We really enjoyed this place- so much so, that we ordered a pint of salsa to go! The service was great- food was quick, and it made be some of the best sweet tea I've ever had ever. I got the relleno- I wish I had asked if it had meat in it (it was just cheese) but it was FABULOUS. The enchiladas and chips were also excellent, and my hubby (who is not easy to please) LOVED his double meat cheeseburger basket. The Alcove up in Alpine should learn how to make burgers like this!! We sat outside on the patio- perfect weather. I do wish people would stop taking their dogs to eating places..... not everyone enjoys dog noises and dog dirt and dog hair while they eat. From speaking to the owner we learned that the food here is not home cooked style food and that they make many of their dishes with mass produced mixes and the like. We tried one snack to share since we were already here and hungry which was mediocre. The cherry on top was when they tried to charge us for two orders instead of one we got. My general rating system: 1 star: I would stay away 2 stars: Has some good things about it but I generally don't recommend. 3 stars: Pretty good. When looking for Mexican food after our arrival in Marfa, Marfa Burrito came up but it's closed for dinner... Angel's is close by and we decided to try it out Yes, we can get great Mexican dishes in California but Tex-Mex is a different beast altogether. Definitely the sauces have more of a punch which is highly appreciated by the two of us. Combo plate and beef / chicken botanas are very different from what we're used to. Mannn, the sauce is awesome and combining the red and green pepper ones makes for tons of flavor. As dessert we had a half order of sopapillas that were sumptuous and delicious..... 9/10 on the food. Service wise, nice staff - it's a simple setup and it worked out fine at the end. We celebrated the end of a 2-1/2 day drive from Chicago with a solid meal at this cozy, simple restaurant. My wife had a fajita salad which she enjoyed. Had a poor at Angel's last night, even though we were excited to eat there. The service was very slow and inattentive, and the food came out very late. When it arrived, the food left a lot to be desired. I love mexican food and have eaten it my entire life in texas -- so I was surprised at the quality given the high ratings. The fajita beef was totally dry and the rice was significantly over salted. The enchiladas were the best part, but even they weren't better than Rosa's Tortilla Factory. Place was alright. Last resort because we were driving by and all the other restaurants were either closed, or had an hour wait time. Place could definitely use some improvement. Food sucked. I don't mean to sound like a Karen but it just did. I ordered the meat nachos.... I honestly thought it would be queso with tortilla chips and some sort of beef fajitas. Nope. It was just tortilla chips with microwaved shredded cheese on top. The meat was just ground beef. Literally re-downloaded yelp to do this review. We stopped by Angels, because it was one of three local places open. At first glance we thought it was a walk up window restaurant. But after walking in through the blue door. There are 7 tables to dine at. You seat yourself and pay at the hostess stand like a lot of local restaurants. After going to the Chinati museum, we stopped by here to grab some food before heading on the rest of our trip. Here is a breakdown of service and food. Salsa {5/5} has a fresh cilantro taste with just enough spice to make you grab more chips. First basket is included in meal, each basket after is $1.00. Hubby ordered: chicken fajita salad 4/5 this is not your typical salad. Don't think salad bowl and think more like nachos with extra lettuce. That being said. We were not mad about it. The chicken was really well marinated, tomatoes and bell peppers were fresh, and with a side of guacamole was a great meal. Only reason why we didn't give it 5 stars is because it wasn't what we define as a salad. (It was better then a salad tbh) My order: Chicken Botanas 5/5 I've never had Botanas before. Well I have, but we called them lazy nachos when I was younger and we would heat them up in the microwave. Angels Botanas were so much better. Let me layout the first bite. This is definitely a locals place. The Mexican food was authentic, chips were thick and OK but their salsa was fantastic. I had the enchilada, taco, and chile relleños plate and my wife had beef fajitas. Both plates were excellent. The gentleman at the table next to us ordered the best looking, fattest juicy hamburger that I've seen in several years. It served with big fries. It looked so good that we going back to Angels just to try one. In speaking to the proprietor, she said that their burgers are so good because that's what her husband likes to cook the most. Probably an excellent recommendation. When you show up, expect a locals dive because it's a very small and meager establishment. Service was by the proprietor only. We walked in on a chilly March morning, and the place was filled with locals (a good sign). Angel was very prompt in seating us and taking our order (thanks for moving a heater over to our table!), and I believe her husband was behind the grill. You can fell the love they pour into the place. I am a bit of an expert in breakfast burritos, and their version was EXCELLENT. The salsa was top shelf as well. Our waitress yesterday was the real angel. It's a cramped and busy space and she took care of everyone like a pro. Also had some of the best complimentary salsa I've ever had - it was smooth, almost creamy, rather than watery. The chips were how I like them too. Magical machaca in Marfa! Passing through Marfa Texas on our way to Carlsbad Caverns, we stopped for breakfast at Angel's. We had a brisket machaca burrito and a machaca plate. The food was delicious and the service was excellent. The traditional chips and salsa were also very good. The salsa was so good we had to take some on the road with us. My husband & I were both so disappointed with the food. I'm from West Texas and know all about good Mexican Food. I generally believe that you can always tell a good Mexican place by 3 things: 1) Rice; 2) Beans; 3) Chips & Salsa. Unfortunately, all 3 were mediocre at best! The chips were totally stale. The salsa was overpowered by black pepper. The rice had no flavor at all. The beans were OK. I ordered the Chile Relleno and it was the deepest-fried one I've ever had in my life. My husband ordered the chicken fried steak and it was also so deep fried that it looked black! Either they were both fried for waayyyy too long or the grease was old. We visited for dinner while passing through after a trip to big bend. They were very busy (Texas spring break week), but the staff and Angel herself continued to smile and be kind to guests. The queso compuesto was delicious and the salsa was 10/10! We sat on the patio- the weather was perfect and we caught a glimpse of the sunset. There was a family with young kids seated near us. They seemed oblivious to the fact that the restaurant was extremely busy (and has only been open 2 months, so probably busiest they have been given high volume of travelers and not much open on a Wednesday night in Marfa). At one point, the mom commented on how long it was taking and one child (maybe 6yo) said loudly "we should leave a bad review"! Apparently a pattern for this family. When walking in, be careful because you step down, and I didn't realize it and almost fell into a group of border control agents sitting at the first table. It's popular despite being new, so come early to find a table. Reasonable prices, tasty Mexican food, and replaced another popular Mexican place that has moved to a food truck. If you're not from here, you may not realize it's a restaurant because they haven't got their sign up yet, relying on word of mouth. It's directly across the street from the Dollar General.
