We ate at the hotel restaurant because it was convenient. We were going to take our food up to eat in the room, but a table was quickly cleared for us. We decided to get the wood-fried oven pizza. We ordered the black truffle & mushroom and the seasonal special, which was Brussels sprouts & prosciutto I think. They are quite large and probably enough for two to share. The mushroom pizza was really oily. I preferred the Brussels sprouts one more, even though the leaves were a bit burnt. While the food was average, the service was great. Our waitress made sure our waters were refilled and checked up on us. As for the ambiance, the tv was quite loud. It was THE big game day though, so it can't be helped.

Wednesday night special - chicken fried steak over mashed potatoes with carrots. Yep. Those are cooked carrot sticks.

LaVenture felt like a typical hotel restaurant except for the restaurant bar - not the front, hotel bar, but the bar IN the restaurant. There was a wait for seats there but not the restaurant tables. According to a local source, it's the place to sit and chat with locals and tourists. On this night, we noticed that the couples who came together seemed to only talk to each other. Our server was super friendly, and I think she was excited to have a table during the slow, off-season. She is the reason we gave three stars instead of two because the food was disappointing. We sat at a corner table and were able to enjoy watching everyone including the pizza chef at the wood fired pizza oven. We should have had pizza, but, alas, no gluten free option for me. My hubby had the Wednesday night special of chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and carrots and pepper gravy. He's had lots of chicken fry, and this was pronounced, "okay." Maybe some salt?? I had a smash burger without a bun because. I get that smash burgers are done all the way through, but these were tough and the edges on one side were inedible. The frites were just okay. Oddly, the burger was over salted, and the fries not enough. The wine list was a pleasant surprise, and the pour was generous. Beer was cold with a nice head. We might try again and be sure to sit at the bar and order the wood fired pizza next time.

I broke my diet for this? Meh. Unimpressed. For starters, the waitstaff acted as if they could care less that I was there. Idk, maybe I wasn't bougie enough. LaVenture does appeal to a well travelled niche. Artwork abounds, the bar menu is eclectic and modern, the mixologists know their craft, and the brick oven sits impressively ready to cook pizza wonders. The bar was out of all their beers on tap. On a Friday night? Odd. As for my Italian sausage lasagna, it was lacking in height and flavor. I am accustomed to the traditional multilayered pasta that has slow cooked in the oven with plenty of meat sauce, ricotta and crispy mozzarella that's caramelized on the edges. This attempt was singular in nature, with a basic tomato sauce and loads of mozzarella to disguise the lacking pasta. On the other end of the spectrum, my fellow pilot greatly enjoyed his order of ribs with the side of house made slaw. Though why would a waiter ask at what temp to cook them? That was a first. If you find yourself at the gateway of the Big Bend, exhausted from the numerous art gallery tours, LaVenture is an option. Maybe the pizza is the way to go. I'm not sure the next time I'll be in the area to give it another try.

LaVenture is inside Hotel St. George in Marfa, Tx. Marfa has many great places for food but if you're looking for something a little more upscale then this is your place. We have had great service each time we've been, both for lunch and dinner. This restaurant was the first place I've ever had a Ranch Water and it is still the best one I've had in all of Texas. So do yourself a favor and stop in when you're in town.

My son and I came to Marfa for the weekend to see what all the fuss was about. This was one of the only restaurants open at the time. It was pretty good. Cute ambiance, it's inside a hotel. Our server wasn't the most knowledgeable but she was good. I ordered the veggie pizza and it was good, big enough to share. Too bad my son doesn't like veggies like me. Haha I ordered a glass of Prosecco and my son ordered wings and a coke. He liked his too. The carrots on the wings were old and soggy not fresh and crisp. Nothing spectacular but it was good.

During my first trip to Marfa I stopped in to the Hotel St George for a happy hour cocktail and loved how cute the space was and the ambience. I knew that the next time I returned to the quant desert town that not only would I need another cocktail but to sit down and enjoy a meal at LaVenture. And this is how during my recent visit to Marfa, I knew this was where I wanted dinner on Saturday night. My friend and I showed up for our 7:30 reservation to be told by the hostess that a table that had made a reservation for a seating prior to us ended up having more guests in their party so there was no table for us. Instead we were seated at the bar (which has a slight discount for dining there). The bartender who took care of us was very friendly and knowledgable. For dinner, I started with the Mesquite Old Fashioned, which was one of the tastiest and most unique old fashions I've ever enjoyed. We then went with the fried quail breast appetizer. I was a bit uncertain of how it would taste but I was blown away by how delicious it was. I'd been a bit hesitant of how all the flavors (polenta croutons, apple carrot slaw, honey sweet and sour) would work but everything complemented each other perfectly. For the main course I went with the 6 oz filet with a side of mashed potatoes and potato galette. I have to say - the combo of the mashed potatoes and potato galette together was one of the best things I've ever tasted. I would go back to LaVenture just for that...the same however couldn't be said for the steak. I ordered it rare, however, the bulk of the steak (except for the very middle) was more towards the medium well side and the outside tasted charred. If not for the overcooked steak and reservation mix-up I would give 5 stars to LaVenture. As it is, I see a return visit in my future.

Pizza oh my!! Foodies. Pizza. Mergherita pizza is the bomb.

It's been a while since I've been here foodies. Menu has changed. Was totally looking forward to the Charcuterie Board but it's no longer served. Took away a star. In fact, there's several items that aren't served anymore. The food is good but I miss what I loved. LaVenture has its own pizza oven and can serve up a delicious pizza, which I always love a great pizza. I had that. Husband had ravioli. We had wine. The ravioli was fabulous just wanted a little more on the plate. Service is good, they have a full bar and a great wine list is better.

We spent 3 meals and two happy hours here of our 3 day visit to Marfa. This is the only place that is open late during weekdays for dinner and drinks. Most happy hour drinks were $5 and they are excellent! The freshly made wood fired pizzas were awesome too!

Does this look good? You can bet yer A** it isn't. Yellow salad for $16.

It's for a very Texas upscale vibe tho, I liked the ambiance quite a bit! They had a lot of tables outside with heat lamps because it does get cool in the evenings, and they had regular tables and bar seating inside. We didn't have a reservation bc I wasn't sure what time we'd be arriving, but luckily they were able to seat us immediately at the bar since all the other tables were taken (wait for a table was almost an hour and a half). Our waitress (her name was Dallas) was super sweet and attentive and clearly knew the menu well. It's not a very long menu and the portion sizes were a little small for the price, hence 4/5 stars. But the flavors were excellent! My dad and I both got the risotto which had a little more to the portion, and my mom got the trout which was admittedly very small for like $35ish. But as I said, excellent flavor there! She also got a cocktail for like $16ish that they made off menu because she likes sweeter drinks and all the main menu drinks were pretty dry. I spent like $170 in total for all our food plus tax and tip I think? Objectively not terrible, but again for the price - it was a little high. Will also mention they had a single stall restroom, it was immaculate! And there was a good bit of street parking just around the corner from the place in front of a church, so even though there's no lot you can find a place to park.

However, the overall attitude and repeated glares from the waitress/bartender, Gary Jean, made the experience uncomfortable and unwelcoming. Good service goes a long way, and basic kindness shouldn't feel like too much to ask. It became clear that receiving decent service was going to be more effort than it should have been, so we decided to leave before our food even arrived. The staff were a bit overwhelmed but they stayed calm and friendly. We were a party of two and were seated immediately at an outdoor table next to the fountain. It's a very nice patio that was nicely lit by the hotel lights as it got darker. Our waitress was very friendly and greeted us when she came to our table. My wife ordered the pecan crusted salmon, which she said was very good. It was a large portion of nicely-cooked salmon. I ordered two items from the appetizer menu - bacon wrapped quail and kale beet salad. Both were very large portions, plenty for a meal or maybe even 2 people. There were about 6 pieces of quail and a moderately spicy aioli. It was very good. The kale beet salad was also delicious. We also had a piece of chocolate mousse cake, that was delicious. Nice and chocolatey but not overly sweet or rich. Even though the restaurant was crowded, our service was great. Our waitress was always friendly, checked on us often enough, and took the time to chat briefly without seeming harried. The food came out quickly and was hot and fresh. If you have never heard of the movie, that is a lot of their problem. The hotel and restaurant are resting on their laurels from a movie from the 1950s. If you took a date to see Giant when it first came out, you probably need food you can gum. We were here two years ago and had a good experience so we came back and were sorely disappointed. Service was appallingly slow because there was one waitress (who was great) for the entire restaurant and patio. There was one bartender. Very short-staffed. We had drinks and chips and salsa on the patio before moving inside for dinner. Entrees on the menu were chicken and veggie burgers (no beef?) and chicken was out. The other entrees were the pistachio-crusted steak (basically fancy chicken fried steak) and a ribeye. They were out of the pistachio-crusted steak. So, it was a veggie burger or a ribeye. No chicken dishes, no fish, no pasta. A frozen veggie burger or a $45 ribeye. We started with a a charcuterie board which was tasty but not very generous. The ribeyes were served on mashed potatoes and very good, but there was no vegetable, no bread - just steak and potatoes. I don't mind the price of the steak but part of that price is service and if there is one server for an entire restaurant and the patio, the service is not going to be that good, and it wasn't. Drinks were not refilled, dessert wasn't offered (they might have been out!), so it was eat and run. So, staffing issues, inventory management issues and a restaurant that had a number of customers to serve so they should do better. Much better.
