So....you're out in the middle of nowhere and got a hankering for Tex-Mex?? BOOM! You found it. Plus try a Michelada...Great Stuff! Come check out this classy lil Mexican restaurant, they have indoor and outdoor dining. I had the Carne Guisada which would serve more like carne asada smothered with jalapeños & onions, but no complaints. It was a Solid Plate. It just wasn't the gravy version that I'm accustomed to. My friend got the Joel plate which is kind of like a sampler plate of everything the restaurant serves. For a moment I saw a full plate and then the next he was wiping it clean. So I guess that meant it was pretty damn good! Great service. Very friendly and helpful. Definitely looking forward to coming back!

My step father told me to go check this place out. He told me they had the best chicken fried steak he's ever had and you didn't even need a knife. Just a little house turned into a restaurant. Cute patio. Service was ok, my son ordered a chicken quesadilla and he enjoyed it. I ordered the chicken fried steak and it was a massive piece, you definitely couldn't cut it with just a fork now so maybe they changed things up a bit? Chips and salsa were brought out to the table and they were just meh. The salsa was just like a picante sauce, not my favorite kind of salsa.

Did a pit stop before we head to big bend. Everything was delicious. You just have to be patient on the service since it seems like it is one person. We would come back for the food for sure.

This is a cute little established restaurant in the town of Balmorhea. We have eaten here several times over the past 10-15 years. However, this past Monday when I went with my hubby the food was great! The chips were fresh and hot and the homemade salsa was VERY HOT, just the way we like it! My nachos were loaded abs very tasty and my husband enjoyed his plate as well. No fountain drinks though, just canned soft drinks. We hope to return next year with the rest of the family

Service is always great, good ambiance, and the food is always amazing!! Today, I had the Tacos a la Parilla, and they NEVER disappoint! We always make it a point to stop by on the way to and from Fort Davis. My wife likes to try different items on the menu, but I always stick to the usual Tacos a la Parrila!

A small restaurant in a small town - my friends and I decided to stop by during our road trip given we couldn't really find anywhere else. We were a bit hesitant because of the mixed reviews but ultimately decided to give it a try. Our service experience was very positive. It was a bit confusing in getting seated at first, but after sitting down, our drinks came out quickly as did the chips & salsa. Our food took roughly 15 minutes to come out after we placed orders, so service was quite timely. Our server was also very nice and checked on us a just right amount of times - we got refills on water and chips in a timely manner. The food was excellent! Tasted very authentic and delicious. I ordered the beef on stacked enchiladas and the cheese was very smooth. The portion size was great, and the beans & rice were traditional and mixed well with the enchiladas. The chips here also stood out to me - they were very crisp and crunchy. Overall, we were very pleasantly surprised by our lunch experience; the people here are very polite and friendly, and we'd gladly come back if we're ever in the area again! PROS: - tasty Mexican cuisine, sizable menu with many selections - homey and comfortable interior - quick and timely service, good amount of check-ins throughout meal - polite and friendly staff - free chips & salsa (crisp chips) CONS: - getting seated was a bit confusing at first - nothing else!

We were unfamiliar with the area and saw this sign that read, cutest little restaurant in town. So we decided to try it and we're immediately enchanted by the cute courtyard dining. My daughter got the taco salad and it was small but enough for her and she said it was delicious, the taco meat was flavored.

Very good food in an eclectic setting. I recommend the steak fajitas and my wife recommends the Florinda's family favorite.

Place closes at 8pm not 9pm. The staff said the owner is "technically challenged" and does not know how to update the closing times.

First -- and I rarely comment on other reviews -- there is nothing "weird" about the food here…read more Further, yes... This is a cash-only business. That's a rarity these days, and I'm sure the IRS and local school district are getting all that's due to them. (Not really.) I'm an out-of-towner, and I stopped here for lunch before heading back south. The food and service were good. Not great. Indeed everyone was friendly, and there was enough gooey cheese to float a battleship. The "frozen" beer mug was actually a plastic mug, which is horse hockey. If I'd known better, I would've saved the dishwasher some trouble and just sipped from the bottle. Back to the food... The cheese enchiladas here are divine. They're gooey, and the red sauce is wonderful. The hard corn tacos are fine ... nothing special. Same thing with the rice and beans. -- Mexican rice in these parts has been wet at every restaurant. I'm used to dry Mexican rice. (And I was taught by a Mexican abuela how to make proper Mexican rice.) But I digress. Chips here are marginal. Hopefully, they come in on a truck, because they hardly taste like they are fried in the kitchen. The salsa, while served cold (which is proper) is a little too chunky for my taste, although it has a nice bite to it. The locals eat here. Good for them, because this place is decent. But also bad for them, because restaurants like this one should breed some decent competition ... even in a tiny town such as Alpine. Also, bad for them because this place only accepts cash, which most people don't carry these days. (Yes, we had cash, but the six ladies at the adjacent table didn't.)

The chicken had no flavor at all and the dish was very soupy. The server said "that's the way they serve it". That's fine, but wife couldnt eat it. The plate was barely eaten and the server offered no recourse. It was wasted. Then the cashier came over, whom I believe to be ownership, and told us we could come to the counter to check out. We showed her the uneaten plate and she just looked at us and said she would charge only 50%. Since it was barely touched, I feel it should have been totally removed from the bill, but what is $7.00 among friends. She really acted as she didnt care. Chips were store bought and cold. Salsa was very good, but was cold as if it had come straight from the refrigerator. I had a bowl of beans and they were "weird". We paid and left. Needless to say, we will not be back. I suppose it's the manner in which the whole situation was handled and the demeanor of the staff.

What a great place for tamales!…read more The outside of the building looks like a strange place to have such a wonderful restaurant. But inside it's clean, smells delicious, and has very friendly staff. The tamales and bowls were delicious! This is a hidden gem that is worth the stop or drive.

17 years ago on our road trip and not much around, we happened upon La Nortena Tamale Factory in…read morethe blink of an eye and you've passed it town of Pecos Texas. Fast forward to Instagram, Yelp, social influencers and now this tamale factory and city are even more well known and loved. So with another road trip from Las Vegas to San Antonio we had to stop here and get some tamales. I have a few tips for you. They are closed on Mondays and if I'm not mistaken most days they are closed by 2 or 3 PM. Their website to pre-order is great. I ordered the night before to make sure my tamales were available. We were staying in Carlsbad, New Mexico and the drive time is an hour and 30 minutes. I totally forgot about the time change switching states. I called La Nortena as I started my drive and requested they changed my pick up time for an hour later than I had originally requested. They were so accommodating and helpful. I love that they open super early because we were on the road and there by 10am Texas time. We decided to walk in to pick up our order. They have an order line and a pick up line but there was only one girl manning the order line. It went pretty quick and they got our stuff really fast. They do not offer any bathrooms as this is just a pick up and go so if you're traveling you'll have to find somewhere else. The tamales were as delicious as I remembered them. The masa isn't super thin and isn't super thick. This isn't your regular masa. You can literally see the love that went into them making this masa special. I pre-ordered the mix dozen which comes with half green and half red. If you prefer more or less or another type of tamale they offer (others aren't always available) then just place the request in the comments box of your order. Both red and green are a bit spicy, moist and have awesome flavor. This was our breakfast and they were piping hot. I could barely hold them to hand them to my son in the backseat. I love that they were so hot. Delicious and my son said that they were the best tamales he had ever eaten. Pecos Texas is not that blink and you pass it kind of town anymore. It's rather cute with artistically painted Texas boots all throughout the city. I love social media because it really shows you all the things that you can find in the city from it having the world's first rodeo to history with Pecos Bill, this is definitely a stop to make and enjoy the city as well as the incredible tamales.
