I am very disappointed in my first experience at this restaurant. My family and I went here to have a nice casual dinner while in Marfa. My wife and 2 daughters all ordered Hamburgers with meat only. When the waitress came out with loaded cheeseburgers we politely asked for them to correct the order. 10-15 minutes later the waitress comes back out with the same cold Hamburgers with the cheese & other toppings scraped off. We brought this to her attention by asking if the kitchen had simply sent out the same burgers with the top scraped off to which she replied "yes, probably." My wife then went to the hostess station to ask for a manager, and was given directions to the restroom. After finally locating the manager. We where given a very insincere apology and she walked away to the kitchen to make sure that was what happened,.. then offered to have another 3 hamburgers cooked in 7 minutes. But who wants food from a kitchen that obviously can't be trusted. My advice would be to save your money and eat elsewhere. *Edit- to the restaurant's credit they did cover my bowl of chili & French fries. read more

This appears to be the only restaurant of any significance in Marfa. It's stylish and inside the St George hotel lobby. Free parking is available to the left of the entrance in a unlit gravel lot. So, I might recommend you drop off your companions if anyone is wearing heals since the ground is quite uneven. While it's not worth driving all the way out here just to come to this place, it is truly quite nice. We didn't have reservations which turned out to be a problem since they were fully booked. So, if you plan to visit, please call ahead. However, we were able to sit in the bar area and order a few of the items off both the bar and restaurant menu. Our waitress didn't seem to mind too much but she had to ask permission to bring us anything from the restaurant menu. Our food was well prepared, including roasted Brussels sprouts, bruleed corn, steak, sauteed mushrooms, and much more. They were out of the blistered shishito peppers on the top of the menu which was a bit disappointing. However, being in Marfa in the middle of nowhere, we were happy to be able to get something honestly. As for the bar, it's not particularly well stocked. They didn't have any Kahlua for example so my order of a black Russian remained unfilled. If you decide to come to Marfa, this is the (only) place to be! read more

First time in Marfa, straightaway to dinner. Server was excellent. Nicely done aesthetic for the restaurant, just off of the lobby. Quiet, not too loud at all. Caesar salad was delish and the croutons were spot on. I'm a total pizza snob, but I did opt for the pizza. The dough was solid, if not a smidge too doughy and could benefit from being a bit thinner. The cheese was not bad. The sauce ruins the pizza. It has an odd taste from start to finish. Definitely not inline with a typical marinara sauce, but more of a fresh and raw tomato sauce. Pros: great (but pricey) cocktail selection, very friendly bartenders, clean quiet and quaint, shares a space with Marfa Books, half price on all menu items when you eat at the bar on Fri and Sat night, and a menu that was written very well and frankly I was very excited to try. Cons: if it hadn't been for the half priced menu this might have been a two star review. We ordered the crab cake appetizer, the prosciutto wrapped quail, the ahi tuna, with a side of sautéed wild mushrooms and Brussels sprouts. The Brussels sprouts were the best thing we ate. They were actually really good. Note, they come with cheese on top as not indicated on the menu. Everything else was sub par. The crab cake was underwhelming, just looked really blah on the plate. The quail tasted fine but that prosciutto was hard and leathery, there was nothing wild about my mushrooms, and the ahi tuna was served on the hottest plate ever and was super salty. We hadn't really tried a Mediterranean place before until here. The atmosphere is cozy and is also good for groups. The service was friendly and always nearby. We had the seared ahi tuna, wedge salad, beet salad, spinach salad, asparagus and whipped potatoes. The only downside for us is that they do not offer gluten free bread. read more

Checked in at the Hotel Saint George last night and immediately set to drinking at this lovely spot. Even given the Covid-19 craziness, this place was firing in all cylinders. After a couple of rounds outside, moved indoors to a large bar height table. We started with the carpaccio (lovely but over sauced for my taste) and main courses included spaghetti squash, wedge salad, 1/2 chicken and salmon. All of them were absolutely delicious, cooked with love, and nicely plated. The standouts were the chicken and the salmon. The chicken had this fried kale that was just an outstanding compliment to the chicken. The salmon was moist and nicely spiced. I haven't been to the restaurant but the name Laventure (actually spelled Lavanture) is the surname of my grandfather Louis Lavanture. Lavanture was an army surgeon and general practitioner who retired in 1935 and moved to Marfa where he established a practice. He moved into a building (? the hotel?) witfh his family (incl my mom Kathryn) and started a hospital that had 6 rooms. He died in 1946 from a long illness. LaVenture was a great place to stop on the way home from Big Bend National Park. After camping for three days it was nice to have a full meal. The chopped salad was really good, as was the chicken tortilla soup. The prices were quite high for the food received, but that seems to be the case in Marfa. My husband and I had a great dinner experience here. We got shishito peppers, beef carpaccio, and crab cakes for appetizers. The beef carpaccio was excellent, though there was a little too much aioli on it. The peppers and crab cakes were nice too. I got vegetable risotto. It was really good and well balanced. My husband got chicken and quinoa. His meal seemed a little dry in my opinion but he enjoyed it. Their spicy margarita was good, and my husband liked his manhattan. The food here is phenomenal! We ordered the ribeye, half chicken, peppers, French fries, and pasta. We also ordered the pomegranate martini which was delicious and refreshing!! The wait staff and (male) hosts are friendly and attentive! The hostess was the only one that was a bit rude/short. Overall, it's a very positive atmosphere and romantic! Friendly and accommodating service. Nice wine selections. We told them we had about 45 minutes to eat before we had to get on the road and they made recommendations based on this short timetable. Noise level was comfortable considering the packed bar just behind the short wall. Their bread with jalapeño honey butter, crispy shrimp, and beet salad were out of this world, really. Joules was a natural host...with great nail varnish and loads of charm! We were staying two nights at the Hotel George and wanted a simple but relaxed supper. We thought it strange that we could not reserve a table as the place operates on a first come first served basis, but a reception person took our details and said that they would pass them on. We turned up at the appointed hour to find the restaurant not that full and were quickly offered a booth. Then our server Joules appeared smiling and he was a delight! He was chatty, had his nails coloured au de nil (our favourite colour) and was made to be in the hospitality industry. He was quiet simply charming and had oodles of personality. The starter plate of charcuterie was not only generous in size but also delicious. We followed this up with a sausage pasta that got 10/10. A simple supper shared...and very well executed. A bottle of very passable Malbec was supped and we had a wonderful chat about our lives over the past 40 years...our birthdays are approaching and we were reflective. The atmosphere in the restaurant was busy, had a good level of music and some very good staff...but Joules was we feel at the top of the hospitality tree. The food is way overpriced for the taste. I ordered broccolini and it was doused in heavy olive oil and had no flavor. I had to add salt. I just stopped eating it because the oil was overwhelming. That was $12. I ordered the 3 ravioli and I don't know why I thought it was freshly made pasta, it wasn't. It was a frozen pasta that they heated up and again doused in oil. It had flavor but it was $26!! Frozen pasta that was thawed out for $26. I ate it all just because it was $26 not because I enjoyed it. What i did like was the bread with hummus, olive tapenade and a cream cheese. That was the best thing I ordered and worth the money. Well, this is a review during COVID so here if goes. I gave this place 2 stars solely on how nice and acccomodating the staff was especially given the pandemic. There was indoor seating with tables spread apart and we felt totally safe. But with that said the place was busy and the food and drinks came very slowly which is a problem when you have hungry kids. The initial dishes of pickles and brussels sprouts were tasty. However, the main courses and pizzas were not very good. We had the fish special which lacked flavor and was on top of San Marzanos that lacked any seasoning. The chicken was either over smoked or overcooked with a sauce that our group didn't like. And the pizzas, while creative just didn't taste very good. I hate leaving bad reviews but in a tourist spot I hope they help others. read more

We were blown-away with the outstanding food and wine offerings at LaVenture at the Hotel Saint George in the heart of Marfa. The dining room is both artsy, romantic and comfortable. Our pleasant evening started with their freshly-baked salt-crusted bread served with basalmic and olive oil. We could have made a dinner on the incredible bread alone! We both enjoyed the crispy chicken served with buttery mushroom risotto. The dish was truly scrumptious. We paired our dinner with the very modestly priced Sean Minor Chardonnay. To finish the meal we opted for the carrot cake and dark chocolate torte with dark cherries. Truly an amazing dinner meal from start to finish. Well meaning but not well executed. Service was excellent. Let me just get that out there first. Star for that. I was expecting a seafood restaurant, but it is Italian-California-ish. No stars off but it might add to the confusion in the kitchen. There is something wrong back there. Varied wine list - a star for that. Boring caesar salad. No stars off, but really you could get that salad at a cafeteria. Don't bother. Where things went really wrong was the raw chicken thigh and the slightly crunchy and lacking in flavor pappardelle pasta. I was hungry and ate all the meager toppings off that pasta dish and crunched through the pasta so we could get to the next event. Boyfriend ate the chicken wing and his side dish of mashed potatoes, but left the bloody thigh exposed for the kitchen to see. I know for a fact the server would have the kitchen fix these dishes but at that point the Hotel St George kitchen hit strike three and we were out the door. Love this place! The Caesar salad is delicious and the scallop appetizer made me want to lick the plate. Hubby had redfish and it was also wonderful. We love the servers and the manager is very very nice. On a previous visit he offered us free pastries that I would go back just to eat them. It had watermelon, pork belly, jicama, fresco queso, pepita nuts with a vinaigrette dressing. It was large so we shared it. The pork belly was perfectly cooked & tasty. This was a great salad. We ordered the Sausage Pepperdelle with house made ricotta. This was also an outstanding dish. They serve their house made focaccia bread. Service was as outstanding the food. We especially enjoyed the very friendly and special service we received from Anisa and Warren at Laventure, which is part of The Hotel St George. In Marfa, Texas. Anisa, our lovely waitress, went the extra mile to please us. The restaurant was quiet and lovely. My husband loved the mushroom ravioli. Warren, the bartender, spent a lot of time explaining the differences between Mezcal, Sotol and Tequila to my extremely interested husband. Warren prepared a tasting of 3 excellent mezcals, much to my husbands delight. Laventure is located in the lovely 5 star hotel that is only one year old. After dinner be sure to enjoy the poolside bar which is part of Hotel St George. It's a very popular bar and spacious area. read more
