among friends. She really acted as she didnt care. Chips were store bought and cold. Salsa was very good, but was cold as if it had come straight from the refrigerator. I had a bowl of beans and they were "weird". We paid and left. Needless to say, we will not be back. I suppose it's the manner in which the whole situation was handled and the demeanor of the staff. read more

Sometimes some of the best food comes from what are seemingly the most unlikely of places. This place came recommended to us by a local and it was full of locals. The restaurant itself is in in what used to be the home of a family member of the current restaurantuers here. Upon entering it is like you are walking into the locals dining room. Everyone knows each other and everyone is visiting across the tables. They are sharing Easter plans with each other and talking about family. The house/restaurant is an authentic throwback to the 1970s, wood paneling and all. The food was absolutely excellent. I had one the the best cheese quesadillas I have ever had and certainly one of the best I have ever had. The staff here was very personable and nice. When they asked how your food was, they were not being obligatory, they meant it and wanted to have an opportunity to fix anything that was wrong or you didn't like. Just down home folks making sure they were making people happy. Great experience! read more

We were expecting to eat a grocery store meal since this town is so small, but this place really delivered! (We actually ate here twice!) The sign on its front door said it's been around for 47 years which just goes to show how good it is. Everything we ordered was delicious and had a little extra - flautas for the kids (which came with guac to dip in), enchiladas with a tasty green sauce I don't usually see with enchiladas, and a burrito with beef stew as the filling. The one sad thing is that if you do take out, they won't give you the chips, salsa, guac, and queso that come complimentary for dine in guests. This place is like a hidden gem. Me and the wife both got the fajita plate. So much food, and it was seasoned just right.

We were visiting Alpine for a few days and were in desperate need of a drink and a good meal....needless to say we only accomplished the drinks portion of our needs. A few things to note before we get started with this review: 1. It's cash only - so be prepared (this is as of my post) 2. The staff was polite and this is in no way a reflection of them. The good: The beer was nice and cold but they only give you one frozen mug, even if you order more beer. The cheese enchiladas were good The enchilada sauce was flavorful and brought the Mexican plate together. The bad: -Don't except to get real guacamole - instead you'll get a guac-like concoction that consist of sour cream, avocado and cilantro. It was not good. -Don't order the flauta plate. Save yourself the $15 and go buy a box from Walmart, it's the same difference. The flautas are literally the ones from a box. -Rice and beans are a staple of any good Tex-Mex dish but I'm sad to report the rice that was served on all three plates was undercooked and mushy and the beans were missing essential spices. Our overall meal was over $70!!! Three plates, 4 beers and a tea....thats a bit insane for the lackluster food. Anyway. That's all I have. Hours posted online say they are open until 8:00, I called to verify and they said they close at 7:45, we arrived at 7:30. The server was visibly pissed off that we walked in the door, saying that since they were dead they were already closing up. Incredibly rude to treat a party of 2 as a nuisance for wanting to have dinner at their restaurant! So we left and went to Amigo's where we received very friendly customer service. read more

I like places only locals visit and was introduced to this place by a friend. The food has consistently been fast, fresh, and good. I ate so much Mexican food living in Alpine, TX I have yet to visit one down in Austin. I think La Casita has spoiled me.:) It may look a little rundown to some people, but to those who live there, it's well-loved. This was our first trip to Alpine, Texas. Upon arriving to La Casita for dinner after a long day of driving, we parked and went inside. There were no signs or host stand in sight, but only a counter to pay, at the back of the restaurant. We spoke to the lady at the counter and asked if we are to seat ourselves, or do we wait in line. She asked us if there was anyone waiting on the front patio for a table. Which first off, that isn't our job to monitor your waitlist. But we said we noticed a family of 4-5 but we weren't sure. There was one small booth and a big table that needed to be cleaned off. We suggested that we could take the small booth and leave the big table for the family that had been waiting. The lady at the counter agreed. So we go sit down. Another women was our server. She walked up to the table aggressively, and accused us of skipping the line. We attempted to tell her that we had already spoken to her coworker at the back counter. HOWEVER, before I could get the sentence out I was cut off and talked too extremely rudely. THEN, the other family was sat, and their drink order was taken, then brought out. THEN had chips and salsa refilled, THEN their food order was taken. By that time it had been 15 mins since we sat down, and we decided to leave. Eat elsewhere, we went to a food truck called Santana's and it was soooo good. Mexican street food! read more

I'm from the part of Texas where we cook TEX MEX. Here in Alpine, Mexico, the dessert SW in general the Mexican food is not good. Some say it's "traditional". If that means it needs salt, lacks flavor and imagination then they got it down. I had enchiladas and tacos. Enchiladas sauce was can I believe, tacos I liked a lot. Chips not so good, cold. Salsa had a lot of salt in it. Lol sorry LC, you're not the only place that taste just like this in the SW. maybe that's how y'all do it down here. Not for me. Nice people, fast service. read more

Stopped in for a quick lunch. I think there was only one waitress on duty but she was hustling so we hardly waited at all. We ordered Chile Verde from the House Specialties and it was pretty good! I would say this restaurant is a little different than your typical Tex-mex but still delicious. We also ordered a bowl of queso and I think it had queso fresco in it, which is very different than what I expected, but it was absolutely amazing! It was seat yourself and we were lucky to grab the last available table. We hardly waited at all before the waitress came with chips and salsa and menus. She took our drink order and came back pretty promptly to get our food order. This is a small, authentic little restaurant that I would absolutely return to! read more

Been coming here when I'm in town for over 20 years. Never disappoints. Hearty tasty food. For Covid people can eat inside or you can get it to go and sit on the picnic tables on the front porch. The kind waitresses helped us get our food outside and even checked on us to see if we needed more drinks. On a busy Saturday! Can't wait to go back again in a few months! The restaurant is off the beaten path and I find that those kinds of restaurants are the most delicious. The food was absolutely incredible, some of the best Mexican (Tex-Mex) food I've had in a long time. The refried beans in particular were super delicious. The waitresses were a little standoffish and not all beverage options were available, but the food was THAT good that I cannot NOT rate this restaurant 5 stars. Be ready, though, because they were super busy and the restaurant is quite small. So, you might be waiting up to 20 minutes or so, but it's definitely worth it. read more

Out of the way - hard to find dive - my kind of place. Help was outstanding, & if judged on that alone, would make this place a 5 star. I ordered the bean and cheese nachos (goes by a different name here) to split with my daughter. She ordered cheese enchiladas to split with me. My wife ordered an order of beef quesadillas. I was sorry I had offered to split my nachos with my daughter because they were so good. I can't say the same thing about the cheese enchiladas. They weren't bad, they were just boring (lacked flavor). My wife enjoyed her quesadillas. The food was good enough that somebody in our group wanted to go back the next day. Wish we had. As mentioned in other tips or reviews, they do not take credit cards. They also gave a couple of signs up saying the same thing. Glad I had a little cash on me. read more

Good Tex Mex food. Big portions. Very reasonable prices IMO. Try the half order of deluxe campechanas. Or a smothered combination burrito with grilled onion and jalapeños. The only take cash, no credit cards or checks. Get there early before they get crowded. read more

If you came to Alpine and didn't eat at La Casita, why did you even come to Alpine??? Make sure to take CASH because they do not do cards. Food is delish and abundant. It's a very low key kinda place and they make you feel at home. Prices are very fair. read more

On a road trip with a stop in Alpine, TX. Had a great lunch at this hidden gem that only the locals seem to know about. It is called La Casita because it is located inside a former home. Reminiscent of the famous Ninfa's on Navigation in Houston, Texas. So glad I found it. You must order the 3 tacos. They are NOT your usual "Taco Bell" crispy tacos!! Order the beef, soft tacos with red sauce and you will have the taste delight of the day! The red sauce will surprise you; it is not fiery hot nor sweet but a wonderful flavor topped with melted cheddar and queso blanco. Inside each taco is a boatload of nicely seasoned beef, crispy lettuce and tomatoes. It comes with a side of Mexican style rice and frijoles. I waddled out and was in need of a siesta in a cool hotel room. I highly recommend La Casita!! read more

Good food! Loved corn tortillas and their rice and beans. Not the best but not the worst I've had. I would have given them more stars but couldn't because of 3 things. Granted they were very busy and probably exhausted....but the waitress was snarky and service was lacking. Second, what no margaritas? Beer and wine coolers only. So, I order a margarita wine cooler. Didn't have that either. Waitress said,, "oh, we don't always have what's on the menu?" Ok... Last, online and on the lit up sign outside it said they closed at 8:30. We left just enough time when finished eating at 7:55 to order sopapillas. We're from NJ and have to get sopapillas when we travel southwest. When we ordered them, she snarkily said, "We're closed...no more." I said something about everything that was advertised said they were open 'til 8:30...even the sign right outside their door. She ignored me. Not a big deal, but, we could have done without the attitude. read more

La Casita proclaims that it has been in business in Alpine for 41 years. The restaurant is located in a residential area of town and is clean and unassuming. The food is great--inexpensive and flavorful. We had a chili verde plate and a taco salad, washed down with unsweetened ice tea and Lone Star beer, accompanied by a frosty cold mug. The restaurant was doing a booming business during the lunch hour on Friday and every table and booth was filled with a lot of locals and a few out of towners like us.
